Exactly ten years after the genre-mixing, canine-driven Hungarian thriller “White God” landed the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, this year’s ceremony culminated in the same prize going to a somewhat corresponding title: Chinese director Guan Hu’s “Black Dog,” a fusion of western, film noir and offbeat comedy with a highly lovable mutt at its center. The film, about a damaged loner returning to his desert hometown after a spell in prison and finding a kindred spirit in an equally world-weary greyhound, beat 17 other titles to take the top prize in the festival’s second-most prestigious competitive section. (The festival’s Official Competition awards will be handed out tomorrow night.)
Jury president Xavier Dolan, the actor-auteur behind such films as “Mommy” and “Laurence Anyways,” commended Guan’s film for “its breathtaking poetry, its imagination, its precision [and] its masterful direction.” He echoed the enthusiasm of Variety critic Jessica Kiang,...

AMC Networks is well-positioned to capitalize on the trend of traditional cable companies moving away from expensive sports- and news-inclusive packages toward “skinny” bundles that offer general entertainment and lifestyle programs, executives confirmed this month.
The company is also encouraged by some of its industry peers who have started bundling their offers with competitors, including a recently-announced Disney bundle that will bring together Disney Plus, Hulu and Warner Bros Discovery’s Max, the executives affirmed on a conference call with investors following AMC Networks’ quarterly earnings report.
AMC Networks was one of the first companies to embrace the idea of bundling its AMC Plus streaming service with a competitor, offering a package deal through Amazon’s Prime Video Channels marketplace where customers could select from a bundle that paired AMC Plus with Lionsgate’s Starz or Amazon’s own MGM Plus (formerly Epix). AMC Networks CEO Kristin Dolan grew up in the cable TV business. She was a senior executive at Cablevision when that company was at the peak of its power as a cable operator in the nation’s largest TV market.
Given her background, it’s no surprise that Dolan sees signs of hope for programmers in linear cable, a sector that has all been written off for dead by Wall Street and other media market watchers. Dolan, who just marked her one-year anniversary at the helm of the owner of AMC, SundanceTV, WeTV, IFC and BBC America, tells Variety podcast “Strictly Business” that she’s encouraged by the efforts by Comcast and Charter, the two largest operators, to address consumer needs by offering more low-cost channel packages on one hand and by embracing options such as the new Xumo stream box on the other.

Updated with closing price. Shares in AMC Networks dropped sharply Friday following a shaky fourth-quarter earnings report and a conference call with Wall Street analysts.
The stock initially drifted down by mid-single-digits in pre-market trading after the earnings release, which revealed a 23% drop in domestic ad revenue and a 16% decline in affiliate revenue. Although it was difficult to draw a direct line between management comments on the call and the stock movement later in the morning, the selloff intensified after the call. Shares fell 19% in the first hour of the trading day, to their lowest level since last October. They improved slightly in the afternoon but still finished down 15% at $14.41.
Execs were asked on the call to offer their guidance as to when the company’s top-line revenue might stabilize or even return to growth. “We’ve been very clear for the past year and going forward about how we...

AMC Networks — the company behind such cable channel brands as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such streaming services as AMC+, Acorn TV and Shudder — reported a 23 percent drop in fourth-quarter U.S. advertising revenue Friday, following an 18 percent decline in the third quarter, a second-quarter drop of 17 percent and a first-quarter decrease of 20 percent.
After returning to streaming subscriber growth in the third quarter after two quarters of declines, the company added 300,000 subs in the fourth quarter to end 2023 with a total of 11.4 million.
The latest quarterly U.S. ad revenue update came for the final quarter of 2023, in which AMC Networks aired such original series as The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Ad revenue dropped to $158 million for the period due to linear ratings declines and a challenging ad market, the company said.

The network of Hollywood executives and companies alleged to have known about and facilitated sex crimes by Harvey Weinstein is growing, with a lawsuit filed against James Dolan, the live events mogul behind Madison Square Garden Entertainment and AMC Networks.
A former massage therapist employed by Dolan accuses him of pressuring her into an unwanted sexual relationship a decade ago and orchestrating an encounter with Weinstein, who she also claimed sexually assaulted her. She alleges Dolan knew about Weinstein’s predatory behavior after the incident occurred in 2014, a year before he joined as a board member of the Weinstein Co.
E. Donya Perry, a lawyer for Dolan, denied the allegations and called the relationship a “friendship.”
“The references to Harvey Weinstein are simply meant to inflame and appear to be plagiarized from prior cases against Mr. Weinstein,” she said in a statement. “These claims reflect an act of retaliation by...

A former masseuse filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday, alleging that she was coerced into having sex with James Dolan and was also sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein.
The woman, Kellye Croft, alleges that Dolan pressured her to have sex after a massage appointment while she was working on an Eagles tour in 2013. She alleges that Dolan ignored her resistance and then summoned her to his room several more times on the tour, pressuring her to have sex.
The suit also alleges that Dolan arranged for her to meet with Weinstein, who, she alleges, sexually assaulted her at the Peninsula hotel in Beverly Hills in 2014. The suit accuses Dolan of sex trafficking.
According to the suit, Croft told Dolan shortly after the Peninsula incident that Weinstein had been “sexually aggressive.” Dolan responded that Weinstein was a “troubled person” who had “serious issues,” but that his friends were trying to get him to address them,...

Msg Network Executive Chairman James Dolan not only knew of a woman’s sexual assault allegations against pal Harvey Weinstein, but “did little to console” her, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court today against both the executive and the one-time mogul.
“[James] Dolan responded to Ms. Croft’s report of sexual assault in a completely matter-of-fact tone, noting that [Harvey] Weinstein was ‘a troubled person’ that had a lot of ‘serious issues,’ but that his friends were ‘trying to get him to address’ those issues,” says a sexual assault and sex-trafficking lawsuit filed by a former massage therapist against the Madison Square Garden owner and AMC Networks boss and Weinstein.
“Dolan intimated that Weinstein was not a ‘safe’ person but did little to console Ms. Croft or help her to report the assault to the authorities,” read the lawsuit Tuesday by the therapist, Kellye Croft, in federal court.

A woman who worked as a masseuse on an Eagles tour a decade ago filed a lawsuit Tuesday against James L. Dolan, the chairman and CEO behind Madison Square Garden, and convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein, among others, alleging sexual assault and trafficking.
The plaintiff, Kellye Croft, claims that in late 2013, Dolan enticed her into a sexual relationship and hired her for the tour on which Weinstein, whom she says was a close friend of Dolan’s, sexually assaulted her. She says when she told Dolan about the rape, she alleges he was unsympathetic.
