MOSCOW -- The Czech culture minister has warned of "media chaos" unless a new national TV council is up and running soon, in the wake of last week's dismissal of the regulatory body in a row over Central European Media Enterprises' $353 million arbitration settlement. Culture Minister Pavel Dostal called for the swift election of a minimum of nine candidates for the 13-member council so that there is no delay in making key broadcast and license decisions. "It's in the interest of both the public and state to have a functioning council, otherwise certain chaos could start in the media field," Dostal said. Dostal's comments came at Wednesday's extraordinary session of Parliament, convened to kick-start a new selection process.

PRAGUE, Czech Repulic -- Czech director Milos Forman and producer Saul Zaentz took center stage at a crowded gala screening this past weekend of their 1984 Oscar winner Amadeus in the 18th century splendor of Prague's Estates Theater. Both were in the Czech Republic, alongside actor Jeffrey Jones -- Emperor Joseph II in the film -- and writer Peter Shaffer to boost Warner Home Video's European DVD launch of the Amadeus Director's Cut and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Now an American citizen, Forman was visibly moved by the tribute paid to him by his home city on Saturday night, and which also saw DVD pioneer and Warner Home Video president Warren Lieberfarb honored by the Czech Film Institute for his contribution to the movie industry. Sean Connery -- who is shooting a film in Prague -- also attended the event along with Pavel Dostal, the Czech minister of culture.
