ABC is passing on its pilots.
The network has passed on Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
ABC Signature is, however, planning to shop The Hurt Unit to other networks and platforms, while 20th Television will be shopping Public Defenders and Judgement.
The move comes as it still has decisions to make on series Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, which was a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
Last month, ABC handed a series order to Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson. The project, which is based on the popular French detective series Hip, was the clear front-runner all development season.

Exclusive: Portia Doubleday (Mr. Robot), Christine Adams (Black Lightning) and Ken Kirby (Good Trouble) are set as series regulars opposite Sarah Shahi, Reid Scott and François Arnaud in Judgement, ABC’s drama pilot from former Charmed showrunner Joey Falco and 20th Television.
Written and executive produced by Falco, Judgement is a high-stakes legal soap that redefines the genre by playing out over two timelines. Fifteen years from now, a woman (Shahi) being vetted for a Supreme Court seat recounts her experience at a prominent D.C. law firm in 2023, where the only thing more controversial than the cases was her messy love life, caught between two feuding brothers. Now, with a Supreme Court seat on the line, all of her darkest secrets are at risk of coming out, threatening her nomination, her reputation and her marriage.

It's been over two years since "Mr. Robot" ended and left behind a complicated yet ultimately positive legacy. Although ratings declined in season 2, which was heavily criticized for being overly-convoluted and slow, the show's fast-paced, climactic third season not only won back the acclaim of critics and fans, but retroactively improved everything that came before. All that set-up and character work in season 2 was worth it after all; we just needed to be patient.
Season 4 followed through with season 3's momentum, opening up with the sudden, shocking death of Angela Moss (Portia Doubleday). The show continued with one major, game-changing development after another,...

The latest venture from genre specialists Blumhouse Productions is this horror adaptation of the popular 1977 TV series that starred Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize. However, while that sounds like a good idea in theory, it leaves a little to be desired in practice.
The set-up is almost identical to the TV show. In October 2019, Portia Doubleday shocked Mr. Robot fans when she stated that it was her decision to leave the show earlier than expected. Even series creator Sam Esmail acknowledged that the early exit of Doubleday’s fan-favorite character, Angela Moss, was not the writers’ original plan. While the actor alludes to there being multiple reasons why she decided to retire her signature role well ahead of schedule, she still maintains that it fits the creative spirit of Mr. Robot.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” is speeding to a $65 million opening at the North American box office this President’s Day weekend, according to estimates.
Paramount’s action-adventure, based on the Sega video game character, had been pegged to generate $40-45 million prior to its launch. Should estimates hold, it could break the $54 million record set last year by “Detective Pikachu” for the best three-day domestic opening for a video-game movie
Opening at 4,130 location, the film received an A CinemaScore from first-day audiences. The live-action and CGI hybrid follows the world’s fastest hedgehog teaming up with his new best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) to defend the planet from the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Reviews have been mostly positive, generating a 64 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” is racing to a dominant $55 million opening at 3,150 North American locations during the four-day President’s Day weekend in a launch that’s above forecasts, early estimates showed Friday.
Universal’s romantic drama “The Photograph” and Sony-Blumhouse’s “Fantasy Island” are both performing in line with forecasts in the $12 million to $14 million for their launches. Searchlight’s debut of “Downhill,” starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus is ahead of expectations at about $7 million.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” started with $3 million at Thursday night previews, matching that of “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” which opened last year with $55 million. Preview audiences gave “Sonic the Hedgehog” a 4 out 5 PostTrak rating.

If crimes against cinema merited prosecution, Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island would go directly to death row. It defies common sense why Blumhouse, the company that boasts Get Out, The Purge, and Paranormal Activity on its horror roster, would put its stamp on this pathetic imitation of scare cinema. The idea was to jam horror jolts into the old Fantasy Island TV series, which dabbled in the supernatural when it wasn’t ripping off The Love Boat by stranding D-list guest stars in clichéd stories. ABC’s Fantasy franchise, which ran from 1977 to 1984 (B.

Now in theaters to kick off Valentine's Day weekend is Blumhouse's feature film remake Fantasy Island (2020), a modernized take on the popular television series that ran for seven seasons throughout the late ’70s and early ’80s, in which people were offered the opportunity to live out their deepest, and sometimes darkest, desires.
At the helm of the new Fantasy Island is Jeff Wadlow, who previously collaborated with Blumhouse on 2018’s Truth or Dare, and the story follows an enigmatic host by the name of Mr. Roarke (played by Michael Peña), who welcomes guests to the mysterious island so they can fulfill their desires, but each request comes with a hefty price attached to it. Fantasy Island (2020) also stars Lucy Hale, Austin Stowell, Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday, Ryan Hansen, Jimmy O. Yang, and Michael Rooker.

Jeff Wadlow’s Fantasy Island ain’t worth one ticket to paradise, let alone two. Blumhouse’s reworked ABC drama isn’t the ferocious sanctuary survival flick that trailers or posters promote, nor do its mystical elements beckon nostalgic enjoyment. To be fair, no one in Blumhouse’s intended demographic will understand “Tattoo” Easter Eggs or remember the 80s televised Fantasy Island, but even as a standalone, Fantasy Island: Blumhouse Edition is sloppy brand-name abuse. Never haunting, rarely thrilling, and needlessly overcomplicated as an almost two-hour film that lasts one inescapable eternity.

Just how dire is Hollywood’s dependence on intellectual property? The “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie wasn’t even this week’s most desperate attempt to bring an old brand into multiplexes. Not that rebooting ABC’s “Fantasy Island” for the big screen was an inherently bad idea — the 1977 television show’s “‘Twilight Zone’ in paradise” vibe is always sunny and evergreen — but , and this slapdash programmer is such a complete shrug of a movie that it feels almost defiantly apathetic from the moment it starts. Dumb in ways that range from inane to insulting, but always growing duller by the minute, this new “Fantasy Island” is only a few minutes old before your greatest wish is to be watching literally anything else.
So there’s an island. And fantasies come true there. But — and here’s the catch! — people need to be careful what they wish for. Aladdin learned that lesson,...

On TV’s “Fantasy Island” (1977-1984; 1998-1999), guests flew in for what they imagined would be fun and fulfillment but were subjected to what turned out to be hard-won life lessons. Audiences turning up for the new feature film version in the hopes of either fun or fulfillment will similarly go home empty-handed.
If this new movie — referred to in some circles as “Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island” — were a pilot for a TV reboot, it would come off as overwrought and underwritten but still possibly on the right track for a revived anthology series. As a movie, those flaws are magnified to the size of the silver screen, and its contrivances and coincidences come off as even less convincing.
Michael Peña slips into Ricardo Montalban’s white suit (and his silky overpronunciation of “Fahn-tah-see”) as the enigmatic Mr. Roarke, the host of the titular resort where people go to make their deepest wishes come true.

Somewhere, someone has been desperately hoping that Hollywood would get around to making a movie adaptation of the late-’70s TV show “Fantasy Island.” Meanwhile, it would seem that the rest of us — that is, the filmgoing public — are just extras in an elaborate cautionary tale designed to teach that person a lesson. The point being: Be careful what you wish for; such corny old TV series are better suited for reruns than for reboots. As suave yet sinister host Mr. Roarke warns the half-dozen expendable douchebags — er, guests — who’ve traveled to this enchanted retreat to live out their wildest dreams, “Fantasies rarely play out as you would expect.”

Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions has ruled the box office when it comes to the horror genre in recent years, so when “The Hunt” cancelled its planned September 2019 release, it was a major shock.
The film — a satiric thriller that follows a group of liberal elites who try to track down and kill “red state” conservatives for sport — sparked controversy and was shelved in August following the Dayton and El Paso mass shootings. It also drew the ire of President Donald Trump, who (though he did not name the film) insinuated via Twitter that “the movie coming out is made in order to inflame and cause chaos.”
At Tuesday’s Los Angeles premiere of Blumhouse’s latest thriller, “Fantasy Island,” Blum reflected on the news announced earlier in the day that “The Hunt” will be hitting theaters after all this March.
“I always check the reactions online,” the producer told Variety.

Arriving in theaters this weekend is Blumhouse's feature film remake Fantasy Island (2020), a modernized take on the popular television series that ran for seven seasons throughout the late ’70s and early ’80s, in which people were offered the opportunity to live out their deepest, and sometimes darkest, desires.
Fantasy Island (2020) also stars Lucy Hale (who also co-starred in Truth or Dare), Austin Stowell, Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday, Ryan Hansen, Jimmy O. Yang, and Michael Rooker. At the recent press day for the film, Daily Dead spoke to Wadlow...

Actor Michael Pena says he took inspiration from late Mexican actor Ricardo Montalbans for his upcoming movie "Fantasy Island".
"Fantasy Island" is a horror reimagination of the hit 1970's American fantasy television series of the same name. Montalban is famous for his portrayal of Mr. Roarke in the series.

"That performance is so cemented in my imagination, in my recollection, my memories," Pena said.
"I did it just a little bit like he did - it's not an imitation, it's a personalisation of things that he did. Number one was the accent, with Montalban being Mexican. I had just finished doing 'Narcos', where I spent eight months in Mexico City; it's a very distinct accent that they have - a Spanish accent when they speak English - that I found fascinating," he added.

"The island is twisting our fantasies!" Sony has unveiled the second trailer for the freaky new Fantasy Island movie, based on the classic 70s TV show of the same name. This update is actually a horror movie produced by Jason Blum's iconic Blumhouse. Michael Peña stars Mr. Roarke, who invites guests to his exclusive island resort to fulfill their fantasies - they can only choose one. But they may never come home from this vacation when their fantasies start to turn into nightmares. The main cast includes Lucy Hale, Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy O. Yang, Ryan Hansen, Kim Coates, and Michael Rooker. The first trailer was pretty solid, this one is just a bit better, but I'm still not sure if this going to be any good in the end. It still seems a bit too campy and obvious, but perhaps there's some good twists. Check this out.

The mysterious Mr. Roarke turns peoples’ greatest dreams against them in the new trailer for the film reboot of the Seventies TV show Fantasy Island.
While the original show often had some somber and chilling twists, the new film is a straight-up horror flick, with Michael Peña playing a nefarious version of Mr. Roarke. The new trailer primarily centers around Lucy Hale’s character, Melanie, whom Mr. Roarke offers the opportunity to get some vengeance and closure on a childhood bully.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” is racing toward an opening in the $40 million range over Presidents’ Day weekend, early tracking showed on Thursday.
Paramount Pictures decided in May to push “Sonic the Hedgehog” back three months, from Nov. 8 to Valentine’s Day, following fan criticism over the appearance and design of the titular blue character — particularly his teeth and lean legs.
Ben Schwartz voices Sonic the Hedgehog and Jim Carrey plays Sonic’s nemesis Doctor Robotnik, alongside James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Neal McDonough and Adam Pally. Directed by Jeff Fowler, the film follows Sonic as he attempts to escape the government.
The movie, based on the hit Sega video game franchise, had been in the works at Sony, but Paramount picked up the project in 2018 when the studio let its film rights lapse. Sega launched the game in 1991 and has sold more than 360 million copies.

I'm sorry, but if you are chosen to go to a swanky resort that promises to allow you to live out your every fantasy, how do you not suspect something suspicious is afoot? Long gone are the days where Mr. Roarke (Ricardo Montalban) would cordially greet visitors to his luxurious island where guests could have every desired fulfilled, with the added caveat that their characters would be tested along the way for enrichment, with new characters arriving at the island for betterment on a weekly syndication. As can be seen in this startling trailer, Blumhouse, Sony Pictures, and director Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare) has twisted the nostalgic property into a horror fable just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Michael Pena steps into Montalban’s shoes as this film’s iteration of Mr. Roarke, the charismatic owner of Fantasy Island, where every desire is fulfilled–but not everything is as picturesque and idyllic as it seems. The actualization of their fantasies become literal nightmares and the guests only means of escaping with their lives is to solve the mystery of Fantasy Island.

In the new trailer for Fantasy Island, Mr. Roarke played by Michael Peña, is no Ricardo Montalban. This Mr. Roarke may not be ushering in more nightmare island than fantasy, as a cautionary tale of 'be careful what you wish for' type scenario. Maggie Q, Lucy Hale, Michael Rooker and Portia Doubleday also star. Watch the trailer below.

Your wildest dreams are about to come true, but with a twist. “Fantasy Island” is a horror film where your deepest fantasies become a horrifying reality.
If that premise sounds familiar that’s because it’s inspired by the classic ’70s and ’80s adventure and comedy show “Fantasy Island,” which was created by Gene Levitt. Blumhouse and Sony Pictures are teaming up for the film that casts Michael Peña in the Ricardo Montalban role as Mr. Roarke.
In the original show, which also starred Hervé Villechaize alongside a cavalcade of rotating guest stars, visitors to Fantasy Island via “ze plane” would find their greatest fantasy realized, but things rarely played out as expected. The twist for Blumhouse’s “Fantasy Island” is that those same fantasies get morphed in gruesome ways.

It can be easy to forget quite how big a deal, in its early going, “Mr. Robot” was.
It eventually became, fairly enough, a hallmark for narrative and directorial excess. But the series, about Elliot, a hacker attempting to remake America, had the real-life effect of remaking the USA Network, shifting the cabler conclusively away from its previous model of sunny workplace dramedy. Its broader implications included the launches of executive producer Sam Esmail, with Amazon’s “Homecoming” and USA’s forthcoming “Briarpatch” to his credit, and star Rami Malek. And its conceit, that the world is governed by entities interested in seeding chaos for their own benefit, has seemed more urgent since the show’s 2015 premiere. The near-perfect first season had the right talent and the right timing.
But subsequent seasons’ refusal to consider the world outside Elliot’s head diminished its viewership and reputation. So it is that Season 4, the show’s last,...
