San Sebastian New Directors Buzz Title ‘Woman at Sea,’ Broken Down by Director-Star Dinara Drukarova
Playing in the prestigious New Directors’ section at San Sebastián, “Woman at Sea” (“Grand Marin”), a beautifully shot adaptation of the best-selling book of the same name, marks the feature directing debut of Russian actor Dinara Drukarova, who also stars in the film.
Sold by Loco Films, “Woman at Sea” is produced by Marianne Slot and Carine LeBlanc at Paris-based Slot Machine (“Melancholia”). Lensed in Iceland, the film captures the struggle for integration, and the search for self, all set in the film’s stunning but cold seascapes.
Drukarova’s character Lili follows in the footsteps of the book’s author, Catherine Poulain, who spent 10 years working on fishing boats in Alaska, as documented in the book.
“Woman at Sea” is about a woman working on a boat. I understand you live on a boat. Is there a connection?

Packing its first full-on onsite edition since the pandemic, Spain’s San Sebastian Festival has never been busier or bigger. 10 Takes on what is shaping up as a vibrant edition:
Playing Off Powerful Market Forces
Nine of Netflix’s 20 Top 10 non-English-language films and TV series are sourced from Spain or Latin America. Platforms are battling to tie down talent.
This year, eight movies from Spain and Latin America play in competition alone at San Sebastian, the most important film event in the Spanish-speaking world. The fest’s main sidebar is its New Directors strand. San Sebastian’s focus on the Spanish-speaking world and new talent now aligns with powerful market forces. That fact plays out over the 2022 edition.

Loco Films has boarded international sales rights to actor-turned-helmer Dinara Drukarova’s feature debut “Woman at Sea” which will world premiere in the New Directors section at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
Produced by Marianne Slot and Carine LeBlanc at Paris-based Slot Machine (“Melancholia”), “Woman at Sea” stars Drukarova as Lili, who has left everything behind to travel to the end of the earth to fulfil her dream of fishing in the northern seas, in Iceland. She convinces Ian, a fishing boat skipper, to give her a chance and embarks on the Rebel. She is the only woman in the crew but she will win everybody’s respect thanks to her determination and courage.
“We are proud of this first film, shot on the harsh northern seas about a young woman seeking the fresh air of freedom. A beautiful and free film and the birth of a new director,” said Laurent Danielou,...

Last week we got the first set of titles that will (for the most part) premiere at the 2022 San Sebastián International Film Festival. Earlier today, the Donostia folks lassoed thirteen films for their New Directors section. They include projects that we’ve been keeping an eye out on for a good stretch including Laura Baumeister‘s Daughter of Rage – a social issue drama that has taken its sweet time in post (there might be some Efx elements). We also find Dinara Drukarova‘s Le Grand Marin – which was co-wrote with Raphaëlle Desplechin and sees Drukarova, Dylan Robert, Antonythasan Jesuthasan and Sam Louwyck in the book to film project set in Iceland.…...

Three buzzy titles, all turning on women carving out their own destinies – Carmen Jaquier’s “Thunder,” Laura Baumeister’s “Daughter of Rage” and Dinara Drukarova’s “Grand Marin” – feature in the 13-title lineup of San Sebastian’s 2022 New Directors section.
Also making the New Directors’ cut – now firmly consolidated as the most important sidebar at the highest-profile film festival in the Spanish-speaking world – is “Tobacco Barns,” the awaited and second feature from Spain’s Rocío Mesa, as well as Jeong Ji-hye’s Jeonju Festival winner “Jeong-sun” which has its director hailed as a talent to track.
Eight of the 13 features are directed by women who also serve as protagonists in most of the section’s films. Two wildly mismatched travellers find themselves sharing a sleeping compartment from Moscow to Murmansk in Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen’s beguiling romance
Back in the early 1990s, while covering the filming of the bizarre Russian-backed, Ukraine-set horror movie Dark Waters, I spent 17 hours on a midnight train from Moscow to Odesa. To this day I can still vividly recall the noise, smell and claustrophobia of that journey, crammed into a damp, four-bunk berth with tiny corridors whose windows were sealed shut, leading to toilets that were best avoided. All those memories came rushing back as I watched Compartment No 6, a 1990s-set drama in which a young woman boards a Moscow train heading the other way – up towards the port city of Murmansk. The film’s trajectory may be north rather than south, and the timescale far longer than my trip, but the expression on Finnish actor Seidi Haarla’s...

Two strangers on a train, a young Finnish woman (Seidi Haarla) and a rough Russian miner (Yuriy Borisov), share a compartment on a two-day trip north from Moscow to the Arctic coast, in the surprising Compartment No. 6. The trip is more than a physical journey, and this strangers on a train Finnish drama has won multiple well-deserved accolades since its release and is a leading contender for the Best International Film Oscar.

We’ve all taken one of those journeys on public transport where you end up sharing a space with someone you’d rather not, so it’s easy to sympathise with Finnish student Laura (Seidi Haarla) when she finds herself in a sleeper car bound from Moscow Murmansk in the far north of Russia with lairy Russian miner Lhoja (Yuriy Borisov). The train is packed, the guard is not about to be bribed into giving her a better berth and Laura is also feeling emotionally fragile after her older professor girlfriend (Dinara Drukarova) cried off from the trip at the last minute. Lhoja, meanwhile, seems to be occupying the space of at least three, spreading out his booze and food, while obnoxiously quizzing her about her plans.
Explaining that she’s heading to Murmansk to see its famous rock-carved petroglyphs rather than to pick up sex work, her suggestion that “It’s easier to understand.

For anyone who’s ever got drunk on bad schnapps with a stranger, for anyone who’s ever been properly alone in a nowhere-town and spoken to a dial tone just to look like they had something to do, for anyone who’s ever been asked how to say “I love you” in their language and has patiently sounded out the words for “Fuck you” … Juho Kuosmanen’s deeply delightful Cannes competition title “Compartment No. 6” plays less like a film than an incredibly detailed, richly textured memory. And for all the people who’ve never done any of those things, now you have.

How André Dussollier becomes a smiling Ernst Lubitsch devil out of Heaven Can Wait, location scouting in Roubaix, green Alfred Hitchcock scissors, New York Film Festival director Kent Jones's Hitchcock/Truffaut, Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, and Roman Polanski's Tess d'Urbervilles became part of my animated conversation with Arnaud.

We spoke about François Truffaut's Mississippi Mermaid (La Sirène Du Mississipi), Esther’s siren song and Paul’s knightly mourning, how Stanley Cavell and John Ford make for a good epilogue, and why Arnaud no longer writes small talk but does dance choreography.

He might not be as recognized as someone like Aki Kaurismaki, but Norwegian filmmaker Bent Hamer has carved out his own similarly distinctive niche, thanks to offbeat comedies like "Kitchen Stories" and "O'Horten." Now he's back with "1001 Grams," which will make its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the first trailer dropped today. Starring Ane Dahl Torp, Laurent Stocker, Stein Winge, Hildegun Riise, Per Christian Ellefsen, Peter Hudson, Dinara Droukarova, Christian Erickson, Didier Flamand and Magne Håvard Brekke, the movie's milieu is set in an absurdly specific area of science. Here's the official synopsis: "When Norwegian scientist Marie attends a seminar in Paris on the actual weight of a kilo, it is her own measurement of disappointment, grief and love that ends up on the scale." There's no U.S. distributor for this one yet. Watch the trailer below.

A multi-character holiday film, Home For Christmas was the last we saw from Norwegian director Bent Hamer. His latest, which he has also written, sounds like a return to his sharply observed character studies a la 2007′s O’Horton.
Gist: When Norwegian scientist Marie attends a seminar in Paris on the actual weight of a kilo, it is her own measurement of disappointment, grief and, not least, love, that ends up on the scale.
Release Date: Affixed with a December 24th release in France, Hamer’s 2007 film, O’Horton, played in Un Certain Regard, and we’re thinking his latest has a possibility of playing there again.

The BFi London Film Festival got off to a cracking start last night with the gala screening of Fernando Meirelles' 360, the globe-spanning ensemble piece starring Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, Anthony Hopkins, Jamel Debbouze, Ben Foster, Moritz Bleibtreu and more.
Law led the assembled stars alongside much of the film's European cast, including Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Lucia Siposova, Gabriela Marcinkova and Dinara Drukarova. Also in attendance that we spotted were Tom Hiddleston, Terry Gilliam and Bonnie Wright and much of Blighty's film industry movers and shakers.
The London Film Festival continues until October 26; look out for 360 at cinemas all over early next year, we're guessing.
In other Lff news, a couple of extra events have just been added to the schedule: there's a Seth Rogen & Will Reiser interview happening for 50/50, and a Woody Harrelson talk in connection with his new effort, Rampage. Get after it!

360
Directed by Fernando Mierelles
Written by Peter Morgan
It’s not difficult to see why the organisers of the 55th London Film Festival selected the new film by Fernando Mierelles, the spherically titled 360, as the opening night gala film. As well as being written by British scribe Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon, Hereafter) and starring three of the UK’s most successful acting exports in the forms of Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Rachel Weisz the film also presents a global tale than spans four continents, in a fashion that echoes the festivals international remit, considering its strands devoted to World Cinema, Cinema Europa, French Revolutions, New British Cinema, and many other experimental and historical programming frontiers. It also doesn’t hurt in having a few fantastically beautiful people to power the necessary red carpet star wattage for the all important gala publicity and punditry, it’s such a...

The official Cannes lineup is announced tomorrow. [Update: Here it is!] I bring this up a day early because occasionally while attempting to organize my hard drive (so many folders, so much disarray) I find rather inexplicable photos... Behold!
The Best/Weirdest Cannes Photo Buried On Nathaniel's Hard Drive
Quentin Tarantino affectionately attacks Kathleen Turner while Tilda Swinton, amused, seems to be conversing telepathically with the camera man.
I'd kill for a transcript of all Cannes jury deliberations, ever. So many crazy fabulous people, and such random groupings of the same each and every year. Oh, to be there in the heart of it all each May. This year's jury king is Tim Burton. Juliette Binoche is the light-painting official poster girl.
Important Names for this Year's Fest
Tim Burton, Jury President (Competition)

The lineup for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival set to run from May 12 - 23 was announced this morning in Paris, France at the Grand Hotel. On top of the information you'll read below, Twitter user OnTheCroisette added additional information as did ioncinema who specifically reports Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life is 'not ready'" and will not be included in the festival as was previously expected. OnTheCroisette said the Cannes selection committee saw a "copy" of the film, and "anything could happen in the coming weeks," but I'm not holding my breath.
Word from the press conference is that we can expect four to six additional films announced over the coming days/weeks. What will they be? Olivier Assayas's Carlos? Julian Schnabel's Miral? Francois Ozon's Potiche? Bruce Robinson's Rum Diary? Take a look at the list and my brief commentary below and let us know what you think.

The Competition will feature 16 films from 13 countries. 46 features had been chosen for the full selection as of Thursday's conference, with "six or seven more" to come in the coming days, Fremaux told journalists at the conference held at the luxe Parisian Grand Hotel.
