At last, young kids have had a reason to go to the movies. (July's G-Force was the most recent opportunity and some parents are still reeling from the experience.) Sony Pictures' PG-rated Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs will open this weekend in 2-D, 3-D and IMAX and is destined to lock into the number one spot over three other new films: Love Happens, The Informant!, and Jennifer's Body. How will those movies open? Now that's where it gets interesting. Megan Fox -- the controversial 'It' girl of summer - is exploiting her assets in the Karyn Kusama-directed, Diablo Cody-scripted horror film Jennifer's Body while Aaron Eckhart chases Jennifer Aniston's body in the romantic drama Love Happens. And Matt Damon dons a mustache and glasses for his Ocean's director Steven Soderbergh in the R-rated comedy The Informant! Overall, the weekend should handily beat out last year, when...

Before diving in with the coming week's releases, let's take a quick look at last week's. I think the poll results usually paint a pretty telling picture of who is reading this blog. The weekend's big box office winner, Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," failed to pick up a single vote in the poll. "Sorority Row" took top spot in the poll (70% of your votes), followed in a distant second by "Whiteout" and "9," which were basically tied, at 15% and 13% respectively.
My takeaway is that you readers are on the younger side -- ie below 30, or at least not yet parents -- and that you prefer spectacle to schmaltz. That's definitely an overly broad generalization, but I do find the fact the weekend's biggest earner, by quite a wide margin I might add, didn't even pick up one vote in last week's poll. Now, let's take...

The good news for the media attending today's packed Tiff screening of Jane Campion's Oscar-hopeful Bright Star? The first 100 minutes were terrific! The bad news: The final 19 were upside down. A plattering snafu flipped the films final reel into a fuzzy, hazy, hallucinogenic blur featuring ailing poet John Keats and his lover Fanny Brawne sharing their last moments -- backwards. If you thought Keats's language was beautiful in English, there's an even more singular pleasure in hearing it run in the clipped dialect perhaps best known as Lynchian. Tough break; it happens to even the best of festivals, but more than 300 people filed out without knowing how the couple's tragic romance ends. Or at least the part up until Keats dies at the tender age of 25. Spoiler alert?...
