Toby Keith, whose history with the CMT Music Awards goes back to having co-hosted the earliest incarnation of the show, will get his due in the wake of his recent death, as an all-star salute is planned for Keith on Sunday night’s three-hour CBS telecast.
The tribute will feature performances by one of the hottest figures in country music, Lainey Wilson, along with his fellow industry veterans Brooks & Dunn, whose Ronnie Dunn is a fellow Okie. Rocker Sammy Hagar, who featured Keith on an episode of his TV series “Rock & Roll Road Trip” in 2022, will join the lineup paying homage.
Set for what’s being billed as special appearances saluting the late singer are Lukas Nelson and Roger Clemens. Nelson’s father, Willie, had a smash duet with Keith, “Beer for My Horses.” Baseball legend Roger Clemens’ friendship with Keith included the singer inducting the ballplayer into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame.

“Bad ass bitch” are the first words used to describe June Carter Cash in the official trailer for June, the documentary premiering via Paramount+ on Jan. 16. Kacey Musgraves assigns the label to her — and the remainder of the trailer ticks off all of the reasons why it’s a more than accurate descriptor.
In addition to Musgraves, the film features appearances and insight from Reese Witherspoon, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Larry Gatlin, Robert Duvall, Ronnie Dunn, and more. Having walked in the light of Carter Cash’s legacy and influence,...

This year’s Stagecoach Festival was a love letter to country music’s past and a nod to its wide-open future. While the festival — the genre’s largest, most rollicking reunion that takes place in California’s low desert the week after Coachella — was sparse on guest appearances (no Axl Rose, this time), the level of showmanship and raw talent was high.

The fifth annual “Heal The Music Day” will be October 21, 2022 and music makers across all genres are invited to join Chris & Morgan Stapleton, Lauren Daigle, Keith Urban, Rodney Crowell, Ronnie Dunn, Tina Parol, Vince Gill, Wiatr & Associates, and many more to raise awareness and funding to support Music Health Alliance (Mha).
In just nine years, Mha has provided free healthcare advocacy and access to life-saving health and financial resources to more than 18,000 working music professionals nationwide and is entirely funded through individual and corporate donations and grants.
Launched in 2017, Heal The Music Day is the brainchild of Grammy-winning musician Rodney Crowell who is championing this year’s campaign with Mha in an effort to raise awareness and support for the emergency and ongoing medical needs of our country’s creative community, 76 of whom are self- employed or part of a small business, many with limited and unpredictable resources, and often uninsured or under-insured for healthcare.

Rodney Crowell could have spent a lifetime writing an album about Texas. In a way, he has. Though the Grammy-winning Americana storyteller left the Lone Star State for Music City in 1972, he’s returned to it time and again for inspiration in the decades since, from his 2001 LP The Houston Kid to his 2011 memoir Chinaberry Sidewalks. But Crowell owes his latest album, Texas, to a song called “Brown & Root, Brown & Root,” and a conversation it started between him and Steve Earle.
“I wrote that back in the Seventies and Steve learned it.

His partner of nearly 30 years Kix Brooks laid down some rootsy harmonica, while Midland’s Jess Carson and Cameron Daddy chimed in on background vocals.

On her Grammy-winning album Golden Hour, Kacey Musgraves combined traditional acoustic instruments and a synthetic vocoder effect in “Oh, What a World,” creating a standout track that inspired the name of her 2019 headlining tour. At the third of four sold-out Oh, What a World: Tour dates at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Friday, Musgraves emphasized that mellow magic of Golden Hour and reasserted her country connections with an appearance by Brooks & Dunn.

In the just-released “No U in Oklahoma,” Reba McEntire spells out the twists and turns of a troubled relationship set to an irresistible Western swing beat, replete with twin fiddles, steel guitar and piano accompaniment straight out of a Sooner State dance hall.
“You put the ‘T’ for tears in Texas, ‘S’ for sad in St. Louie/Our reckless travels led us to the state of Missouri,” McEntire sings, with the latter state name sounding more like “misery.”

Since reuniting in 2014 for their Las Vegas residency with Reba McEntire, Brooks & Dunn have regularly performed together onstage, but the award-winning country duo haven’t been in the studio as a unit since 2007. They break that streak, however, with the new album Reboot.
Due April 5th, Reboot pairs Ronnie Dunn and Kix Brooks with 12 contemporary country artists to reinterpret the duo’s hits. Kacey Musgraves, Midland, Ashley McBryde, Brothers Osborne, Thomas Rhett, Brett Young, Lanco, Cody Johnson, Jon Pardi, Tyler Booth, Luke Combs and Kane Brown each tackle a B&D classic.

Reba McEntire represented country music in this year’s Kennedy Center Honors class. The Oklahoma native was in attendance as Kelly Clarkson, Lady Antebellum and Brooks & Dunn performed her songs at the December 2nd Washington, D.C., ceremony, which aired on CBS on Wednesday night.
Clarkson, resplendent in a red dress (a subtle nod to McEntire’s infamous 1993 CMAs dress), delivered a majestic take of “Fancy,” the Bobbie Gentry tale of a young girl persuaded by her mother to “be nice to the gentlemen.” A staple of McEntire’s own live show,...

Washington, D.C. — It was a celebration of a broad spectrum of American music — from country and jazz to musical theater and modern minimalism — at the 41 annual Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday.
That’s when the nation’s capital paused from its political concerns to toast eight showbiz titans for excellence: Superstar multi-hyphenates Cher and Reba McEntire, along with composer/pianist Philip Glass, and jazz saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter. Tapped for a special honor was the creative quartet behind the musical “Hamilton” – writer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, director Thomas Kail, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler and music director Alex Lacamoire.
President Donald Trump declined to attend the event for the second straight year or host the traditional pre-gala reception for honorees at the White House. The decision, while breaking with longstanding tradition, was announced earlier and was met without visible dissent since Trump’s presence would have overshadowed the event, if not impacted it directly.

Kix Brooks had a revelation while executive producing and starring in his new movie, You’re Gonna Miss Me — and he couldn’t be happier about it.
While working with his son Eric, who co-wrote the drama about learning the meaning of family, Brooks, 62, says he realized, “my son Eric is quite a little screenwriter.”
“He studied film and English at Vanderbilt and I was wondering about all those crazy courses he was taking, what I was paying all that money for,” says Brooks. “So we started working together and I realized he kind of knew he was doing. It’s a great feeling!

Attention, Hollywood: Kelly Clarkson has had a lifelong love affair with White Christmas – “my favorite Christmas movie!” – and she’s available for a remake.
“You know how they’re doing musicals on TV now?” she said. “I really want to do that with that movie.”
The singer nominated herself (for the Rosemary Clooney part, no doubt) during her holiday musical extravaganza in Nashville on Friday night. And by all means take her seriously, because she’s earned the right to call herself a queen of Christmas music, especially in her adopted hometown.
