The 1993 “Frasier” pilot and the first episode of the 2023 Paramount+ revival have a lot in common. With the respective titles “The Good Son” and “The Good Father,” both episodes follow Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane as he moves to a new city, makes a massive career change, and moves in with a family member with whom he has a chilly relationship. Television legend James Burrows even returned to direct the first episode of the reboot, providing another link to the show’s storied past.

From “Cheers” to “Frasier,” Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane was a mainstay of comedy TV for 20 years, from the ’80s to the early-aughts. Now, after an equal amount of time off the air, Grammer is back in the role for Paramount+’s “Frasier.”
The streaming series is a revival-meets-reboot that once again spins off Grammer’s character with a new cast of colorful characters. Some original “Frasier” stars will return to guest star. However, David Hyde Pierce won’t return as Niles and John Mahoney, who played their father Martin, passed away in 2018.
That means Frasier – along with “Frasier” fans – will be surrounded by new faces. With that in mind, here’s a handy guide to the new “Frasier” cast and characters, including where you might have the actors before.

It’s Frasier Week at IndieWire. Grab some tossed salad and scrambled eggs, settle into your coziest easy chair, and join us. We’re listening.
Ask a few diehard “Frasier” fans to name the strangest moment from the show’s 11 season run and you’ll get a few different answers. Some will point to the infamous “Goth Freddie” scenes, in which Frasier’s bookish son shows up looking like a seat filler at a Nine Inch Nails concert. Others will single out the time Frasier stars in a TV commercial that sees his voice imposed on a talking version of Eddie in a nightmarish foreshadowing of TikTok A.I. And of course, someone will mention a stoned Martin Crane explaining that he put his trousers in the refrigerator because he had an idea for “Fridge Pants.” All three are perfectly defensible choices — and they all come from the same infamous episode.

Hey baby, do you hear the blues a-calling? We do! It’s been 30 years, but we still can’t get enough of “Frasier.” Luckily for us, there’s more “Frasier” on the horizon! Not many could have predicted that a “Cheers” spinoff about a lovably pompous psychiatrist unable to take his own advice would have been such a success, but it works, and more than that, it’s magic.
Part of the sitcom’s charm is that Frasier, as played by Kelsey Grammer, is routinely fallible. He’s pretentious, nitpicky, and status-obsessed, so we love to see him fall on his face. What’s unique about Frasier is that it’s never because of the fact he’s smart that he gets tripped up. It’s his pretention,...

"Y'all know how this goes" is how the revived version of "Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs" now begins. Kelsey Grammer, his voice a little lower with age, then kicks into a new version of the jazzy closing theme song to "Frasier," and it feels like a sign of the entire show as much as anything else. Anyone with even a passing familiarity with the 11-season NBC spinoff that aired from 1993 to 2004, or of Dr. Frasier Crane as a character, will have a general sense of how the reboot goes. Airing on Paramount+, the new "Frasier" mostly avoids bringing back too many returning characters, but in doing so, it highlights two sides of the reboot coin. When you reboot an iconic show, you not only have the chance to keep telling a beloved story, but you inadvertently have the chance to emphasize to viewers what really worked about the original. Kelsey...

There’s a joke in the fourth episode of the Paramount+ revival of Frasier that is not the worst to be found in this new take on Kelsey Grammer’s famous psychiatrist Frasier Crane, because there are unfortunately a lot of bad ones to choose from. But it typifies the biggest problem the new show has.
Frasier has joined his new Harvard colleagues Alan (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and Olivia (Toks Olagundoye) for a night of bar trivia, competing against a team of firefighters led by Frasier’s son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott). At one point,...

“30 years ago, I left Boston with my tail between my legs. I had dreams of returning, triumphant. Now, those dreams just keep slipping farther and farther away.”
Paramount+’s “Frasier” reboot is psychiatrist Frasier Crane’s (Kelsey Grammer) latest reinvention. He first reinvented himself when he left Boston for his hometown of Seattle (spinning off from “Cheers” to his own original series). Then he did it again when he left Seattle for Chicago to be with the woman he loved, in the series finale of “Frasier.” 19 years after the original series ended, Frasier Crane is reinventing himself once again. This time, back in Boston, with a new career in academics and a new role as a present father to his (now adult) son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).
If your question regarding a “Frasier” revival isn’t simply “Why?” then it’s surely “Why now?” The late 2010s saw the floodgates open...

Many of “Frasier’s” all-time greatest episodes feature guest appearances by Bebe Neuwirth as Lilith Sternin, the icy-cold ex-wife of Kelsey Grammer’s title character. And the crew behind the the upcoming Paramount+ revival of the beloved sitcom clearly knows it, because Neuwirth is reprising her role for a guest spot in the new series, IndieWire has confirmed.
Neuwirth is the first cast member from the original Emmy-winning series — which ran from 1993 to 2004 on NBC — aside from series star Grammer who has been confirmed to return for the upcoming show. According to the logline provided by Paramount+, the episode will focus on a reunion between Lilith and Frasier at the birthday party of their son Frederick, or “Freddy” (Jack Cutmore-Scott): “Lilith, in classic form, is far from pleased about having to share Freddy now that Frasier is back living in Boston. Oh, baby... I hear the blues a-callin’. And it’s not just me: hundreds of thousands of Frasier Crane fans have started singing the same song. It’s been that way ever since the revival of the hit Seattle-set sitcom was announced, intensifying as it became clear that no one, bar Kelsey Grammer, would be returning. Instead, the Frasier reboot, expected to premiere on Paramount Plus later this year, will drop Grammer’s finicky psychiatrist into a different milieu, alongside a completely new cast. As far as gambles go, it’s a big, potentially legacy-tarnishing one, which many people have already dismissed out of hand. There’s one question almost nobody seems to be asking: what if they actually pull it off?

After years of speculation and exploratory meetings, a sequel series to the acclaimed sitcom "Frasier" is finally in the works. The project, starring Kelsey Grammer in a reprisal of his Emmy-winning role, was officially given the green light by Paramount+ in fall 2022. At that time, it was revealed that Chris Harris of "How I Met Your Mother" and Joe Cristalli of "Life In Pieces" would be writing and executive producing the show, but there were no concrete details about the plot or the characters. Now, as production begins to ramp up, we finally know the first two cast members joining the esteemed psychiatrist on his new adventure.
According to Variety, Jack Cutmore-Scott will play Frederick Gaylord Crane, the son of Bebe Neuwirth's Dr. Lilith Sternin and Dr. Frasier Crane. Previously played by Christopher and Kevin Graves (and Rob Neukirch in a future sequence) on "Cheers," then Luke Tarsitano and Trevor Einhorn on "Frasier,...

Freddy, my boy, will now have a new face on “Frasier.”
The beloved Emmy-winning NBC sitcom landed a revival at Paramount+, headed up by lead star Kelsey Grammer. However, while much of the original cast will not be part of the reboot, Deadline confirmed that some characters will be recast. Frasier Crane’s (Grammer) son Frederick will no longer be played by Trevor Einhorn, but instead portrayed by Jack Cutmore-Scott.
Cutmore-Scott as Freddy will also have a very different trajectory for Frasier’s son, blending traits from both his father Frasier and grandfather Martin (the late John Mahoney). His mother Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) will not be a part of the series as of print.
The official character description for the adult Freddy reads: Charming and handsome, Frasier’s son Freddy is a nuanced combination of his father and grandfather. Years ago, Freddy rejected following in his father’s footsteps—dropping...

The Magicians has been a force of nature from the very start, growing a loyal audience and weaving a tale that bridged our world with the storybook land of Fillory and has become more and more complex ever since. Given its massive appeal, including our glowing reviews over the years, the anticipation was high for the return of season 5, which turned out to be the show’s final season.
The logline for The Magicians season 5 spoke of plenty of magical mayhem that was in store:

Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him. Syfy has announced that the current fifth season of the fantasy show will be its last. Season 5, which is scheduled to last 13 episodes, premiered in Jan. 2020, meaning that the series finale will air on April 1.
Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. The series first premiered on Syfy in January 2016, and has been one of its most consistent shows over the last four years.
News of the show’s end means that the NBCUniversal-owned cabler’s scripted roster has been whittled down to only a couple of returning series. However, Syfy is gearing up to premiere several new offerings in the near future, and recently ordered a pair of shows including one inspired...

Two words come to mind at the end of The Magicians Season 4 Episode 4: love and death. It is an episode that rests on quiet and intimate moments, focusing on specific relationships instead of an overarching adventure; and it works.
The main storyline on The Magicians Season 4 Episode 4 though is Josh experiencing The Quickening. We've known that The Quickening was coming and connected to his sexually transmitted lycanthropy, but not when or what it is. It turns out that Josh either has to sleep with someone else who is L-negative or kill them.
Understandably, Josh isn't sold on the fact that he is either going to have to become a rapist or a murderer to satisfy the urge.
Writing about Josh's sexually-transmitted lycanthropy soon turns into a story about sexual consent and responsibility. Josh is extremely careful about his L-Positive status, knowing that it isn't curable.
Trevor Einhorn's performance on this episode is brilliant,...

Syfy’s adaptation of Lev Grossman’s “The Magicians” fantasy novels finally goes off-book for a wholly original story in its fourth season, and the result is just as spellbinding as ever. That’s not entirely surprising since co-showrunners Sera Gamble and John McNamara had already demonstrated their ability to play fast and loose with the source material, yet stay true to its magical spirit. Despite exhausting all of Grossman’s major plots, the new adventure continues the show’s inspired storytelling, which is both a vindication and relief for longtime fans.
Season 4 picks up directly after the cliffhanger, in which the quest to restore magic has been successful, but it’s now strictly rationed between the Neitherworld librarians. Also, Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy) has successfully saved the lives of his erstwhile Brakebills magic students with a spell that acts as a witness protection program. Although Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) hasn’t been affected,...

It’s the last day of school for The Magicians Season 4.
A group of makeup artists sit in a semi-circle around a monitor and Hale Appleman, who plays Eliot, gives a lengthy goodbye hug to each one. Brittany Curran, who plays Fen, shot her final scene the day prior, and the name on her chair is now covered with pink tape that spells out “Wrapped.” Rick Worthy, the suddenly controversial Dean Fogg, is anything but as he’s walking around the set with a smile and a wine glass filled with candy in his hand. Worthy’s dog Buddy, a burly chocolate lab, trails behind, leisurely wagging his tail and making new friends along the way. Syfy has renewed “The Magicians” for a fifth season just ahead of the fourth season premiere. The show has also promoted Henry Alonso Myers to co-showrunner for the fifth season.
“‘The Magicians’ raised the bar at Syfy and has gained momentum season after season, attracting a new audience to the channel. We are proud of this series as it continues to break the boundaries of storytelling,” said Bill McGoldrick, president of scripted content at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.
Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. Currently, the characters have forgotten who they are, having had their minds wiped by “The Monster,” who has sought them out for still unknown reasons.

SyFy’s The Magicians has conjured its official season four trailer, showcasing the core group’s struggle to remember their identities and rediscover each other. The new episodes start on Jan. 23 at 9 Pm Et/8 Central.
Last season, the core group embarked on the epic quest of the seven keys to restore magic after it was turned off. In the finale, just as our magicians finally restored magic by unlocking the fountain at the other end of the Wellspring, the Library, Irene McAllistair and Dean Fogg swooped in to reroute magic to them.
In exchange, Dean Fogg negotiated the lives of his students, erasing their memories and giving each – except Alice who is now imprisoned by the Library – a new, magic-free identity. Even with their new identities, our core group is far from safe. Inside Castle Blackspire an ancient, powerful and unkillable Monster escaped confinement and jumped bodies to a new host, Eliot.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Magicians” Season 3 finale, “Will You Play With Me?”]
While the season-long quest for all of the Seven Keys is technically over, the ordeal for Brakebill’s erstwhile students is not. In the Season 3 finale of “The Magicians,” Quentin (Jason Ralph) and his friends were just about to succeed in restoring magic to the world when the faction representing the Librarian (Mageina Tovah) activated the fairy-powered Syphon device and diverted the magic to the Neitherworld Library.
Now, instead of having free-flowing magic, it’s so closely rationed that Brakebills instructors can barely perform simple demonstrations. Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy), who had betrayed Quentin & Co. to help the Librarians, is similarly frustrated with his limited access to magic. The timing couldn’t be worse because an all-powerful demon only known as the Monster or Thing has been unleashed upon the world with no one the wiser. The Monster is “something that simply wants…...
