As the amount of premium content continues to steadily grow across the small screen, so too does the demand for casting directors to fill new roles with the best performers, be they big names or fresh faces. But because of the high volume of series in production at the same time, tying up actors’ availability, this often requires extra collaboration, especially when casting SAG Award contending ensemble series.
“Casting is like triage. You have so many characters; you’re fielding so many things at the same time,” says veteran casting director Alexa Fogel. She has dedicated herself to the art of ensemble casting from the days of “Oz” and “The Wire” and has more recently been responsible for building the worlds of Netflix’s “Ozark” and “The Politician” and FX’s “Pose.”

Guest actor casting in today’s increasingly rich landscape of television has evolved far beyond the days of glorified cameos, slumming stars or celebrities doing friendly favors. And the myriad ways that series and actors — from rising stars to A-listers — come together can result in moments of pure gold, on screen and at awards ceremonies.
Ann-Margret took a guest role on Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” to shake off the grief she felt after the passing of her husband. “All of a sudden I get this call from [Alan] Arkin and he said, ‘You’ve got to get back to work!’” the screen icon recalls. Arkin pitched her to series creator Chuck Lorre to play the woman pursuing his recently widowed character, and they were soon sharing scenes together. “At the very end I said to him, ‘You were right.’”

While the Oscars have yet to make room for casting directors — a pivotal part of the Best Picture equation — the oversight isn't stopping the Casting Society of America from readying its third decade of picking up the Academy's slack. Csa announced Monday morning that the 30th Annual Artios Awards will honor Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Rob Marshall and Emmy Award-winning casting director Ellen Lewis for their individual work in the world of casting. The news arrives with nominations in categories of television, theater, new media and short film, and on the heels of the ceremony's move from November to Jan. 22, the thick of the awards season. Feature film nominations will be announced closer to the show date. Marshall, whose adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" bows Dec. 25, will receive the New York Apple Award, "recognizing individuals who have made special contributions to the New York entertainment...

Performers hoping to land a coveted guest role in NBC’s comedy lineup need the right mix of character acting and improv skills, according to Josh Einsohn, a casting director who works with Juel Bestrop at her Los Angeles office. Einsohn, who was promoted to casting director in July, cast “Community” and “Up All Night” with Bestrop, and their office is working on “The Gates,” an NBC comedy pilot set at the gates of an elementary school. On “Community,” Einsohn is primarily involved in casting speaking roles The series, which boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Chevy Chase, Joel McHale, and Gillian Jacobs, is routinely casting “quick, fun, small parts” that can turn into reoccurring roles, he said. “‘Community’ is definitely one of the [series] more open to off-the-wall casting. “The kind of people that we find the best are the ones that are skilled at developing a character and...

Amid all the pilot news that's being released, let's not overlook some of the sweet movie projects, scheduled to begin production in the next few months. Also, unlike most pilots, these movies have a good chance of actually seeing the light of day.Take "Coffee Town," for instance. From the CollegeHumor Media geniuses behind "Nicolas Cage's Agent" and other Internet classics, the project's log line thus far is a version of the "Slackers fight back against shifting societal mores that would force them to stop slacking" story line. But the cast is great so far. Glenn Howerton from "It's Always Sunny," Steve Little from "Eastbound & Down," and Ben Schwartz from "Parks and Recreation" are attached to the project. Casting is being handled by Juel Bestrop of Juel Bestrop Casting, as well as her associates Josh Einsohn and Brittany Jones, who are receiving CD billing for this project. Shooting gets under.
