In December 2023, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Def Leppard and Journey announced they would be joining forces for a colossal co-headlining stadium tour in the summer of 2024. The 23-city “Journey x Def Leppard Tour” kicks off on July 6, 2024, in St. Louis, Missouri and wraps up on September 8 in Denver, Colorado.
Along the way, the superstar lineup will perform at major stadiums in cities like Chicago, Nashville, Boston, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, among others.
The two iconic 80s bands, who previously toured together in 2018, bring along fellow classic rock legends Cheap Trick, Heart and the Steve Miller Band for select dates.
Def Leppard, known for hits like “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Love Bites,” are fresh off a successful 2023 tour with fellow heavy metal icons Mötley Crüe. This time, they’ll take the stage alongside Journey, the powerhouse band behind the classic anthems “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Faithfully.

A newly released rough mix of “Photograph” from Def Leppard’s archives shows a different side to the Number One rock chart hit. Where the version that came out on Pyromania and dominated rock radio in 1983 finds the band singing “Photograph” and Joe Elliott responding, “I don’t want your … / I don’t need your …” the rough mix has less vocals and more space. It sounds almost like a new wave song with more prominent (and funkier) bass, less reverb, and a lot more jangly guitar in the chorus. The cowbell remains the same.

Iconic bands Journey and Def Leppard are back together again for the summer.
Beginning in July, the two bands will hit the North American roads for a summer stadium tour. They’re scheduled to start in St. Louis on July 6 and end in Denver on September 8.
Joining them will be the Steve Miller Band, Cheap Trick and Heart.
The summer tour will be a reunion of sorts, as this will not be the first the two bands share the stage. In 2006 and 2018, Journey and Def Leppard toured in North America together.
“We are thrilled to be back on the road in 2024 with so many good friends as part of this tour,” Journey said on their website. “No matter which city you come to this will be an amazing night of music!”

The San Francisco 49ers were triumphant over the Detroit Lions at Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, but thanks to the game’s halftime show performers, Journey, at least the Lions can go home with a good message in mind: “Don’t Stop Believin’”
The veterans rockers served as the halftime entertainment during Sunday’s game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, performing a four song-set that included “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” “Be Good To Yourself,” “Any Way You Want It,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
Journey’s onstage lineup consisted of longtime members Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain, as well as vocalist Arnel Pineda, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo, and bassist Todd Jensen. The band hails from San Francisco, making their appearance at the 49ers home stadium a fitting choice. Megaplatinum rock stalwarts Def Leppard and Journey are gearing up to hit the road for a North American summer stadium tour starting July 6 in St. Louis. The 23-show jaunt runs through September 8 in Denver and will feature fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Steve Miller and his band on the bulk of the dates, with Cheap Trick or Heart on the others.
The trek will hit Citi Field in metro New York on August 7 and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on August 25, both featuring Miller. See the full itinerary below.
The two headliners have toured together over the decades, but this is their first co-starring stadium affair. Def Leppard hit the huge U.S. and Canadian venues in 2022 for a Covid-delayed tour with Mötley Crüe in 2022.
San Francisco-based Journey has moved more than 49 million albums in the U.S. alone, paced by their 15 million-selling 1988 Greatest Hits.

Ghost are celebrating another triumphant year with a new career-spanning streaming compilation titled 13 Commandments. Among the tracks is the song “Zenith,” which previously only received a physical release.
A press release describes the set as, “A treasure trove for the most fervent devotees and new initiates alike, Ghost’s 13 Commandments compilation chronicles the band’s metamorphosis from Scandinavian curiosity to world-straddling creative colossus — all that and fans are rewarded with the wider release of Ghost’s cult tune ‘Zenith.”‘
The band’s eventful 2023 included the release of the covers EP Phantomime, as well as a new version of “Spillways” featuring Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and a cover of Shakespears Sister’s “Stay” featuring Patrick Wilson for the movie Insidious: The Red Door.

Ghost recently released a covers EP called Phantomime, but they evidently have more covers in them. The Swedish metal band has unleashed a cover of Shakespears Sister’s 1992 single “Stay” featuring actor Patrick Wilson.
“Stay” opens with soft synths providing the basis behind echoing vocals. About halfway through the track, things pick up, as heavy guitar riffs crash in and the vocals take on a more powerful character.
So, how did “Stay” come together? As it turns out, actor, director, and Tony-nominated singer Wilson is a major Ghost fan. He saw the band live twice in 2022 and met up with frontman Tobias Forge while working on his directorial debut, Insidious: The Red Door.
Later, inspired by Ghost’s version of “Spillways” featuring Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Wilson reached out to Forge, who had been working on a version of Shakespears Sister’s “Stay.” The two then decided to collaborate on the cover,...

It is fitting to find Fanny: The Right to Rock broadcast on PBS. The channel thrives on educational material, and director Bobbi Jo Hart’s documentary teaches many lessons. The film chronicles the career, and captures the reunion of Fanny, a group of musicians who changed the dynamics of rock in the 1970s. The lineup was unique, labels and management executives dubbed them the “female Beatles.” They made history as the first all-women rock band to release an LP with a major record label.
Originally called The Svelts and rebranded as Wild Honey, Fanny was formed in the mid-1960s in Sacramento, Calif., by three Filipina American musicians: sisters June and Jean Millington, on guitar and bass, and drummer Brie Darling. All three sang. When Darling had her daughter, Brandi, in 1968, Fanny added drummer Alice de Buhr, and roving keyboardist Nickey Barclay.
As was the fashion of the time, they lived in a band house.

Def Leppard Announce Album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Share Re-Imagined “Animal”: Stream
Def Leppard have teamed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for the collaborative album Drastic Symphonies, arriving May 19th. A newly re-imagined orchestral version of “Animal” can be streamed now.
The collection features 15 orchestral re-workings of some of Def Leppard’s most iconic tracks, as well as a few deep cuts from their catalog. Rather than performing live alongside the orchestra, a la Metallica’s S&m, Drastic Symphonies is an ambitious studio project, combining specific audio from the original master tapes of the songs, fresh guitar/vocal overdubs, and symphonic arrangements recorded by the Rpo at Abbey Road studios.
As heard on the new version of “Animal,” the results are far from “an orchestra plonked over our previous recordings,” as guitarist Phil Collen put it. At times, you can hear Joe Elliott duetting with his younger self, and the new orchestral mix is a completely different experience than the classic Hysteria track.

Dave Grohl, Travis Barker, and Miley Cyrus were some of the artists who performed at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in Los Angeles on Tuesday 27 September.
The show, which was held at the Kia Forum, kickstarted with Grohl’s 16-year-old daughter Violet performing a rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” along with guitarist Alain Johannes.
After that, Foo Fighters took over the stage, announcing: “Welcome to the Los Angeles Taylor Hawkins tribute concert.
“This is the hometown s***, so you gotta make it loud for Taylor.”
Grohl said that the idea of the concert is to “spend some time in [Hawkins’s] musical mind, which could be a pretty terrifying place” and to “celebrate this person that has touched our lives.”
The show continued with performances by Joan Jett, Chevy Metal, Kesha, Coattail Riders, Mark King, Rufus Taylor, Joe Walsh and the James Gang, Cyrus, Mötley Crüe, and Def Leppard among others.

Billy Joel performed at Detroit’s Comerica Park on July 9, just one night before the Mötley Crüe/Def Leppard/Poison/Joan Jett mega tour hit the same venue. It happened to be a night off for the Eighties hard rock groups, and Joel brought out one of the lead singers to give his audience a little preview of what they could expect the following night.

Bret Michaels, 59, was hospitalized in Nashville shortly before tonight’s stop on “The Stadium Tour,” which pairs his band Poison with Motley Crue and Def Leppard. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Classless Act were also a part of the Nashville lineup. The nature of his illness was not disclosed.
The Nashville Tennessean reported that the other members of Poison took to the stage to announce the band would not appear. Cameron Crowe on Marc Bolan and T. Rex in Ethan Silverman’s Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex: “A little bit of Eddie Cochran and a little bit of like futurism and it felt so fresh …” Photo: Neal Preston
In my wide-ranging conversation with Ethan Silverman we discuss why he is indebted to Cameron Crowe, Hal Willner’s work on Kurt Weill, the gift from producer Bill Curbishley of Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Cole Porter, Danny Fields, Beth Orton, Joan Jett, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Snarky Puppy, and Ethan’s interest in Weill, Lotte Lenya, and Bauhaus projects. On-camera comments by Billy Idol, Bono, The Edge, Elton John, Nena, Ringo Starr, Gloria Jones, Rolan Bolan, Richard Barone, Tony Visconti, Bowie, and Crowe provide unique context on the cultural importance of Marc Bolan.
Ethan Silverman with Anne-Katrin Titze: “Hal Willner created probably one of my top five favourite albums of all time.

At the outset of Ethan Silverman’s documentary “Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex,” Billy Idol relays an anecdote about Marc Bolan — the magnetic songwriter and frontman of the English glam rock band T. Rex — getting booed by a crowd of 175,000 at a festival in 1971.
If you’ve heard of Bolan or even heard a single song by T. Rex (you have), it’s no surprise that the anecdote ends with Bolan melting the crowd’s faces with an hour of his churning, groovy guitars and sensually laconic singing, battering his guitar strings with a tambourine and receiving a 15-minute standing ovation in the process.
That’s just the kind of rock star Marc Bolan was, and his charisma is still so powerful, 45 years after his death at the age of 30, that it threatens to derail the focus of the documentary. That focus is ostensibly about the...

Helping to pave the way for women in the music industry, yet with much of their story lost to history, the rock band Fanny is now deservedly getting the spotlight in a new documentary. A world premiere at last year’s Hot Docs and now set for a release on May 27 at Quad Cinema, Bobbi Jo Hart’s Fanny: The Right to Rock examines the Sacramento-based band formed by a pair of Filipina-American sisters in their garage in the 1960s.
Featuring the band themselves, as well as Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Bonnie Raitt, The Go-Go’s Kathy Valentine, Todd Rundgren, The Runaways’ Cherie Currie, Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian, The B52’s Kate Pierson, Charles Neville, and David Bowie guitarist and bassist Earl Slick and Gail Ann Dorsey, the documentary explores their journey, being one of the very first all-women bands to sign with a major record label. In the spring of 2020, Def Leppard made plans to gather at Joe Elliott’s house in Ireland to record a handful of tunes before starting rehearsals for their stadium tour with Mötley Crüe, Poison, and Joan Jett. They knew they wouldn’t have nearly enough time to finish an album, but they wanted to start the process and hopefully resume it once the tour wrapped for the year.
They planned on coming together in late March, just as the pandemic was shutting down global travel along with the entire live music industry.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched “The Masked Singer” Season 6, Episode 9, “Group A Semi-Final,” which aired November 10 on Fox.
Nevermind the bollocks, this will no longer be “Unwritten”: Both the Sex Pistols’ John Lydon – a.k.a. Johnny Rotten — and singer Natasha Bedingfield are the latest celebrities to be revealed on Fox’s “The Masked Singer.” Lydon/Rotten was unmasked as the Jester, while Bedingfield turned out to be Pepper, as seen on the ninth episode of Season 6, “Group A Semi-Final.”
For Jester, no one got Lydon/Rotten right. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg thought it was Dee Snider. Ken Jeong went with Roger Daltry. Nicole Scherzinger guessed Gene Simmons. Robin Thicke said it was Flea. Guest panelist Will.i.am went with Joe Elliott, lead singer of Def Leppard.

When Def Leppard’s members realized they wouldn’t be exploring the world on the Stadium Tour last year, they decided to conquer the backs of their wardrobes instead. A new online museum that they’ve dubbed the Def Leppard Vault (a nod to their 1995 greatest hits comp, Vault) collects images of artifacts from throughout the group’s 40-plus–year history and commentary from the band.
“After months of digging through our personal rock & roll closets (and warehouses, no less!), we present you our history,” frontman Joe Elliott said in a statement.

Today marks the birthday of Fred MacMurray. Writer Joe Elliott provides a fitting tribute to the late actor.
By Joe Elliott
Classic Hollywood actor Fred MacMurray is probably best remembered today as the easy-going father in the popular, long-running 1960s family sit-com “My Three Sons.” As the head of the growing Douglas clan, the pipe-smoking, sweater-clad MacMurray each week dispensed his gentle blend of wisdom and humor to the delight of American television audiences. One might have thought this was the kind of role MacMurray had always played. Not so, a fact that was first brought home to me by my mother. I recall as a kid hearing her say she didn’t much care for him. Not like Fred MacMurray??? “But why?” I asked. “Because of the jerks he played in the movies,” she told me. It wasn’t until much later that I discovered what she meant. As many CinemaRetro readers will know,...

The great Kirk Douglas has died at age 103. Not only did Douglas have a stellar Hollywood career as an actor, receiving three Oscar nominations, he also produced some important films. During a period in Hollywood when studios were still afraid to use blacklisted writers, Douglas defied the ban and put Dalton Trumbo's name at the top of the credits for Spartacus, along with his own and director Stanley Kubrick. That took guts.
Douglas and Stanley Kubrick also made the very fine anti-war film Paths of Glory, an attorney by profession, is desperately trying to save the lives of three of his men who have been unjustly accused of cowardice and will face a firing squad if convicted.
Kirk Douglas was much more than just a tough guy; he was a fine actor, a talented producer, and a man of principle. We'll not see his likes again.
