Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). When González and Paul were cast in the film, Flying Lotus released a statement saying, “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this shit.” And apparently they did kill it, because Deadline reports that Amazon’s Prime Video has just secured the international rights to the film in a high-seven figure pact, nearing $10 million. The film is currently in post-production, so we don’t know when Prime Video will be releasing it.

Musician-turned-director Flying Lotus (Kuso) recently directed a segment in Bloody Disgusting’s V/H/S/99, and his next project is the sci-fi thriller Ash. Deadline reports today that Amazon Prime Video has shelled out a whole bunch of money to acquire international rights.
Deadline reports, “In the biggest acquisition to emerge so far at the nascent EFM, we understand Amazon Prime Video has sewn up a deal with XYZ for international rights.”
The deal is said to be a “high-seven figure pact, nearing $10M.”
Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) will star in Ash, alongside Iko Uwais (The Raid: Redemption), Beulah Koale, and Kate Elliott.

Exclusive: In the biggest acquisition to emerge so far at the nascent EFM, we understand Amazon Prime Video has sewn up a deal with XYZ for international rights to Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) sci-fi thriller Ash, the sophomore feature from producer, rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus (Kuso).
We hear this is a high-seven figure pact, nearing $10M. Talks had been underway for a little while and the deal closed up this week.
Gonzalez will play a woman who wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. She must decide whether she can trust the man (Paul) sent to rescue her. Iko Uwais, Beulah Koale, and Kate Elliott also star. The movie is in post-production.
As we previously revealed, Flying Lotus is composing an original score for the movie, which is based on an original screenplay by Jonni Remmler.

The headlines for when his debut film dropped in Park City were the numerous walkouts (less than 1 percent of the audience to be exact) — but at least the patrons weren’t indifferent. Flying Lotus follows 2017’s Kuso with a sophomore feature film that moved into production last March back in New Zealand. Cherry picking folks like Eiza González, Aaron Paul, Iko Uwais, Beulah Koale and Kate Elliott, Ash will naturally see the artist also contribute the film’s score. Based on an original screenplay by Jonni Remmler, and notable filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is an executive producer on the project.

Aaron Paul and Eiza González are teaming up with Flying Lotus (a.k.a Steven Ellison) for a mysterious science-fiction film called Ash. Plot details remain in shadows, though some tidbits have managed to emerge from the gloom. According to Entertainment Weekly, González plays a woman who awakes to find the rest of her space station crew dead from questionable circumstances. When a man (Aaron Paul) arrives to escort her to safety, she wonders if she can trust this new and perplexing stranger. Meanwhile, Paul’s character wonders the same about the lone survivor of an interstellar massacre.
In addition to revealing to basics of the plot, EW debuted a gallery of first-look images (below) from Ash, Flying Lotus’ second feature film. “The way his brain works is quite special,” González says about Flying Lotus. “He reminds me a lot of David Fincher, who also started in music videos, as...

Nine months ago, it was announced that Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had signed on to star in Ash, a sci-fi thriller from rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus, a.k.a. Steven Ellison. Then, two months ago, we learned that Thompson and Gordon-Levitt both had to drop out of the project and were replaced by Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). Filming on Ash is now underway, with González and Paul in the lead roles – and Deadline has revealed that they’re being joined in the cast by Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-o), Kate Elliott (The Gulf), and Iko Uwais of the Raid films.
González will be playing a woman who wakes on a far-flung planet to find her crew mysteriously murdered. When a man (Paul) comes to investigate the scene, she must decide if she can trust him or if he’s responsible for her series of unfortunate events.

Some guilty pleasures sound better on paper, but the New Zealand horror-comedy "Fresh Meat" delivers on its outrageous premise. The movie, which had its world premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival before making its way to the Tribeca Film Festival's midnight section this week, revolves around a ridiculous scenario that keeps broadening its crazy ingredients as it moves along: A group of convicts on the lam break into a suburban household and take the family hostage, only to learn that the demented man of the house (Temuera Morrison) has turned his whole family into cannibals. In between spurts of gunplay and violent physical comedy, bodies are mutilated and devoured in equal measures, while the only apparently sane member of the household, college gal (Hannah Tevita) falls for badass criminal Gigi (Kate Elliott). That the burgeoning lesbian romance takes place against the backdrop of a crazy rituals and ample gore...

So if Fresh Meat taught me anything about New Zealand’s culture it’s that all the guys are perpetually horny, most of the females are lesbians, most of the police officers are witless morons, and most of the cannibals are religious cult-worshipping natives. Would any New Zealanders like to refute that? Please, I’m all ears, I know nothing about Maori culture and island rituals, except if I want to distract the Tazmianian Devil (whom I can only assume is the island mascot) all I have to do is toss a kiwi bird in the other direction and he’ll chase it. Don’t you watch cartoons? Tazmanian Devils love snacking on kiwi birds!
Aw hell, this isn’t some educational country promoting film though, so I’m just going to assume Danny Mulheron’s B-Movie horror throwback is all fictional, right down to the cannibalistic family who have...

Confession time: I have a soft spot for the Power Rangers. From the very first time I saw the original series debut in an early morning slot on ITV, to the shows recent marathon showings on satellite channel Kix!, I’ve kept up with the franchise even if I haven’t seen every episode. For me the show lost it’s way a little once Disney took the reigns – they obviously chose to aim the series at a younger audience than previously, often toning down the violence and over-simplifying the shows stories (it’s especially obvious if you take a look at the original Far East iteration of the show). So when news broke that Saban had bought back the rights to the series...

Shock has discovered a lil' trailer for the horror-comedy, Fresh Meat, hailing from New Zealand. The film comes to us from director Danny Mulheron whose career in the genre reaches back to Peter Jackson's Meet the Feebles in which he played...Heidi the Hippo!
Since then, Mulheron's been balancing various acting and directing gigs (mostly television in the latter).
Mulheron's latest goes like this: When the Tan gang’s prison breakout goes violently wrong, they need a hideout in a hurry. Picking the McMansion of a middle-class Maori family probably seemed like a safe bet. But how were the Tans to know that this particular family have reintroduced some very old-fashioned cuisine to their dining table? Will the Tans escape the trap, or is there gangster in the casserole tonight?

One of the things I find fascinating about fantasy is the conflicting political beliefs often contained within the books. Fantasy is often an inherently conservative genre; the protagonists are usually fighting to maintain the status quo by fighting against the evil scourge which seeks to overturn their dearly held traditions. On the other hand, fantasy authors seem to be a socially progressive lot, a conclusion I come to from the moral systems they often have in place in their 'good' societies, which I can only assume reflect their own beliefs. It was this conflict that I found to be the most interesting part of Traitors' Gate by Kate Elliott. The world she created is a fascinatingly varied place, without the usual swords and sorcery tropes that I have come to take for granted.
Traitors' Gate is the third book in the Crossroads series by Kate Elliott. Walking into the book...

Cold Magic is set in a world where much of the continents are covered in ice. In many ways it is similar to ours in the Victorian age, on the brink of an industrial revolution. In the cities factories, gas lights and dirigibles are beginning to appear, and the new technologies are taught at the University to young men and women alike. The Cold mages, keepers of the old order, are strongly opposed to these new developments, and claim that they will destroy society.

That a woman created Bella's man-worshipping, abuse-excusing pathology is baffling – luckily strong heroines abound elsewhere
So. Twilight Eclipse. Wolfboy Jacob lurks nudely, rudely, buffly, looking ever-ready for some lupine tussling out yonder. Vampire Edward appears to be struggling with constipation. And Bella, how goes it with her? Do you know, I can't remember. Who is she? Nobody. What does she do? Nothing. Where is she without men? Nowhere. Want to know what Bella's secret power is? It's the power of negation. She's such a deadzone of psychic antimatter that supernatural mojo doesn't work on her. Other characters' magical skills simply dissolve when they encounter the sullen ringfence of her anticharisma.
Bella's passivity, the oppressiveness of her boyfriends (presented as protectiveness), the fetishisation of female victimhood and the unstinting justification of the guys' abusiveness have spurred a strong feminist backlash against the books – a backlash which I fully support. Part of...
