Bill Kenwright, the prolific West End producer behind the hit musicals Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat who would later go on to become an owner and chairman of his boyhood soccer club Everton, has died. He was 78.
In a statement, Everton said Kenwright died peacefully, “surrounded by his family and loved ones.” This month, the Premier League club revealed that Kenwright had recently undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his liver.
“The world of British theatre without Bill Kenwright seems impossible,” said fellow theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh in a statement on X. “In my lifetime, there has never been anyone like Bill. He’s totally irreplaceable, and we will miss him so.”
“Dearest Bill, Somewhere you’ll be singing Let It Be Me and challenging heavenly choirs to look into your Ebony Eyes,” Andrew Lloyd Webber tweeted. “The theatre will...

The feature-length documentary with no sales agent has won Australia’s richest film award, the $71,000 (A$100,000) CinefestOZ Film Prize for homegrown films.
“Putuparri seems to work with audiences because the story touches people’s hearts,” producer John Moore told Screendaily. “We have had many people come up to us after screenings with a tear in their eye saying it has helped them understand what Aboriginal culture is all about … We are hoping that winning the prize will help us find an international sales agent who can get the film into some big international festivals.”
The CinefestOZ Film Festival has been running in Western Australia’s (Wa) Margaret River region for eight years and – especially since the introduction of the prize last year – has become a significant gathering place for Australian filmmakers.
The festival also provided an opportunity for state government agency ScreenWest to stage several industry events, including a day-long series of discussions about the importance of the...

Let’s be honest, Super Mario Bros: The Movie is not a great movie. It’s not even a great video game adaptation. As a movie-loving teen the film was high on my must-see radar, so imagine my disappointment when I eventually saw the film on VHS… However since then I’ve come to appreciate the film for the bizarre Sf-tinged adventure movie that it is, rather than an adaptation of my all-time favourite video game franchise.
A critical and commercial failure on it’s original 1993 release, Super Mario Bros: The Movie has, in the intervening years, become something of a cult classic. So much so that the out-of-print DVD...

I.m primarily a director and cinematographer, but I have always really enjoyed editing. In the .80s, I was cutting music videos on film on a six plate 16mm Steenbeck, including Midnight Oil.s Beds are Burning, and was an early-adopter of digital editing in the .90s, helping set up the Radical Transmission Syndicate, one of Sydney.s first community access Nle suites with a Media 100.

Actors pick up knighthood and Cbe while Pm revives British Empire Medal as reward for 'big society' volunteers
David Cameron's "big society" gong, the anachronistically named British Empire Medal, makes its first appearance for 20 years in the Queen's birthday honours today, rewarding "hands-on" service to local communities.
As actors Kenneth Branagh and Kate Winslet collect a knighthood and Cbe respectively, 293 BEMs, known as the "working-class gong" and scrapped by John Major in 1991 in his efforts to make the honours system "classless", are also awarded.
Revived by Cameron to encourage the "big society" and reward volunteering, Bem recipients include waitress Patricia Carter, for services to the hospitality industry, apiarist Geoffrey Hopkinson, for services to beekeeping, and many others involved with local community work, charities, and sports.
Sir Bob Kerslake, head of the civil service who chairs the main honours committee, said the re-introduction of the Bem for the Diamond Jubilee extended...

Chicago – Tommy Lee Jones’s production of Cormac McCarthy’s two-character play debuted last year on HBO to little fanfare. Now that the film has finally been released on Blu-ray and DVD, it deserves to be placed at the top of every cinephile’s queue. It is, quite simply, one of the best films of 2011 and the finest cinematic adaptation yet made of the great novelist’s work.
Using an oft-sentimentalized premise as its jumping off point, the film delves into a battle between two opposing viewpoints that question the fundamentals of existence. McCarthy’s astonishing dialogue cuts deep into mankind’s most primal obsessions and fears while allowing each man to articulate his impassioned beliefs, which are often as black and white as life and death. It’s only appropriate for the unnamed characters to be credited as White (played by Jones) and Black (a riveting Samuel L. Jackson...

Sex & The City star Kim Cattrall's latest theatre project is to close early due to poor ticket sales.
Noel Coward play Private Lives was scheduled to run on Broadway until February, but it will now close on New Year's Eve after 65 performances.
The production, directed by Richard Eyre, previously played in London and Toronto, Canada.
Producer Paul Elliott says, "Despite fantastic reviews, ticket sales have been slower than we had hoped for and it would be irresponsible to continue running into the notoriously difficult January period."...

The Broadway revival of Noel Coward’s seminal comedy Private Lives will close on Dec. 31, the show’s producers announced today. Starring Kim Cattrall and Paul Gross and directed by Richard Eyre, the production was scheduled to conclude its run Feb. 5, but producer Paul Elliott said in a release that “ticket sales have been slower than we had hoped for, and it would be irresponsible to continue running into the notoriously difficult January period.”
The play, about a divorced couple who rekindle their romance while on honeymoon with their new spouses, won both Cattrall and Gross strong notice from critics.

Destroy All Movies! That’s the cheeky theme to the 12th annual Melbourne Underground Film Festival, which will run on August 19-28.
Festival director Richard Wolstencroft lays out his philosophy for this year’s Muff in an excellent Director’s Statement, which is published in the fest’s program guide. He explains his provocative statement as thus:
“Destroy All Movies” can be taken as a query, a question and even a complaint about cinema itself. Most of us love movies. I still do, of course. I am obsessed by them as ever. Making, watching and showing them. But how often do we question our passion in this kind of ontological sense?
In that regard, Muff is a much more focused and scaled back event this year with less films screening, but with a tighter consideration of local talent, as well as a larger, more provocative stance as ever.

“Of the 10 videos we've done through the years, I felt we have never been truly captured ‘in our element...which of course is on tour, playing to our fans, with our lighting and video show. So I thought it was time to do a video that showed us in our ‘real world’ (unlike the ‘fake worlds’ that are usually created when shooting a promo video),” says Mike Portoy of Dream Theater about the band’s new documentary road video for their new single “Wither” from their 10th studio release Black Clouds & Silver Linings (Roadrunner). See interview with Portnoy about the video below.
