Sony Pictures has acquired film rights to Tarzan in a deal with the estate of original book author Edgar Rice Burroughs, Deadline has confirmed.
Plans are in the earliest of stages we hear, with no writer, director or producer attached to what would be a full reinvention of the popular character first created by Burroughs in 1912; the author continued to write Tarzan books into the 1940s.
Tarzan was the son of English nobility who was raised by apes in the African jungle after his parents were marooned there and died. He had no contact with Western culture until he was grown and “King of the Apes.”
Screen adaptations go back almost as far as Hollywood itself, with the first, Tarzan of the Apes, appearing in 1918. Since then, the franchise has seen long runs on the big and small screen with stars such as Olympian Jonny Weissmuller and Ron Ely, as...

Mike Henry, the rugged former football player-turned-actor, passed away on January 8, 2021 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, likely from his heavy physical contact during his years in the NFL playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers and LA Rams. Although not a household name, Henry carved out an impressive career playing heroic roles, most notably Tarzan in three films from 1966 – 68. I remember stumbling across Tarzan And the Valley of Gold on network TV as a kid and being enthralled by this hulking, well-spoken Tarzan who wore a suit in one scene and the traditional loincloth in the next. Henry took over the role of Tarzan from Jock Mahoney Blessed with a chiseled physique that Weintraub crowed looked like it was “sculpted by Michelangelo”, Henry could easily handle the athletic demands of the coveted part.

The attorney for Tarzan actor Ron Ely and his family has challenged a Santa Barbara County District Attorney report that the fatal shooting of his son was justifiable.
Attorney John Burris said in a news conference Thursday that Cameron Ely never claimed to have a gun before deputies opened fire in the 2019 confrontation. He said Cameron Ely surrendered with his hands up.
An investigation found that Cameron Ely, 30, stabbed his mother, 62-year-old Valerie Lundeen Ely, to death before he was shot outside his father’s home in Hope Ranch, a suburb of luxury homes outside Santa Barbara.

When The Karate Kid premiered in 1984, new students rushed to enroll in Karate Dojos across the nation. However, for anyone aspiring to learn the true ways of Miyagi-Do—or Cobra Kai as the case may be—Dojos weren’t propounding deck sanding and fence painting as part of their curriculum. There are many different styles of Karate. Fans wondered which style Daniel and Johnny were really doing. Now that Netflix has picked up Cobra Kai from YouTube Red, a whole new crop of fans has discovered the show and the question has come up again: What type of Karate do they practice at Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai? The truth is it might not even be Karate.

In 1974, I was 16 and curious to see ABC try once again with super-heroes. One fine Tuesday night, I sat at and watched Wonder Woman, horrified at the liberties taken in the backdoor pilot. Cathy Lee Crosby didn’t have the looks or the costume and the most interesting thing about this was Ricardo Montalban as the heavy.
The network somehow still saw the potential in the character and commissioned a more faithful pilot, this time with a comics-accurate costume and perfect casting in Lynda Carter. In the hands of former Batman scribe Stanley Ralph Ross, the show felt right. ABC agreed and a series of Wonder Woman shows were filmed, set in World War II.
This was the beginning of the jiggle era of television, as prime time was filled with busty, often braless actors and they pandered to the women’s movement with female-led shows that didn’t fulfill their promise.

The world's first superhero, the Man of Bronze, is coming to the small screen, with a Doc Savage TV series now in development.
Get ready for a Doc Savage TV series. Wait...who the hell is Doc Savage? I’m So Glad You Asked!
Doc Savage is one of the most important characters in 20th century pop culture, and perhaps the most important one you never heard of. One of the early 1930s boom of pulp and adventure strip characters, Doc Savage is an essential piece of superhero history, long before anyone had bothered to invent the word. You could say that Doc Savage, the Shadow, and Flash Gordon are the “Holy Trinity” upon which most comic book superheroes drew the most inspiration from.
Created in 1933 by Henry Ralston, John L. Nanovic, and Lester Dent, Doc Savage was the subject of nearly 200 pulp novels, most of which...

Numerous actors have occupied the role of Sherlock Holmes over the decades, some more suited to the shoes of author Arthur Conan Doyle's famous consulting detective than others. One of the finest portrayals is that by Ian Richardson. Yet, sadly, his is also one that is often overlooked, not leastways because he played the character just twice (in a pair of 1983 films made for television), but also because his light was to be quickly eclipsed a year later by the arrival on TV screens of Jeremy Brett, whose interpretation of Holmes is considered by many to be the definitive one.
Sy Weintraub – who produced several Tarzan movies throughout the 60s and was executive producer on the popular long-running Ron Ely TV series –teamed up with Otto Plaschkes (whose producer credits include Georgie Girl and The Holcroft Covenant) with the intention of making several Holmes adventures headlining Richardson.

Milton Caniff’s Steve Canyon (1947-1988) was one of the most celebrated adventure comic strips of the 1950s. The blond, square-jawed hero was on the cutting edge of action as he took to the skies and had adventures around the world. Caniff populated the strip with memorable supporting characters and adversaries so it was a rich reading experience.
The strip was so popular that when Captain Action was introduced in 1966, Canyon was one of the first heroes he could turn into. Somewhat earlier, Canyon also served as inspiration for an NBC prime time series that, sadly, bore little resemblance to the strip (a common problem back then).
In 2008, John R. Ellis brought us this forgotten gem with The Complete Steve Canyon on TV Volume 1 and followed up a year later with Volume 2. The silence until late last year when the anticipated Volume 3 finally arrived, completing the run. Thankfully it came...

Although some of these movies were quite well received, Wilder's later efforts – which also included The Seven Year Itch...

He’s been the God of Thunder and now he might be the Man of Bronze. Thor and the Avengers star Chris Hemsworth has reportedly met with director Shane Black about starring as the title character in Black’s Doc Savage film.
The long planned Doc Savage film, which will be directed and produced by Shane Black—who is also now involved with the Predator reboot—has been slow to get started, and there’s been little news; until now.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Black has met with the currently hot actor Chris Hemsworth (Thor, the Avengers, Thor: the Dark World, Snow White and the Huntsman) about starring in the film version of the famous ‘science detective’, who first appeared in pulp magazines written by Lester Dent in the thirties, and has been the hero of many novels ever since. When last we visited Clark Kent and Lana Lang, they were at college, leaving Smallville behind and as Season Three of the syndicated series arrived, it came with changes. The first was that Superboy became The Adventures of Superboy and then the focus moved the characters from the well-named Shuster University to a quasi-internship at The Bureau for Extra-Normal Matters in Capitol City, Florida. Clearly, the actors were aging and the premise of them being in college stopped making sense, plus menace of the week stories was becoming tougher to make plausible on the static campus. The more plausible setting worked for super-heroes but certainly took something away from the civilian side of life, a similar issue plaguing Smallville in its latter seasons.

Julie Harris, Lilimae Clements to "Knots Landing" fans, has died. She was 87.
The five-time Tony winner first made a splash on TV in the late 1940s with ABC's "Actor's Studio." From there, her TV work was primarily TV movies including "The Lark," "Pygmalion" and "Anastasia." In the 1960s, Harris appeared opposite Ron Ely in "Tarzan" (pictured below) as Charity Jones.
More guest appearances followed, including roles on "Bonanza," "Columbo" and "Medical Center." In 1980, Harris joined the cast of "Knots Landing" as Lilimae Clements. She stayed with the series until 1987. Harris was nominated for an Emmy for her performance on the CBS series.
In 1986, Harris appeared in an episode of "Family Ties" as Margaret Hollings, an older woman in Mallory Keaton's (Justine Bateman) class.
After her time on "Knots Landing," Harris' TV work included many minseries projects. She appeared in "The Civil War" and "Scarlett." Harris' last credited TV role was...

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black is planning to bring another iconic super hero to the screen. Black is planning to adapt the classic pulp-hero Doc Savage for the big screen.
Still riding high from the colossal success of Iron-Man 3, Shane Black has decided to follow up his mega-hit by moving from a man of Iron to a man of Bronze. Black will be helming another page-to-screen super hero adventure, since he has signed on to film a Doc Savage movie. Doc Savage was a popular hero who debuted in the old pulp magazines in the 1930s and 40s, as well as in a series of ‘Doc Savage: Science Detective’ novels, written by Lester Dent. He has also appeared in comic books, a radio show and in a 1975 film titled Doc Savage: Man of Bronze, starring Ron Ely as the eponymous hero. Black’s film will reintroduce the...

In the late 1960s and early 70s, few actors stood as tall in their heroic roles as Ron Ely.
From television’s Tarzan to the big screen’s Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze, Ely’s 6-foot-4-inch muscular frame made the scenery cower when he stepped before a camera.
The 74-year-old actor stands just as tall today, commanding audiences with his tales of those golden days of pulp fiction on film. Warner Archive Collection has brought Ely’s best-loved roles back into the

I’ve never been much of an admirer of Tarzan, the savage apeman creation of writer Edgar Rice Burroughs. While I can’t say that I didn’t like the character, I was always more into science fiction and thus my interest lay with Burroughs’ other, lesser known creation, John Carter of Mars. That’s not to say that I didn’t hate Tarzan, it’s just that he (and his adventures) seemed one-dimensional and pretty tame. After all, what’s there to do in deepest darkest Africa except fight wild animals?
Thanks to the efforts of writer Scott Tracy Griffin, my knowledge of Tarzan and his world has expanded greatly. Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration is Griffin’s new hardcover tome, a 320-page coffee table book that lays out the history of the character, from the original stories written by Burroughs nearly a century ago to Tarzan’s transfer...

We rarely associate hotness with game show hosting, but why is that? It takes bravado, rigidity, and charisma to run a good game show, and I'd say the same rubric applies to male strippers and So You Think You Can Dance contestants. In honor of the late Richard Dawson, the original host of Family Feud and an unforgettable Match Game panelist, I'll be tallying the hottest men of televised gaming. Please remember to phrase your cat-calls in the form of question.
10. Jeff Probst, Rock & Roll Jeopardy
Though he only hosted VH1's Jeopardy! spinoff from 1998 to 2001, Jeff Probst's dimpled cuteness and conversational hosting style were enough to substantiate him as a great emcee. Naturally he's better remembered for hosting Survivor for all of its 5,700 cycles, but he looked mighty fine standing behind Trebek's podium.
9. Richard Dawson, Family Feud
Richard Dawson was most known for smooching contestants and calling out "Survey says!

Of the two biggest franchise-launchers of 1977, one involved a pair of rebellious outlaws with a shaggy sidekick, a runaway heroine, a Mutt-and-Jeff pair of tall-short comic relief characters, epic-length chases, spectacular stunts, and endless vehicular mayhem. The other was "Star Wars." Yep, we're talkin' "Smokey and the Bandit," which opened 35 years ago this week (on May 27, 1977) and wound up grossing more money than any movie that year except for George Lucas' interstellar road adventure. It also launched a truckload of sequels on film and TV, gave Burt Reynolds his most iconic role, helped make movie stars out of country guitarist Jerry Reed and TV sitcom starlet Sally Field, provided a career comeback for Jackie Gleason, and sent Pontiac Trans Am sales soaring. Still, as popular as Reynolds and his muscle car were, there's plenty about "Smokey and the Bandit" that you may not know. Read on to learn Bandit's real name,...

September 8, 1966 was a pretty big night of television for fans of the fantastic. NBC ran a sneak peek of several new shows a week prior to the formal premiere of the prime time season. At 7:30, Ron Ely first swung on a vine across trees as Tarzan while an hour later, Captain James T. Kirk confronted the Salt Vampire on the first airing of Star Trek. While the latter has gone on to great international fame, the former series has always been somewhat eclipsed.
Warner Archive, bless their souls, has rectified that by releasing the complete first season of the two season series. You can find the first fifteen episodes on four discs comprising Tarzan Season One, Volume One while the remaining sixteen episodes are available in the second volume. John Carter, based on the John Carter of Mars series written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, was released last weekend with underwhelming box-office results in North America. Expect a more enthusiastic reception for the Warner Archive's release of the late '60s television series Tarzan (season one, in two parts) in celebration of the Lord of the Apes' 100th anniversary. Ron Ely stars, while guests include former Tarzan Jock Mahoney, Academy Award nominee Julie Harris (The Member of the Wedding), Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols, Woody Strode, Russ Tamblyn, Maurice Evans, Jack Elam, and Chips Rafferty. Also coming out via the Warner Archive Collection are several lesser-known titles that should definitely be worth a look, especially considering the talent involved. Released in a newly remastered print, the 1941 drama Rage in Heaven was directed by W.S. Van Dyke (aka "One-Take Woody"), and stars Ingrid Bergman, Robert Montgomery, and George Sanders. Christopher Isherwood contributed to the screenplay.

Brian Trenchard-Smith looks deep into the art of directing animals, long before the digital age.
When Brian Trenchard-Smith wants to tell you about directing animals on film, you step out of the way. Here’s Brian with many, many wonderful tales (and tails).
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the latest example of how digital makes possible previously impossible animal actions, like a gorilla leaping from the Golden Gate Bridge into a helicopter cockpit. Take a look at the Comicon teaser.
But there was a time when the animal and the lens were all you had to work with. In the pre-cgi era, I was lucky enough to stage sequences involving cats, bobcats, dogs, lions, elephants, boa constrictors, chimps, spiders, scorpions, cockroaches, a mud crab, a pigeon, and a frog.

It’s been five years since one of Hollywood’s most influential pioneers of the action screenplay, Shane Black, stepped behind the camera for his critically-praised directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Now Black may be settling back into the director’s chair in order to revive the long-dead silver screen legacy of classic adventure hero Doc Savage.
Doc Savage was created in the early 1930’s by Street and Smith Publications and predominantly written by main author Lester Dent. He’s an adventure hero, most popular in the “pulp novels” of the 30’s and 40’s. Savage is a man trained from birth in all of the greatest skills of science, deduction, and physical prowess, all of which he uses to solve mysteries and fight crime.
The character has appeared in only one successful film adaptation, 1975’s bemoaned camp-fest, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze, starring former Tarzan, Ron Ely.

It’s been rumored for a while, and has now been confirmed that the popular ’30s pulp series, Doc Savage, is headed back to the big screen with Columbia Pictures, according to Variety. Shane Black (Lethal Weapon series, Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang) has signed on to direct the film from a script by Chuck Mondry & Anthony Bagarozzi.
Doc was one of the most popular heroes in the pulp serials of the ’30s and ’40s, and his story has been adapted several times to various media. Known for his MacGyver-like proficiency at all trades, Clark “Doc” Savage, Jr. trotted around the globe investigating scientific mysteries and helping people in distress with the aid of multiple sidekicks. First created in March 1933 by Street and Smith Publications publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic, Savage was fully fleshed out by head writer Lester Dent, writing under the pen name of Kenneth Robeson.

The Man Of Bronze is getting buffed and polished for a 21st century return to the big screen.
Back in October we heard the first rumblings of a new Doc Savage movie to be written by Lethal Weapon scribe Shane Black, who was also in the running to direct the feature.
Variety now confirms that Black will direct the film from a screenplay he is penning with Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry, while Neal Moritz will produce.
Columbia co-president Matt Tolmach said: "Doc Savage is an icon, a character with limitless possibilities. Screenwriter Shane Black, who first made a name for himself with Lethal Weapon, has been hired by Columbia Pictures to direct Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze, based on the hero who appeared in pulp novels, films and comic books during the 1930s and 1940s.

Some new information has surfaced on the proposed new Doc Savage film, featuring the pulp hero previously seen in a 1975 movie starring Ron Ely.
Yesterday we learned that Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black was about to start work on the screenplay and may also direct the feature.
Ain't It Cool News had reported that it would be produced by the hit writing/production duo of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.
But Collider says the producers will in fact be Neil Moritz and Ori Marmur, who are also producing The Green Hornet, Battle: Los Angeles and the remake of Jack The Giant Killer.
Collider adds that Moritz and Marmur have a deal at Sony and so the film would be made at that studio if it goes ahead. This is intriguing, as Warner Bros released the 1975 movie and made it available on DVD in March this year and it's Warner's DC Comics...
