Exclusive: Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, now best known as the director behind beautiful, taut features like Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, wrote to Swedish screen legend Ingmar Bergman sometime in the early 2000s with an idea. Bergman’s response was characteristically colorful.
“What the hell is this? What do you mean?” Bergman told Alfredson.
Alfredson had told the Persona filmmaker that he wanted to remake Faithless, the 2000 feature Bergman had written about an imaginary woman who recollects her painful experience of adultery to an aging filmmaker. The pic played in competition that year in Cannes and was directed by Bergman’s ex-wife, actress Liv Ullmann.
“This was long before everyone was producing remakes, so it was a very unusual question, especially for Bergman,” Alfredson said.

As the final work in progress wrapped on Friday, Göteborg ‘s head of TV Drama Vision Cia Edström and head of industry and Nordic Film Market Josef Kullengård could finally relax after a mission well accomplished.
Two of their biggest challenges this year – hosting an industry showcase for 700-plus international delegates in a brand-new venue, the Clarion Hotel Draken, and lifting the Nordic industry’s moral by the crisis in the drama sector – had been successfully met. Variety drills down on how and why:
All-Time Record Attendees
As many as 2,029 accredited delegates registered for the festival and industry showcases at the 47th Göteborg Film Festival, and parallel TV and film markets, the largest in the Nordic region. “We’ve never hit this silver line,” said Kullengård. The 18th TV Drama Vision drew 729 delegates, the Nordic Film Market 556.

Once upon a time, there was the Swedish queen of crime Camilla Läckberg, steadily delivering international best-selling adult/children’s books, cook books and song lyrics.
Some of her books have turned into series –“The Fjällbacka Murders” – or soon will be – “The Golden Age,’ optioned by Legendary Entertainment.
One day she met Swedish star actor Alexander Karim while shooting the Swedish show “Stars in the Castle” (“Stjärnorna på slotet”).
“We started talking TV, movies, creative ideas and immediately hit it off!” Läckberg tells Variety, in a zoom interview ahead of Göteborg’s Nordic Film Market. There, her executive produced thriller “The Dog,” starring Alexander Karim and helmed by his brother Baker Karim (“Malcolm”), is having its market world premiere.
The Karim brothers and Läckberg are, moreover, now ‘partners in crime’ in Bad Flamingo Studios (Bfs), a Stockholm-based film and TV production outfit founded to “break the film industry’s norms and barriers.

Tomas Alfredson, the director of Let The Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, is adapting the 2000 feature Faithless — directed by Liv Ullmann from a script by Oscar winner Ingmar Bergman — as a limited TV series.
The series, written by Sara Johnsen (July 22) will explore the tale of love and adultery told in the original film — about the actress Marianne Vogler, married to the acclaimed conductor Markus Vogler, who begins an affair with her husband’s best friend, David Howard — while expanding the story to follow the main characters 40 years on to see the consequences of their actions for themselves and their families. The series will move between the present day and back to the original events, which lie four decades in the past.

Mia (Ruth Vega Fernandez) is on the traditional track: successful architecture career, a wonderful apartment in the city, and she’s engaged to her boyfriend of many years, Tim (Joakim Nätterqvist). Mia and Tim travel to celebrate the 60th birthday and engagement of Mia’s father, Lasse (Krister Henriksson) to Elisabeth (Lena Endre). Mia’s younger brother, Oskar (Tom Ljungman), introduces her to Elisabeth’s daughter, Frida (Liv Mjönes). The idea is for everyone to get along like one big happy family. As with so many Scandinavian films I’ve seen recently there is so much beauty in Kiss Me – from the actors themselves to the lighting as well as the Swedish countryside. Writer and director Alexandra-Therese Keining captures one of the most intimate love stories I’ve seen in years. There is nothing trite or syrupy about Mia and Frida as we witness the evolution of their relationship. Keining...

It just sort of snuck up on us didn't it? For so long Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master seemed like a dream. The Weinstein Co. is taking full advantage of the hype surrounding Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master to not only promote the film, but to place an emphasis on seeing it in theaters in 70mm as it screened twice in New York over the weekend following last week's Chicago screening and now a new clip has come online promoting an August 21 screening in San Francisco at the Castro Theatre. The film is an original story written by Anderson in which Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls. Joaquin Phoenix is one of said "lost souls", co-starring alongside Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Lena Endre, Jesse Plemons, David Warshofsky, Rami Malek and Joshua Close. The film will have a Venice Film Festival premiere,...

A second poster has arrived for Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master which stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Joaquin Phoenix, Laura Dern and Rami Malek. I'm keen to explore this release from awards-focused Weinstein Co, coupled with There Will Be Blood helmer by Anderson. The project should impress. Set in the 1950s, The Master tells of the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as "the Master" whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter who becomes his right-hand man. The film also stars Jesse Plemons, W. Earl Brown, Jillian Bell, Kevin J. O'Connor, Lena Endre and Ambyr Childers...

Is it just me or does this new poster for The Master look like an advertisement for Barack Obama's re-election campaign? Am I missing the symbolism? Maybe I am just a little slow this Monday morning, but I'm not entirely getting the meaning? Is it a message of "hope" compared to the half-empty bottle of alcohol seen on the first poster? Despair leads to Hope leads to... Am I looking for meaning where there is none? A lot of conversation surrounding Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film was swirling over the weekend after it screened for the first time in Santa Monica. As would be expected, reactions were generous for the film in which Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls.

The first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's highly anticipated film The Master has arrived following our first look at the poster earlier this morning. The film is set to hit theaters on October 12 and features Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lancaster Dodd, a man who creates a fringe religion following his return home after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He soon gains a following, and a young drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) eventually becomes his right-hand man. Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Lena Endre, Jesse Plemons, David Warshofsky, Rami Malek and Joshua Close co-star. As one of the final steps in the process of redesigning the site, which is now looking at a solid September 1 launch date, I am preparing my Oscar predictions for this year, which I expect to roll out following my time at the Toronto International Film Festival. Tiff ends September 16 and is where I have my fingers crossed The Weinstein Co. will choose to premiere Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, of which we now have the film's first poster. The Master is set to hit theaters on October 12 and is certainly a strong awards season contender for a Best Picture nomination based on pedigree alone, but for anyone that has seen the early trailers for the film also knows we're looking at a film that may possibly possess upwards of three acting nominations, nevermind the equal potential for screenwriting,...

Pulp Drivel: Brandstrom’s TV Series a Swedish Snooze
There’s something stupendously affirming about Charlotte Brandstrom’s Wallander: The Revenge, a 90 minute episode of a Swedish made-for-television (in 2009!) series, followed by 13 more such episodes, and now getting a theatrical release Stateside presumably because of that successful trilogy about that girl and the tattoo we’re all tired of hearing about. Basically, it’s nice to see that American television isn’t the only international small screen to be flogged and flooded with yawn-athon whodunit mystery thrillers that only manage to question why one need stay through the end credits.
Based on the works of Henning Mankel, one of Scandinavia’s most popular mystery writers, we’re introduced to the aged Kurt Wallander (Krister Henriksson) at a birthday celebration at his newly bought seaside home in Ystad. The wizened policeman’s cheeky friends have purchased the new homeowner a tool set,...

Chicago – Why can’t American studios make thrillers like “Wallander: The Revenge”? As a matter of fact, why can’t we make ones like the recent production of “Sherlock” or even “Luther”? Perhaps it’s something about producing for TV that gives people more creative depth but the best thrillers so far this year have been the three episodes of “Sherlock” and this week’s release of “Wallander: The Revenge,” opening at Music Box today and available next week in a massive DVD box set.
“Wallander: The Revenge” is actually the season premiere of the second series of TV episodes that aired on Swedish television in 2009. While you may be tempted to avoid something produced for TV, “The Revenge” has theatrical caliber production values and performances. If you didn’t know, you’d never guess that it wasn’t made with a theatrical release in mind from the very beginning.

Woah. We knew that the Weinstein Company was about to unveil some footage from Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" in Cannes tonight (and we'll have our reactions from that for you later), but we just got a nice surprise, courtesy of the Twitter account of Megan Ellison, with the first bit of footage from the film, the director's first in five years.
Focusing on Joaquin Phoenix's Freddie, a drunken navy man, this clip sees him being questioned by a superior officer after some kind of incident, as it cuts between Phoenix at the beach, and in what seems to be a submarine, all set to a nifty percussive score that we assume is by the film's composer, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood. This is all before Freddie meets the title character (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who runs a religion rumored to be modelled on Scientology. The clip feels both very Paul Thomas Anderson,...

Here's something to whet your appetite for the fall film festival season. While journos, pundits and fans alike all lamented the absence of Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" from the Cannes line-up this year, it appears The Weinstein Company -- already dominating the festival with buzzed-about in-competition films and acquisitions of would-be crowd pleasers -- were paying attention to the sad-faced frownies on Twitter.

I haven't yet gotten around to cleaning up "The Contenders" section of the site just yet and while some may argue it's too early to look toward the 2013 Oscars considering we just closed the book on the 2012 Oscar ceremony I have to kindly disagree. If for no other reason, looking at films that might be vying for Best Picture next year we get to sort through a bunch of films that may end up being considered the year's best. What's wrong with that? Granted, as is often the case when looking this far into the future, several of these films may end up being duds. Music Box Films recently released a lavish Blu-ray box set with extended editions of all three films along with a complete disc of bonus material.
