- Has had regular or recurring roles in five sitcoms, but her enduring claim to fame is her first one, as the dingy, eternally naive Georgette, girlfriend-turned-wife of anchorman Ted Baxter, on The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970). The featherbrain typecast has been impossible for her to shake.
- Appears mostly on the stage these days and is based in New York. In 2001, she toured with Barbara Eden in the female version of "The Odd Couple.".
- A devout Christian Scientist, Engel did not consult doctors. The cause of and circumstances surrounding her death remain unknown.
- Attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
- Her sister, Robin Engel, was Miss Hawaii in 1967.
- Passed away two months after Katherine Helmond, who also had recurring roles on both Coach (1989) and Everybody Loves Raymond (1996).
- Is interred at Cape Charles cemetery in Cape Charles, Virginia.
