It would seem, given the critical reaction to this film, that the general consensus is that outside the Fast & Furious franchise Vin Diesel can’t headline a movie. Critical reaction is wrong. The Last Witch Hunter is a fantastic example of Vin Diesel’s pre-Fast franchise career – making interesting choices in characters and story. Personally I’ve waited a long time for a Vin Diesel movie as enjoyable as this, which is easily up there with Diesel’s sci-fi horror Pitch Black (I dare say its actually better than that films immediate follow-up too).

Summit Entertainment released their new action/fantasy movie, "The Last Witch Hunter" into theaters this weekend, and all the reviews are in from the major, top movie critics. It turns out that this is another one that didn't resonate well with most of them, getting just an overall 34 score out of a possible 100 across 19 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Elijah Wood, Isaach De Bankolé, Joseph Gilgun, Julie Engelbrecht, Michael Caine, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Rena Owen, Rose Leslie and Vin Diesel. We've added comments from a few of the critics, below. Simon Abrams from RogerEbert.com, gave it an ok 75 grade, stating: " While most other films sprint through expository dialogue, and bluster their way through action scenes, The Last Witch Hunter is measured enough to make you want to suspend your disbelief." Michael O'Sullivan over at the Washington Post, gave it a 50 grade, stating: " As Kaulder, Diesel does what he does,...

The Last Witch Hunter is so dense, so packed with stuff — with spells and strange beings and dreams and weapons and ornate walls and tree roots tangled with skulls and giant swirling apocalyptic black clouds of man-eating flies — that you might not notice at first that there aren’t any people in it. Vin Diesel plays Kaulder, a beefy, bearded warrior we first meet sometime in the Middle Ages, as he kills the ghastly Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht). Witches, you see, are real, and they were responsible for the Black Death, and Kaulder and others have been hunting them for some time in an effort to avenge their loved ones. Right before she turns into a pillar of ash, the Witch Queen puts the curse of immortality on our hero. “I curse you with life! To never know peace! To walk the earth for all eternity!” So he was...

Boring and predictable, The Last Witch Hunter is dreadful fantasy which will probably reach the upper echelons of countless ‘worst of’ lists come the end of the year. The Last Witch Hunter opens in the middle ages, where squadrons of Viking/warriors are battling witches who have unleashed the Black Death upon mankind. Valiant hero Kaulder (Vin Diesel with cool scraggly beard), defeats the all-powerful big-cheese Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht), annihilating her minions in the process. But before she dies, she places the curse of immortality on Kaulder, denying him an afterlife reunion with his dead wife and daughter. Jump ahead to contemporary New York City (played by Boston) where a clean-shaven Kaulder is hunting witches for a secret organization called ‘The Axe and Cross’, getting his orders from ‘Dolan the 36th’ (Michael Caine). After the 36th is murdered and replaced by the squirrely 37th (Elijah Wood), Kaulder teams up...

Robust and ridiculous, single-minded and empty-headed, The Last Witch Hunter is about as unremarkable as it is structurally adequate. That’s not exactly praise, but this Vin Diesel-powered would-be series starter isn’t looking to win any awards – it was manufactured on some studio assembly line, designed to check just about every box it needs to pass muster with general audiences while world-building effectively enough to launch a new action franchise for the Fast & Furious star.
Diesel stars as witch hunter Kaulder, who was cursed with immortality by the evil witch queen (Julie Engelbrecht, obscured by a maggoty face mask) he almost sacrificed himself to slay back in medieval times, after she unleashed the Black Death on humankind, killing Kaulder’s wife and child in the process. If this were Law & Order: Black Magic, which it almost seems like it wants to be, it’d be a helluva lot more interesting than it is. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
First of all, why is Vin Diesel the last witch hunter? It doesn’t make any sense. There should be lots of witch hunters. It’s not like the need for them died out. Sure, Diesel’s Kaulder (K: the sexy new C) has been around since the Middle Ages, cuz a witch cursed him with immortality and stuff — bloody typical — but he was a witch hunter before that when he was still mortal. He doesn’t have superpowers or anything. He’s just a guy doing a job, and it’s a job that still needs doing, even in the 21st century.

Imagine a parallel universe where Harry Potter got pumped up on steroids and you'll have an idea of what to expect from The Last Witch Hunter. Vin Diesel is the unfortunate soul charged with banishing wicked witchery from the world, the kind of man you'd want on your side in a bar fight with supernatural heavies - as opposed to a small British schoolboy.
Like most Vin Diesel films, this lacks wit and subtlety, going full-throttle instead on action thrills. But also like most Vin Diesel movies, this is perfectly likeable nonsense - only this time with flaming swords, instead of smouldering tyres.
Adrenaline and what looks like molten lava start coursing as early as scene one, which sees the moment Kaulder (Diesel) is made immortal by the Witch Queen (a latex-encased Julie Engelbrecht) while he drives a fiery sword through her body.

Vin Diesel returns to theaters this fall in the highly anticipated new film, The Last Witch Hunter – and he’s out to destroy the most powerful witches that ever walked the earth. Kaulder (Diesel) is the greatest soldier of the Axe and Cross. He is joined in his cinematic quest to rid the world of witches by a star-studded cast that boasts Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Julie Engelbrecht, and Michael Caine.
There’s a part of me that enjoys just about anything Vin Diesel appears in. For the most part, everything ends up entertaining. Yeah, he can sometimes seem a little full of himself and look like he’s taking things a bit too far over the top, but I always get the impression that he knows exactly what he’s doing in those situations and you can’t fault a guy for simply trying to entertain people.

Vin Diesel has the fate of the world in his hands in a new trailer for The Last Witch Hunter.
Diesel plays an immortal warrior named Kaulder, who is called upon to help protect New York City when a powerful witch queen is set on releasing a deadly plague.
Kaulder has help in the form of a good witch (Rose Leslie) whose talent lies in dream walking, meaning that she can transport people between the real world and a dream world.
Elijah Wood and Michael Caine also feature in the supernatural action movie, as well as Julie Engelbrecht and Joseph Gilgun.
Diesel revealed on his Facebook feed earlier this year that Lionsgate has approached him about making a sequel to the film.
"So the studio apparently is so excited by The Last Witch Hunter - The Axe and Cross franchise... that they are already commencing on the next one," he wrote.

"So the studio apparently is so excited by The Last Witch Hunter - The Axe and Cross franchise... that they are already commencing on the next one," he wrote.

"Do you know what it's like to live forever?" Lionsgate has debuted the full-length trailer for The Last Witch Hunter, a CGI-filled horror fantasy action mash-up starring Vin Diesel as the immortal "last witch hunter" Kaulder. We featured the first teaser trailer for this a few months ago, now we can follow up with the full trailer and poster. Aside from Diesel, the cast includes Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Rena Owen, Julie Engelbrecht and Michael Caine. I hate to say it, but this just looks way too cheesy and overly-fx-driven to be taken seriously. "I need you to take me to the dream world. It's the only way..." There are all kinds of crazy things in this, flaming swords and flaming trees. I don't even know. Here's the new full trailer (+ poster) for Breck Eisner's The Last Witch Hunter, found via Collider: The Last Witch Hunter...

In keeping with the mystical, elusive theme of the film itself, Lionsgate has kept the vast majority of Breck Eisner’s The Last Witch Hunter in the shadows, teasing fans with a string of brief clips and brooding posters that merely hint at the supernatural mission that awaits Fast and Furious stalwart Vin Diesel.
With the release of today’s full-length trailer, though, the studio has cast a blinding light into the film’s dark core, illuminating some of the demonic threats and evil forces that Diesel’s Kaulder will lock horns with. Moreover, the footage delves deep into The Last Witch Hunter‘s mythology, charting the murky past of our weathered protagonist and his ties to the order of the Axe and the Cross.
From what we gather – at least from Michael Caine’s sobering narration – Diesel is tasked with protecting the human world from the oncoming demons, who...

Is Vin Diesel going to have to choke a witch? Chances are pretty high with his upcoming century-spanning fantasy film, The Last Witch Hunter, that sees him as the titular hero tracking down the broom-riding bad lasses.
Though there’s nothing in terms of footage that has boiled over from the promotional pot, Mr. Diesel has been keen to keep his fans interested in a film that won’t see him growling like an engine whilst being sat behind one for a change, thanks to a brand new close up of the man himself. He’s intense, he’s thoughtful, he’s hairier than we’ve ever seen him. Look on and tremble at the untrimmed Diesel. Tremble, we say!

A new movie going into development includes the unlikely team-up of Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas, Joe). The movie is called The Trust, and it comes from Benjamin and Alex Brewer.
The crime drama follows “two crooked cops, David Waters (Wood) and Jim Stone (Cage), who discover a hidden safe while working in the evidence unit of the police department. The duo’s desire for the possessions of the safe throws them into a deadly well of corruption leaving them fighting for their lives and questioning their every move.”
For some reason I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around the thought of Wood and Cage starring in a movie together. This could be completely awesome or an absolute disaster.

Last month we reported that Elijah Wood had joined a cast that includes Michael Caine, Vin Diesel, and Rose Leslie, and now German actress Julie Engelbrecht has been cast as the film’s villain, the Witch Queen.
