Gary Oldman gives an amazing performance as Winston Churchill in director Joe Wright Darkest Hour, a riveting drama about Churchill and the earliest darkest days of World War II, as Britain faced the crisis of Dunkirk and invasion by Hitler loomed. The film is an admirable work, a mix of historical drama and biopic, but it is Oldman’s remarkable Oscar-worthy performance that is generating the most attention.
Darkest Hour offers more than Gary Oldman’s sterling, stirring performance. It is also a wonderful companion to a couple of other WWII films released this year, Dunkirk and the less-seen Their Finest Hour, both set around he same time in Britain. Combined with director Joe Wright’s earlier film Atonement, which contains a riveting depiction of a...

Director Tomas Alfredson helmed a pair of outstanding films, the gripping ground-breaking Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In, and Tailor, Tinker, Soldier, Spy, a moody, first-rate film adaptation of John LeCarre’s brainy bestselling spy novel. So one has to wonder what on earth happened with his latest film The Snowman, a crime thriller that boasts a cast including Michael Fassbender, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J.K. Simmons, Toby Jones, Val Kilmer, and Chloe Sevigny. The Snowman is not merely bad, it is outright awful. Reportedly, even the director thinks the film is bad, expressing frustration the conditions under which it was made.
Adapted from Jo Nesbo’s novel of the same name, The Snowman focuses on Olso policeman Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender) investigating the case of a missing woman who turns up links to a cold case. One thing...

Sony Classical has announced the release of the original motion picture soundtrack of The Imitation Game, a biographical drama about the English code-breaker Alan Turing starring Benedict Cumberbatchand Keira Knightley. Composed by Alexandre Desplat, the score soundtrack will be available digitally on November 10 and on CDNovember 24.
The opening track of Desplat’s score for The Imitation Game introduces a descending, rippling keyboard theme that reappears in variations in later tracks – first as a string accompaniment that sets the mood for a tragic, dramatic story. The second track skillfully interprets its title, “Enigma” (a reference to both the man Alan Turing and to the code-breaking project that made him famous), with fascinating sounds that evoke the ping of a sonar location and the underwater world, thus playing on the main theme of the story. While “U-Boats” features military sounds, other tracks such as “Carrots and Peas” provide contrasting quietness and emotion,...

The work of author Patricia Highsmith has long been looted by filmmakers for inspiration. Her dark, psychological stories of crime and avoiding punishment, including Strangers on a Train and the Ripley series, have been made into movies by directors as revered as Hitchcock and Wim Wenders. Until now, though, her 1964 book The Two Faces of January has received comparatively little attention. That all changes now. With a great cast (Oscar Isaac seems to be one of the new “that guys,” popping up in small and large roles in a great number of recent releases) and an intriguing premise, this film is starting off with a promising pedigree. We’ll see if it comes to something worthwhile, but for now, have a look at the first promotional image released.
