This article contains spoilers for Battlestar Galactica.
Think back to the early 2000s. Star Trek‘s vision of an optimistic future no longer kept pace with the post-9/11 world. Instead, Trek writer Ronald D. Moore left the franchise to work with David Eick on reviving a cheesy sci-fi show from the 1970s best remembered for its weird cyborg dog and cool-looking evil robots.
And yet, somehow, Moore and Eick made Battlestar Galactica into a hit, an ambitious mix of deep lore, compelling character building, and religious yearning. Not even the controversial final season, which took leaps that rivaled the ending of Lost, could diminish the series popularity.
So why in the world did the Battlestar Galactica spinoffs flop so hard? For Eick, the answer is simple: Poor planning and lack of vision.
“Ron’s involvement vacillated so there was less consistency and less reliability and, as we shored up his absence,...

Don't let the title fool you: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" isn't the only one of her kind. The "Slayer" line goes back millennia, and when one falls, another young girl is called on by destiny. In the season 1 finale, "Prophecy Girl," Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) briefly dies but is revived. The writers took advantage of that technicality in season 2 to introduce another slayer, Kendra (Bianca Lawson) — but she met a swift end.
Enter Faith Lehane (no relation to Dennis) in season 3, played by Eliza Dushku and sharing her actress' Boston origins. Her name is a virtue, but Faith is a rebel — so much so, she bounces from ally to enemy and then back again. In an interview with "Buffy" writers and producers, they discussed how, from the beginning, Faith was meant to be a "psycho" Slayer who would be a foil for Buffy. Production will begin on Part 2 of the first season of HBO’s “The Nevers” on Tuesday in the U.K., TheWrap has learned exclusively.
Season 1A of the Joss Whedon-created sci-fi series, which stars Laura Donnelly and Ann Skelly, was shot last year, with a pandemic-forced shutdown hitting after Episode 6 was completed. New showrunner Philippa Goslett, who took over for Whedon in January following his exit from the show last fall, mapped out the back half of the first season of “The Nevers” with her writers’ room while Part 1 was premiering on HBO this spring.
Donnelly, Skelly and the rest of “The Nevers” cast are all returning for Part 2, which consists of six episodes that will pick up where the final episode of Part 1 left off when it aired on May 16. How else are we supposed to describe an hour that begins, not in 19th century Victorian era London like the show’s first five episodes, but rather in a far flung future in which 5 billion people are dead and Earth’s atmosphere is toxic? There may have been more surprising twists in TV’s recent past, but it’s hard to recall a recent episode that upends a show’s central premise so extremely, so relatively late into its run. And thanks to the coronavirus pandemic interrupting the show’s production,...

HBO released the trailer for its Joss Whedon-created drama series “The Nevers” on Tuesday, featuring stars Laura Donnelly and Ann Skelly as the leaders of a group of “touched” people in Victorian England who are feared by those without their abnormal gifts.
In the video, which you can view above, the mysterious Amalia True (Donnelly) and Penance Adair (Skelly) band together to protect their fellow supernatural people from those threatened by them. This includes the local authorities, who say they want “the wicked punished and the good protected” — but have a skewed idea of who is who.

HBO dropped the first teaser for its Joss Whedon-created supernatural series “The Nevers” on Tuesday, revealing the ass-kicking qualities of its leading ladies who are known as the “Touched” of Victorian England.
Per HBO, “In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is beset by the ‘Touched': people – mostly women – who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities – some charming, some very disturbing. Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a brilliant young inventor. They are the champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces – to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place.”
Watch the trailer above to meet Amalia and Penance and their amazing gifts.

Philippa Goslett, the British filmmaker behind features Mary Magdalene and How To Talk To Girls At Parties, has taken over showrunning duties for HBO sci-fi drama The Nevers.
She replaces Joss Whedon, who exited the series in November, after he said that the physical challenges of making such a “huge” show was more than he could handle “without the work beginning to suffer”.
It marks Goslett’s first major television gig, having previously developed projects for FX, the BBC and Channel 4. Other film credits include Robert Pattinson-fronted Little Ashes.
She will also exec produce alongside Jane Espenson, Doug Petrie, Ilene S. Landress, Bernadette Caulfield. Whedon remains credited as creator and exec producer.

The upcoming Joss Whedon HBO series “The Nevers” has selected Philippa Goslett as its new showrunner and executive producer.
Goslett takes over the role from Whedon, whose exit from the show was reported back in November. Whedon said in a statement at the time his departure was due to being unable to meet “the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic.”
“The Nevers” is still due to debut in 2021. According to an individual with knowledge of the production, production on the first season was interrupted by the pandemic, with the first half of the first season completing production in the U.K. in the fall. Goslett will oversee the second half of Season 1, which is currently in pre-production.
Goslett most recently wrote the 2018 feature “Mary Magdalene” starring Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tahar Rahim. Her other credits include “How to Talk to Girls at Parties,...

Philippa Goslett has been named the new showrunner of HBO’s upcoming sci-fi drama “The Nevers,” following the exit of series creator Joss Whedon late last year.
Starring Laura Donnelly, “The Nevers” was picked up straight-to-series in 2018 and was set to be Whedon’s first TV project since “Dollhouse,” which ran on Fox from 2009-2010. “The Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator exited “The Nevers” on Nov. 25.
“This year of unprecedented challenges has impacted my life and perspective in ways I could never have imagined, and while developing and producing ‘The Nevers’ has been a joyful experience, I realize that the level of commitment required moving forward, combined with the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic, is more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer,” Whedon said in a statement at the time. “I am genuinely exhausted, and am stepping back to...

Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon has unexpectedly departed his upcoming HBO series, The Nevers. The revelation arrived in what some viewed as a “holiday news dump” just before Thanksgiving this week, and both Whedon and HBO’s statements on his exit had notably different vibes.
Whedon had been working on The Nevers at HBO for two years with Buffy and Angel alums Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie. The series stars Outlander’s Laura Donnelly, and focuses on a group of women in Victorian times who fight enemies with their strange abilities.
Usually a steady presence on Twitter, writer-director Whedon hadn’t tweeted anything for over a fortnight, and on late Wednesday when news broke that he and HBO had parted ways on The Nevers, HBO’s statement was objectively brief and certainly lacking in ‘best wishes’ for the show’s creator.

Joss Whedon has exited “The Nevers,” HBO’s upcoming sci-fi television series.

Joss Whedon is leaving HBO drama The Nevers.
Whedon was set to co-write and direct the science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that might change the world.
The drama is still set to air in summer 2021. It was handed a straight-to-series order by the premium cable network in summer 2018.
The Nevers was to mark the first TV series for Whedon since he co-created ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the first solely created by him since the cult 2009 Fox drama Dollhouse. Before that he created the hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Firefly, both of which developed a devoted following that remains strong. Buffy also spawned a successful spinoff series, Angel.

A demon driver’s ed teacher, a shrunken Buffy, and a pre-teen Dawn.
No, these aren’t Buffy Season 8 comic stories, but rather ideas for the much-discussed but never actually made Buffy: The Animated Series. In development hell since the days when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was still on the air, the show would have featured episodes written by faves like Jane Espenson, Steve DeKnight, Drew Greenberg and Doug Petrie, as well as creator Joss Whedon himself.
After the idea was conceived by Whedon and Jeff Loeb in 2001, a four-minute presentation (which you can now watch here) was written and drawn in 2004 with voice work completed by principle cast including Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendan, and Anthony Head. But by 2005, Whedon declared the show to be dead. So what happened?
It wouldn’t have been a straight spin-off or sequel, but rather it would have taken place during the parent series...

In a massive new interview, Outlander and Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore has been looking back on the time he spent writing for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
One of the more interesting tidbits in Moore’s interview with Collider this week is how he got a job writing for The Next Generation in the first place – by strong-arming a script he’d written onto an unsuspecting set tour guide after his former girlfriend had used her connections to get him there.
“I just decided I was going to give it a shot, and I sat down and wrote an episode and I tucked it under my arm and I brought it with me on the set tour,” he recalled. “I convinced the guy that was giving the set tour, his name was Richard Arnold to read the script. He liked it and...

It seems unthinkable that HBO’s “Game of Thrones” could spend another week dominating news headlines more than five months after airing its series finale, but here we are.
Recent days saw the fantasy series making and breaking news left and right, from a controversial panel featuring creators D. B. Weiss and David Benioff, to the pair stepping away from their deal to make a “Star Wars” trilogy, to HBO cancelling a “Game of Thrones” prequel series, only to announce a series order for a different prequel series hours later.
But for as easy (and edifying) as it is to tee off on Benioff and Weiss, it was HBO’s maneuvering regarding the future of the franchise that was ultimately the cause for the most concern.
On the surface, trading one prequel series for the next seems like a straightforward move for the premium cable network. After all, HBO’s...

Updated: After last Sunday’s episode of “Game of Thrones,” Jessica Chastain criticized the show for using the rape and torture that Sophie Turner’s character, Sansa Stark, endured in previous seasons as the reasons for her strength and cunning.
“Rape is not a tool to make a character stronger. A woman doesn’t need to be victimized in order to become a butterfly. The little bird was always a Phoenix. Her prevailing strength is solely because of her. And her alone,” the actress wrote.
Turner plays the “Dark Phoenix” in Disney-Fox’s upcoming X-Men film, which co-stars Chastain.

Described as “an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world,” the series will be written, directed, executive produced and showrun by the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator himself.
Donnelly will play Amalia True, “the most reckless, impulsive, emotionally damaged hero of her time. A menace to stuffy Victorian society, she would die for the cause and kill for a drink.”
