Chicago – Before earning Oscar nom validation for his “Philomena” screenplay last year, British comedian Steve Coogan led a separate life as Alan Partridge, a dopey media personality who symbolized the danger of empowering clowns like him with a microphone, whether on a news program, a late night show, or in a radio booth.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
A daffy concoction co-created by Armando Iannucci (of HBO’s “Veep” and the satirical film “In the Loop”), the character has bopped around different BBC series for years, until now getting his first feature film. With Coogan given a rare opportunity to show his prowess stateside as a lead comedian (he has appeared in “The Other Guys,” “Tropic Thunder,” and “Our Idiot Brother” in side roles), this British comedy does have a special charm. But even a certified comedian can only take a spotty collection of bits so far.

The highly anticipated big screen debut of Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge arrives in Alan Partridge a blissfully straightforward and outrageously hilarious comedy that finds the titular character caught up in a hostage situation at the local radio station in Norfolk where he works. When North Norfolk Digital is taken over by Gordale Media, changes to the staff and the direction of the station are inevitable. Partridge, though, makes a desperate attempt to save his job by throwing fellow DJ Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney) under the bus. Pat doesn't handle his dismissal well, returning to hold the station at gunpoint and unwilling to negotiate with anybody other than Alan. At this point I should probably admit that my prior knowledge of this popular character is virtually...

Fish out your chamois leather driving gloves and Roachford CDs because Norwich's finest, Alan Partridge, is returning for a second helping of cinematic mayhem. Henry Normal, the co-founder of Steve Coogan’s production house Baby Cow, told the Guardian that a sequel to Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa and a new Sky series are both in the pipeline.“We are planning a sequel, yes, that will be great,” Normal revealed at Advertising Week Europe. “We are also looking at doing more Mid Morning Matters and another Sky special, a little bit like Coast with Alan Partridge, except I don't think he goes out of Norfolk.”According to Normal, the writing team will fire up almost immediately. “We start writing now”, he said, “[and] I think we make it at the end of summer.”Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, which pooled the scribing skills of Coogan, Armando Iannucci and brothers Neil and Rob Gibbons,...

Alpha Comedian: a Partridge in a Fair Tree
Steve Coogan is known to North American audiences as the successful writer and lead actor of Philomena, scene stealer in Tropic Thunder, and perhaps for his body of work with Michael Winterbottom at the helm. As Alan Partridge? Not so much. Yet across the pond, the wildly popular character has been featured for over twenty years on every media platform from TV shows to radio and web snippets. Thus, it seems to be a natural progression for Coogan to adapt his egomaniacal alter ego to a feature length treatment via a (mostly) television director in Declan Lowney. While the film produces more than a few rip roaringly funny set-pieces, on this side of the Atlantic, this is nothing more than a comedic trifle to audiences new to the impudent character.

In Alan Partridge, British actor and comedian Steve Coogan is back at it as everyone’s favorite politically incorrect Norwich radio DJ — only this time, Alan’s days at North Forfolk Digital may be numbered. When a multinational conglomerate buys out Alan’s beloved station with the intent of rebranding it entirely, the locally famous radio personality finds himself fearing for the safety of his job.
It’s every man for himself as Alan pleads with his new bosses to sack his co-worker and fellow DJ, Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney), instead of him. Watch the exclusive clip from Alan Partridge...

A feature length version of Alan Partridge has been in the pipeline for years, but according to creator and star Steve Coogan, the timing was never quite right. For those of you out of the loop, Veteran broadcaster Alan Partridge (Coogan) is currently working as a mid-morning DJ at North Norfolk Digital. The station is being taken over by a new media conglomerate, and after a series of unexpected events, Alan finds himself at the heart of a violent siege. Can the radio and TV legend talk down disgruntled colleague Pat Farrell (Colin Meaney), or will this Hectic Danger Day end the career of Norfolk's very own Alpha Papa? Directed by Declan Lowney (Father Ted), and written by Rob Gibbons, Neil Gibbons, Steve Coogan, Armando Lannucci and Peter Baynham, Alpha Papa brings back all your favourite Alan Partridge characters and throws a few new ones into the mix. When it comes to British television if you were to mention Steve Coogan even the most cynical of fan would smile, he is just that type of man. He is a man who will give his all for comedy, and maybe even take a moment to be dramatic if the moment calls for it (think Philomena). The fact is though there will always be a few characters that we will all remember, and no this time it’s not Paul Calf it is in fact Alan Partridge who has his moment to shine in Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.

Alan Partridge: Alpa Papa hits DVD and Blu-ray on 2 December, and we've gotten our hands on an exclusive deleted scene from the film. In the scene, Alan (Steve Coogan) discusses "high-strength weaves" with a disinterested copper as they approach the radio station where DJ Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney) is holding staff hostage. Despite ending up on the cutting room floor, it's still pure gold from Coogan, and contains the ever-quotable line: "Welcome to big school." Check out the clip below... This past Friday at ten in the morning, the lovely folks at Nyff screened the superb Captain Phillips with Tom Hanks, a sensationally acted, edge-of-your-seat thriller in the Argo vein that will have its lead seriously competing for all of the Best Actor nods coming up this season, with its co-star Barkhad Abdi nailing numerous Best Supporting Actor slots.
Sadly, from a high, a low must often follow. Take Declan Lowney's Alan Partridge with Steve Coogan, which screened afterwards. If, on the first day of Christmas, your true love sends you this bird, get a new mate.
Not exactly woefully unfunny, although close, this lowbrow comedy is sort of an Anglicized take on Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Though, it must be noted, the smarmy, self-centered radio personality Partridge came first, having been a regular TV fixture in Britain on and off again for over two decades. And...

Stone slacks, leather cardigan, pale denim – who wouldn’t want to dress like Alan Partridge? This may be dad brand clothing, but it announces you as the most confident man in the room. Driving gloves? That’s nothing. Try removing your coat and jacket then leaving the driving gloves until last. That takes guts, or failing that a complete lack of personal awareness. In other words it takes a Partridge.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa has released a new clip online.
The footage from Steve Coogan's comedy features the Norfolk DJ singing along to Roachford's 1988 single 'Cuddly Toy'. The scene is used in the movie's opening credits.
Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa sees the North Norfolk Digital host drawn into a siege when DJ Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney) is fired after a corporate takeover and takes the remaining employees hostage.
When speaking to Digital Spy recently, Coogan said that by the time I'm Alan Partridge's second series entered production, the writers were deliberately thinking of catchphrases that the general public would pick up.
"We knew that if we had Alan say it, then people would start saying it on the street," he explained.

Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge remains his awful self in this hilarious, ramped-up, utterly English comedy thriller
Steve Coogan's media personality Alan Partridge is a creation every bit as sad, outrageous, pathetic and funny as Scott Fitzgerald's over-the-hill Hollywood screenwriter Pat Hobby. And, one suspects, he is to Coogan what Hobby was to Fitzgerald, a painfully honest view of the worst way he might be, an alter id more than an alter ego. After 20 years in which Alan has appeared in every possible medium except for a West End musical and a feature movie, he at last appears on the big screen in Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.
This extremely funny film takes in two movie genres – the desperate journalist unscrupulously exploiting a sensational story and the siege thriller. Alan Partridge is in effect a comic cross between two classic movies: Kirk Douglas as a once big-time journalist making...

Alan Partridge is a chameleon of media, a character of perfect adaptability because he’s as realized as a fictional person could ever be. Since his debut in BBC Radio 4’s superb news satire On The Hour in 1991 he has worked his way through countless projects, weaving a canon that’s seen him present a chat show, followed his efforts to get his career back on track in the yet-unmatched I’m Alan Partridge and witnessed the publication of an actual bestselling and 100% faithful and suitable autobiography, with forays into documentary-making and charity work on the side. He is Armando Iannucci, Peter Baynham and Steve Coogan’s greatest creation, and if you’re reading this outside of the UK, it’s very likely you’ve never heard of him. With the perceived legitimacy that comes with the leap from screen small to silver, perhaps Alan’s international profile is finally set for its overdue expansion,...

Comfortably broadcasting at North Norfolk Digital alongside Sidekick Simon (Tim Key), former chatshow host, Bond enthusiast and Bouncing Back author Alan Partridge is one of the leading lights of North Norfolk Digital. But when media conglomerate Glendale Media (their emptiness exemplified by meaningless motto ‘The way you want it to be’), takes over the station and instigates a revamp, Alan’s job is in jeopardy. Driving gloves in tow, the hero of the ‘Wales of the East’ convinces the new board that dinosaur DJ Pat Farrell (an excellent Colm Meaney) is the best culprit for redundancy, with a succinct argument – ‘Just Sack Pat’, scrawled in red marker pen on a flip chart.
Later, Pat reacts violently and besieges the radio station, demanding that Alan’s appointed as chief hostage negotiator. It’s time for Norfolk’s favourite son to forget about his Nandos Efficiency System, Roachford sing-alongs and radio discussions...

It’s been a busy couple of years for Alan Partridge, who despite being fictional is enjoying a career renaissance that most regional disc-jockeys can only dream of. Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa sees the North Norfolk Digital host get drawn into a siege when sacked DJ Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney) is fired from the station after a corporate takeover restructuring.
Coogan spoke about creating challenges for himself playing Alan, embarrassing himself in the name of comedy and his favourite Partridgisms.
"I quite like 'cashback', that makes me laugh," he said of his preferred Partridge quotes.
"They were all funny at the time, 'Jurassic Park', 'cashback', 'back of the net'. Eventually when we did the second series we started saying, 'Let's try and think of things that people will say.'
"We knew that if we had Alan say it then people would start saying it on the street."

TV's former King of Chat Alan Partridge (Steve Coogan) is now comfortably installed as a daytime DJ in broadcasting backwater North Norfolk Digital. However, he's thrust back into the media spotlight when sacked colleague Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney) takes twelve hostages in a desperate protest at the station being taken over by a corporate conglomerate. British TV's finest comedy creation sublimely makes the transition to the big screen in a hilarious outing that sees the return of put-upon Pa Lynn (Felicity Montagu), clueless Geordie Michael (Simon Greenall) and long suffering sidekick Simon (Tim Key).

The cinematic debut of Steve Coogan's bumbling talk show host is a quietly audacious triumph
You'd expect an Alan Partridge movie to be funny. You wouldn't expect it to be a coup de cinema. And yet, in its own superficially low-brow, cheapo way, Alpha Papa is exactly that. It's a Fabergé egg disguised as a Kinder Surprise; an intricate piece of engineering done up to look like a whoopee cushion.
Big-screen Partridge has been chatted about for a decade now, and concerns have stayed the same. Surely Alan's petty parochialism isn't cinematic catnip? Wouldn't such a radical shift of situation endanger the comedy?
But in his 21-year career, Alan has already proved unexpectedly flexible. He's straddled radio, TV, stage, print, online, news spoof, chat show, memoir, mockumentary, meta-farce. This quantity of content comes with a downside, of course – many fans are so invested they feel they know Partridge better than his creators.

After years of wild speculation, at long last Alan Partridge fans can rejoice in the fact the Steve Coogan creation has finally made his way to the big screen, with expectations high for his cinematic debut. However, with longer, darker hair, less crow’s feet around the eyes, and evidently more nimble on his feet, it seems we’re dealing with a slightly different Alan on this occasion – and it’s this very fact which prevents the long-awaited feature film from being quite the comedy masterpiece we had expected. Although it certainly is Partridge, it’s just not quite Partridge enough.
It’s safe to say that Alan’s career has been on a downward slope ever since he accidentally shot a guest on his BBC show Knowing Me, Knowing You. Unable to secure a second series, he took the graveyard shift at Radio Norwich, before once again downgrading, now...

Director: Declan Lowney; Screenwriters: Armando Iannucci, Steve Coogan, Rob Gibbons, Neil Gibbons; Starring: Steve Coogan, Colm Meaney, Felicity Montagu, Sean Pertwee, Simon Greenall; Running time: 90 mins; Certificate: 15
Alan Partridge has shown himself to be nothing if not versatile in his two-decade broadcasting career. Steve Coogan's iconic comedy creation has cropped up as sports reporter on The Day Today, chatshow host on the short-lived Knowing Me, Knowing You) and down-and-out TV star in I'm Alan Partridge.
The character has returned with renewed vigour in recent years, spearheaded by fresh writers - twins Neil Gibbons and Rob Gibbons - who were the driving force behind the gutbustingly-funny autobiography I, Partridge, webcam series Mid Morning Matters and Norfolk documentary Welcome to the Places of My Life. Resilient through multiple mediums, it was inevitable that Alan would find his way to the silver screen.

It's T minus 19 days as we approach the UK release of Alpha Papa, the Alan Partridge action movie. What do you make of this first clip from the film?
We've had the teaser trailer and the full length version. We've had the first poster. We've had the launch of the bespoke North Norfolk digital website, and news about the East Anglian world premiere. Now it's time for our first bonafide look at the big screen transfer for Alan Partridge.
The clip charts a crucial moment: as Alan is tasked by the local police force, headed up by Anna Maxwell Martin, as liaison between them and rogue local radio DJ Pat Farrell.
In this sequence we can observe that Alan looks trim with fine glossy hair, though his troublesome skin – particularly very aggressive athlete's foot – is alluded to in a brief check on his suitability for the role. We can also...

Without question one of the most iconic characters in all of comedy, the local radio DJ Alan Partridge returns in his first big-screen outing, Alpha Papa, and you can check out the hilarious new trailer above.
Alan’s radio station, North Norfolk Digital, ends up being acquired by a swanky new media giant, and this sparks a series of events that causes Alan to help the police in resolving a hostage situation led by one of his disgruntled former colleagues, Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney), who has been let go during the corporate shake-up. Alan will have to use his voice as the ultimate weapon to bring this situation to a close.
Though it might seem odd for Alan Partridge to be mixing with guns, from the look of things, Alpha Papa will be going the Hot Fuzz route above all else, satirising the siege genre with Steve Coogan’s trademark wit.
