His House and “Lovecraft Country” star Wunmi Mosaku finds herself an outsider in upcoming crime mystery series “Passenger” that’s heading to BritBox this October. A brand new teaser trailer unveiled today highlights an unsettling atmosphere in the not-so-quaint, snowy town that’s haunted by crime.
The upcoming six-part series hails from creator Andrew Buchan, marking the actor’s screenwriting debut.
The series “explores a close-knit community who are unwilling to face their fears of change, of outsiders and of the unknown. Set in the fictional small Northern town of Chadder Vale, Former Met Police Detective Riya Ajunwa (Wunmi Mosaku) investigates a series of strange and inexplicable crimes that have the townsfolk spinning on an axis. Riya arrived in decaying Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for that ‘one big crime’, the challenge that will make her feel alive again. Then one night local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears.

The Netflix streaming service has a new film chief in Dan Lin – and one of the first projects Lin has greenlit at the streamer is an adaptation of author Ruth Ware’s bestselling 2016 thriller novel The Woman in Cabin 10, which has Keira Knightley attached to star in it as the titular woman! Simon Stone, who previously directed The Dig for Netflix, will be directing the film from a screenplay by Snake Eyes writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (with Stone handling script revisions himself).
Knightley will be playing a travel journalist assigned to cover the launch of a luxury yacht. When she witnesses a passenger tossed overboard in the dead of night, no one believes her story as all on the ship have been accounted for. Doggedly she searches for answers, putting her own life in danger as the boat barrels through the desolate North Sea.

Exclusive: The first call Stephen Garrett made after acquiring the rights to suspense-fuelled book Culprits: The Heist Was Just the Beginning was to writer and director J Blakeson, who he hailed as “the real deal.”
Blakeson “has seen every crime movie and thriller. You can’t catch him out really,” Garrett pronounced sagely. He was ideal, then, to write and direct the TV adaptation of the multi-layered, heart-stopping anthology, edited by Richard Brewer and Gary Phillips.
The result is Culprits, an eight-part thriller starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett in a career-changing role, and Gemma Arterton, about the maelstrom that swirls after a gang of ruthless thieves pull off an ingenious heist.
Disney+ streams Culprits in the UK and Ireland on November 8 and in the U.S. on December 8 on Hulu. Garrett is executive producer, as are showrunner, writer and director Blakeson, and Johanna Devereaux. It’s produced by Morenike Williams.

Exclusive: Jane Featherstone and Liz Murdoch’s Sister saw revenues skyrocket by $100M last year, although the This is Going to Hurt and Chernobyl producer failed again to turn a profit.
The transatlantic outfit’s turnover grew by a mammoth 273% to $134M for full-year 2022, according to a Companies House filing seen by Deadline, as the outfit shook off the shackles of the Covid-19 pandemic and delivered a number of high-profile projects. The vast majority of the revenue came from TV shows.
Sister’s filing pointed to “the realisation of a pipeline of projects and recovery from the delays to the production schedule of programmes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic” as a driver of revenue growth. Big shows delivered in the year included BAFTA-winning BBC drama This is Going to Hurt, The Split Season 3 and HBO/Sky’s The Baby.

Cindy Holland has been named the CEO of Sister, the production company started by media mogul Elisabeth Murdoch and “Chernobyl” producer Jane Featherstone. The veteran executive oversaw Netflix’s move into producing its own in-house content until she left the streamer in 2020. Holland, who spent nearly two decades at Netflix, replaces Stacey Snider, who departed earlier this year.
Sister Co-Founder Murdoch called Holland a “transformational leader in the industry for many years” and said she is the “total package.”
During her Netflix tenure, including nine years as VP Original Content, Holland oversaw the likes of House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Bojack Horseman. She established the streamer’s original programing strategy, turning the DVD-by-mail company into an original series powerhouse. She left in 2020.
“Cindy is exactly the person to help take us to the next level, and I’m really looking forward to working together,” added Murdoch.
Sister launched several years ago and has gone from strength to strength, with Holland the UK-headquartered company’s biggest hire so far following the loss of Snider.

Following a four-year focus on launching and overseeing the growth of Sister, co-founder Stacey Snider is stepping down as CEO and moving into a creative advisor role for the company as well as an independent producer. Snider will remain a shareholder and creative leader in the business.
Sources say the move was unexpected and are surprised by its timing given everything Snider did during the pandemic. Insiders add that Sister L.A. office staffers and several creatives around town were somewhat shocked and taken aback by the decision.
The timing also is interesting given the number of high-profile exec openings occurring around town and, given her qualifications, she might be someone who gets a look for some of these openings at major studios.
Since founding Sister with partners Elisabeth Murdoch and Jane Featherstone, Snider led the investment, acquisition and integration of several content companies in Sister’s portfolio, including Campside Media...

Cannes — News of the death of Mip-tv looked greatly exaggerated if the 2023 edition, which played out over April 17-19 in Cannes, was anything to go by, with Lucy Smith, director of MipTV and Mipcom, Cannes two TV trade fairs, announcing final figures of 5,560 participants, including 5,510 on-site delegates.
That said, attendance was sizeably down on pre-pandemic levels – 9,500 attendees in 2019 – with major European drama sales companies literally counting the cost of attendance and exhibition space versus Mip-driven sales. In a fast-evolving TV landscape, the future and identity of MipTV still remains uncertain. 10 takeaways from this year’s edition:
MipTV: The Impact of Brute Market Forces
Two major macro market trends, both presented by Ampere Analysis’ Guy Bisson’ in an early MipTV panel, go a long way to explaining 2023 MipTV. Global streaming commissions in the fourth quarter of 2022 were the lowest in over two years; unscripted represented 30.35% of streaming commissions last quarter 2019, 50.3% Oct.

First the good news: the weather was spectacular. For three days, the international television market MIPTV, which wraps up in Cannes on Wednesday, was blessed with the clear blue skies and blinding sunshine that have always been the main attraction of this bit of the Mediterranean.
But if the beaches, cafes and seaside restaurants along the Croisette felt like a postcard paradise, the market itself — downstairs in the Palais, the concrete bunker by the Cannes harbor that hosts MIPTV — had a more dystopian vibe. The long, empty, echoing halls and bare walls mark the spots which, in previous years, would have been jam-packed with splashy stands from the U.S. studios and the super-indies: Fremantle, Banijay, All3Media and the like. In their place were a few lonely outposts from public broadcasters and a handful of second-tier sales outfits. It looked like a once-bustling megamall that’s lost its anchor stores...

MipTV 2023 is coming to an end, with many international execs and stars having jetted in for the 60th edition of the sales confab and Canneseries events. Despite large portions of the Croisette being dug up amidst reams of construction work before the Cannes Film Festival, there was a positive feel. That will please organizer Rx France, which has faced down of ongoing talk of the event’s reduced status in the post-Covid-19 era. Footfall was notably lighter than pre-pandemic, but a less frenetic pace isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Read on for our key takeaways.
Scripted Slowdown Is Real
“The TV bubble has burst,” said Studiocanal boss Anna Marsh, who delivered the weighty proclamation during a keynote on Monday afternoon. Her refreshingly candid admission, a reference to the end of the high-end TV drama boom, was echoed by many of the execs Deadline chatted with throughout the week in Cannes.

Sister co-chief executive predicts new opportunities as streamers tighten their belts
Sister chief executive Jane Featherstone has predicted that the TV distribution model will be “reignited in a serious way” as streamers and broadcasters rein in their budgets.
Speaking at Mip TV, Featherstone acknowledged the current financially-challenged market and predicted that changing distribution models will help indies make projects work.
“Necessity is the mother of invention,” she said. “I believe there’ll be far more space for traditional distribution but in a modern, digital way. The period of ‘exclusivity in perpetuity’ is probably numbered.”

Sister co-founder and chief creative officer Jane Featherstone spoke about how difficult it is to back original IP – as opposed to the relentless stream of reboots and spin-offs – in the current climate. “We have to hold our nerve,” Featherstone said. “As producers, we have to try and [walk] that tightrope of kind of giving people what they think they want but surprising people. And I don’t think audiences always do know what they want until they see it, and you can’t always emulate. So we have to be bold and brave.”
Featherstone was speaking in Cannes during a keynote speech at MipTV as she accepted Variety’s 2023 International Achievement in Television Award on behalf of Sister, the production company known for original fare such as “Chernobyl” and divorce drama “The Split,” which she runs with Elisabeth Murdoch and Stacey Snider.

Talent, relationships, and independence are the pillars Jane Featherstone is (again) betting her business on.
The veteran U.K. producer, and former CEO of Kudos, whose long list of credits include such groundbreaking, and global, shows as Broadchurch, Life on Mars, Spooks, Utopia, and Chernobyl, gave the keynote address at the MIPTV 2023, where she outlined the philosophy behind Sister Pictures, the company she runs with executive chair Elisabeth Murdoch and CEO Stacey Snider.
“When I set up Sister in 2015, it was about content and talent,” said Featherstone. “For me, that drives everything we do. It’s about working with the creatives we get to work with, and how we tell stories with people that innovate and break new ground. [It’s] always about the people. Everything in our business is about people and relationships.”

When former HBO executive Kary Antholis convinced veteran British producer Jane Featherstone to board a project about the Chernobyl disaster, the prospect of such an undertaking was far from a “slam dunk.”
“It had to be pushed over the line,” says Featherstone, “and that was with everybody supporting it.” But in the end, the historical drama from “The Last of Us” showrunner Craig Mazin was, as the producer puts it, a “lucky, lucky call” — and one that richly paid off.
The 2019 HBO and Sky miniseries about the 1986 nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine starring Jared Harris and Emily Watson won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, and put Featherstone’s new venture, Sister Pictures, on the map.
Few in Britain were surprised when, later that year, the production company expanded into a global studio simply titled Sister. Featherstone, who spent the previous 16 years with the Kudos production banner, partnered with Shine Group...

At first glance, The Power may seem like a superhero story crossed with The Handmaid’s Tale, but it is so much more than that. Based on the novel by Naomi Alderman, The Power is an epic story about not just women who are imbued with a mysterious new ability but also how the structure of control and hierarchy of our world shifts because of this change.
The Power posits what it would be like if teenage girls across the globe suddenly manifested the ability to harness electricity through their bodies. Some fear the power, while others embrace what it means for those subjugated because of their gender. In a global tale set in various countries, The Power shows us how fear changes the perspective of men, women, and those who identify with a different sex. Sometimes funny, often dramatic, and always shocking, The Power is a commentary on our...

The size of the stake and other terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
