Whenever a producer in recent times has exited their partnership with a star, quite often said producer’s output is not as robust.
It’s a different situation for Bruna Papandrea, who after peeling off from Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard Production Company has been on quite a roll with such TV hits as HBO’s The Undoing, Netflix’s Anatomy of a Scandal and Luckiest Girl Alive, Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers and now the Prime Video limited series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart based on Holly Ringland’s novel. This is all under Papandrea’s six-year-old production banner Made Up Stories, which is devoted to female-centric stories.
On today’s Crew Call podcast, we talk with Papandrea about why she went solo with Made Up Stories, the genesis of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, and more.
Lost Flowers of Alice Hart follows the story of the title protagonist.

One of the biggest puzzle pieces of the spring television season recently fit into place with the announcement that the HBO limited series “White House Plumbers” will debut on Monday, May 1. From three of the comedic minds behind the Emmy-winning “Veep” — David Mandel, Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck — this five-part political thriller and satire explores the events of the Watergate break-in from vantage point of two of its masterminds: E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux).
In the full trailer, Howard’s wife Dorothy, played by Lena Headey, declares the scheme to re-elect President Richard Nixon by bugging their opponents at the Democratic National Committee, “The stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” The series begins with the White House employing Hunt and Liddy to investigate the leak of the Pentagon Papers and zeroes in on their subsequent, haphazard schemes to break into the DNC offices; the...

The story of Watergate is one that truly feels stranger than fiction. It contains every element that a good, fictional espionage story has, and yet, it was actually something that a standing U.S. president and his cronies concocted. It was a truly baffling time in this country's history, which is probably why we are still making movies and television shows about it to this day.
"White House Plumbers" is the latest limited series to tackle the infamous Watergate scandal, but this time, the spotlight is not on former disgraced president Richard Nixon. Instead, the HBO miniseries will follow the lives and lies of E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), two of the so-called "plumbers" that burglarized the Democratic National Committee's headquarters in 1972. Needless to say, the careful mission to ensure the success of Nixon's reelection campaign didn't go as planned, resulting in arguably the United States' biggest political scandal.

Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), members of the “White House Plumbers” group tasked with stopping leaks of classified information who plotted the break-in that failed and eventually led to the collapse of Nixon’s administration. The series follows Hunt and Liddy as they desperately try to minimize the fallout of the breakout, and examines how the events impacted their personal lives.

HBO has shifted the premiere date of the Mark Ruffalo-led limited series “I Know This Much Is True.”
The six-episode series will now debut May 10. It was originally set to begin airing on April 27. The show moves into the date previously reserved for the limited series “The Undoing” starring Nicole Kidman. HBO announced last week that show would be moved to the fall due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
This is the latest television scheduling shift in recent weeks as networks and streaming services grapple with the fallout from the pandemic. In addition to “The Undoing,” FX’s fourth season of “Fargo” and “Genius: Aretha” at Nat Geo have also been pushed back. HBO confirmed within the last week that two of its critically-acclaimed returning series — “Barry” and “Succession” — have suspended production as a precautionary measure.

HBO has unveiled its a new, rather weighty trailer for “I Know This Much Is True,” its upcoming limited series starring Mark Ruffalo as identical twins.
An adaptation of Wally Lamb’s 1998 novel of the same name, the drama follows twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey (Ruffalo plays both) — the former suffers from Ptsd, while the latter is a paranoid schizophrenic. HBO’s limited series bills itself as a story of betrayal, sacrifice, and forgiveness in 20th-century America, and its new trailer indicates the six-episode set will be faithful to the frequently heartbreaking source material.

HBO’s first teaser for its upcoming limited series “I Know This Much Is True” has us seeing double. And while it’s double Mark Ruffalo, which can never be a bad thing, the dark narrative that’s unfolding between the lead characters — twins, both played by Ruffalo — might be a bad thing.
At least that’s how it appears at first.
Based on the 1998 novel by Wally Lamb, “I Know This Much Is True” centers on twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, one of whom suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. In the video above, you’ll meet both of them, as Thomas (who Rosie O’Donnell’s character calls “seriously mentally ill”) and Dominick confront the struggles in their present and the traumas of their past that might have brought them here.

Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America finished up their annual awards show, highlighted by the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, their version of Best Picture. The PGA top prize is a reliable indicator of future Oscar success, since eight of the last ten winners here have gone on to take the Academy Award as well. Are we in line to see that happen again? Considering that the Producers Guild opted to reward Sam Mendes’ 1917, and the fact that that film is currently surging, we very well might be seeing just that. Read on for more, as well as the rest of the winners… PGA not only went for 1917 in their top category, but they rebuffed the Academy with their Documentary prize, going with Apollo 11, despite it not being nominated in Best Documentary Feature. In the Animated field, they picked Toy Story 4, arguably keeping it the slight Oscar favorite in Best Animated Feature.

The last two Producers Guild of America Awards told us which movies — “Green Book” (2019) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact, 21 of the previous PGA Awards winners have then gone on to claim Best Picture victories.
For the 31st annual ceremony slated for Saturday, January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium, we already know the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The PGA’s 10 nominated films are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” All but “Knives Out” contend at the Oscars for Best Picture.

Mere moments ago, the Producers Guild of America announced the nominations for their annual PGA Awards. This is one of the most reliable predictors for the Academy Award category of Best Picture, so pay attention! The ten movies cited in their top category (known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures) are almost always Oscar finalists in Picture. This seems likely to hold true again this year. Read on for more… You can see all of the Producers Guild citations below, but the ten films honored in the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures category are 1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Knives Out, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite. The Best Picture nominees that the Academy cites will likely come from this bunch, though not all will make it, obviously.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

For the first time since the Emmys started formally considering limited series and movies separately from continuing dramas in 1971, no movies are nominated for their acting, writing or directing. The 2019 nominations announcement revealed that this is also the first year that three of the Best TV Movie nominees — “Brexit,” “King Lear” and “My Dinner with Hervé” — have no other nominations. Each contends to be the second Best TV Movie winner without any other nominations, after “Day One,” which tied with “Roe vs. Wade” in 1989. “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” and “Deadwood: The Movie” are nominated only in Creative Arts races.
SEEour contributors react to the nominations in a slugfest.
