When the dust settled on the 2023 Emmy nominations, HBO and Max came out on top with a whopping 127 bids. Eight of those are for “House of the Dragon,” the “Game of Thrones” prequel series that set the water cooler on dragonfire with its breathtaking production values, unexpected twists and mind-blowing time jumps. Even though “HotD” was skunked in the acting, writing and directing races, it still scored a Best Drama Series citation and received key notices for its crafts. Read on for a closer look at “House of the Dragon’s” eight nominations.
In the main series race, “HotD” competes against three fellow HBO dramas that each nabbed more than 20 nominations: “Succession” (27), “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). Then there’s Disney+’s “Andor” (8), AMC’s “Better Call Saul” (7), Netflix’s “The Crown” (6) and Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” (3). HBO’s domination in this category is impressive when you consider...

The tagline for “House of the Dragon” defiantly proclaims that “Fire Will Reign,” and that was certainly the case this past TV season as HBO’s blockbuster caught fire with “Game of Thrones” fans and TV audiences worldwide. After boasting almost 10 million viewers for its premiere episode last August (cementing it the most-watched HBO series premiere ever), the fantasy smash shattered records throughout its 10-episode freshman season run, generating so much mouth-watering buzz for studio Warner Bros. Discovery that expectations are now sky-high for the show’s Emmy prospects later this year.
“House of the Dragon,” the prequel series to HBO’s megahit “Game of Thrones,” was created by novelist George R. R. Martin and collaborator Ryan Condal and stars Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen alongside Emmy nominee Matt Smith (“The Crown”) as Prince Daemon Targaryen and Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. For the better part of a decade, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones dominated the drama series Emmy races and delivered big enough ratings for their respective networks that it’s no surprise they wanted more. In a nice piece of kismet, HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel is arriving the same week that AMC’s Breaking Bad prequel concluded. The nominations for the Costume Designers Guild Awards will be released on Wednesday, recognizing the achievements of the artisans that created some of the most memorable outfits and clothing designs of the year. Following the 10-month eligibility window, the community of over 1,200 members separates the film categories into three groups — contemporary, period and sci-fi/fantasy.
The distinctions between contemporary and period tend to get blurred, especially with modern subjects like Princess Diana in “Spencer” and Venus and Serena Williams in “King Richard” among the selections. However, per the CDG rules, “any entry with at least 51% of all costumes existing in a historical era greater than 25 years [on or before December 31, 1995] from the current entry year will be considered a period entry.”
That puts Jacqueline Durran (“Spencer”) and Sharen Davis (“King Richard”) into the period film field, where it’s indisputably the most competitive. Three of the five nominees from CDG typically translate to an...

The 16th-century Dutch theologian Desiderius Erasmus famously proclaimed “Clothes make the man.” This is categorically true of James Bond, Ian Fleming’s swashbuckling secret agent, whose costumes through the years — from the Savile Row suits worn by Sean Connery in “Dr. No” and “Diamonds Are Forever” to Pierce Brosnan’s dapper duds courtesy of Italian couture label Brioni in “Tomorrow Never Dies” and “The World Is Not Enough” — have come to personify the British spy as much as his proclivity for glamorous women, Aston Martins and death-defying shoot-outs.
Fleming, in fact, altered the face of spy attire forever. Before the British author put Bond in a navy blue single-breasted suit with a four-in-hand knotted tie, spies were walking around in long trench coats and wide-brimmed hats. So 007 is nothing short of a style icon.

Costume designer Jany Temime says working on Marvel’s “Black Widow” was a dream job. She doesn’t know the exact number of costumes she created, but it was “a lot.”
The costume designer who counts “Judy,” “Skyfall” and three of the Harry Potter films including “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I and II” among her credits, turned to the Russian and Norwegian armies and the circus for “Black Widow” for design inspirations as new characters such as Yelena (Florence Pugh) and the Red Guardian (David Harbour) are introduced.
Temime also inherited Scarlett Johansson in the title role, whose costume that had already been established. This time around, she made a few tweaks to allow for comfort, sculpting it to suit a woman’s body.

On Judy, costume designer Jany Temime sought to capture a duality that existed within Judy Garland—the strength and raw talent of an iconic American performer, as well as the weakness that manifested toward the end of her career.
“It’s not a nice, little Hollywood anecdote about Judy Garland. It’s the reason she became what she was in 1969,” Temime reflects. “How you can destroy a soul, just for the sake of making a star of it.”
Directed by Rupert Goold, the drama picks up with Garland (Renée Zellweger) in the winter of 1968, as she prepares for a series of concerts at London nightclub The Talk of The Town. Plagued by substance abuse issues and financial troubles in the final year of her life, Garland nonetheless sells out each show, going out not with a whimper, but a bang.

As costume designer on “Judy,” the biopic about Judy Garland, Jany Temime kept one criteria in mind. “My question was, ‘What would Judy wear for that scene?’ That how I approached it,” says Temime, who also wanted to portray the difference between “the real Judy and the performer Judy.”
But instead of using replicas of the actor-singer’s iconic ensembles, Temime opted to create designs inspired by Garland’s wardrobe. To do so, Temime analyzed every look to understand why Garland chose it.
“She loved clothes. She has been working with the best designers in the world from the moment she entered Hollywood,’ explains Temime. “She was a woman with a huge fashion background. She’s a performer who wore the right thing to give the right impression.”
Filming in London allowed the costume designer to source Arabic, Indian and African prints to build the costumes and paint the picture of a strong woman.

Both “Rocketman” and “Judy” explore the darker side of super stardom for Elton John and Judy Garland: two incredible, legendary performers driven to addictions and other abuses in their search for love and happiness. And the remarkable transformations of Taron Egerton and Renée Zellweger as John and Garland, respectively, required creative makeup, hairstyling and costuming to pull off the spirit of their iconic appearances.
Makeup/hairsylist Lizzie Yianni-Georgiou achieved a grounded, recognizable look for Egerton’s John for the musical fantasy, allowing costume designer Julian Day to take more artistic license with the outrageous, glam wardrobe. By contrast, makeup/hairstylist Jeremy Woodhead reworked Zellweger’s face to approximate the 47-year-old Garland’s gaunt look, while costume designer Jany Temime needed to stylishly fit around the constraining posture of Zellweger’s emaciated, bird-like Garland.
“Elton gave Taron and [director] Dexter [Fletcher] carte blanche to not copy him or make a caricature,” Yianni-Georgiou said.

When dressing a real-life story, there’s always a complicated relationship going on between a designer and History. The balance of fact and fiction, raw reality and cinematic fantasy, must be achieved and thought through. Depending on the project, the scales might tip towards one or the other, but both are always dancing hand-in-hand. Such sartorial dynamics might reflect the production’s relationship with fact or even contradict that preoccupation, either supporting an idea of History or silently challenging it.

Famous people playing other famous people can be a tricky business. At its worst, the exercise yields nothing but an embarrassing impersonation, but there’s always the hope for that moment of transcendence, in which one legend disappears into the skin of another. In recent years, Michael Douglas managed it, playing Liberace in “Behind the Candelabra,” and a pre-“Black Panther” Chadwick Boseman accomplished it twice, as Jackie Robinson in “42” and James Brown in “Get On Up.”
To that list, we must add Renee Zellweger in “Judy,” giving the kind of masterful performance that requires that we forget everything we think we know about Zellweger as an actor. For 118 minutes, she becomes Judy Garland, which is no easy task — Garland is one of the 20th century’s greatest icons, and while any number of drag queens over the years have paid her varying degrees of homage, she was a...

Renée Zellweger performs miracles playing Judy Garland: singing her heart out, baring her bruised soul and acting with a ferocity that ultimately rises to a state of grace. Yes, Judy, the well-meaning but wobbly biopic that can barely contain her take on the late Star Is Born star, is pure Oscarbait — ready made for an Academy campaign and rarely soaring to the level of a portrayal that’s a dazzling, deeply felt tribute from one artist to another.

If it’s taken so long for a bigscreen biopic of Judy Garland to come to fruition, perhaps it’s because the lady herself warned off any attempts with one of her most famous quotes: “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” It is not, admittedly, a saying that has deterred Hollywood from its ongoing fascination with famous people playing other famous people, though it’s a practice that yields more successful Oscar campaigns than for-the-ages performances: Prosthetically enhanced impersonation, for the most part, isn’t a repeatedly dazzling trick. Yet director Rupert Goold and resurgent star Renée Zellweger have pulled off something unusual and affecting in “Judy”: a biographical portrait in which performer and subject meet halfway, illuminating something of each other in the process.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Earlier today, as the world anxiously awaited the premiere of the teaser trailer for "Spectre," the latest James Bond adventure (once again starring Daniel Craig as 007), we were on the set of the film in Mexico City, watching them film the movie's dramatic opening sequence and chatting with various members of the crew. This sequence obviously didn't make it into the teaser, which was weirdly action-free, but it did give us a hint at what's to come from this spy thriller.
Mexico is a location that the James Bond franchise has utilized plenty of times before, most recently in the mostly forgotten Craig entry "Quantum of Solace" and the hotel where part of this action sequence takes place, the Gran Hotel de Mexico, had already been used in a 007 movie -- the even-more-forgotten Timothy Dalton joint "The Living Daylights," way back in 1987 (no, I don't remember that one either).

Sony Pictures, MGM Studios, and Eon Productions have announced highly anticipated details about the 24th James Bond movie. They made the announcement from the Bond sound stage at Pinewood Studios. The movie will be called Spectre, a teaser poster was released, and you will find more information regarding the Sam Mendes directed film below thanks to the official James Bond Twitter account that live-tweeted the big event announcement.
For those of you not familiar with the name Spectre, it's the fictional terrorist organization that was introduced in the Bond novel Thunderball, and it was also present in the beginning of the movie Dr. No. The name stands for SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion, which is led by the villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
Returning to direct Spectre is Sam Mendes, whose Skyfall was the highest-grossing entry in the history of the Bond franchise — not to mention one of the best reviewed.

You’ve never heard a score quite like this. Director Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity is nothing akin to a sci-fi fantasy world, but rather depicts the stark realities of being marooned in the harshest environment known to mankind. It is a real game changer. Audiences will be given the illusion of being in space in ways that are both totally convincing and utterly visceral.
The film opened at #1, had a record setting $55 million opening weekend in the U.S. and is set for a November debut in the United Kingdom. Gravity premiered to critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival with screenings also held at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. Remember the 2003 film Open Water where 2 scuba divers were left stranded and adrift in the ocean surrounded by sharks? Only this time, it’s two astronauts stranded and adrift in outer space running out of oxygen in director Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity.
I haven’t even seen the movie and the three scenes below are already giving me an anxiety attack.
Here they are in order… strap yourself in and get ready for a white-knuckle ride.
Good recruitment videos at Space Camp, dontcha think?
Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, Gravity is a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space.
Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and...

Gravity is a highly anticipated film for me. I’ve been hearing about the film for over a year and I’m a fan of Cuarón’s work. I’m also genuinely excited that his work is being talked about and he has the highest possible audience looking at him when this film releases. Children of Men was simply a masterpiece of sci-fi drama. Gravity seems like a simple premise but this also gives Cuarón a great advantage to inject his style and technical prowess into a film to make it extraordinary. Typically, I don’t like showing off clips of a film out of context but this single take scene just needs to be seen.

Founded in 2007, Radical Studios is a multimedia company that incubated comic books for exploitation in other forms. Among their earliest releases was Hercules, boasting a Steranko cover, and it came with high production values and a bit of a buzz., The character returned for a second miniseries in and this interpretation captured Hollywood’s fancy. After years in development, production on the movie adaptation began today. Thew film enters a crowded summer 2014, especially for super-hero films, coming after Captain America: The Winter Solider and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and just before X-Men: Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy (raising the question whether or not four Marvel Universe films in five months will reach the saturation point).
