I know American Idol is no longer Godzilla emerging from the Ratings Ocean and stomping all over every other network’s primetime competition, but last week’s 8.2 million viewers (and 2.0 demo rating) is pretty dang respectable.

Raunchy comedy “The Bronze” and documentary “What Happened, Miss Simone?” kick off the festival
Robert Redford, John Legend and Nina Simone were all part of opening night at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, but the festival’s kickoff may end up better remembered for a deliciously raunchy and ridiculously gymnastic sex scene.

Nearly all of this year's Grammy nominees have been announced, with album of the year contenders still to be unveiled tonight. Looking at the nominees for visual media — i.e. film and TV stuff — we have a mix of Oscar nominees and winners from last year and potential contenders for this year. Let's take a look… At the top, big ups to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for their "Gone Girl" score landing a nomination. It might be the best score of the year, in my opinion, and I'm crossing my fingers that the Academy's music branch is as cool as they were in 2010 for nominating "The Social Network." Also in there is "The Grand Budapest Hotel," one of a few scores from Alexandre Desplat in Oscar contention this season ("The Imitation Game" and "Unbroken" will be eligible for Grammys next year). Last year's Best Original Score Oscar winner Steven Price was nominated for "Gravity,...

Living in a world obsessed with celebrity when a star is singing on the stage it’s often them that get all the attention, neither they nor their managers would have it any other way really. In 20 Feet From Stardom though we take a look at the singers who often stand in the shadows, either happy to just have their chance to sing and do what they love, or maybe sharing a dream that one day they will be that person in the spotlight and fame will be theirs.
In many ways it’s sad that music is becoming too often about the show and less about the voices. The backing singers have a very important job and they often hold the song...

Mick Jagger sang Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman" at a celebrity-filled memorial service Friday for his longtime companion, fashion designer L'Wren Scott, who committed suicide in March. The service, held at St. Bartholomew's Church in Manhattan, included words of tribute from Jagger as well as Scott's brother, Randy Bambrough; her good friend actress Ellen Barkin; fashion personality André Leon Talley; and actress Sarah Jessica Parker, according to a statement from Jagger's publicist Vicki Scarfone. Poems were shared by Scott's niece, Hannah Bambrough, and Jagger's son, James Jagger. The Rolling Stones rocker's grandchildren, Mazie and Zak, read Psalm 23. Besides...

Why is Morgan Neville's Oscar-winning film the first to put those under-appreciated heroes of the music business centre-stage?
Such a great idea for a documentary, and such a surprise to realise that it has never been done before. Morgan Neville's Oscar-winning film is about the backing singers who have lent their musical talents to many a star name's pop record. Sometimes they have been acknowledged and appreciated, and sometimes not. Sometimes they have been content with a supporting role, and sometimes not.
But once you accept the backing-singer role, it is very difficult to break out. Neville talks to the big players like Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, and he savours their connoisseurship of the great backing singers, and he speaks to the singers themselves, figures like Darlene Love, Táta Vega, Judith Hill and Lisa Fischer.

It’s not surprising that one of the best musically inclined docs of 2013 was pieced together by director Morgan Neville, a filmmaker who over the years has cinematically profiled the likes of Muddy Waters, Hank Williams, Brian Wilson, Ray Charles and so many others. Neville’s latest shows his vast knowledge of rock and roll mythology while highlighting his apt for storytelling economy, digging deep and moving nimbly between subjects yet rarely just glancing an anecdote. This time he’s chosen to unearth those overlooked by history, those whose voices enriched so many classic recordings with layers of youthful soul, yet went unheralded as solo artists, those who will be remembered for living just 20 Feet From Stardom. With expeditious style and an ear for the best mix of relevant tunes, Neville nods to the all important back up singers.
You may not know them by name, but you certainly know their voices.

Mick Jagger is planning on spending some time out of the spotlight so others can have a turn. The Rolling Stones frontman is currently looking into turning 20 Feet From Stardom – the Oscar-nominated documentary that tells the stories of several important backup singers and featured interviews with Jagger – into a one-hour scripted TV series and a Broadway musical. According to The Hollywood Reporter, both adaptations would concentrate on the lives of backup singers who support music luminaries, but the TV series would depart from the film's subject matter by focusing on contemporary artists.

Some of the greatest songs of the 20th century wouldn’t be as catchy or memorable as they are without the backing vocals of artists who have made a career of staying just out of the limelight. The documentary 20 Feet from Stardom examines the kind of personality that such a sacrifice requires by interviewing some of the most prevalent back-up singers of all time, like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill, and Claudia Lennear, as well as the artists whose hits they helped push to the top of the charts. It’s not often that you see a superstar like Mick Jagger or Bruce Springsteen giving away so much credit for their success to another musician, but 20 Feet from Stardom elicits such moments seemingly effortlessly.

If you need to know, “Closed Circuit” and “Runner Runner” aren’t really worth your time and “A.C.O.D.” and “Riddick” are flawed but everything else in here comes with varying degrees of recommendation, particularly the quiet beauty of “Sunrise” and the incredible charm of “Enough Said”. We’re also loading you up since we’ll be off next week seeing flicks in Park City at the Sundance Film Festival. There’s plenty in here to tide you over. Pick your favorites.

What's It About? Being a back-up singer is no easy task, especially when you're working so hard and getting so little credit. Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill, and other singers take front and center in this doc about the women who've revolutionized the music we listen to.
Why We're In: The doc features fantastic footage of performances from every era of modern music -- we dare you not to get teary when you see and hear Luther Vandross doing backup with Fischer and others for David Bowie. Interviews with Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and Bette Midler are icing on the cake.

When we see live concerts of our favorite singers and songwriters, it’s easy to zone in on the lead talent and ignore what’s going on around them. Think about going to a Bruce Springsteen concert, for example. His name is on all the tickets, he’s the one blown up on every monitor, and he’s the guy belting out leading vocals while strumming his guitar – but he’s not the only one on stage. There are other musicians, technical people, and backup singers who all contribute to the experience, yet most of the credit goes to whatever name is on that ticket.
Being a backup singer isn’t easy, but neither is making it as a solo act, and that’s the dangerous balance that documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville approached for one of 2013′s best documentaries, 20 Feet From Stardom. Neville’s film is an entrancing look into...

Invited for caroling and cocktails by David Letterman's Late Show musical director Paul Shaffer and Doc NYC's Thom Powers, organised by Peggy Siegal, illustrious guests celebrated Morgan Neville's Oscar short listed documentary 20 Feet From Stardom with three of its stars - Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer and Judith Hill.
At the Rum House in the Edison Hotel, on a Times Square already in the process of being prepared for New Year's Eve, I felt as though I entered into a scene from Woody Allen's Hannah And Her Sisters. I don't know which - an imaginary one with Glenn Close, Steve Buscemi, Jo Andres, Gretchen Mol, Robert Wuhl, and Richard Kind, directed by Paul Haggis. The evening was all about the joy of performance.

Even if you feel nothing for Stanford or Michigan State, tune in to the 2014 Rose Bowl for the stars of the back-up singer documentary 20 Feet from Stardom. Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill and Darlene Love will be singing the National Anthem at the game New Year's Day. Boy, it’s going to be really hard for the other Oscar hopefuls to compete with a P.R. move like this. Maybe Lance Armstrong could suddenly reveal he was stringing Sheryl Crow along the entire time? That could be something.

The background singers who are the subjects of the Oscar-shortlisted documentary “20 Feet From Stardom” will make an unusual campaign stop on New Year’s Day: performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” to kick off the 100th Rose Bowl football game. While it’s usual to book pop stars with albums to promote to perform the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, the historic college game typically lets one of the participating teams’ marching bands handle it. When “20 Feet” stars Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill and Darlene Love take to the field in Pasadena, it will be “the only known time” that outside.

Chicago – One the great points in “20 Feet from Stardom” is that often in our favorite hit songs, we sing along to the background singers rather than the lead vocal (“Sweet home Alabama, Where the skies are so blue…”). These classic songsters come front and center in “20 Feet from Stardom.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The title is an irony, of course, in the so-close-but-yet-so-far nature of hit record fame. By spotlighting the background singers of those familiar songs, it also highlights the struggles when the backgrounders weren’t needed anymore, and their sometimes harsh attempts at trying to come out front and have their own identity. This is a life lesson, as we see the titans of rock – Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger – extolling the virtues of their backup help, but also being kind of forlorn about the frustrations of those colleagues not making it to the big time. The documentary is both a...

The new Superman is super hot, but People's critic says 20 Feet From Stardom is the weekend's best bet. See This• Man of SteelGet the paper bags ready, fanboys, because the plot of the new Superman will make you hyperventilate with its Krypton-heavy backstory and angsty vibe. Before I get to that, though, the straight ladies and gay dudes need a moment to lust after the Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavill. People, I share with you that within his first three minutes onscreen, Cavill is shirtless and on fire. I don't mean he's merely hot - or even smoldering in...

Los Angeles — In the span of American pop music, few performers have gone as unrecognized as the backup vocalists who harmonize and contextualize the songs of many a heralded lead musician. With "20 Feet From Stardom," some of the most notable finally get their due, but more than a tribute, the film is a recognition of the talent and sacrifice that many of these vocalists have invested in often challenging careers.
With a documentary career that's richly profiled the likes of Muddy Waters, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, The Rolling Stones and Pearl Jam, Emmy-award winning director Morgan Neville brings an impressive wealth of talent and depth of experience to the project, enhanced by the decades-long perspective of producer and former A&M music exec Gil Friesen, who died late last year.

The irresistible, affecting, crowd-pleasing "20 Feet from Stardom," about largely anonymous and prodigiously talented backup singers, premiered at Sundance in January, where it was nominated for both the Grand Jury Prize in documentary and the editing award, and was acquired by Weinstein Co. boutique label RADiUS out of the fest. The film hits theaters June 14. (Clips below.) I caught the film opening night at the first ever Louisiana International Film Festival. "20 Feet from Stardom" features Merry Clayton, Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Lisa Fischer, Tata Vega, and Claudia Linnear, all of whom aspired to solo careers and released albums, but somehow never achieved the kind of stardom of the singers they sang backup to, including Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, who also appear, singing the praises (pun intended) of their lesser-known but equally gifted colleagues. It's moving both in its story-telling as well as the astonishing performances, shown in both...

Los Angeles — For one night only, the Rolling Stones were an up-and-coming band again.
The legendary group rocked a small club in Los Angeles on Saturday night for a minuscule crowd compared to the thousands set to see them launch their "50 and Counting" anniversary tour a week later on May 3 at the Staples Center.
The band kicked off Saturday's hush-hush 90-minute concert at the Echoplex in the hip Echo Park neighborhood with "You Got Me Rocking" before catapulting into a mix of new and old material, as well as their bluesy covers of classics from Otis Redding ("That's How Strong My Love Is"), Chuck Berry ("Little Queenie") and The Temptations ("Just My Imagination").
"Welcome to Echo Park, a neighborhood that's always coming up – and I'm glad you're here to welcome an up-and-coming band," lead singer Mick Jagger joked after the second song of the evening, "Respectable."
Despite clocking in several decades as a band,...
