Exclusive: Freestyle Digital Media has found its next starry acquisition in The Winter House, a romantic thriller starring Lili Taylor (Mystic Pizza) and François Arnaud (The Borgias) that it will release on digital platforms October 13th.
Written and directed by Keith Boynton, the film tells the story of a female novelist who encounters a mysterious young drifter when she rents a remote lakeside cabin for the winter.
Eileen (Taylor) is grieving and needs to get away, so she rents a house in a remote corner of New Hampshire, in the dead of winter, where no one is likely to bother her. Nevertheless, someone does begin to bother her — a young drifter named Jesse (Arnaud). Jesse is young, impetuous, charismatic, and evasive. He claims to be the son of the couple who own the house, but Eileen isn’t inclined to believe him. She’s a brilliant writer with her own demons and secrets,...

This year’s Tony race for Best Musical Revival has two Stephen Sondheim shows (“Into the Woods” and “Sweeney Todd”) in contention. Will one of them win or will they cancel each other out? Let’s go over both of them.
“Into the Woods” combines several fairy tales and explores the consequences of the characters’ quests. The main storyline focuses on a childless baker and his wife as they go into the woods to break a spell set upon them by a witch. There they run into various classic fairy tale characters, all before revealing what happens after “happily ever after.”
The original production won three Tonys in 1988 for Best Actress (Musical) for Joanna Gleason, Best Musical Book for James Lapine, and Best Original Score for Sondheim. Meanwhile, Best Musical that year went to “The Phantom of the Opera,” which wound up with six other awards. The last remounting of...

When Jesse Green wrote in his New York Times review of this season’s revival of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” that the show had been “restored to its proper size,” he meant its orchestrations, staging, and ensemble, but he could have been forecasting its Tony Awards nominations success, too. This most recent remounting of the legendary Stephen Sondheim musical received eight Tony bids, the most of any musical revival of the year. But how does it stack up against the original production and the two revivals that preceded it?
While this “Sweeney” is back to its original scale, it is actually just shy of the very first production in terms of the Tonys, missing its nominations record by one. The original from 1979 netted nine bids for Best Musical, Director (Hal Prince), Actor (Len Cariou), Actress (Angela Lansbury), Score, Book, and Scenic, Costume and Lighting Designs. The...

TV nunning is a broad church. Sometimes, it’s all gunfire, demon-dissolving punches and running through walls, as in Netflix’s latest comic book adaptation Warrior Nun. In that show, a mystical artifact gives a non-believing teen superpowers passed down the generations from holy sister to holy sister. Defeat the demons, protect the world, praise the Lord, and so on.
Other fictional TV nuns lead quieter, more cake-focused lives, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t also fighters. You might say that like superheroes, not all warrior nuns wear capes. You’d be wrong – nuns definitely wear capes. They’re called mantles and though roomy and practical, likely represent a significant time commitment with regard to ironing.
Warrior Nun‘s superpowered teen follows in the echoey footsteps of a whole conventful of fictional TV nuns remembered here – some good, some bad, some inordinately fond of biscuits, but all, in their own way,...

Lili Taylor, who recently was seen in the Sundance film The Evening Hour, and The Borgias actor Francois Arnaud have signed on to star in The Winter House, an indie romantic thriller from writer-director Keith Boynton.
Hunter Emery, Beth Fowler and Stephen Bradbury co-star in the film, which is being produced by Tony Glazer and Summer Crockett Moore under their Choice Films banner.
The film tells the story of a brilliant and successful novelist (Taylor) seeking solitude in a rental home on a remote corner of New England in the dead of winter who encounters a handsome, charismatic and troubled grifter (Arnaud) who claims he’s the son of the landlord. As winter wears on, two lost souls will offer each other salvation, both knowing full well that the opposite is far more likely.

Older Millennials are typically hesitant to claim the much-maligned label, but slap some “Sister Act” on the TV and you’ll soon see who was born after 1982. One look at Whoopi Goldberg in that nun’s habit, and they won’t be able to stop from singing, “Oh Happy Day.” It’s been 25 years since the comedy first debuted, and Goldberg used her post on “The View” to reunite members of the original cast for a rousing version of “I Will Follow Him.”
Goldberg was joined by supporting players Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena, as well as Sheri Izzard, Darlene Koldenhoven, Beth Fowler (of “Orange is The New Black” renown), Andrea Robinson, and Prudence Holmes. The cast was backed up by a few extra choir members to round out the harmonies, which might not have been a bad idea judging from how some of their voices have aged. One thing...

In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

A bit of a change of pace this week as I'll be looking at the three episodes leading up to the third season finale of "Orange is the New Black" in order to leave the 90-minute, final episode to be discussed on its own. These were interesting episodes to watch together. All three take on controversial topics and several scenes were hard to watch. Sexual violence has been a topic explored to varying degrees of success this year on television (with "Game of Thrones" on one end and "Outlander" on the other of the success spectrum). "Orange is the New Black" feels uniquely positioned to confront the topic head on without flinching but still not come across as exploitative. Starting with "A Tittin' and a Hairin'" all three episodes belong to Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) to varying degrees. Her journey this season has added more of an understanding her character than...

As season three of "Orange is the New Black" continues to explore the inner workings of the prison itself and how McC's acquisition impacts the staff and inmates, for the first time since the series began, I find myself more interested in what happens to the staff. I find the privatization of Litchfield fascinating and believe it is an important story to tell, but I can also see the difficulty some would have with it. However, in between the McC drama, episodes six and seven of season three, "Ching Chong Chang" and "Tongue-Tied", choose to bring minor characters to the foreground and it feels like a detour. The season thus far has really lacked the central, character-driven focus that has been the hallmark of years past, making it difficult for some to find something to grab onto. Exploring Chang (Lori Tan Chinn) and Norma's (Annie Golden) backstories in the "Ching...

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

Filled with action and tension, the season finale “We Have Manners. We’re Polite,” leaves us in anticipation for the next season to arrive. Vee (Lorraine Toussaint) plots to get out of trouble by getting Black Cindy (Adrienne C. Moore) and Janae (Vicky Jeudy) to tell the men investigating Red’s (Kate Mulgrew) attack that they believe Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) committed the crime. Blindly, and stupidly, following Vee, the two follow their orders and Crazy Eyes becomes the number one suspect in the case, even though many inmates said they believed Vee attacked Red. To get herself out of trouble, Vee tells Crazy Eyes that she was the one who attacked Red and Crazy Eyes begins to believe that she was the one who did it. When questioned, Crazy Eyes tells the police she is confused and doesn’t remember it but that she attacked Red. The investigators, who...

Throughout most of Orange is the New Black, fans have wondered how a sweet, old nun could be in prison. Episode 11 shows Sister Jane Ingalls (Beth Fowler) from her first days as a nun. When she first began her life as a nun, she attended a protest against war with two other new nuns. One of the women lied to Sister Ingalls and told her that they got permission to go to the protest, but the nuns end up in trouble. After her first taste of protest, Sister gets too involved with other protests because she loves the fame she receives. After protesting often to get notoriety, and writing a book, called “Nun Shall Pass,” Sister is called a narcissist and is excommunicated from the Church.
Now, in Litchfield, Sister goes overboard once again when Soso (Kimiko Glenn) starts a group to protest the prison conditions and the way the...

One of the biggest shows (not) on TV right now has to be Orange Is the New Black. When the show returned with season 2 on June 6 all anyone could do was discuss the show and try not to spoil the Netflix series for each other. Thanks to the marathon appeal of the show, it’s easy to watch the entire series in one long weekend. But if there’s one complaint about the series — though not a serious one — is its large cast, which includes Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon and Jason Biggs, that are sometimes hard to keep track of. While there are a number of newcomers on the show (Danielle Brooks, Yael Stone), the show boasts a huge roster of talent that has made its mark in Hollywood. From Star Trek: Voyager to Sister Act, these ladies in orange have appeared in just about everything that you loved and watched before,...

Most of the time spent on screen in Orange Is the New Black is in uniform, in orange (or khaki) as the title suggests. Inmates look alike. Guards look alike. There’s little variety. Why, then, would the show need a costume designer?
It’s a question that Jennifer Rogien, costume designer of the Netflix hit, often faces. She sees merit in the query, telling Entertainment Weekly how seemingly ridiculous her position could be construed on a very simplistic level. But, within this community of orange, Rogien says, “There is a whole world of tiny details to worry about.”

I’m really looking forward to being reincarcerated at Litchfield State Penitentiary when Netflix’s hit prison dramedy Orange Is The New Black returns for its 13-episode second season this June. The show made We Got This Covered’s list of the top 10 TV shows of 2013, and there’s no reason to think that showrunner Jenji Kohan won’t deliver the goods yet again in Orange Is The New Black‘s sophomore year.
Today, Netflix revealed the first full trailer for season two of Orange Is The New Black, and suffice to say that fans of the show may go through the roof with excitement. There’s a ton going on, from protagonist Piper’s (Taylor Schilling) imprisonment to new arrival Vee (Lorraine Toussaint), and the preview crackles with the same pent-up energy that made the first season such propulsive viewing. Check it out below:

It was all things "Orange Is the New Black" at The Dolby Theatre on Friday (March 14) as night two of Paleyfest 2014 feted the hit Netflix series. With a staggering 12 cast members on stage, as well as creator Jenji Kohan, the event revealed a cast that couldn't be having more fun with one another and an audience that couldn't be having more fun watching.
With that many people on stage, it proved hard at times for some to get a word in (poor Michael Harney, who plays the beleaguered Healy, barely spoke once), but the panel was full of hilarity and moments of enlightenment on Season 1, as well as a few teases about the highly-anticipated upcoming second season.
Fan reaction went from 0 to 60 overnight
When asked what life was like once Season 1 was released in 2013, the cast was unanimous on the fact that recognition on the street happened almost immediately. "They've assaulted us!

One day recently, Bryan Batt decided to keep track of the number of people who stopped him to commiserate about the disappearance of his character, Salvatore Romano, from AMC's Emmy-winning "Mad Men." Batt quit counting at 30. "Some days it's really heartwarming, and sometimes you really want to make it go away," he says. "I'm doing other things, and then I'm reminded that Sal's been fired."The proud gay actor's closet-entrenched character was eliminated (at least temporarily) from the 1960s-set hit series in the third season—ironically, after art director Romano resisted the advances of a male client at the Sterling Cooper ad agency. "So many people identify with the character, including a lot of straight women," says Batt. "They really empathize with Sal's plight. I don't know what it is."In any case, Batt has been busy in the last year, and he credits "Mad Men" with having opened doors for him,...
