- A 'Cheeky cockney' character actor who graced British screens for more than 60 years following his film debut in 1942. He was awarded the MBE in 1970.
- Worked his way up from newspaper boy, earning eight shillings a week, to an acting job at Elstree Studios where he made five pounds a day.
- Served in the RAF during World War II.
- Although his role as British messenger William Potter in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) is small, the quote by Peter O'Toole's character "The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts" is legendary. It was even used by Michael Fassbender's character in Prometheus (2012) (after the scene is shown).
