The demise of disco was greatly accelerated by the cultural impact of the infamous Disco Demolition Night of 1979 in Chicago’s Comiskey Park. While rockers have used the word in a pejorative sense for years, DJs, artists, impresarios, and aficionados know that disco—both the genre and the subculture—not only has deep roots but has lived on under various aliases, inspiring the evolution of music and keeping people moving in various funky ways. Le freak, c’est toujours chic!
These are the ideas, plot points and storylines that Toronto filmmakers Omar Majeed (“Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam”) and Peter Mishara explore in their documentary feature “Disco’s Revenge,” which had its world premiere Thursday in Hot Docs’ Pop/Life strand.
The film, which screens again Friday, is set for release this year. Elevation Pictures will distribute it in Canada; Republic Pictures has acquired rights outside of Canada.

Executive producer Ryan Murphy takes Andy Warhol enthusiasts and neophytes alike into a melancholy immersion of the man’s life and work — using his own words and voice reconstructed with artificial intelligence — in “The Andy Warhol Diaries.” Directed by Andrew Rossi (“Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times” and “The First Monday in May”), the six-part documentary series debuts March 9. Watch the official trailer below.
While Warhol was seemingly scrupulous about keeping his private life private — often flippantly telling journalists he was “asexual” — there’s plenty beneath the surface of his groundbreaking 20th-century art to suggest otherwise. That’s one of the achievements of “The Andy Warhol Diaries,” which melds talking-head testimonies from those who knew him with impressionistic montages of his work and archival snippets from his New York scene at the Factory. Synopsis: The streets of N.Y. might be temporarily silent, but in downtown Manhattan in the early 90’s, they were the site of a dynamic collision between two vibrant subcultures: skateboarding and hip hop. Jeremy Elkin’s documentary, All The Streets Are Silent, narrated by Eli Morgan Gesner, brings to life the magic of this time period and the convergence that created an urban style and visual language that would have an outsized and lasting cultural effect. If Paris Is Burning and Kids had a baby, you’d have this documentary love letter to New York—examining race, society, fashion and street culture—and full of archival footage featuring legendary characters and figures from the downtown scene. Featuring Rosario Dawson, Harold Hunter, Justin Pierce, Keith Hufnagel, Darryl McDaniels (Run-d.M.C.), Jefferson Pang, Bobbito Garcia, Stretch Armstrong, Kool Keith, Leo Fitzpatrick, Mike Hernandez, DJ Clark Kent, Kid Capri, Mike Carroll,...

Exclusive: All the Streets Are Silent, a documentary portrait of the skateboarding and hip-hop scenes in New York in the late 1980s and early ’90s, has been acquired by Greenwich Entertainment.
The U.S. rights deal precedes the film’s world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June. The film will be released in theaters on July 23.
Jeremy Elkin is making his feature directing debut with All the Streets Are Silent, which is described as “a love letter to New York” blending elements of Paris Is Burning and Larry Clark’s Kids.
Between the city’s rebound from near-ruin in the 1970s and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Lower Manhattan was home to the thriving subcultures of skateboarding and hip-hop. Their convergence would give rise to modern street style. Eli Gesner, founder of skateboard gear and fashion brand Zoo York, will narrate the film. Hip-hop producer Large Professor, known...

Rise Up New York! Telethon Raises Over $115 Million To Support New Yorkers Most Impacted By Covid-19
Robin Hood, New York’s largest poverty-fighting organization, and iHeartMedia joined together tonight to air a citywide “virtual telethon” to raise awareness and funds to help New Yorkers whose lives have been dramatically impacted by Covid-19.
Billy Joel at Rise Up New York!
Hosted by Tina Fey, “Rise Up New York!” brought together bighearted New Yorkers with one common goal: to raise funds for Robin Hood’s relief and recovery efforts to help fellow New Yorkers rebuild their lives as the city moves towards recovery and beyond. One hundred percent of donations raised are deployed directly to the organizations on the frontlines who are providing support for food, shelter, cash assistance, health and mental health, legal services, education and more. To date, Robin Hood has raised over $115 million toward relief and recovery efforts since the onset of the pandemic in New York City. In addition to tonight’s telethon, over...

On Monday night, Billy Joel was one of the few faces lingering in the otherwise largely deserted Times Square. His face appeared high in the sky, beamed onto 12 giant digital billboards in the famously chaotic midtown Manhattan neighborhood. It simultaneously beamed into TVs and internet livestreams as part of the Rise Up New York! Covid-19 benefit telethon, which Joel brought to a close with his 1976 New York City anthem, “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway).” A few blocks away, the lights of the Empire State Building sparkled in time with his piano.

In the three decades since he died, at 27, of a heroin overdose, Jean-Michel Basquiat has come to be thought of in timeless terms. With every passing year, his paintings only rise in acclaim, in price, in the essential perception of where he stands in the pantheon of 20th century art. But it wasn’t always that way. In his time, Basquiat was a celebrated but intensely controversial figure. There are still those who look at Basquiat’s art and don’t see the totemic poetry of it; they see words and blotches and scrawls. Yet if you’re a Basquiat believer, as I am, what’s extraordinary about his work is that it is composed of words and blotches and scrawls — but when you look at the paintings, they’re alive. They pulsate.
There are other painters whose work has this dimension (Jackson Pollock springs to mind), but in Basquiat...

To most people, the name Charlie Ahearn doesn’t ring a bell. A relatively unsung filmmaker born and bred in New York City, Ahearn has only four directing credits to his name, spread out over a nearly 40 year career as director. However, few directors are as important to popular culture and particularly the spread of hip-hop culture as this bewilderingly influential filmmaker and cultural artist.
With the groundbreaking Wild Style, Ahearn would make what has become known as cinema’s first true hip-hop film. With names like Fab Five Freddy, Rock Steady crew and Grandmaster Flash as part of the cast, the film would mainly focus on a graffiti artist named Zoro, as he makes his way through the urban landscape that sparked the early moments of hip-hop culture. With that culture now becoming arguably the driving force in mainstream popular culture, Ahearn is a truly influential force. And thankfully,...

Street-style photography seems almost pedestrian now, with blogs like The Sartorialist, Humans of New York or (my favorite) What Ali Wore popping up every day, but this wasn't the case when photographer Jamel Shabazz started snapping pics in the '70s. A friend of the artist says he was "capturing life in its purest form."
Shabazz depicted the history of his NYC borough, documenting the early days of hip-hop culture, the fashion and lifestyle he saw day-to-day in the subway or walking the streets of Brooklyn.
Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer (2013) delves into the photographer's influential work and follows some of his current-day activities. Director Charlie Ahearn's previous work includes 1983's Wild Style, a hip hop docudrama. In this film, Ahearn includes interviews with cultural figures such as Fab 5 Freddy and Krs-One among others.
Austin Film Society will show the Shabazz documentary this Sunday, Jan. 12 at 4pm [tickets] at Afs at the Marchesa.

VH1 has marked a February 2014 premiere for its latest “rock doc,” although it’s rap and not rock music that’s at the center of this 4-part documentary. The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop, based on Steve Stoute’s bestseller The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created A Culture That Rewrote The Rules Of The New Economy, takes a trip down memory lane to examine how hip-hop culture influenced music, film, television, fashion, business, race relations and the politics that opened the door for Obama’s America. “Tanning” in this case is a phrase coined by Stoute for the deep-rooted influence traditionally African-American hip-hop has had on pop culture from The Jeffersons to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, to Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing to Eminem’s 8 Mile. Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys, 30 for 30‘s Broke and The U) directed the docu with Alfred Spellman producing,...

A new genre of hip-hop pushed its way to the forefront of mainstream culture 25 years ago on Aug. 8, 1988, when N.W.A.'s influential debut album "Straight Outta Compton" hit stores. Boasting socially charged lyrics laced with profanity and aggression, "Compton" is often considered the grandfather of gangsta-rap albums. We're taking a quick look back at the classic.
"Straight Outta Compton" peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and No. 9 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart. It has since been certified triple platinum.
Mc Ren, Eazy-e and Dr. Dre are seen here with Fab 5 Freddy. Ice Cube left N.W.A. the year after "Compton" was released, citing royalty disputes. DJ Yella remained a member until the group disbanded in 1991.

On July 10, Jay Z decided to brand himself as not just a rapper, but a performance artist with an installation at New York's Pace Gallery. What is his take on modern art? Rapping his song "Picasso Baby" for six hours in front of a crowd of dancing fans.
A 10-minute short film made at the event, aptly titled "Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film," debuted Friday (August 2) on HBO and was then put online. The video shows appearances by a number of celebrities who were attending the event, from actors Alan Cumming and Taraji P. Henson, to director Judd Apatow and members of the "Girls" cast. Rosie Perez and Fab Five Freddy also show up.
Itwas a unique experience for Jay and his fans, all of whom look like they are having a great time. It's also a more interesting watch than a run of the mill music video.

Last night as I was watching Bill Maher’s last episode of Real Time before the summer break, Jay Z premiered the performance art film for his Magna Carta Holy Grail song, Picasso Baby right afterwards.
Hova flipped the script and rather than do another boring rented Bentley, ass cheek, bottle poppin’ club medium shot, generic hop hop music video, he instead rocked the arthouse crowd and dropped a ten minute performance art film directed by Mark Romanek.
The film captures Jay Z performing Picasso Baby at NYC’s Pace Gallery, which took place in July. Jay Z invited a crowd of art world residents, regular celebrities, and cool kid civilians to stop through for an intimate show where he performed the song six straight hours while artists and fans observed and joined him. This video is how we do it in New York. The secret to a hot party is ten percent of everything.

Here’s Mark Romanek’s first music video in a decade or so, a capturing of Jay Z’s recent performance art event at Pace Gallery, where he performed the single “Picasso Baby” for six hours straight. Shot by 25 New Face Jody Lee Lipes (Martha Marcy May Marlene), it features an all-star cast of participatory spectators, including, first and foremost, artist Marina Abramovic, whose own The Artist is Present performance it was clearly inspired by. Others include Judd Apatow, Adam Driver, Jim Jarmusch, Marilyn Minter, Rose Lee Goldberg, Fab Five Freddy, Rosie Perez (dancing!), George Condo, Jemima Kirke, Alan Cumming and Radical […]...

On Friday night, HBO released Jay Z's "Picasso Baby" video, which was famously filmed while Hova performed the song for six straight hours for a crowd of art world residents, regular celebrities, and cool-looking civilians at Chelsea's Pace Gallery last month. Among the more recognizable names and faces in the final cut are Marina Abramović, Judd Apatow, Marilyn Minter, George Condo, Alan Cumming, Fab Five Freddy, Jim Jarmusch, Jemima Kirke, Jenna Lyons, Glenn O'Brien, Rosie Pérez, Cynthia Rowley, Wale, Michael K. Williams, Adam Driver, Dustin Yellin, actual Picasso baby Diana Widmaier Picasso, and our own Jerry Saltz. Everyone seemed to have a decent — if occasionally awkward — time, but the most interesting part of the 8-minute production is probably listening to the voiceover of Jay comparing concerts and performance art, and watching Abramović's genuine enthusiasm for the project throughout.

In a world a long, long ago, there was Wild Style, the film that can be legitimately called the first hip-hop film ever made. The low budget musical docu-drama film, which revolves around the life of a New York City graffiti artist, played by real life graffiti artist Lee Quinones, as he deals with his life, his work and his relationship with a fellow artist Rose (Sandra Fabara), and featuring performances by Grandmaster Flash, Fab Five Freddy, Rock Steady Crew and Cold Crush Brothers, can rightly claim to be one of the very few films ever made that had a ground breaking cultural impact. The film’s success led to other similar films, such as Style Wars and Michael Schultz’s Krush...

"I can honestly say tonight represents something bigger than a Grammy... bigger than selling millions of records... bigger than my wildest musical dreams," said rapper-turned-Renaissance man Swizz Beatz (born Kasseem Dean) in his keynote address at a celebratory dinner for Harlem Hospital's new Mural Pavilion Thursday night.
"When I go home tonight, I'm going to write in my journal... today's date, because it marks history," Dean went on to say, officially accepting his role as the first Global Ambassador for New York City’s public hospitals system.
The evening's festivities not only marked the unveiling of the hospital's new $325 million wing -- which features a gallery of original paintings created under President Roosevelt's Harlem Renaissance-era Works Progress Administration -- but a commemoration of the near-fatal stabbing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. almost 54 years to the day.

"Reincarnated" -- directed by Vice magazine editor and first-time feature documentary filmmaker Andy Capper -- tells the true story of Snoop Dogg's divinely inspired trip to Jamaica and the effect that it had on the man he has become today. It world premieres tonight in Toronto. Capper, a long-time fan of Snoop's work, sought muse in Dr. Dre and Fab Five Freddy's "Murder Was the Case," a 1994 short film that starred Snoop Dogg, among other documentaries -- such as Leon Gast's 1996 documentary, "When We Were Kings," and Jonas Mekas and Andrew Solt's Lennon-inspired "Gimme Some Truth". "Reincarnated" is meant to chart the artist's journey from dark to light: Snoop's evolution from a 'Dogg' to a 'Lion,' and the creation of a new record. What the movie is really about: "Snoop's life story set against a real, personal transformation and an examination of...

At the dawn of the Black Hollywood Renaissance of the '90s, the sodality of filmmakers like Spike Lee, F. Gary Gray, The Hudlin Brothers, Bill Duke, Stan Lathan, John Singleton, The Hughes Brothers, George Jackson, Doug McHenry, Mario Van Peebles, Robert Townsend, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Kevin Hooks, Fred "Fab Five Freddy" Braithwaite, Charles Stone III, Nelson George and this writer, to name a few, felt like the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. We - like Rossetti, Millais, and Hunt at the height of their artistic revolt in the U.K. during the late 1800s - were cinematic reformers, rejecting the cartoonish mythos of African American life, as depicted in the Black...

Essential Info: Chances are you won't hear any tracks from Mickey Factz's Mickey Mause mixtape burning up radio, but that doesn't make it any less poignant. Lupe Fiasco dubbed it a "#MasterPiece" on Twitter and even Swizz Beatz gave it a push, sending out the link over the social networking site.
The highly conceptualized tape, which samples from producers Danger Mouse and deadmau5, finds the Bronx Mc in character. He isn't Mickey Factz, but instead Mickey Mause, a 1980s graffiti artist who strives to make a name for himself among the greats like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and Fab Five Freddy.

While always a city bursting with creative and artistic talent, there was probably no time more fertile in New York City than than '70s and '80s. Avant-garde art, hip hop, punk, no-wave, disco and more all clashed and mingled, leaving a lasting impression on pop culture, politics and the city itself. Among that noise and ruckus, independent filmmakers were also making a big wave, capturing New York's vibrancy in stories that inspired a new generation of directors. And that time has been captured in the documentary "Blank City."
Directed by Celine Danhier, the film explores the artists of the "No Wave Cinema" and "Cinema of Transgression" movements who shattered existing notions of Diy and underground art, and paved the way for today's independent film scene. Through interviews with Steve Buscemi, Debbie Harry, Jim Jarmusch, Fab 5 Freddy and John Waters and many more, the film presents a revealing...

Last week, "I Do," a tongue-in-cheek love song featuring Jay-z and Andre 3000, hit the Net to rave reviews. You already know that this clip is the best based on that factual title, but just to be hilariously 90sly clear, here’s a video of Yo! MTV Raps co-host and internet historian Fab 5 Freddy explaining “e-mail” to MTV viewers in 1994. It is full of golden 90s-internet/90s-rap combo quotes such as “Let’s like share this information electronically, y’all, we gon’ put some funk in cyberspace.” Remember when computers played that exact sentence as their startup noise? “Yo, stay with it baby cause it’s definitely the way of the future.” What can we say? He was completely right: 90s internet jokes are the new 20s olde timey jokes, in that they are just never not the greatest. I think we can all agree, this video and MTV’s impending 30th Anniversary Weekend programming is more than enough reason to bust out the ol’ 1994 Party Banner: (via...
