Miller’s Girl caused a certain level of controversy upon its release due to the age gap between its lead stars Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega. However, this notoriety has pushed the movie into the commercial realm, drawing in increased viewership. The story focuses on a forbidden love story between a teacher and his student as they form a bond when working on a creative writing assignment. Miller’s Girl explores these complex themes of forbidden love and the blurred lines of morality in a manner that fuses in and out of comedy and drama, leading to a more thrilling climax in

Updated with complete winners list: Despite being up for four acting category awards, The Crown‘s final season left the BAFTA TV Awards empty handed tonight in London.
Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Salim Daw and Dominic West were all snubbed, as the the likes of Matthew Macfadyen, Jasmine Jobson, Timothy Spall and Sarah Lancashire all triumphed and the Netflix show went out quietly.
There was also a major surprise in the International category, where little-known French drama Class Act beat the likes of Beef, The Bear and The Last of Us to win the prize. Among the most shocked was the show’s star Laurent Lafitte, who urged the audience to find and watch his show — to the amusement of the audience.

There have been repeated talks of a revival of the American version of The Office revival in the years since it concluded. Given the success of the show, it seemed to be a question not of if, but when. We now have the answer.
Greg Daniels, who developed the American remake and served as showrunner for the majority of its nine seasons, has co-created a sequel series with Michael Konan.
Described as being “set in the same universe” as The Office, the description, via Deadline, reads as follows:

Last year’s Miller’s Girl remains one of the most controversial movies of the year, but the controversy surrounding the movie and its content did not help it become a hit. The movie received mixed reviews and was a proper box office bomb despite a relatively small budget ($4 million), failing to earn even $1 million internationally. The movie stars Martin Freeman as a 50-something literature professor, Jonathan Albert Miller, who works in Tennessee and suddenly receives the 18-year-old Cairo Sweet, played by Jenna Ortega, as a new student.
The girl is special, intelligent, and talented, but is also seductive and presents a danger for Miller, who will break all boundaries to be with the girl, possibly ruining his career and his life as well. The movie had an interesting premise, but it seems that the fans did not appreciate it that much.

‘If you didn’t laugh, you’d cry’ isn’t just the correct British response to any exasperating situation, it must also be Tony Schumacher’s screenwriting mantra. His crime drama The Responder would be unwatchably bleak if it wasn’t also so bloody funny.
Series one put response officer Chris Carson (Martin Freeman) through the wringer so thoroughly that it was a wonder he survived. His childhood pal Carl, a small-time drug dealer who’d been paying him for police intel, didn’t, and in a characteristically heroic/risky attempt to help Carl’s widow, Chris gave her the rucksack of stolen cocaine that had kicked off all this mess. Now it’s six months later and guess what? Chris’ problems are far from over.

I have some sad news to report today. Actor Bernard Hill passed away at the age of 79. His death was confirmed by his agent, Lou Coulson.
Hill is known for playing Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s Titanic and notably for playing Theoden King of Rohan in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. He also played Luther Plunkitt in Clint Eastwood’s True Crime.
He played many other roles, including Yosser Hughes in the BBC show Boys from the Blackstuff. Hill was due to return to TV on the second series of The Responder with Martin Freeman on BBC.
According to the BBC, Hill was supposed to appear at Comic Con Liverpool on Saturday but was canceled.

Bernard Hill, the actor whose memorable tones and rugged visage brought to life a variety of fantastic performances, has died. He was 79.
Born in Manchester in 1944, Hill quickly gravitated towards stage work before taking the chance to make the jump to film and TV. Yet his early career was marked by few standout roles, mostly relegated to brief appearances on the likes of I, Claudius and the BBC's Tom Stoppard adaptation Professional Foul.
Still, he found one of the first parts that would define his career in Alan Bleasdale's The Black Stuff, a one-off TV play in 1980 that the writer would expand into classic comedy drama Boys From The Blackstuff. Hill scored a BAFTA nomination for his performance as the tragic, yet dimly self-aware Yosser.
Other TV work included Dennis Potter adaptation Lipstick On Your Collar, a huge swathe of Shakespeare adaptations including Wolf Hall, disability drama Skallagrigg,...

At the start of The Responder’s first series, written by ex-police officer Tony Schumacher, the cracks were already showing in Martin Freeman’s police officer Chris Carson. He was depressed, angry, and having panic attacks.
A former inspector who’d been demoted to response policing when his squad came under suspicion of corruption, Chris had spent the last three years working night patrols in Liverpool city centre. He was unpopular at work and considered a loose cannon best left alone. His shift pattern meant that he barely saw his wife Kate (MyAnna Buring) and their young daughter Tilly. His wages couldn’t cover the fees at the care home for his dementia-suffering mother (Rita Tushingham). He wanted to be a good bobby, but under-funded public services made him at best, a sticking plaster on the desperate needs of his drug-flooded and impoverished community.

Miller's Girl, a 2024 drama featuring Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman, may not be based on a book, but it pulls its influences from elsewhere.
Written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, Miller's Girl initially came to theaters in January 2024, but it sprung back in conversation with its April 26 debut on Netflix in the U.S.
The drama follows the relationship between a student and teacher which gets dangerously predatorial. The film has caused plenty of uproar in the wake of its release, with some audiences taking issue with the connection between Freeman's educator and Ortega's teenage pupil.

Actor Martin Freeman is known for his work on shows such as Sherlock and the first season of Fargo. He is also known for playing Everett K. Ross in the MCU, making appearances in Black Panther and Captain America: Civil War, and also playing the role of Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy.
Freeman recently came under fire for his latest film Miller’s Girl which sees him play a creative writing teacher who has an affair with his eighteen-year-old student played by Jenna Ortega. Many criticized the age gap between the actors and the intimate scenes present in the film. Freeman defended the film by invoking Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List.

Martin Freeman is speaking out to defend his movie Miller’s Girl amid backlash for the age gap between him and on-screen love interest Jenna Ortega.
The movie follows a talented young writer (Ortega) who embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.
The characters, an 18-year-old student and a 49-year-old teacher, have a 31-year age gap. The actors also have the same age gap in real life.
Viewers have expressed outraged at an intimate scene between the actors, but they did work with an intimacy coordinator to make sure everyone was comfortable on set.
Now, Martin is speaking in response to the backlash.

Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega briefly found themselves subjected to some online backlash in January when they co-starred in “Miller’s Girl,” Jade Halley Bartlett’s film about an 18-year-old student who develops a crush on her 49-year-old English teacher and enters a romantic relationship with him. But while some fans were offended by the film’s content and the reality that the two actors had to film intimate scenes despite a 31 year age gap between them — a controversy that has been stoked by the film’s resurgence on Netflix — Freeman stands by his involvement in the film.
In a recent interview with The Times of London, Freeman lamented the fact that the film has been the subject of online ire. The British actor called it “a shame” that the film, which he described as “grown-up and nuanced,” was being interpreted as scandalous. He went on to draw a distinction between...

Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega star in Miller’s Girl, an erotic thriller which recently began streaming on Netflix. Given the subject matter of Miller’s Girl, in which a high-school teacher has an inappropriate relationship with one of his students, there has been a fair share of backlash, with many focusing on the age gap between Freeman and Ortega.
While speaking with The Times of London, Martin Freeman, who is 31 years older than Ortega, defended Miller’s Girl from the backlash. The actor said the film is “grown-up and nuanced” when it comes to dealing with the age gap relationship, adding, “It’s not saying, ‘Isn’t this great?’” Stories dealing with difficult subject matter can invite backlash, which Freeman said is a shame. “Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?” Freeman added.

Martin Freeman defends his new film, Miller’s Girl, from the criticism it has received for the age gap between him and his co-star, Jenna Ortega.
The erotic thriller, written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, depicts an affair between a student and a teacher. In real life, Freeman is 52 years old, while the Wednesday star is 21.
In a new interview with The Sunday Times, the Office UK alum said the film is “grown-up and nuanced,” adding that the film is not saying, “Isn’t this great.”
“And that’s a shame,” Freeman noted, about the stories about difficult subjects that can be tainted by association before referencing Schindler’s List, saying, “Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?”

“I am 18 and entirely unremarkable,” Jenna Ortega says at the beginning of Miller’s Girl, the feature debut of writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett. But not for long. In the psychological thriller co-starring Martin Freeman, a student-teacher relationship turns into a dangerous liaison when a lonely teen’s writing assignment sparks intimacy with a much older man.
“No one is a perfect villain or a perfect victim. They don’t exist,” Bartlett told Forbes about the film’s controversial subject matter. “These characters are quite nebulous and gray, which I think is closer to real-life people.”

Home viewing charts inspire deja vu: “Anyone but You,” a hit as a PVOD release, just debuted at Netflix. It knocked out Netflix’s expensive “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” from first place after two weeks, falling to #6.
Similarly, “Dune: Part Two” returned for its second week as #1 at both iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (which calculates by revenue).
The “Dune” sequel fended off challenges by two recent theatrical releases. Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man” (Universal), once intended as a Netflix original, is #2 at iTunes, third at Fandango. The family-oriented “Arthur the King” (Lionsgate) took second at Fandango, but only #6 at iTunes. Both initially are available to rent for 48 hours for $19.99.
Two new home-play debuts also made top 10 lists. “Cash Out” (Saban) is #9 at iTunes, renting at $6.99; starring John Travolta, the critically reviled title may be getting as much attention for its little-known director Ives. That’s...

Miller's Girl brought plenty of twists and turns to the big screen in 2024 as audiences dissected the meaning of the film.
Released in the United States on January 26, Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega portray a teacher/student pairing who get into a dangerous relationship following a creative writing assignment.
On top of outside controversy surrounding Freeman, Miller's Girl stirred up discussions amongst fans due to the nature of this relationship being potentially romanticized in the current era of film.

Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega are two examples of brilliant actors from different generations. With Freeman having established himself a few decades ago and Ortega already having a strong presence despite her young age, it’s fun to compare their careers and creative approaches — but viewers found it far less fun to compare their ages when watching the two having an on-screen intimate relationship.
Freeman Speaks Up Against Public Backlash
The audience largely found Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega’s latest collaboration, The Miller’s Girl, quite disturbing. In the movie, the two actors play an English teacher and his young student who indulge in their near-forbidden relationship, and some viewers lashed at the movie for “romanticizing” relationships between minors and those they’re dependent on.
Freeman strongly disagrees with the sentiment.
The actor recently sat down with The Times and addressed the public backlash against The Miller’s Girl.

Martin Freeman recently spoke to The Times of London about the backlash that erupted over his movie “Miller’s Girl” earlier this year. The erotic thriller opened in theaters in January and caused a stir on social media due to intimate scenes between Freeman and his co-star Jenna Ortega. The movie casts the “Wednesday” favorite as an 18-year-old student who is attracted to her writing teacher (Freeman) and attempts to start an affair with him. Freeman is 31 years older than Ortega.
While some viewers were disturbed by the age gap between the actors and how the film required them to shoot some intimate moments together, Freeman stressed to The Times that “Miller’s Girl” is “grown-up and nuanced.” He also argued that just because the film shows the makings of a potential affair starting between characters who are 31 years apart doesn’t mean it is condoning such behavior.

Jenna Ortega's evolution from Disney princess to scream queen is about more than just a shift in the types of roles she plays. At some point during her transition from family-friendly TV to darker film roles, the actor has become a global star. Having gained widespread recognition for playing Wednesday Adams in Neftlix's "Wednesday," the now 21-year-old is set to star in the upcoming "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," where her character will fittingly represent a new generation of goth icons as the daughter of Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz. In other words, Ortega has come a long way since her Disney Channel days. However, she hasn't quite come far enough for some, at least in terms of age.
In January 2024, "Miller's Girl" debuted in theaters. Ortega starred alongside Martin Freeman in this $4 million dollar erotic thriller, which unfortunately made just $890,000 in theaters. Critics weren't too impressed with "Miller's Girl," either, making...

Out in front is “Fargo” star and former drama lead winner Jon Hamm, who could also pick up dual supporting bids this year for the comedy and drama series “Good Omens” and “The Morning Show.”
Hamm would be the first actor to win this award for “Fargo,” following the unsuccessful bids of inaugural season cast members Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton and third season lead Ewan McGregor. As the star of “A Gentleman in Moscow,” McGregor happens to be seeking a second win in this category after being honored for “Halston” in 2021.

Produced by Fremantle’s Dancing Ledge Productions, it’s set to debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on May 5 and will be available on BritBox this summer. Fremantle is handling global distribution. It has also released a trailer.
Written by Tony Schumacher, it will see its conflicted protagonist, police officer Chris, “trying to find his way out of the woods.”
“I am abusing this metaphor, but it’s an evolution. He thinks his life is going to be O.K.,” Schumacher told Variety.
“He has decided to take matters into his own hands,” added Freeman, as Chris finally – and reluctantly – tries therapy.
“He goes: ‘I am going to give it a go, maybe I will learn something.’ It’s about putting yourself in a situation where you can actually get some help. He is...

Jenna Ortega is undoubtedly one of Hollywood's most talented rising stars. The actress was involved in some pretty big projects as a child, then gained recognition for her performance as young Jane in Jane the Virgin, for her starring role in Disney's Stuck in the Middle and her participation in Netflix's You. Now we know Ortega as the new Scream Queen, the new Wednesday, and a great dramatic actress with a lot of interesting movies coming up in the next few years.
However, Jenna Ortega's latest feature film role is not her most successful to say the least. And it's not even about the actress' performance, she doesn't deserve such a badly written character and script.
We are talking about the erotic thriller Miller's Girl, in which Ortega starred alongside none other than Martin Freeman. Unfortunately, the movie was panned by critics and audiences alike and flopped at the box office.

Martin Freeman returns for The Responder series 2, which is heading to the BBC in early May: here’s the trailer for the show.
The first series of psychological drama The Responder held a mirror up to the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing. Written by former Merseyside police officer Tony Schumacher, the show was equal parts a thrilling police procedural and intense character study, with a tour de force performance by Martin Freeman at the centre. It was one of the biggest dramas of 2022, winning Freeman an International Emmy for Best Actor and several BAFTA nominations. Half of the first series was directed by Philip Barantini, who went on to direct the brilliant Boiling Point.

There are very few comic book writers who have attained the status of ‘legendary’. Comic book enthusiasts unanimously agree one of them is Alan Moore, who took DC comics to its heights during the 80s and 90s. He revived a number of forgotten supernatural characters, especially through his run with Swamp Thing, such as Spectre, the Demon, the Phantom Stranger, Deadman, and introduced John Constantine.

Exclusive: Gina Lyons, a producer on the pilot of Dreaming Whilst Black and Amazon Freevee’s upcoming Dinner with the Parents, has launched a comedy indie to amplify working class, female voices.
Gobby Girl Productions recently closed finance on a £1.3M ($1.6M) British feature film starring big talent that will roll cameras in June. The company is also nearing greenlight on two shows for UK broadcasters.
Lyons has been a freelance producer for several years and launched the outfit as a vehicle for her shows after seeing the inequality faced by working-class women in the industry. The indie’s website points to recent research which found that 40% of Brits nominated for key awards at the Oscars, BAFTAs and Mercury prize over the past decade went to private school, while only 6% of the British population are privately educated.

Gobby Girl will therefore focus on amplifying these voices and has already got the ball rolling.

SAG-AFTRA is making sure consent over the filming of intimate scenes extends even after the actors leave the set.
The Guild issued new Standards and Protocols guidelines for intimacy coordinators when discussing their on-set work with actors. Intimacy coordinators must now seek the permission of an actor to publicly share details of their intimate scenes. Failure to do so could mean the intimacy coordinator will be removed from the SAG-AFTRA registry of certified intimacy coordinators following an investigation.
“Intimacy coordinators are a crucial resource on any set to ensure the protection of our members working in intimate scenes,” a SAG-AFTRA spokesperson told Deadline. “Members have to feel safe, comfortable and confident in engaging with intimacy coordinators.”
The updated SAG-AFTRA guidelines per the S&P protocols read: “Intimacy coordinators should maintain the confidentiality of an actor’s work and experience in performing highly sensitive scenes unless they have the actor...
