Exclusive: Jane Featherstone and Liz Murdoch’s Sister saw revenues skyrocket by $100M last year, although the This is Going to Hurt and Chernobyl producer failed again to turn a profit.
The transatlantic outfit’s turnover grew by a mammoth 273% to $134M for full-year 2022, according to a Companies House filing seen by Deadline, as the outfit shook off the shackles of the Covid-19 pandemic and delivered a number of high-profile projects. The vast majority of the revenue came from TV shows.
Sister’s filing pointed to “the realisation of a pipeline of projects and recovery from the delays to the production schedule of programmes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic” as a driver of revenue growth. Big shows delivered in the year included BAFTA-winning BBC drama This is Going to Hurt, The Split Season 3 and HBO/Sky’s The Baby.

To anyone in their 20s, Michael Anderson's 1976 sci-fi film "Logan's Run" remains a pop culture fulcrum of anxiety. Based on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, "Logan's Run" is set in the distant future of 2274 where the human population has been gathered in high-tech, dome-enclosed living facilities where their every wish is granted by an elaborate computer system. Everyone is young and attractive, and sex partners of any gender identity can be dialed up on a local roulette system.

Netflix has said it will clock more than 30 Spanish-language projects across film, series, and non-fiction documentaries by the year’s end. The news was unveiled by Verónica Fernández, Director of Series for Spain and Portugal at an event to mark the expansion of the streamer’s production hub in Tres Cantos, Madrid.
Netflix has been available in Spain since 2015. The streamer’s Tres Cantos campus opened in 2019 and has since doubled its stage capacity and now features ten sets and a multi-purpose space that includes the company’s first in-house post-production facility.
Fernández said the new facilities “guarantee” that creatives in Spain will have the “means to continue to tell their stories.”
“No one thought we would have so much ongoing production and Spanish content,” she said at a Q&a session during the opening event. “We are 500 million Spanish speakers, but this content has gone beyond.”

Richard Fleischer’s Biblical epic is a class act all the way, and one of producer Dino De Laurentiis’s greatest accomplishments. Anthony Quinn’s guilty, perplexed bandit survives and subsists but never understands the importance of the man crucified in his place; the view of early Christianity is respectful and free of pious clichés. It’s an excellent image of the ancient world, with gladiator scenes that are possibly the best ever. Fleisher does exceedingly well with the enormous sets and a well-chosen international cast: Ernest Borgnine, Valentina Cortese, Vittorio Gassman, Katy Jurado, Arthur Kennedy, Silvana Mangano, Jack Palance.

Exclusive: Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic World Dominion) has been tapped as one of the leads, vengeful god Zeus, in Netflix’s darkly comedic Greek mythology reimagining series Kaos, from creator-writer Charlie Covell. Exclusive: Hugh Grant (The Undoing), Janet McTeer (Ozark), Cliff Curtis (Avatar: The Way of Water), David Thewlis (Fargo), Killian Scott (Dublin Murders), Misia Butler (The School for Good and Evil), Leila Farzad (I Hate Suzie), Nabhaan Rizwan (Station Eleven), Rakie Ayola (The Pact) and Stanley Townsend (The Current War) have signed on for series regular roles alongside Aurora Perrineau in Charlie Covell’s mythological epic Kaos for Netflix, which will go into production later this summer.
The series is billed as a bold, darkly comic, contemporary take on Greek mythology, exploring love, power and life in the underworld. Nothing is sacred in Covell’s bold reinvention of Greek myths (think tracksuits not togas), except the treachery and arrogance of a bunch of inconstant gods and their cosmic machinations…Some things never change. BAFTA-nominated I Hate Suzie star Leila Farzad and Broadchurch’s Andrew Buchan are to lead BBC One’s Better, the latest drama from prolific Chernobyl producer Sister.
Farzad, who was BAFTA-nominated for her role in Billie Piper and Lucy Prebble’s dramedy, will play Di Lou Slack, a quick-witted policewoman whose success lies on a foundation of deceit and corruption.
Buchan, who is also penning Sister drama Passenger for ITV, plays Col McHugh, a charming businessman and property developer who heads a citywide drug trafficking gang.
The show from Humans scribes Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent tells of the pair’s bond set in a world where they have created their own version of “right” and “wrong.”
Farzad called it a “a brilliant fresh take on the morality tale,” adding: “I am excited to have the opportunity to play Lou Slack, the vehicle through which we explore the multivalent layers of good and bad.

Exclusive: Sister, the media co-venture owned by Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider, and Jane Featherstone, has posted a loss of $7.7M in its first 18 months of trading, during which it expanded its investment empire and was hit by the coronavirus production shutdown.
The producer behind Emmy-winning Chernobyl and Amazon’s upcoming series The Power published its inaugural set of earnings at the UK’s Companies House today, providing a first detailed snapshot of the company, which began operating in September 2019 with the $63.8M acquisition of Featherstone’s production house Sister Original.
In the 18 months to the end of December 2020, the group’s revenue stood at $38.4M. While it is not directly comparable, it was below the revenue of £65.2M ($90M) Sister Original posted in 2019, which was when it delivered Chernobyl to Sky and HBO, as well as BBC series Giri/Haji.
Sister said its revenue was “lower than expected” because of the pandemic.

“Chernobyl” producer Sister — the content studio set up by Jane Featherstone, Stacey Snider and Elisabeth Murdoch — has hired former “Black Mirror” producer Lucy Dyke to lead a new production hub out of Manchester, in northern England.
The outfit is called Northern Sister, and will focus on developing and producing high-end scripted projects in the region, while fostering creators from diverse backgrounds both on and off screen. The Manchester location will allow Sister to tap into creative talent in other cities, such as Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool and Bradford.
The company’s expansion up north comes at a time when U.K. broadcasters such as the BBC and Channel 4 are growing their own operations outside of London.
Calling the timing of the BBC’s expansion plans, revealed just last week, “fortuitous,” Dyke tells Variety, “It’s really important that we nurture the next generation of writers and script editors. When I started out,...

Exclusive: Will Sharpe, who starred in Netflix and BBC drama Giri/Haji and directed quirky British comedy Flowers, is taking over directing Olivia Colman drama series Landscapers.
Sharpe replaces Alexander Payne, who was initially set as the director of the HBO and Sky co-production, which is produced by Chernobyl producer Sister. Chernobyl’s awards run continues after picking up the award for best mini-series at the BAFTA TV Awards.
The HBO and Sky co-production drama beat BBC drama The Victim, Channel 4’s The Virtues and ITV’s A Confession to pick up the award.
Jared Harris also won the leading actor award. He beat The Capture’s Callum Turner, The Virtues’ Stephen Graham and Giri/Haji’s Takehiro Hira to the award. Harris joked that BAFTA had “ruined his losing streak” and he shouted out former HBO exec Kary Antholis, who told him that Daniel Day Lewis was the network’s first choice to play the role.
This comes after the disaster drama picked up three Emmys in September, including outstanding limited series as well as seven awards at the Creative Arts Emmys.
The show, which charts the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in 1986, was produced by Jane Featherstone’s Sister Pictures.

“1917” has won the Producers Guild of America’s award as the best-produced feature film of 2019, giving it an important victory at an awards show that usually honors the film that goes on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
The film, an immersive drama about World War I that was fashioned to look like a single shot, triumphed in a field that also included top Academy Award contenders “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” “Parasite” and “Joker.” While the PGA win makes it a de facto frontrunner of sorts in that race, this is a year in which the Oscar race still feels unsettled.
“Apollo 11” won the award for documentary feature, while “Toy Story 4” won for animated feature.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

The Crown’s Olivia Colman is to star in Alexander Payne-directed crime drama Landscapers for HBO and Sky.
Landscapers is produced by Chernobyl producer Sister and is the first television screenplay from Ed Sinclair, Colman’s husband. It is being co-produced by South of the River Pictures, the new production company established by Colman and Sinclair, as revealed by Deadline.
The four-part series is the latest co-production between WarnerMedia’s premium network HBO and Comcast-backed Sky following the success of the nuclear disaster drama Chernobyl, which won ten Emmys in September.
Directed by The Descendants and Sideways director Payne, the series is inspired by real events. It tells the story of killers Susan and Christopher Edwards. Colman will play Susan Edwards. The pair, a mild-mannered couple from Mansfield in the UK, killed Susan’s parents and buried them in their back garden. The crime remained undiscovered for over a decade.

Olivia Colman has found her next role, and it sounds killer.
The Oscar winner, who is currently one season into her two-season run as Queen Elizabeth II on Netflix’s “The Crown,” has signed on to lead a crime drama titled “Landscapers” which has received a series order at HBO and Sky. Fellow Academy Award winner Alexander Payne (“The Descendants”) is set to direct the series which is being written by Ed Sinclair.
Inspired by real events, “Landscapers” explores the lives of convicted killers Susan (Colman) and Christopher Edwards (casting Tbd) and asks how this devoted and mild-mannered couple came to kill Susan’s parents and bury them in the back garden of their Mansfield home in the U.K. Their crime remained undiscovered for over a decade.
Per HBO, the series is based on hours of interviews with the real-life figures behind the crime who have always maintained their innocence.

Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider and Jane Featherstone are joining forces to launch Sister, a global production and development company that will focus on making high-quality television shows, movies, and other forms of entertainment.
The move unites Murdoch, the daughter of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and the founder of Shine Group, with two of the entertainment industry’s leading executives. Snider most recently served as chairman and CEO of Twentieth Century Fox, leaving the company after it was acquired by Disney. She also had stints as the co-chairman and CEO of DreamWorks and as chairman of Universal Pictures. There had been rumors for months that Murdoch and Snider were teaming up on a new content company, but the addition of Featherstone is an unexpected twist.
However, it substantially bolsters the team’s firepower in the area of television given that Snider has spent much of her career making feature films. Featherstone...

Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider and Jane Featherstone have joined forces to form Sister, an ambitious content creation venture designed to develop and produce television and film projects with global appeal. Murdoch, the former Shine Group founder/chairman, will be the lead financier in the venture. She said Snider and Featherstone are co-investors and co-owners.
It is the first job that Snider has taken since leaving as chairman/CEO of Twentieth Century Fox when the acquisition of that studio by Disney was completed in April. The linkup comes after Featherstone, a preeminent producer of sophisticated and limited series like Broadchurch, saw her Chernobyl win 10 Emmy Awards including Outstanding Limited Series.
Murdoch, the daughter of Rupert Murdoch, will be Executive Chairman of Sisters, while Featherstone will be Head of Sister London and Snider will be Global CEO and Head of Sister La. Given their long list of career accomplishments, the principals make...

Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson, Paul Ritter, Jessie Buckley, Adrian Rawlins and Con O’Neill star in “Chernobyl,” which dramatizes the story of the 1986 nuclear accident.
The accident, which took place in April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the abandoned city of Pripyat, Ukraine, occurred following a massive explosion that released radioactive material across Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, reaching as far as Scandinavia and Western Europe. The first teaser trailer is out for HBO's upcoming miniseries Chernobyl, debuting Monday, May 6 at 9/8c.
Focusing solely on the event itself and the dramatic moments that followed, the teaser makes quite an impact.
For those of us of a certain age, the recollection of the Three Mile Island accident still resonates.
There was a partial meltdown of a reactor Number 2 on March 28, 1979. The country was already energy conscious due to the "energy crisis" felt around the world.
In 1973 there was decreased oil output that affected the world due to the Iranian war, and again in 1979, the price of crude doubled its price, sending shockwaves the world over.
