Dropkick Murphys team up with Violent Femmes to fight the Ku Klux Klan on the new collaborative track “Gotta Get to Peekskill.” It’s the latest single from Dropkick’s upcoming album, Okemah Rising.
As previously reported, Okemah Rising (due May 12th) is the second Dropkick album to interpret the words of late folk legend Woody Guthrie, following last year’s This Machine Still Kills Fascists.
The song features the distinctive voices of Violent Femmes frontman Gordon Gano and Dropkick Murphys singer Ken Casey, as they trade verses on the track, singing Guthrie’s lyrics about confronting the Ku Klux Klan.
“We had the privilege of collaborating with the Violent Femmes on this feisty track,” said Casey in a press release. “Acoustic Dropkicks sounds a lot like the Violent Femmes in my opinion, so the collaboration is musically and symbolically fitting. And singing a song about fighting the Ku Klux Klan is always extra fun.

Has there ever been a rocker more comically perpetually unsatisfied than Gordon Gano? Nearly 40 years have passed since the Violent Femmes debuted their freaky, silly hybrid of folk and rock, and these days they’ve settled comfortably into a style that’s a bit like Bob Dylan meets Monty Python (or sometimes S.J. Perelman). Frontman Gordon Gano still has a beautifully quivering bleat, and on Hotel Last Resort — the group’s 10th full-length and second since reuniting in 2013 — he flexes it hilariously on songs about how he hates choruses (“Another...

25 years after releasing “I’m Nothing” off their sixth LP New Times, the Violent Femmes have rerecorded the track for their upcoming album Hotel Last Resort, out July 26th via Pias.
Featuring pro skateboarder and artist Stefan Janoski, the track is a much more fervent take on the original, complete with frontman Gordon Gano’s raucous strums and jarring vocals. “Are you a republican or a democrat/A liberal fascist full of crap/I’m nothin,'” he sings. “‘I’m Nothing’ explores the modern conundrum of people needing to...

Violent Femmes recruited iconic Television guitarist Tom Verlaine for their surreal new song “Hotel Last Resort.” The five-minute track appears on the folk-punk band’s 10th LP of the same name, out July 26th via Pias.
Throughout the winding cut, guitarist Gordon Gano unfurls a series of intriguing lyrical vignettes (“I don’t change the chords anymore/The chords change themselves”; “I’ve become invisible because one is not divisible”) over droning acoustic strums and Verlaine’s textural lead lines.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is the latest incarnation of a long-running teen archetype — the half-witch, half-human, all-American girl, fighting to grow up on her own terms and being front and center in an ever-mutating story about girldom and its discontents. Every iteration is different — the Archie comic book, the groovy Seventies cartoon, the post-Sassy Melissa Joan Hart 1990s sitcom, the macabre new Netflix thriller. Like A Star Is Born, it’s a story gets told over and over, because each generation’s Sabrina has a new tale to tell.

Alt-rock veterans Violent Femmes recruited Stephen Colbert for a quirky rendition of their 1983 classic "Blister in the Sun" Tuesday on The Late Show. The web-exclusive clip features a gushing introduction from the host, who says of "Blister," "I think I've played [it] a thousand times, and I can't wait to hear a thousand and one."
The trio perform in an acoustic setup, with live percussionist John Sparrow wielding brushes on a barbecue grill. After a brief audience sing-along, frontman Gordon Gano calls out Colbert for a cameo, which includes hushed singing and hilarious jazz-folk scatting.

Lena Dunham's HBO show Girls-and the online conversation that has surrounded it since its April debut-calls to mind something Violent Femmes singer Gordon Gano told Details magazine back in 1993. Paraphrasing the Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset, he noted how "the youth, because he is not yet anything determinate and irrevocable, is everything potentially. Herein lies his charm and his insolence. Feeling that he is everything potentially he supposes that he is everything actually." This keen blend of youthful charm and insolence has made Girls both a critical darling and a topic of intense debate about how the show represents (or fails to represent) one generation's experience of sex, gender, race, privilege, and potential.
For those of us who were Dunham's age in the pop-culture cycle of the early 1990s, there is something eerily familiar in the way Girls-which concludes its first season on Sunday-has set off...

The Digital Content NewFronts are a series of dog and pony shows digital content platforms, creators and providers put on to showcase their previous, current, and upcoming digital entertainment properties to brand representatives and advertisers. The showcasing is generally the easy part. Companies put together sexy sizzle reels with compelling metrics showing how X many million individuals in Y demographics are watching Z amounts of their programming. The hard part is getting the brand representatives and advertisers in the room to watch the showcase. That’s why many events during the Digital Content NewFronts incorporate things like free cocktails, tuna tartare, and appearances by John Legend, Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes, Heidi Klum, and other famous musicians and celebrities. There needs to be some kind of draw to get as many of the people who control the right kinds of advertising dollars in the room as possible. That’s...

HBO's "True Blood" is great TV for many reasons, not least of which is it's music, and the dangerous, swampy vibe it often amplifies. Much of the music compliments the show's main location, and music supervisor Gary Calamar even employs local musicians from Louisiana like Allen Toussaint and C.C. Adcock to lend the show an authentic regional sound. When not working on the soundtrack for "True Blood," Calamar, who also was behind the music of "Six Feet Under," music supes for other shows like "Men of a Certain Age," and "House M.D." He's also a working DJ who has had a nighttime show on Kcrw for something like 13 years, spinning pop, roots rock, blues, and soul. As you can imagine, he gets a lot of soundtrack ideas for his day job, during his night job. He's a busy man, but he found the time to get down with me recently...
