Sometimes, the most simple movie monsters can become the most terrifying, especially when it comes to gruesome kills and excellent practical effects. The eponymous monster in 1988’s The Blob, directed by Chuck Russell from a script he co-wrote with Frank Darabont, acts as a giant slithering stomach, dissolving its food for digestion with extreme acidity. There’s no trace of intelligence in the amoeba-like entity; it’s just an insatiable need to feed. That means that not only is the body count high for this ever-growing creature, but the deaths are deliciously mean-spirited and unforgettable thanks to gruesome special makeup effects from Tony Gardner and an incredible team of artists.
Russell and Darabont reinforce the SFX showcase with unpredictability and meticulous characterization to ensure that not only do the character deaths look painful, but they also hurt emotionally. It’s not just the creature effects that make the Blob’s...

With Chucky Season 3 coming to an end this Wednesday, I had the opportunity to catch up with Don Mancini! We talked all about the second half of Chucky Season 3, including expanding the franchise mythology, writing for the series' recurring characters, and old Chucky's nod to a Mario Bava classic!
Whether it's the films or the TV series, I've always appreciated how you've continued to evolve and expand the mythology in a really organic way. Now in this season, we have old-man Chucky, the afterlife, and more. Can you talk about your approach to expanding the world of Chucky?
Don Mancini: It's a lot of fun! The White House setting is something I've been interested in for a long time, and not even necessarily for a Chucky project. I did a lot of research over the course of several years, and I knew that the White House was a great...

Whether you love or hate them, remakes have been around for a long time, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. An update on The Crow is set to arrive this summer, with Hollywood’s version of Speak No Evil not far behind, just as two upcoming examples.
While not all remakes can hold a candle to the original, there’s been no shortage of fantastic movies that reworked genre favorites in thrilling new ways. Some of which even managed to eclipse the original classics, like 1986’s The Fly or 1982’s The Thing.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror remakes that set themselves apart from the source material, either through expanded storytelling or heightened, visceral horror.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Your new favorite slasher movie is here. And its name is “Totally Killer.”
After a rapturous reception at its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin and ahead of a screening as part of Los Angeles’ Beyond Fest, “Totally Killer” will be available on Prime Video this Friday.
The movie tells the story of Jamie (Kiernan Shipka), a plucky teenager who uses a time machine to travel back to 1987 in an attempt to save her mother (who was killed in the present) and several of her mother’s friends (killed in 1987) – all at the hands of a masked murderer known as the Sweet Sixteen Killer. While in the 1980s she befriends the younger version of her mother (played in the past by Olivia Holt and in the present by Julie Bowen) and alters the timeline in some surprising ways.

Blumhouse and Universal's "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie is looking more and more like it has the makings of being the reason for the Halloween season, and a big part of the allure is seeing the larger-than-life animatronics of Foxy, Bonnie, Chica, and Freddy Fazbear in live-action. The fearsome foursome of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria (home to child murder and possessed robot animals) represents the introduction to horror for a new generation, so it was important that no shortcuts were taken in bringing them all to life. Fortunately, the creative team behind "FNaF" went above and beyond by enlisting the services of the legendary Jim Henson's Creature Shop. With the help of some of the very best in the biz, all of the animatronics look character-correct ... and downright terrifying.

Death is the ultimate leveler. It comes for everyone in the end, no matter your station in life. Never is that more unsettlingly apparent than in 1988’s The Blob, directed by Chuck Russell from a script he co-wrote with Frank Darabont. The creature feature lets loose a gelatinous pink blob of goo upon the small town of Arborville, California, where it wreaks havoc with its insatiable appetite. It doesn’t care about archetypical hero or villain roles; its sole aim is to devour.
The eponymous Blob acts as a giant slithering stomach, dissolving its food for digestion with extreme acidity. That means that not only is the body count high for this ever-growing creature, but the deaths are deliciously mean-spirited and unforgettable thanks to gruesome special makeup effects from Tony Gardner and an incredible team of artists. We don't talk enough about how 1958's "The Blob" and 1988's remake makes for one of the best original/remake combinations. They're both time capsules of societal paranoias from their respective eras. One is about a Pleasantville town banding together to defeat an outsider invader — the next is a government conspiracy flick about corruption within official departments. The '50s film plays around with a cranberry jelly-lookin' monster and cutting-edge photography tricks of the time that could manage such freaky sci-fi effects, while the '80s update enlists future SFX gurus like Tony Gardner to pull off awe-striking gelatinous carnage. Director Chuck Russell helped shape the future of practical-driven horror, showing what all-star craftsmanship can accomplish that digital animation will never touch.
In 1988's "The Blob," multiple scenes douse viewers with buckets of heebie-jeebies. Russell's Blob is a man, woman, and child eater that disintegrates flesh with its acidic slime — and we see it all.

Documentary profile of the interconnections behind the past and current makers of the long-running franchise is bit of a love-in
“The family that slays together stays together” finishes this blow-by-blow retrospective of the Child’s Play/Chucky franchise, and it’s certainly impossible to contest that. Not only does the homicide-happy doll gain his own family during the course of the seven films, but actor Brad Dourif – who voiced him – has been succeeded by daughter Fiona as the head of proceedings, and this documentary is directed by Kyra Elise Gardner, daughter of current head puppeteer Tony Gardner. The close-knit ethos might well explain the franchise’s gleefully perverse sense of fun, but the truth is this love-in features too much filler.

From the creepy ventriloquist’s doll in Dead of Night, to M3gan and The Boy, via The Conjuring and Child’s Play, dolls have made a consistently chilling contribution to the horror genre
The Child’s Play franchise, as with all the best slasher series, is all about the villain. The “Good Guy” doll is occupied by the soul of a serial killer, and thanks to his being voiced by the great Brad Dourif (one of the few actors to take on a slasher movie role after they became famous), has more personality than the likes of Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers laid end to end.
Now Chucky can add a documentary to his ever expanding filmography. “I do remember Chucky being at my birthday parties,” says Kyra Elise Gardner, whose father, Tony Gardner, has been the franchise’s head puppeteer for the past two decades. Her film, Living with Chucky,...

As the daughter of Chucky franchise special effects artist Tony Gardner, director Kyra Elise Gardner offers a unique perspective on the killer doll’s lasting impact in the Screambox Original documentary Living with Chucky.
Child’s Play creator Don Mancini and franchise alumni Brad Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise, Billy Boyd, John Waters, Tony Gardner, David Kirschner, and more spill their guts along with such notable fans as Marlon Wayans, Abigail Breslin, Lin Shaye, and Dan Povenmire, among others.
Here are 9 things I learned from Living with Chucky.

Review: Friday the 13th has Crystal Lake Memories (both the book and the movie). The Nightmare on Elm Street series has the documentary Never Sleep Again. But a lot of the big horror franchises are still waiting to receive their definitive documentaries. Last year, I read the book Reign of Chucky, a film-by-film examination of the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise that was packed with interesting information about the making of the movies. But since it was assembled during the production of season 2 of the Chucky TV series, it was missing one major element: authors Dustin McNeill and Travis Mullins weren’t able to land interviews with some of the most prominent players in the franchise, like Don Mancini, who has written every entry in the series, or actors Brad Dourif,...

Filmmaker Kyra Elise Gardner’s examination of the Child’s Play franchise comes from a personal place in Living with Chucky, debuting on Screambox and Digital on April 4, 2023.
Kyra Elise Gardner is the daughter of Tony Gardner, one of the most prominent and integral special effects artists in the “Chucky” franchise. For the Gardners, Chucky is family.
And the Chucky films, well, they’re often about family as well.
The filmmaker’s familial relationship with the killer Good Guy doll, voiced by Brad Dourif, fittingly coincided with the horror icon unexpectedly finding himself a family in Bride of Chucky. Bride, penned by Don Mancini and directed by Ronny Yu, gave series protagonist Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) a much-needed rest and instead introduced franchise mainstay Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly), opening up new layers to Chucky in the process.

In the clip from Living With Chucky you’ll find below, Jennifer Tilly recalls her introduction to the killer doll that she’d end up becoming intimately familiar with. It’s hard to imagine there was a time in the franchise’s history when Tilly wasn’t in the mix, as Bride of Chucky and the subsequent films – and television series – cemented her status as a true icon of the saga.

Netflix users have been left baffled by a forthcoming removal from the service.
Recently, several titles labelled “Netflix Originals” have been taken down, leading to confusion among viewers.
Each month, Netflix quietly removes several of these films and TV shows, some of which are not widely streamed.
However, the removal of Lilyhammer and Hemlock Grove, two of Netflix’s first-ever Original projects, caused anger among subscribers.
Netflix was able to reverse Lilyhammer’s removal, much to the happiness of lead star Steven Van Zandt, but due to the expiration of a licencing deal with another of Hemlock Grove’s distributors, that series was taken down.
Now, users are concened by the realisation that Arrested Development will be removed.
While the removal of the sitcom’s first three seasons may be understandable, considering they aired on Fox, it’s the fact that season four and five will also be leaving that is angering many.

Netflix users are being left perplexed by You season four’s understanding of London.
The new season of the hit Netflix show was released earlier this month, bringing back Penn Badgley’s murderous Joe Goldberg to screens.
This time around, Joe is in London, with Badgley filming the series in the UK’s capital in 2021.
However, the show, which is an adaptation of the book series by Caroline Kepnes, immediately raised eyebrows for the way it shows Joe travelling around the city.
“Campus is across town from where I stay, but in a city like London, I don't mind the walk.” he says, leaving Royal Holloway, the university based in Egham, Surrey.
Joe is then shown walking past the Commercial Tavern in Shoreditch, before arriving at his destination in South Kensington, all the way over in West London.

Bella Ramsey has opened up about gender fluidity and her non-binary identity.
The 19-year-old actor stars as spunky Ellie in HBO’s hit apocalyptic video game adaptation, The Last of Us, alongside Pedro Pascal’s straight-faced Joel.
After an outbreak decimates America, the two are forced to make a dangerous and life-threatening trek across the country.
Ahead of the series’ January debut, Ramsey spoke to The New York Times, explaining that her “gender has always been very fluid”.
“I’m very much just a person,” she said. “Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”
In a new interview with GQ UK, Ramsey further addressed how her non-binary identity influenced her character.
(She elected to use she/her pronouns for the interview, telling the publication that she doesn’t mind what pronouns are used for her).

Fawlty Towers co-creator and actor, Connie Booth has said she didn’t know the show was getting a reboot.
The former actor – who played Polly in the show – claims she found out about the news the same way as anyone else, by reading it “in the papers”.
Last week, John Cleese announced he would be rebooting the classic sitcom with his daughter, Camilla Cleese.
The Monty Python’s Flying Circus actor, who starred in the original series as hotel owner Basil Fawlty, is currently working on the new series in collaboration with Spinal Tap filmmaker Rob Reiner.
Both Cleese and his daughter will write and star in the revival, which is currently in development.
The original series starred Connie Booth – Cleese’s then-wife who co-created the series – along with Prunella Scales as Basil’s wife Sybil and the late Andrew Sachs as hotel employee Manuel.

Penn Badgley has shared his perspective on viewers having crushes on serial killers, saying that the blame for people finding Jeffrey Dahmer attractive is “on Netflix”.
The actor plays stalker and serial killer Joe Goldberg on the streaming service’s hit thriller, You.
(You can find The Independent’s review of the first half of season four here.)
The popularity of You, as well as the dramatisations of the stories of real-life killers Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy in recent years, has coincided with some viewers expressing attraction to these violent figures.
In a recent interview promoting You’s fourth season, Badgley was asked about the message he’d send to “people who are finding themselves attracted to serial killers”.
He replied: “You need to look at that, inside.”
Continuing his point in a video on Entertainment Tonight’s TikTok account, the Gossip Girl star reasoned: “Now, to be fair,...

Bradley Walsh’s ITV co-star has addressed claims that their show has been cancelled.
Last week, it was claimed that comedy drama series The Larkins, starring Walsh and Joanna Scanlan, would come to an end due to low ratings.
While ITV is yet to officially announce the show’s cancellation, one of its stars shared a message in response to the claims on social media.
“Thanks for watching #thelarkins,” Tony Gardner wrote.
In the series, Gardner, whose other credits include Last Tango in Halifax and My Parents Are Aliens, plays the wealthy Alec Norman.
He continued: “Made lots of memories and new friends. Can’t ask for any more than that.”
The Larkins, which debuted in 2021, is inspired by He Bates’ novel The Darling Buds of May. The book received its own TV adaptation in the 1990s.
A third series of The Larkins has been filmed, and will be broadcast later this year.

Charlotte Ritchie fans are very excited for Charlotte Ritchie. The star of Fresh Meat and Call The Midwife is much-loved on her home turf but her fans predict a new wave of stateside stans. “Charlotte Ritchie’s fame era incoming,” reads one tweet. Another laments: “It’s gonna be hard to gatekeep Charlotte Ritchie now.” Others skew more unhinged. A few are of the “I’d let Charlotte Ritchie step on me” variety. “That’s so worrying!” Ritchie, who is absent from social media and therefore cloistered from its deranged dialect, laughs. “Flattering – but worrying!”
Her fans are probably right. Soon an international audience will awaken to Ritchie’s charms thanks to her role in Netflix’s hit show You. The series – which, in a coup of casting, sees Gossip Girl hearthrob Penn Badgley play a serial stalker, sometimes murderer – is Ritchie’s most international foray yet. Now in its fourth season,...

Chuck Russell's 1988 sci-fi/horror remake "The Blob" features an enormous, all-consuming rosy mass making its way to the fictional small American town of Arborville, California. Naturally, a lot of people are plunged into its gelatinous maw, and the result isn't pretty.
Like Irvin Yeaworth's 1958 original, the adults are feckless and it's up to the youths to save the day -- except this time, no one is trying to convince us that a nearly-30 Steve McQueen is a cherubic high schooler. But the film's greatest divergence from its 1958 predecessor was its updated special effects, and the big-screen carnage it enabled. After eating the arm of a drifter, the ever-spreading goo grows with every organism it eats, from boyfriends to sheriffs to children; the shocking deaths earned the movie a spot on /Film's list of science fiction movies that "go too far."

The current generation of horror fans might know Shawnee Smith as the unstable Jigsaw protege, Amanda Young, in the "Saw" movie franchise, but older moviegoers remember the time she battled a supersized man-eating slimeball.
Chuck Russell's "The Blob" is one of the great movie remakes, retaining the small-town thrills of the 1958 original while improving elements like the incredible special effects needed to pull off the monster of the title. The story was originally inspired by the real-life accounts of two cops who, in 1950, observed something falling from the sky that, upon closer inspection, appeared to slowly propel itself. Irvin Yeaworth's atomic age feature was a highly dramatized version of said events, and by the time the 1988 version came along, the Blob went from an extraterrestrial substance to one engineered in a secret government lab. In Russell's iteration, Shawnee Smith stars as Meg Penny, one of the youths that go toe-to-slime with the creeping creature.
