Ask most cinephiles about the spaghetti western and Sergio Leone’s name will most likely be invoked. As for those who’ve delved a little deeper into the genre, chances are that they’ll name-drop one or both of the other Sergios: Sergio Corbucci (Django) and Sergio Sollima (The Big Gundown).
Back in 2021, Arrow Video’s Vengeance Trails box set aimed to broaden viewers’ horizons of the spaghetti western by spotlighting works by directors like Lucio Fulci, Massimo Dallamano, and Antonio Margheriti, whose names are more often associated with other genres. Now along comes Blood Money, which unveils several lesser-known yet excellent examples of the genre. The thematic through line this time out concerns the value placed on human life. As the grizzled protagonist of Find a Place to Die puts it: “Madness and greed were in men’s hearts a long time before you came along.”

Yesterday we shared the news of the three-disc special edition 4K release Severin Films is planning for the 1981 film Nightmare, a.k.a. Nightmares in a Damaged Brain. Now we have another awesome Severin Films release to let you know about, as they will be giving legendary director Lucio Fulci‘s 1977 film The Psychic a four-disc special edition 4K release!
Described as Fulci’s “ultimate giallo masterpiece”, The Psychic was scripted by Fulci, Roberto Gianviti, and Dardano Sacchetti, and is also known as Seven Notes in Black or Murder to the Tune of the Seven Black Notes. Apparently Quentin Tarantino entertained the idea of remaking the film with Bridget Fonda in the lead role back in the ’90s. Fulci’s film stars Jennifer O’Neill (Scanners) as a woman tormented by violent visions of past slayings. Or are they premonitions of murders still to come?

The tough guys in Yves Boisset’s crime drama answer revenge with revenge, and Michel Bouquet’s rogue cop commits outrageous acts of lawlessness to nail his partner’s killer. The French censors were up at arms over Boisset’s slight to police honor, yet the subject isn’t corruption — everything is ‘honor and decency.’ A fine gallery of Gallic thugs fills out the cast; both they and the attitude toward law and order are a step beyond Jean-Pierre Melville, but not an improvement. With standout work from Michel Constantin, Théo Sarapo, Henri Garcin and Bernard Fresson.

Jennifer O’Neill stars as a fabulously dressed clairvoyant in Fulci’s revived 1977 thriller that looks amazing, even if the sexual politics are dodgy
Italian director Lucio Fulci’s dusty giallo thriller from 1977 – also known as Murder to the Tune of the Seven Black Notes – has been retrieved from the shelf of some rights holder’s back catalogue and spruced up for rerelease. That gives us all a chance to appreciate, either anew or for the first time, its glorious deployment of tacky camera zooms, lurid colours and dubbed dialogue – the latter being a particularly evocative hallmark of 1970s Italian cinema, just a fraction out of sync with the actors’ lip movements. And like many other so-called classics from the giallo cupboard, the script is cheesy tosh with a nasty taste for violence against women; you have to put it down as par for the course given the time it was made.

Imitation can interact just swell with flattery, thanks, as long as the imitator comes at the material with sincerity or at the very least a respect for what came before. But who are we kidding? In the horror world - especially the old times of the indie one - imitation is usually followed by lawsuits, and flattery is frequently nowhere to be found. This brings us to Star Odyssey (1979), an Italian space opera that attempts to flatter a very popular film of the time, and instead gives us a giddily goofy take that has everything but a decoder ring.
Star Odyssey was released in its homeland in time for Halloween, and that’s pretty appropriate - there are more than enough cheap and silly costumes present for a grade three monster party, and the game cast pretends in high style. Or low style as it were; this cinematic buffet offers...

With the huge popularity of the Leone-Eastwood spaghetti westerns featuring Eastwood’s iconic The Man with No Name character, it was inevitable that other characters would be rolled out to cash in on the craze. Django, Trinity, Ringo, and Sabata all had series of their own. But perhaps the most popular spaghetti western character after The Man with No Name is Sartana.
And, much like Django, there were both official and unofficial sequels to the Sartana films. These unofficial “sequels” bore no real resemblance to the original Sartana films other than tacking the name Sartana onto the title in an effort to cash in on the popularity of the character. Arrow is now releasing, in one complete, deluxe box set the five official films in the Sartana series.

It was arguably the success of A Fistful of Dollars that really set the ball rolling on the slew of shameless spaghetti western rip-offs and cash-ins that proliferated throughout the 1960s, as film-makers jostled to get a taste of the sauce and chow down on a cut of the rewards from what quickly became a very profitable arena in which to be operating.
Sartana rode into town a little later than popular gunslingers such as Sabata, Django and Ringo, but he made enough of an impression to warrant a number of official sequels – and several unofficial ones too. Just five legitimate Sartana films were lensed, with Gianni Garko (billed as John Garko) headlining in four of them and George Hilton just one. Cucumber cool antihero Sartana was notably more dapper than most of his mud-spattered box office rivals, a real snappy dresser in fact; with his black cape lined in red silk,...

The 5-Disc Blu-ray Set The Complete Sartana will be available July 3rd From Arrow Video
Clint Eastwood s Man with No Name spawned imitations, each providing their own twist on the Eastwood antihero, and each of them then subject to their own spate of unofficial sequels, spoofs and cash-ins.
Sartana tapped into more than just his Spaghetti Western predecessors a mysterious figure, he has a spectral quality, aided by his Count Dracula-alike cloak which also nods towards comic strip figure Mandrake the Magician, with whom he shares he shares a penchant for card tricks. He takes pride in his appearance unlike the Eastwood s dusty wanderer or Nero s mud-caked drifter. And there s a dose of James Bond too in his fondness for gadgetry and the droll sense of humour.
Unsurprisingly, this unique figure in the genre was treated to four official follow-ups. The Complete Sartana collects all five films,...

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

Following are some supplemental sections featuring notable director & actor teams that did not meet the criteria for the main body of the article. Some will argue that a number of these should have been included in the primary section but keep in mind that film writing on any level, from the casual to the academic, is a game of knowledge and perception filtered through personal taste.

An insurance fiddle on a strongbox of gold is initiated by a scheming cabal of town dignitaries in Gianfranco Parolini's 1968 angel of death film ... If You Meet Sartana, Pray For Your Death. Into the breach steps the Sartana (Gianni Garko), the most stylish character ever to set foot in the usually grubby and sweat-drenched world of the Spaghetti Western. He takes it upon himself to serve justice upon the outlaws, Mexican bandits and corrupt officialdom, in the process walking away with a coffin-load of loot, as he influences events, turns up unexpectedly, or simply takes matters into his own hands with the silver Sharp's Derringer and Winchester rifle that play integral roles in his personal arsenal.
Ample death, ample destruction and muchos double-crossing quickly follow.

Reduced to catching frogs for food, Confederate soldiers returning from the war are treated as second-class citizens and hunted down by a gang of bounty hunters (in a similar premise to The Great Silence), operating under the protection of local law enforcement agencies.
Guiliano Gemma (The Day of Anger, A Pistol For Ringo) plays Michael 'California' Random, one such soldier who takes the naive Willy Preston (Miguel Bose) under his wing. When his companion is shot in the back and strung up for stealing a horse, California travels to his parents' Georgia ranch to break the bad news. In typical style he falls for Helen, his dead comrade's sister, and following the senseless killing of three Confederates by bounty killer Rope Whitaker (Raimund Harmstorf) and his men, he gets caught up in the ensuing crossfire as federal agents arrive to take Whitaker down. The sister is taken hostage as the gang make their escape,...

So, with Inglorious Bastards having recently premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, I figured I'd put together a list of some awesome WW2 films as a resource for anyone wanting to beef up their WW2 film knowledge before checking out Tarantino's self-proclaimed 'masterpiece'. It's worth noting that I focused on older films -- pre-1980 for the most part -- and only the stories featuring Nazi's. It was tough to cut this down to 15 films, but I'm sure you all will be able to come up with...
