Alien 3 has a storied history, with shifting writers and directors, studio interference and complete disarray. It’s all well documented and continues to be one of the most faceted “What if?” productions in modern movies. What if William Gibson’s script was used? What if Ridley’s role had been diminished to the point of cameo? What if Renny Harlin had stayed on as director of Alien 3? Well, on the last point, the director wants fans to know that his departure came down to story issues.
Speaking with SlashFilm, Renny Harlin recalled wanting to bring Xenomorphs to Earth for Alien 3, which would have shook up the structure and taken audiences through something they hadn’t yet experienced. “The concept of having these creatures on Earth for the studio, it felt scary and unattainable. For me, it was the natural evolution. We’ve had the Alien with the truck drivers in space,...

Keanu Reeves has always had a career worth the envy of his contemporaries. From his righteous indignance against violence in turning down Oliver Stoneʼs Platoon to becoming one of the most in-demand action movie stars, even in his late 50s, Reeves doesnʼt leave much to the imagination as far as his success is concerned. But even those set on the path of success can sometimes tread down the wrong path.

Despite the direction in which Reeves was later bound to go in his career, in hindsight, the actor got his start playing charming go-getters stuck in difficult predicaments. Be it Speed or Constantine or The Devilʼs Advocate, he has always been the quiet charmer with a chip on his shoulder, fighting against all odds for the selfless greater good.

Having spent years in development limbo as films were announced only to vanish back into the ether, we are finally getting a screen version of William Gibson's iconic cyberpunk tome Neuromancer via a series in the works at Apple TV+. And the show's creative team is plucking an Apple TV veteran to star, as Masters Of The Air's Callum Turner is aboard in the lead role.
Gibson's book, which was first published in 1984, went on to receive a Hugo Award, a Nebula Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award. The novel follows Henry Case (the role Turner is taking), a washed-up hacker hired for one last job by a shady ex-military officer, which brings him in contact with a powerful artificial intelligence.
Gibson crafted two follow-ups, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive, which means there's material for future seasons if needed, or a potential anthology series. Graham Roland...

Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of director like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. While these projects were being put together (and while they fell apart), Neuromancer fans always wondered who would end up playing the lead character, Henry Dorsett Case. Hayden Christensen was rumored to be the top contender when Kahn was going to direct (with Liv Tyler rumored to co-star). Liam Neeson and Mark Wahlberg were said to be in the running for Natali’s version, although it wasn’t said who they might be playing.

From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe used to be at the apex of the world of Cinema at one time, especially thanks to the massive hit of the Avengers films. Since 2008’s Iron Man, fans were immediately drawn into the world created by several talented people, as it was evident they were planning something incredible. Interestingly enough, The Matrix was also inspired by a rare 1993 Marvel comic.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has undergone numerous changes and developments over the years, getting mixed responses from fans and critics alike. Rouge Redstar, the main character, is an android (known as a Nean) tasked with destroying the Immortal Nine. However, the Immortal Nine are Neans just like Rouge who wish to be free from the society that oppresses them. From its plot to its futuristic settling, Metallic Rouge touches upon some key elements of the cyberpunk subgenre. Let's explore a little of what cyberpunk actually is and then get into a rec list of six anime to watch if you like Metallic Rouge . What is Cyberpunk? The origin of cyberpunk is uncertain indeed. Many enthusiasts trace its birth to some William Gibson novels that are known as the " Sprawl Trilogy ". Many cyberpunk titles can be traced back to these works. Related:...

Some movies can be so iconic that they accidentally end up damaging their own genre in the long run. For instance, we’re all aware of how cyberpunk has been living in the shadow of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner since 1984, with it being nearly impossible to tell a story about a futuristic dystopia without bringing out the flying cars and neon signage. Fortunately, there are exceptions to this rule, and one of my personal favorites happens to be Kathryn Bigelow’s 1995 sci-fi thriller Strange Days.
A genre-bending murder mystery that takes place in the “distant” future of 1999, this special little film has aged spectacularly well despite its pre-millennial DNA, tackling pertinent issues like race relations and police corruption while also telling a surprisingly engaging love story. This is precisely why I think revisiting this retro-futuristic New Year’s extravaganza is the perfect way to start off 2024 with a bang.

On the 9th day of Creepmas, the aliens and tech run amok to stuff the socks with horror. Science fiction’s broad umbrella covers everything from the future to outer space to alternate realities via technology. Sometimes, it means one bleak holiday. For other movies, it yields zany results.

David Fincher is one of the most important filmmakers of his generation – endlessly praised, shamelessly ripped off and somehow still undervalued (He still hasn’t won a Best Director Oscar).
His work conjures up darkened hallways, dogged detectives and crazed killers. The word “Fincherian” has come to describe something twisted and somehow beautiful. As an artist he frequently pushes the boundaries of what is possible technologically, while also playing with the comfort level of his audience. If it doesn’t feel a little bit dangerous, is it even a David Fincher movie?
With “The Killer,” in theaters now and on Netflix on November 10, Fincher takes us on another wild journey, this time alongside a sardonic hit man (Michael Fassbender). In celebration of “The Killer,” we thought we’d look back at his entire filmography. It’s a journey as dark and labyrinthine as anything the filmmaker could cook up.

The Peripheral is not returning for a second season on Prime Video after all. Amazon has reversed its renewal due to the work stoppage stemming from the current writers and actors strikes in the industry. The strikes have delayed production for several shows, and those series headed into their second seasons are among the most vulnerable to cancellation.

The new science fiction TV series “The Peripheral”, adapting author William Gibson’s sci-fi novel, directed by Vincenzo Natalie and starring Chloë Grace Moretz ("Kick-Ass"), has been canceled after one season of streaming on Prime Video:

One night she dons a headset and finds herself in futuristic London — a sleek and mysterious world, alluringly different from her own hardscrabble existence. But this isn’t like any game she’s ever played before: Flynne begins to realize it isn’t virtual reality … it’s real.

While we won't know how the negotiations between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and Writers Guild of America (WGA) turn out until we hear directly from the union, Amazon Studios is now the first to specifically cite the strikes as the justification for canceling, I'm sorry, un-renewing a show. The Chloë Grace Moretz-starring sci-fi series "The Peripheral" was renewed for a second series in February of 2023, but as noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Prime Video has changed its mind.
THR also reports that season 2 had just begun preproduction ahead of WGA members going on strike in May, which has now become a dual strike following the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike in July. The series was created by Scott B. Smith based on William Gibson's novel of the same name, with "Westworld" creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy...

The Peripheral and A League of Their Own had both been renewed for second seasons, but it was announced today that both shows have been cancelled.
The Peripheral is a sci-fi drama based on William Gibson’s 2014 book of the same name that stars Chloe Grace Moretz as Flynne Fisher, a young woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. The series cost a whopping $175 million and didn’t hold audiences as much as Amazon had hoped, but it was nonetheless renewed for a shortened second season earlier this year. The ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have been cited as the reason behind the cancellation.

Despite doing well in its first season, Prime Video has sadly reversed its renewal of The Peripheral.
The change of heart likely stemmed from the dual strikes occurring across the industry.
The series starred Chloë Grace Moretz as Flynne Fischer, a woman who discovered a secret connection to an alternate reality as well as a dark future of her own.
What is one of the first of likely many strike-related cancellations, The Peripheral seemed to fare well on the streamer.
Each week, Twitter would be abuzz with theories and praise for the show, especially for the performances from Moretz and one of the lead antagonists, played by T'Nia Miller.
With the WGA on strike for over 100 days and SAG-AFTRA on strike for over a month, we expect there to be many similar cases of reversals when it comes to renewed series that hadn't already begun production.

Prime Video has canceled “The Peripheral,” despite the Chloë Grace Moretz-led sci-fi series receiving a renewal for a second season in February.
An individual with knowledge of the matter tells TheWrap that the cancelation stems from delays caused by the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America strike, which began on May 2, and SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14. The individual noted that the series was originally intended to go into production this year for a release in 2024.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by William Gibson, the series hailed from “Westworld” creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films banner, who are under an overall deal at Amazon Studios. “The Peripheral” follows Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America.
The Peripheral has had its second-season renewal at Amazon’s Prime Video undone, putting an end to the sci-fi series.
The un-renewal comes during strikes by Hollywood writers and actors, and sources cite the work stoppages as the reason for The Peripheral not moving ahead with season two. Prime Video had picked up a second season in February, about two months after the first (and now only) season finished its run.
The series is the first show to have an order rescinded with the strikes cited as the reason for the un-renewal. Season two had begun preproduction in early May when writers went on strike, seeking a better contract from studios and streamers. Actors union SAG-AFTRA called its own strike in mid-July.

“The Peripheral” has been canceled at Amazon’s Prime Video, Variety has learned.
The news comes despite the fact that Amazon renewed the show for a second season back in February. The series, based on the William Gibson novel of the same name, debuted on Amazon on Oct. 21, 2022.
It starred Chloë Grace Moretz and hailed from executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan under their rich overall deal with Amazon. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the decision to not move forward with the second season was heavily influenced by the ongoing writers and actors strikes. In essence, even if the show was to go back into production soon, Season 2 would not be available until close to if not into 2025.
Per the official logline, the series “centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America.

The cyberpunk genre is perhaps now more popular and relevant than ever, and the same can be said for actor Keanu Reeves. Together they would prove to be a powerful pairing with the sci-fi masterpiece The Matrix and the recent hit videogame Cyberpunk 2077.
However, that was not the case in 1995, when Johnny Mnemonic was released to confounded and indifferent audiences. How did the combined efforts of a newly minted A-list star, a noted visionary artist, and a pioneer in cyberpunk fiction result in a target of ridicule and a box office disappointment?
Jack in and fill your head with Wtf Happened to this Movie!
The cyberpunk subgenre of science fiction can be broadly characterized with the theme of “high tech and low life” and it typically involves futuristic dystopian societies, advanced science and technology, body enhancements, dominant corporations, and sharp class disparity. The consolidation in the talent representation space continues. Agency for the Performing Arts and music touring agency Artist Group International (Agi) are merging, with the combined full-service agency rebranded as Independent Artist Group (Iag). APA President Jim Osborne is being named CEO of Iag, with Dennis Arfa, founder and CEO of Agi, as Chairman of the Music Division of Iag. Former longtime APA CEO Jim Gosnell will serve on the board of Agi alongside Osborne and Arfa.
Agi was founded 35 years ago by Arfa and acquired by Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa Entertainment in 2012. The client roster that it brings to Iag includes Billy Joel, Metallica, Def Leppard, Rod Stewart, Motley Crue, Linkin Park, Jane’s Addiction, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Norah Jones, Neil Young, The Strokes, Smashing Pumpkins, Ghost and Elvis Costello.
Jim Osborne and Dennis Arfa
The merger, which had been rumored for awhile, stems from an agreement between APA and Yucaipa Entertainment.

Agency for the Performing Arts, which has aggressively expanded its agent count in the last few years, and Artist Group International, one of the biggest touring agencies in the music space, have merged to form a new full-service talent firm that is seeking to take on CAA and WME in the representation space.
The combined company will be renamed Independent Artist Group and have Jim Osborne, the current president of APA, as its CEO. Dennis Arfa, the founder and CEO of Agi, has been named chairman of the music division. The new positions take effect immediately.

In 1995, we screamed, “Hack the planet!” Today, my mom can watch any movie on her phone. When we walk around with computers in our pockets, fantasies about jacking into cyberspace and accessing vast amounts of information seem quaint, if not outright laughable. But it’s that very mundane nature that makes cyberpunk such an important genre, even in 2023.
The cyberpunk genre began in literature, first in stories published in the UK magazine New Worlds and later in novels from writers such as William Gibson (Neuromancer), J.G. Ballard (High Rise), and Philip K. Dick. These writers took a darker look at the technology of the future, showing how new inventions did nothing to change inequality and corruption, only reinforcing the worst parts of humanity.
For most people, cinematic cyberpunk is synonymous with 1982’s Blade Runner, an adaption of the Dick book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

According to our current combined predictions, Jodie Comer (“Prima Facie”) is the frontrunner to win Best Actress in a Play at this year’s Tony Awards with 12/5 odds. She already won an Olivier a couple of months ago for her work in the West End production. She would be the fifth Tony winner in this category for a one-woman performance.
In Suzie Miller‘s one-woman show, Comer plays Tessa, a barrister from working-class origins who must deal with an unexpected event that forces her to confront the patriarchal power and morality of the law.
When it comes to solo performances at the Tonys, four have prevailed in this category before. In 1977 Julie Harris won her fifth and final competitive accolade for her portrayal of Emily Dickinson in William Luce‘s “The Belle of Amherst.” In 1986 Lily Tomlin won for playing multiple characters in Jane Wagner‘s “The Search for Signs...

Sorry To Bother You is a film that I have been sleeping on. To borrow vernacular that, and inaccurately. I have not failed to recognise its quality, its invention and its power. What I have failed to do, repeatedly, is tell you about it here.
There's a quote attributed to William Gibson that suggests the future is here, just not yet evenly distributed. From 2023, the film appears not only prescient but, I would argue, timeless, in a way that marks it as a (cult) classic. As we get works based on the collapse of WeWork, as we see the consequences of labour organisation in corporate monoliths like Starbucks, as a symbol and symptom of Trump era collapse, of this, that, the next thing. There's a phrase 'morally emaciated' but Sorry To Bother You has a belly full, rage in its liver.
I've seen it described as a film with a twist.

What would humans do if they got ahold of alien technology? In Vincenzo Natali’s upcoming graphic novel Tech, they’d exploit it for profit. Releasing on September 22, 2023 from publisher Encyclopocalypse Publications, Tech furthers Natali’s passion for sci-fi horror into the realm of literary fiction.
“We have been admirers of Vincenzo’s unique vision and imagination ever since Cube blew our minds. Working with him on Tech, which is a stunning and visionary piece of art, has been a dream.” says Sean Duregger, Managing Editor of Encyclopocalypse Publications.
Tech explores a not-too-distant future in which mankind has cracked the code for alien engineering. Obtaining such insight carries a hefty price tag that Earth’s miscreants are willing to pay – and lowly courier Shel can deliver. Business is booming, but it’s a dangerous occupation; one that she would’ve abandoned long ago if not for her daughter’s expensive medical treatments.

The venerable Deadline reports that a new Stargate series and a new movie/s are currently being discussed at Amazon, with the movie “likely going first.”
It’s not a huge surprise to learn that Stargate (along with Robocop) is a priority for Amazon now that the $8.5 billion MGM purchase has bedded in – they were on the list mooted by industry insider Jeff Snider back in March – but this is the first time one of the major news sites has weighed in.
What is new is the suggestion that it could open with a new movie, which totally makes sense. After all, Amazon recently found its cinema legs with the $100 million release of Creed III, and a new blockbuster Stargate movie would be a fantastic way to kick off a new series in style. That’d hopefully give a new Stargate series a much better chance of survival than so...

Whenever the tech industry rolls out a new innovation, they always quote some great work of science fiction --- but Silicon Valley doesn't really understand the stories they're reading and watching. That's why the three-time Hugo Award-winning podcast Our Opinions Are Correct is launching a new miniseries called "Silicon Valley vs. Science Fiction," to explore all the ways that tech companies have misinterpreted or misunderstood the great works of the genre, in order to create marketing hype.
The first episode is a deep dive into some unexpected science fictional inspirations of today’s AI products such as ChatGPT – and reveals some of the extremely unsavory underpinnings of Silicon Valley’s AI philosophy. Future episodes will explore how mad scientist stories fueled the “difficult genius” myth among tech CEOs, and how Ayn Rand’s work is implicated in the gig economy.

In the desert days before Charlie bit anyone’s finger and that baby panda sneezed its way into our hearts, there was scant opportunity to see funny home videos. "The Matrix," like all great stories, was built on some great inspirations. Its basal foundations can be daunting, involving some deep dives into Buddhist theology, philosophy, and the development of AI. The Wachowski sisters drew from three non-fiction grimoires, if you'll pardon the term, to build their world of machine and man. "Out of Control," by Kevin Kelly, is a look at the potential of mechanical evolution. "Introducing Evolutionary Psychology" by Dylan Evans shaped the id of Neo's life. And "Simulacra and Simulation" by Jean Baudrillard is a well-known philosophical treatise that birthed Morpheus' "desert of the real."
These are tough books, but they provide terrific insight into the thought process behind the Matrix itself. Readers who would prefer to take the blue pill instead and jaunt through imaginary worlds in search of a similar fix to Neo's journey through ones and zeros toward his personal nirvana will find plenty of science fiction to enjoy,...

This article contains spoilers for The Peripheral season 1 and Don’t Worry, Darling.
The first season of Prime Video’s William Gibson adaptation, The Peripheral has come to an end, an absolutely wild trip through issues of environmentalism, fascism, warfare, and technology that will likely take us ages to fully unpack. But the series has also been about video games in general and virtual reality in particular. Yes, it turns out that virtual reality can actually be a kind of alternate universe telepresence time travel, but virtuality remains pretty close to the core of the story throughout. Even the finale pivoted around the concept of a real life “save game” (or “reboot” as they call it in the episode).
When we first meet Flynne (Chloë Grace Moretz), she is moonlighting as a videogame grinder for wealthy clients who are stuck on a first-person shooter. When she enters a post-apocalyptic alternate future London,...
