Updated: German film master Wim Wenders was greeted like a rock star in Lyon, France, where he received an honorary tribute on Friday evening (Oct. 21) at the Lumiere Festival, a week-long celebration of classic cinema headed by Cannes festival boss Thierry Fremaux.
“I’ve received prizes in my life but this time it’s different, it’s the the prize of cinema!” said Wenders after stepping on stage to the beat of Texas’ “I Don’t Want a Lover.” Glancing at Fremaux who was standing nearby, Wenders added, with a cheeky smile, “I don’t want to say that a Palme d’Or is nothing. But the Lumiere Prize is unique and I’m proud of it!” Wenders, who won the Palme d’Or with “Paris, Texas,” is considered a Cannes regular. He’s presented his most iconic films there, including “Wings of Desire” which won best director. This year,...

Andrey Zvyagintsev, the two-time Oscar-nominated Russian filmmaker of “Loveless” and “Leviathan,” will next direct “Jupiter,” a politically-minded movie set to shoot in Spain and France next spring.
The movie will tell the story of a Russian oligarch’s reckoning with the harsh reality of his family’s future.
Anonymous Content and Lorem Ipsum Entertainment (“War on Everyone”) are producing “Jupiter” alongside Les Films du Losange (“A Silence”) in France and Elastica Films (“Anatomy of a Fall”) in Spain. Zvyagintsev will reteam with his regular crew, including cinemtographer Mikhail Krichman and production designer Andrey Ponkratov, who worked “Loveless” and “Leviathan.”
“Jupiter” is set in the seemingly impenetrable world of the ultra-wealthy and is being described by the producers as an “unrelenting exploration of power and corruption.”
Zvyagintsev said “Jupiter” will be a “very modern story” which “goes beyond today’s political context.” “The nature of absolute power is a universal theme,...

France has officially selected “The Taste of Things” as its Oscars submission for Best International Feature at the 2024 Academy Awards in what may be a surprise for some following the race.
“The Taste of Things” (IFC Films stateside) debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where filmmaker Trần Anh Hùng won the Best Director prize. But the French selection committee could’ve gone with the actual 2023 Cannes Palme d’Or winner, Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of Fall,” which has a better chance crossing over into other Oscars categories. That includes for lead actress contender Sandra Hüller, who also stars in the U.K.’s International submission, “The Zone of Interest.”
Smart crowdpleaser “The Taste of Things,” titled “The Pot-au-Feu” back at Cannes, stars Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel as two chefs who are lovers across 20 years in the 19th century. The film is an adaptation of Marcel Rouffe’s 1924 novel “The Passionate Epicure,...

In a surprising twist of events, France’s Oscar committee has chosen the culinary romance “The Taste of Things” over “Anatomy of a Fall,” Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winning film, to represent the country in the international feature film race.

“Anatomy of a Fall,” meanwhile, was acquired by Neon, the Oscar-maker behind “Parasite,” at Cannes. The movie has been thriving at the French box office with approximately 8 million euros grossed from nearly 1 million admissions. A small blurb in the Le film français profiling Charles Gillibert (and his prod company CG Cinéma) and the multi-faceted Les Films du Losange reveals that two major auteurs are working on projects that could easily be in the competition section mix for the Palme d’or next year.
The Mauvais Sang, Les Amants du Pont-Neuf and more recently Annette director Leos Carax will not wait a decade between projects — as he is currently in production and its titled C’est pas moi. Is this the same project that connected the filmmaker to Jennifer Lawrence?

The phrase “turning the camera inward” takes on a new literal meaning in true body horror film “De Humani Corporis Fabrica.”
Not for the squeamish, the immersive experience from the Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab is co-directed by “Leviathan” filmmakers Verena Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor. The film debuted at 2022 Cannes and played at TIFF and NYFF.
Five centuries ago, anatomist André Vésale opened up the human body to science for the first time in history. Today, “De Humani Corporis Fabrica” opens the human body to the cinema. Kino Lorber has acquired North American distribution rights to Pietro Marcello’s sprawling post-wwi film “Scarlet,” which opened Cannes’ Directors Fortnight.
Represented in international markets by Orange Studio, “Scarlet” will have its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival, before a theatrical release in 2023.
A loose adaptation of Alexander Grin’s novel, “Scarlet” marks Kino’s second collaboration with Marcello. It follows “Martin Eden,” which competed at Venice, won best actor for Luca Marinelli and went on to play at Toronto.
Marcello, who rose to prominence as a documentarian with his film “The Mouth of the Wolf,” penned the script for “Scarlet” with his regular screenwriting partner Maurizio Braucci (“Martin Eden”) and Maud Ameline, with the participation of novelist Geneviève Brisac.
“Scarlet” was produced by Charles Gillibert and Ilya Stewart. The film stars Raphaël Thiery and Juliette Jouan as father and daughter, alongside Louis Garrel, Noémie Lvovsky and Yolande Moreau.

After staging a vastly scaled-down version in 2020, organizers of the Cannes Film Festival brought buzz back to the Croisette last year as the industry dipped its toes into the annual French gathering. As the 75th edition kicked off May 17, many in the business are all-in on the in-person experience and there are plenty of completed films for sale.
Mubi took an early lead in acquisitions, scooping up Léa Mysius’s sophomore film “The Five Devils” and Park Chan-wook’s mystery “Decision to Leave” in recent weeks. Other films arriving with distribution include Brett Morgen’s David Bowie doc “Moonage Daydream,” from Neon. A24 has five films premiering at Cannes, including Alex Garland’s “Men” and Claire Denis’ “The Stars at Noon.”
Still up for grabs are films like “Hunt,” the directorial debut of “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae, and Arnaud Desplechin’s “Brother and Sister.”
