Horror is a genre that constantly tries to upend audience expectations. In this last year alone, horror features like “Barbarian” and “M3GAN” have tried to tell new, unique tales that have franchise potential, so it’s not hard to find a movie that just wants to tell a story in a creative way.
Such is the case with “Cobweb,” a wholly original story written by Chris Thomas Devlin (who wrote the 2022 reboot of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”) that appears to draw heavy inspiration from short-form horror content like “Tales From the Crypt” and features like “The People Under the Stairs.” And if you enjoy those inspirations, “Cobweb” sets itself up to be a success, especially with its leads being Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr, two performers who know how to creep people out.
The setup is fascinating almost immediately. Young Peter (Woody Norman) lives in an old house with his parents,...

It is hard to look at any movie with “Exorcist” in its title and not immediately think of William Friedkin’s eternal 1973 Oscar-winning horror classic that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Nevertheless there have been dozens of films of various stripes that have tried to conjure their own magic in this sub-genre, but none that have managed to surpass what Friedkin and screenwriter William Peter Blatty did with that brilliant film.
Now though, with a bit of a twist we have a new entry, The Pope’s Exorcist, which is hoping to lure audiences with the promise of the story of an actual exorcist — and not just any run-of-the-mill demon slayer but rather Father Gabriele Amorth, who for 36 years plied his trade at the Vatican, rising to chief exorcist there in 1992 until his death in 2016. Before we begin, let’s make something clear: Russell Crowe’s Father Gabriele Amorth is a cool priest. How cool is he? He’s so cool that whenever he exits Vatican City he rides a vespa while bathed in perpetual sunset. How cool is he? When that vespa crosses the Ponte Sant’Angelo his film throws up a title card that reads “Rome, Italy”. How cool is he?! When he speaks with an Italian accent, it’s like Chico Marx has risen from the grave and come back with the swagger of Serpico.
This call and response is necessary because you need to know that Crowe’s exorcist is the most Bde exorcist we’ve had onscreen in ages. He’s also something of a saving grace for The Pope’s Exorcist, a movie that could be the stuff of fire and brimstone with a lesser lead performance.

On the face of it, “The Pope’s Exorcist” would have you believe that it’s rooted in the real-life experiences of the late Father Gabriele Amorth, the Catholic priest who served for 30 years as the head exorcist of the Diocese of Rome. Its screenwriting credits proclaim as much, for starters, while a surfeit of onscreen dates and locations in the early going lend proceedings the faintest of docudrama veneers; moreover, the film is backed by the non-profit production arm of the Jesuit research university Loyola Marymount, with Loyola rector Father Edward J. Siebert among its executive producers.
Even Catholics in high places, it turns out, have a sense of humor: You needn’t wait for the “work of fiction” disclaimer in the closing credits to discern that “The Pope’s Exorcist” is ripely fantastical trash, inspired by Amorth’s work in much the same way that SunnyD is inspired by Florida oranges,...

Stars: Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper, Morfydd Clark, Ross Anderson, Jose Palma, George Somner, Anson Boon, Ami Metcalf | Written by Michael Rasmussen, Shawn Rasmussen | Directed by Alexandre Aja
Famed horror director Alexandre Aja, whose credits include The Hills Have Eyes, Horns, Piranha and Mirrors, returns to cinema screens after a three-year absence with Crawl. A creature-feature set during a category five hurricane in Florida. Crawl follows Kaya Scodelario’s Haley in a desperate state for survival with her father Dave (Barry Pepper) as they both become trapped in his basement that is flooding at an enormous pace. Only to be joined by a few hungry alligators for good measure.
Crawl is a return to form on a few levels. Namely elevating the genre from that of the dwindling and limited explosive creature feature genre that has been reappropriated for a more comedic and less cinematic fortune with features from production company The Asylum.

The rampaging fires, earthquakes and storms of disaster movies present unusual challenges for a production: On top of the normal work of creating a film’s lived-in and realistic locations, designers must build sets that the forces of nature can batter, flood and ravage into something completely different.
Take “Crawl,” in which a Category 5 hurricane devastates rural Florida and traps a woman and her father in a flooded home infested with wild alligators. Directed by Alexandre Aja and starring Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper, the Paramount release presented a very technical challenge for production designer Alan Gilmore.
“We created huge sets on soundstages that had to go from dry to wet — from a normal day in Florida to a day after a massive storm,” he says.
Water is a dynamic, unpredictable force, and it can be tough to determine just what it will do in action. “When a huge wave strikes a building,...

One of the creative minds behind the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter — supervising art director Alan Gilmore — waits atop the steps of Hogsmeade Station, enveloped in misty smoke from the Hogwarts Express, ready to deliver a behind-the-scenes tour of the new Universal Studios Hollywood attraction. The park, which officially opens today following a soft opening, is the third destination to come to life from J.K. Muggles were overjoyed this summer when a new location for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was announced at Universal Studios Hollywood. Now, that expansion project officially has an opening date -- and it's coming up a lot sooner than we thought.
USA Today reports that the new attraction, which will recreate the village of Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle, is set to open on April 17, 2016. Construction crews must have been using some serious magic, since the project will have been completed less than a year after it was first announced back in June.
But the condensed timeline doesn't mean that the park has skimped on the details. According to USA Today, there will be plenty of eye-popping "Potter" goodies throughout the attraction, including eight fully-functioning shops in the Hogsmeade attraction alone. Memorable magical businesses including Honeydukes candy store, Ollivanders Wand Shop, and Zonko's Joke Shop will all make an appearance,...

Entertainment fans have always had good reason to visit Universal Orlando: Florida's sprawling adventure park is home to immersive worlds or rides from Spider-Man, The Hulk, The Simpsons, Transformers and Jurassic Park, to name but a few.
In addition, since its 2010 opening The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has delighted visitors with its faithful recreations of enchanted school Hogwarts and the snow-clad village of Hogsmeade (a sight to behold in the southern Us state's tropical climate).
From July 8, 2014, the Harry Potter presence doubles in size with a dramatic expansion rumoured to have cost a mind-blowing sum in the region of hundreds of millions of dollars.
After all, the Potter franchise is a world-beating, global phenomenon - each book sold around 450 million copies worldwide, while the films grossed more than $7.7 billion at the box office - which sets the bar for a theme park experience very high indeed.

Taking J.K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter franchise to a whole new level, Universal Orlando is gearing up for the grand opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter—Diagon Alley.
The expansion of 2010’s Hogsmeade attraction makes the attraction twice as large with a modern-day London setting that includes Leicester Square, the Wyndham Theater, and Grimmauld Place.
Universal Orlando art director Alan Gilmore told USA Today, "We went to London and measured every building. This is an absolute raising of the bar in level of detail."
Even “Harry Potter” film series star Matthew Lewis was impressed when he previewed the park- "I've spent a lot of time on trains back home and a lot of time at King's Cross. What they've recreated just looks brilliant, absolutely spot on. I think it's going to blow people away."

Georgia Brown gets a sneak preview of the new $200m Harry Potter theme park, which opens today in Florida
First came the books, then the blockbuster films. Now Harry Potter fans can visit the theme park. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – almost six years in the making and estimated to have cost around $200m – opened to the public today in Universal's Islands of Adventure complex in Orlando, Florida.
I was there earlier this week to get a sneak preview, along with members of the cast of teh first six films: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Michael Gambon (Dumbledore) and author Jk Rowling.
At the entrance to The Wizarding World - a 20-acre area within the Islands of Adventure theme park, rather than its own separate park – visitors are welcomed through a stone arch into Hogsmeade village by a steam-blowing Hogswarts Express train.

It's no secret that I've been pretty excited about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter for quite a long time. Over on Movies Blog's sister blog, Hollywood Crush, I've been covering news about the park pretty much since the beginning, and named it the release in 2010 that we are most excited for. Butterbeer and my favorite wizard at a theme park? Yes, please.
So when Universal invited us down to get a first look at the park, it was pretty much a dream come true. I've grown up with the "Harry Potter" series and while I wouldn't consider myself a die-hard fan of the series, I hold the story pretty close to my heart.
Our tour started out with a chat with Mark Woodbury, President of Universal Orlando, in a room that featured a model of the park and conceptual drawings for the various "Harry Potter"-themed shops that Wizarding World would be featuring.

Talk about stepping on Disney's toes! Just several days after Disney announced some modest expansions to its theme parks, Universal Studios has released extensive details about its new Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction opening next spring at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida. The attraction, which is being designed, in part, by the Harry Potter movies' production designer Stuart Craig and art director Alan Gilmore, will include a mix of newly built attractions and reconfigured existing attractions from the park. The premiere new attraction is Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, “a thrilling new state-of-the-art attraction that uses entirely new technology to bring the magic, characters and stories of Harry Potter to life in ways never before experienced.” It will be located inside a newly constructed Hogwart's castle. The second major ride is called Flight of the Hippogriff, a "family" roller-coaster that simulates a hippogriff training flight over Hogwart's.
