Elle Fanning is opening up about Hulu’s cancellation of The Great and imagining what her character would be doing next.
The streamer axed the Tony McNamara-created series after three seasons. News of the cancellation came in the middle of the SAG-AFTRA strike which kept actors from sharing their thoughts. With the actors back in business, Fanning is now sharing her thoughts on social media.
“Scrolling down memory lane… I haven’t been able to properly share my thoughts after the news of The Great’s cancellation. This show has meant the world to me,” Fanning said on Instagram. “The experiences shared. The memories I’ll never forget. Tony McNamara is a certified genius. The last 3 seasons have shaped me. Through playing Catherine I discovered parts of myself I didn’t know I had. I love every crew member and cast member deeply.”

Well, this will go down as one of the most shocking cancellations ever.
Hulu has canceled the Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult comedy The Great after three seasons.
The sad news was first reported by Deadline.
Created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great followed Catherine The Great's story as "an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter," according to the official description.
"Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change."
"All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside."
News of the cancellation comes over three months on from the premiere of The Great Season 3, which unspooled all episodes on May 12.

No Huzzahs will be had today. In something of a surprise, Hulu has canceled “The Great,” the period comedy series from creator Tony McNamara that starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, IndieWire has confirmed.
The series will end after airing three seasons, with the most recent season dropping back on May 12. The show is nominated for an Emmy this year after landing acting nominations for both Fanning and Hoult in its standout second season. It’s been nominated for seven Emmys in all. The show had also been nominated for several Golden Globes, Film Independent Spirit Awards, WGA and SAG Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.
Hulu had no comment.
It’s unclear whether the show’s cancellation is related to the ongoing writers and actors strike, which has resulted in several shows being un-renewed of late, or other factors.

Hulu has canceled its period dramedy The Great after three seasons.
The news comes some three-and-a-half months after the show’s third (and now final) season premiered as a binge release in May. The series stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and explores the relationship of Russian Empress Catherine II and Emperor Peter III in the 18th century.
The show earned seven Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning the award for outstanding period costumes last year. Fanning and Hoult also earned acting nominations in 2022, and series creator Tony McNamara and director Matt Shakman scored writing and directing nods for the series’ premiere episode in 2020.
The Great was also a critical favorite, earning nearly universally positive reviews across all three of its seasons. How many people watched it, however, remains a mystery as Hulu (like most other streamers) doesn’t share much viewing data and season three did...

“The Great” will not return for a fourth season at Hulu. The streaming service canceled the period drama after three critically acclaimed seasons.
The series was created, written and executive produced by “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara, and it starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult in a kooky tale about the life of Russian empress Catherine the Great.
The third season, which dropped all episodes on May 12, followed Catherine (Fanning) and her husband Peter (Hoult) as they worked on their relationship following her staged coup to take control of Russia. Thankfully, the Season 3 finale provided some closure to Catherine’s story, as it featured her growing into her role as leader while grieving a major loss.
The reasons for the cancellation are unclear, given the show’s garnered strong fan response as well as seven Emmy nominations since debuting in 2020. The drama won the Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in...

Exclusive: Ok, this one hurts. Hulu has canceled fan favorite The Great after three seasons.
The series starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great reinvented the period drama by revisiting the life of Catherine the Great, Russia’s reigning empress from 1762 to 1796. It depicted an iconic character and her place in history through a unique prism.
The third season dropped May 12 and revolved around Catherine (Fanning) and Nicholas (Hoult) working on their marriage.
It’s unclear what made the streamer decide to cancel the comedy, which garnered positive reviews and seven Emmy nominations since launching in 2020. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in 2022, the same year that Fanning and Hoult earned their first nominations for headlining the popular series. Once Upon a One More Time will play its final Broadway performance Sept. 3.
The musical, which features the songs of Britney Spears and a storyline about fairytale princesses in search of enlightenment, began preview performances at the Marquis Theatre on May 13 and opened June 22. Spears approved the musical and suggested its initial themes. She also signed an underlying rights agreement with the show, which was notably one of the first deals Spears signed since a judge terminated her conservatorship.
The closing notice comes as the musical failed to catch on with critics and with Broadway audiences, with the show reporting capacities in the 50 percent range for the past seven weeks. In the last publicly reported week of grosses, ended Aug. 13, the musical grossed its lowest eight-performance week yet, bringing in $512,008.
Producers James. L Nederlander and Hunter Arnold said there are currently plans underway for a national tour and international productions of the show,...

When “Succession” director Andrij Parekh heard what show creator Jesse Armstrong had planned for the final season’s eighth episode, “America Decides,” he admitted to being “terrified” due to the logistics involved in creating a full-blown presidential election. For the show’s acclaimed production designer, Stephen H. Carter, the “fear was that we wouldn’t be able to pull off the scale of that in a single episode.”
Carter – a four-time Emmy nominee who was once again nominated for “Succession” this year thanks to “America Decides” – reveals to Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview that the research process that went into creating the Atn newsroom started maybe a month before the crew even had a finished script. “It was looking pretty challenging,” he says. “We pitched a control room connected to a studio set, with some hallways in between, you know, things like that. Altogether, now… Huzzah! The Great is back on our screens this week for a third season of raunchy comedy and political machinations, all set in the lavish court of Russian empress, Catherine The Great.
After season two’s cliffhanger ending, Catherine (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) are trying to make their marriage work. The fact that Peter’s now First Husband to her reign doesn’t help, despite his efforts to keep himself busy by looking after their young son and getting involved in culinary ventures.
Among the returning faces from the first two seasons are Adam Godley, as “Archie”, the conflicted leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, and Charity Wakefield as Georgina, who is simultaneously Peter’s mistress and Catherine’s close confidante. They both told us about playing two of the biggest schemers in the show and Charity described how filming in a glamorous deep bath isn...

It certainly isn’t true to how history really happened, but “The Great” is one of the most inventive, entertaining series out there right now. Billed by Hulu alternately as “an occasionally true story” and “an almost entirely untrue story,” it takes the real-life relationship between Catherine the Great and Peter III and twists it into something that makes for maddeningly watchable comedy and drama. Season 3 begins with a new reality for Catherine and Peter as they examine how their marriage can work with the empress in power and Russia’s former leader by her side, and things only get wilder and more chaotic from there.

Hit me, Britney, one more time? In 2005, the Lady of the Lake in Monty Python’s Spamalot lamented, “I’m constantly replaced by Britney Spears.” These days, a lot of composers trying to get their scores onto Broadway stages could sing the same lyric: Spears’s music burst onto Broadway in Moulin Rouge in 2019 (“Toxic” appears in a mashup alongside Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”) and five of her songs appear in the jukebox musical & Juliet, including “…Baby One More Time,” “Oops!…I Did It Again,” and “Stronger.”
All four of those songs feature in the first all-Britney musical, Once Upon a One More Time, a frivolously delightful entry into the jukebox genre. Even though recent Broadway seasons have brought pro forma biographical musicals like Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Mj, and A Beautiful Noise, there’s been far greater pleasure in shows like Moulin Rouge, & Juliet, and the delirious...

Bad Cinderella could have been the poison apple that killed off revisionist fairy tales once and for all, but Britney Spears and Once Upon A One More Time, the new Broadway musical opening tonight that brims with her hits and high spirits, has come along to deliver a happy ever after that’s as unexpected as it is enchanting. Smart, funny, splendid to look at and all with a beat you can dance to, this tribute to the Brothers Grimm, the sisters of the Second Wave and, not least, the indomitable Ms. Spears, is a delight.

“The Great” Season 3 contains some titanic shifts of character — and actors — so even though AP European History has already spoiled the broad strokes of the Hulu series, spoilers ahead.
Catherine (Elle Fanning) grieves in the last five episodes of the season, leading to an eventual, equally tragic and thrilling transformation that brings her closer to becoming a great ruler with a capital-g, capital-r. But underneath the ice — metaphorically speaking, not the literal ice-covered lake into which Peter (Nicholas Hoult) falls and drowns — showrunner Tony McNamara and casting director Dixie Chassay and her team did a lot to make sure the show always felt full even with Peter gone.
Some of this happens by keeping Hoult around, playing Peter’s double Pugachev, who rabble-rouses at the behest of Archie (Adam Godley) and then starts liking all this arousal a little too much. The show also makes strategic additions to the regulars of Catherine’s court.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Great” Season 3, including the ending.]
Peter III did not live to be 295 years old, so he was going to have die at some point. The history books are murky on what actually led to the Russian emperor’s death in 1762. The version in “The Great” Season 3 is slightly more definitive, but like so much on that Hulu show, it’s more about perception than anything else. In a spring when surprise exits for central characters has led to many discussions about what shows do about what comes after, “The Great” has become a fascinating addition to the collection. How it bid adieu and what came next in the episodes that followed all speak to the strengths of a show that shouldn’t be flying under the radar.

This article contains spoilers for season 4 episode 8 of Succession.
Succession fans all know Greg (Nicholas Braun) as the dumb yet somewhat loveable cousin of the Roy siblings, but what if his stupidity was all an act? He’s done many morally questionable things under Tom’s (Matthew Macfadyen) leadership, but it never seemed like he was doing them entirely of his own volition, but rather because of Tom’s bullying. However, after a specific scene in the episode “America Decides,” we believe that Greg may be a lot smarter and calculating than he lets on.
In this episode, the election that the series has been building to for four seasons is finally happening, but not without some bumps in the road. Likely Jeryd Mencken supporters set a Milwaukee polling place on fire, destroying many of the mail-in ballots that had yet to be counted. In order to show their support...

The third season of “The Great” was released on Hulu May 12, with Emmy nominees Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult returning as Catherine the Great and Peter III of Russia. It’s Election Day! Episode 8 of the final season of “Succession” finds the Roys and crew navigating the momentous occasion, the first that American Television Network will be covering without its late founder Logan Roy at the helm.
Though titled “America Decides,” the nail-biting hour is really about network boss Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) figuring out how to spin the night’s news for Atn’s rabid conservative audience base, all the while fighting interference from the business and partisan considerations of Roy’s children Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), Connor (Alan Ruck) and Siobhan (Sarah Snook), who also happens to be the wife Tom had an earth-scorching argument the night before.
May the best candidate win. Spoiler Alert: They won’t.

Catherine and Peter attempt to figure out a way to move forward after the events of season two in the trailer for Hulu’s The Great season three. Can Catherine actually put into effect changes that will improve the lives of the peasants? Will Catherine and Peter ever be able to trust each other? The first premiere of Succession was in 2018 at the NYC complex formerly known as the Time Warner Center. “A lot has happened in those five years. We’ve had a couple of corporate mergers, a global pandemic, a few Emmys,” said Casey Bloys, chairman-ceo of HBO and HBO Max Content at the premiere of the series fourth and final season.
HBO parent Warner Media was sold to AT&T in a deal that closed that year. The telecom giant then sold it to Discovery in 2022. At the Season 3 premiere in October of 2021 the deal to create Warner Bros. Discovery had been announced but not yet closed. “It’s been a wild ride. But we are so proud to be the home of Succession,” Bloys said taking the stage at the event at Jazz at Lincoln Center. HBO’s official trailer for Succession season four is full of plotting, backstabbing, and shifting loyalties. In other words, everything we’ve come to expect – and love – about the award-winning drama.
The trailer kicks off with Logan Roy insisting he’s accomplished so much that no one should question how he’s doing. That’s followed by Greg spying on Logan as he circles the trading floor, describing Logan’s actions to Tom on the phone as terrifyingly moseying. “It’s like if Santa Claus was a hitman,” says Greg.
The trailer also includes Kendall suggesting to his siblings that they need to fight Logan by partnering up with Sandi, Stewy, and Pierce – “death wrestling ogres.”
The final season stars Brian Cox as Logan Roy, Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy, Sarah Snook as Siobhan Roy, Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy, and Alan Ruck as Connor Roy. Matthew Macfadyen plays Tom Wambsgans,...

Succession is heading to an end.
The hit HBO drama series will come to a conclusion with its fourth season.
Creator Jesse Armstrong broke the news in an interview with The New Yorker.
The series will return for season four on Sunday March 26. The season picks up when patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) betrayed his adult kids including Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong).
He said, “There are a few different aspects. One, we could have said it as soon as I sort of decided, almost when we were writing it, which I think would be weird and perverse. We could have said it at the end of the season. I quite like that idea, creatively, because then the audience is just able to enjoy everything as it comes, without trying to figure things out, or perceiving things in a certain way once they know it’s the final season.

HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys is not opposed to a possible ‘Succession’ spinoff, but argues that it “doesn’t seem like a natural thing.”

At this point, Bob's Burgers has been on the air for over a decade, and Fox typically keeps renewing its established animated shows year after year. However, since the network no longer owns the series, they don't profit from syndication and streaming sales as they once did. The Succession audience has been patiently waiting for news about when the Roy family drama will return, following the explosive season three finale that had everyone talking.

For a refresher: The late 2021 finale ended with a gesture between Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his son-in-law Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) that signaled Tom had betrayed wife Shiv (Sarah Snook) and her siblings Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin). Beyond the united front that is Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Siobhan (Sarah Snook), and Roman (Kieran Culkin), what more could you possibly need? Thankfully, the news from HBO is that the wait is very nearly over. "Succession" is coming back with 10 new episodes of dysfunctional family drama starting Sunday, March 26.
Just over a year ago, the three Roy siblings — sans first pancake Connor (Alan Ruck) — made the very risky move to double-cross their father Logan (Brian Cox) in a desperate attempt to stop him from selling Waystar Royco. The high of seeing them all work together was very quickly squashed by their epic failure, all the more devastating because it was orchestrated by Shiv's husband, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen). So what comes next?...
