The German legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the basis of two recent horror productions. The first of these “twin films” to receive a wide release is Erlingur Thoroddsen’s take, which shares the same title as Anthony Waller’s adaptation. And although both reimaginings feature demonic updates of that famous ratcatcher, only Thoroddsen’s story appears to underscore the musical component.
The Piper finds Charlotte Hope’s (The Nun) character Mel trapped in a familiar situation: her aspirations come at a great cost, and the consequences will be harmful. Here the young composer wants a future in her orchestra ensemble as well as the means to take care of her deaf daughter (Aoibhe O’Flanagan). Stealing a concerto from the estate of her recently departed mentor (Louise Gold) seems like the only option, but once the protagonist goes through with the plan, Mel’s conductor (Julian Sands) then...

The tale of the Pied Piper has fascinated audiences for some 740 years, but will there ever be a good film about it? People keep trying and failing. This latest effort comes from Erlinger Thoroddsen and is most notable for its cast, featuring one of the last performances by the ill-fated Julian Sands and also starring Charlotte Hope, best known as Miranda from Game Of Thrones. It has big ambitions, building its story around the longstanding occult notion of using music to encode forbidden ideas, but misses the fact that whilst one of the joys of music is its sense of consequence, any successful symphony must present its audience with challenges and keep them guessing before reaching its conclusion.
There is no guesswork to be done here, in a film which takes the most obvious route right from its opening scenes, never missing a note. It opens with Katharine (Louise Gold...

“The Dark Crystal,” the family-oriented fantasy drama directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, was groundbreaking when Universal released it in 1982. Now a cult classic, it offered an original blend of Brothers Grimm-style fairy-tale magic and state-of-the-art animatronic puppetry.
Now, 37 years later, Netflix and the Jim Henson Co. revive the world dreamed up by Oz and Henson with “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” a 10-episode prequel series directed by Louis Leterrier (“Now You See Me”) that revisits planet Thra and its mysterious inhabitants via tactile design, puppetry and hand-crafted effects.
“We wanted to make sure what we were doing felt right,” says Toby Froud, design supervisor on “Age of Resistance,” which drops Aug. 30. Froud has a long history with “Dark Crystal”: His father, Brian Froud, was the acclaimed concept artist on the original film, and Froud himself starred as the baby kidnapped by David Bowie in Oz and Henson’s follow-up project,...

Netflix has shared a brand new thriller trailer for the highly anticipated series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance! The trailer offers lots of stunning and adventurous new footage from the film that is sure to get fans even more excited for what is coming!
This is a beautifully made series filled with stunning visuals. I had a chance to watch the first episode at Comic-Con this summer and I loved it! As I watched it, all those fond memories I have of watching the original movie as a kid came flooding back. Luckily we don’t have to wait much longer to watch the full series!

As if the wait wasn’t already too long, Netflix has released the first full trailer for “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” and unsurprising for fans of Jim Henson’s 1982 cult classic, it’s filled with some incredible scenes — and equally incredible puppetry.
Watch the trailer above.
Set many years before the events of the original film, “Age of Resistance” tells the story of how the damaged world of Thra came to be. You can see plenty of that in the trailer, which shows how the Skeksis, previously seen as the benign leaders of Thra, are now pushing the planet into “the darkening” due to their overuse of the energy contained in The Crystal of Truth — that’s the one that goes dark. We also see how the Gelflings unite to oppose them, with plenty of gorgeous scenery and thrills galore in the meantime.

Netflix brought “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” to Hall H on Friday at Comic-Con 2019, treating fans to a full screening of the show’s first episode. Unfortunately, the rest of you will have to wait until the show premieres next month to see it yourself, but you can tide yourself over with a new behind-the-scenes clip made especially for Sdcc.
Watch it above.
The clip mainly focuses on the creation and design of the puppetry and animatronics deployed for the series — they look incredible, in our opinion. But, toward the end, there’s a glimpse of the plot and it looks pretty epic — something about a tribe of Gelflings trying to stop something the Skeksis are doing. Sounds great, even if we know this is a prequel to the movie where we learn the Skeksis hunted Gelflings to extinction.

Netflix has unveiled the voice cast for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, its forthcoming 10-episode prequel to Jim Henson’s seminal 1982 film, and it’s stacked. Among the major bold-faced names boarding the high-profile project (which bows in 2019): Star Wars‘ Mark Hamill, Outlander‘s Caitriona Balfe, Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Andy Samberg and Game of Thrones‘ Natalie Dormer.
The primary cast, meanwhile, consists of Taron Egerton (Kingsman), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones), as Rian, Brea and Deet, the three Gelfling heroes (get a first look at the trio below).
But wait, there’s more.

Netflix's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will serve as a prequel to the 1982 fantasy classic from Jim Henson.
The Dark Crystal entered the pop culture fray as a fantastical theatrical offering during the 1982 Christmas season. Directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, featuring groundbreaking animatronics and imaginative creatures from Henson’s Creature Shop, the Tolkien-esque fantasy film earned fans, but was hardly a box office smash. However, the fandom apparently endured enough to warrant Netflix’s greenlight for offshoot series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
The 10-episode series – a prequel set many years before the events of the movie – will be directed and executive-produced by Louis Leterrier, a French helmer who’s best known from work on The Transporter and its sequel, as well as Marvel Cinematic Universe sophomore offering The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans, Now You See Me and The Brothers Grimsby.
