The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

If HBO’s “The Last of Us” wins the Special Visual Effects Emmy, it will be for pulling off the horrifying Kansas City clicker horde and bloater attack toward the end of Episode 5. That’s where Joel (Pedro Pascal), Ellie (Bella Ramsey), Henry (Lamar Johnson), and Sam (Keivonn Woodard) heroically escape the escalating battle in the cul-de-sac, in which Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey), Perry (Jeffrey Price) and her militia are attacked by hundreds of swarming clickers and the bloater: the biggest and baddest of the Cordyceps-infected victims.
Wētā FX did the creature work on the CG clickers and bloater (led by animation supervisor Dennis Yoo), in addition to the gunfire, destruction, and explosions, including the fiery sink-hole from which the creatures emerge. All told, it was close to 400 VFX shots.

Prosthetics designer Barrie Gower is nominated not once but twice this Emmy season for his work on The Last of Us and House of the Dragon. It’s a big accomplishment for the previous Emmy winner — three times for Game of Thrones and once for Stranger Things — but it’s all part of a lifelong passion. “I’m one of those annoying people who knew very early on what I wanted to do for a career, in my early teens, really,” he explains.
Gower grew up in the north of England, where his father managed a cinema. “He’d take me to press screenings and showings of films … I got to meet [animator] Ray Harryhausen when I was 4 or 5 years old. I was a big fan of the Sinbad movies, the visible stop-motion characters.”
As he became a teenager, Gower was heavily involved in art — mostly drawings and sculpture. “I came across a magazine called Fangoria,...

Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower, and composers Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Britell and Danny Elfman were among the industry heavyweights who landed Creative Arts Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning.
Four-time Oscar winner Atwood landed her second Emmy nomination in the outstanding contemporary costumes for Tim Burton’s “Wednesday.” Speaking about her work on the show and about recreating the icon Morticia Addams’ costumes, Atwood said, “We reinvented look with this silver fabric on the side, which was bonded to the black, twisted and sewn over. “The game had this really naturalistic feel to it, and that’s what we wanted to bring to this new medium,” explains Alex Wang of his work on the HBO adaptation of “The Last of Us” starring Pedro Pascal. The visual effects supervisor brought the apocalypse to life by imbuing his digital creations with a sense of realism and subtlety, which is a rarity in this genre. “We really wanted to do something that was different,” he explains. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Wang admits that with any type of apocalyptic aesthetic, it’s easy to “turn the knob to 11” with the visuals. So in order to capture the more natural look that the series required, he frequently took a step back to ask: “How can we tell the story with just 20 brush strokes?” He says that developing visuals “with intention” generally held the answers. The Last of Us Episode 5 introduced one of the most disturbing types of Infected — the child clicker. Sadly children are not immune from the horrific fate that comes from the spread of the cordyceps virus. A monstrous horde of Infected attack in episode 5, and the child clicker is somehow the most alarming.

*Warning – Spoilers ahead for The Last of Us episode five*
The Last of Us’s fifth episode concludes with a massive outbreak of infected in a Kansas City cul-de-sac.
Melanie Lynskey’s ruthless gang leader character, Kathleen, has Joel (Pedro Pascal), Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and their two accomplices Henry (Lamar Johnson) and Sam (Keivonn Woodard) trapped when a hole in the ground opens up, expelling hundreds of the monsters.
Among them is one more terrifying than the rest, an enormous Bloater – one of the most brutal enemies to face in the video game on which the series is based.
The Bloater is played by Adam Basil, a 6’6” British stuntman whose previous stunt double credits include the Beast in Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast remake.
Basil told Entertainment Weekly that he’s received a surprising amount of attention since starring as the grotesque creature.

‘The Last of Us’ Crew Was ‘Banned’ From Saying Zombie on Set: ‘We Weren’t Allowed to Say the Z Word’
Don’t even think about calling HBO’s “The Last of Us” a zombie show. Eben Bolter, the cinematographer who shot four episodes of the video game adaptation’s 10-episode first season, recently told The Credits that referring to the series as a zombie show or using the word zombie to refer to the undead characters was strictly not allowed on set.
“We weren’t allowed to say the Z word on set,” Bolter said. “It was like a banned word. They were the Infected. We weren’t a zombie show. Of course, there’s tension building and jump scares, but the show’s really about our characters; The Infected are an obstacle they have to deal with.”
“There’s a lot of things The Last of Us is not,” the cinematographer said earlier in the chat. “It’s not a cliché zombie movie, it’s not Hollywood backlit where everyone’s close-up is perfect.

“Elvis” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 11 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and hairstyling but lost the special effects race to one of its Oscar rivals, “The Whale.” Another Oscar contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” won contemporary makeup.
These wins boost the odds of one of these three films prevailing at the Academy Awards. Last year marked the only time in the nine-year history of these guild honors that one of its winners had not gone on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. While “Coming 2 America” won three awards here, it was “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” that won over academy voters. That biopic had lost both period/character guild awards (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to “Coming 2 America.

Elvis topped the feature competition at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (IATSE Local 706), winning a pair of awards for period make-up and period hair styling.
Accepting with the team, Shane Thomas said of the team’s challenge to creating Elvis Presley, “We wanted to represent and respect, but not impersonate.” He also saluted director Baz Luhrmann’s “unwavering commitment” to filmmaking.
Also on Saturday at The Beverly Hilton, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever collected the award for contemporary hair styling. Department head Camille Friend dedicated the award to the late Chadwick Boseman.
Angela Bassett – who is Oscar-nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever – received the Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award during the ceremony. Bassett called the Guild members the “unsung heroes of filmmaking” as she accepted the award. “For any show, there is a team who works long and hard to help us bring to life the character.

This post contains spoilers for episode 5 of "The Last of Us."
Plenty of awful things happen in episode 5 of "The Last Of Us": impossible decisions are made, lives are unfairly lost and hopeful futures are stolen. Also, a new, terrifying creature enters the horror pantheon by showing us that yes, the mushroom zombies are capable of being even scarier than we originally thought.
Believe it or not, the monstrous Mvp of the episode is not the big boy Bloater who literally rips a man's head off — it's so much worse than that. It's a child clicker who crawls through a window, scares the hell out of Ellie, and later, saves her life by mauling a woman to death. This little girl, with her flowered head and adorable "Blue's Clues" shirt, is absolutely haunting. In the official companion podcast for "The Last of Us," series co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann...

"The Last of Us" is a story full of very human monsters. The series' post-apocalyptic landscape is crawling with smugglers, killers, power-hungry people, and various bad guys who have been hardened by their need to survive. It's easy to forget, then, that the story is also about cool mushroom zombies whose heads turn into fungus after their hosts fall prey to a fast-moving infection that also turns them rabid.
The fifth episode of "The Last of Us" didn't forget, though. All of the bellyachers who won't stop tweeting "where are all the zombies?" finally have their answer, because it turns out a whole busload of them were all hanging out beneath the streets of Kansas City. Among them? A bloater, one of the video game's most instantly recognizable images. The massive, strong monster came to life via a mix of practical effects, live performance, and VFX in the show, with...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Episode 5 of “The Last of Us,” now streaming on HBO Max.
If you thought the clickers from “The Last of Us” were scary, think again.
The massive, lumbering bloater is one of the most fearsome enemies in the original “The Last of Us” video game. Nearly impenetrable fungi have sprouted from every inch of its gargantuan frame after years of Cordyceps infection, and the creature has gained enough strength to rip the head clean off an unsuspecting apocalypse survivor. In Episode 5 of HBO’s “The Last Us” series, the bloater makes a grand, deadly entrance, erupting from a collapsed underground tunnel with a horde of clickers in its wake.
Barrie Gower, prosthetics designer on “The Last of Us,” birthed the bloater for its live-action debut. The four-time Emmy winner is a master at creating grotesque special effects and monsters; he’s the architect behind Vecna on “Stranger Things,...

Two of the five Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — “The Batman” and “Elvis” — contend in three categories apiece at the guild awards on Feb. 11. Another contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has a pair of bids while “The Whale” has a single nomination. The fifth Oscar contender, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards.
Last year marked the first time in the nine-year history of these guild awards that the eventual Oscar winner was shut out here first. “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” lost both period/character races (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to another Oscar contender, “Coming 2 America.” The other two Oscar nominees — “House of Gucci” and “Dune” — were also overlooked by the guild despite three and two bids respectively.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations for its awards on the eve of academy members starting to vote. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, seven are vying for these precursor prizes.
“The Batman” and “Elvis” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Amsterdam,” “Babylon,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Blonde” earned two each; and and “The Whale” has one.
Three films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Crimes of the Future” and “Emancipation” — were snubbed by the guild.
Conversely, several of the Muahs favorites — “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Menu,” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

HBO’s highly anticipated “The Last of Us” TV series, based on the popular PlayStation video game, will debut on Jan. 15, 2023, at 9 p.m. Et/Pt, the company confirmed Wednesday. Season 1 will consist of nine episodes.
The official date announcement comes after eagle-eyed HBO Max users spotted an accidental leak on the streaming site Tuesday morning.
“The Last of Us” stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, two survivors in a post-apocalyptic America overrun by zombie-like monsters called clickers. A deadly disease called the cordyceps fungus has ravaged the world and turned its victims into shambling husks with mushroom-like spores growing from their bodies. Just like the original video game, Joel must travel across the country with Ellie on an important mission, all while dodging clickers, bandits and all sorts of danger.

Viewers of "House of the Dragon" have watched the alarming decline of King Viserys (Paddy Considine) over the course of the first season. With the show's time jumps, there is a striking visual progression as disease takes hold and breaks down the doomed King's body. Innocuous scars here and there eventually turn Viserys into a walking corpse of man, with missing limbs and the complete destruction of one side of his face.
To create the various stages of Viserys' wasting disease, prosthetics designer Barry Gower and his team worked hard researching and then developing the evolving looks we see onscreen. In an interview with Variety, Gower breaks down every single step in how they tackled this ambitious project. First up was the research, which involved looking into various real-life diseases to see what to pull from:

Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you’ve seen the first nine episodes of “House of the Dragon” on HBO.
Well before he died in Episode 8 of “House of the Dragon,” Paddy Considine’s King Viserys Targaryen (may he rest in peace) was falling apart. Literally — his body and face were crumbling.
Viserys’ deterioration happened slowly. First, it was a few festering cuts from sitting on the Iron Throne, then it was some missing fingers. After the 10-year time jump in Episode 6, he lost an entire arm. Finally, in Episode 8, he was missing an eye and half of his face, most of his hair had fallen out and he looked more like a walking skeleton than the ruling Targaryen king.

Miguel Sapochinik, the co-showrunner and director of the streaming series ‘House of the Dragon’, recently opened up on the mysterious disease which visibly took away King Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) physical appearance and strength, leaving him wretched and decayed in the last episode of the show.
According to Miguel Sapochinik, King Viserys’ decay over time was because of the cut on his finger from the Iron Throne. “I thought it would be interesting that anybody who is cut by the throne gets this disease. It’s kind of leprosy, and it would be interesting to see Viserys over time slowly deteriorate to decay,a said Sapochinik.”
From thicker hair and a fuller face to a widening hairline and changing colour palette of his skin, Paddy Considine pulled off closely six to seven looks for King Viserys from episode one to his demise in episode eight.

The Emmys often award the same shows over and over again, and, well, they did that again tonight by giving Best Comedy Series to last year’s winner “Ted Lasso” and Best Drama Series to the winner two years ago, “Succession.” But it wasn’t a sweep of the Comedy and Drama categories at the 74th Prime Emmy Awards by those two shows by any means.
In fact, the Emmys spread the wealth quite a bit: in the Comedy categories, “Ted Lasso” indeed won four Emmys: for Lead Actor Jason Sudeikis, Supporting Actor Brett Goldstein, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, as well as the top prize. But “Abbott Elementary” also won two major prizes: Sheryl Lee Ralph for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and for Best Writing for a Comedy Series.

The ambitious fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things involved developing the look and sound of its threatening, vine-laden antagonist Vecna. Creator-showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer drew early inspiration for the character from Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series and Pinhead from the Hellraiser franchise, says Michael Maher Jr., one of three VFX supervisors from the Emmy-nominated effects team. In all, their work involved a staggering 4,400 VFX shots created by nearly 30 effects vendors including Dneg, Digital Domain, Rodeo FX, Lola and Important Looking Pirates, plus Scanline, which Netflix acquired in November.

Stranger Things earned 13 Emmy nominations this season, including Outstanding Drama Series, thanks to the unsung heroes of the show—the below-the-line departments who put in the tireless effort to create the “surreal madness” of the series. From ‘de-aging’ Millie Bobbie Brown to building Vecna and his lair in the Upside Down, the collaboration of the craft departments continues to bring the series to new heights. Here, some of the Emmy-nominated craft department heads give insight into the most important aspects of this season.
Eleven
One of the most difficult tasks this season was de-aging Eleven for flashback scenes. “Before shooting we explored just about every option, including deepfake, full CG head replacement, smoothing and warping,” says VFX supervisor Michael Maher Jr. “Luckily, our experienced friends at Lola Visual Effects agreed to take on the work and help us out. They arranged a shoot with a special, proprietary camera and lighting rig called an egg.

On the morning they opened the writers room for the fifth and final season of the Netflix series Stranger Things, Emmy-nominated creators Matt & Ross Duffer teamed with prosthetics designer Barrie Gower to relive for Deadline Contenders the events of Season 4.
Stranger Things got 13 Emmy nominations for a season that featured shocking cast deaths and reveals, a detour to a Russian prison and a messy climax that sets up a final battle between the teens of Hawkins, Indiana, and the psychopath Vecna. Being vanquished by Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) when he was a sociopath hospital orderly (Jamie Campbell Bower), the series villain became the slimy, tentacled Vecna, who secretly commanded the creatures that tormented the Stranger Things characters through the series in the alternate universe they called the Upside Down. It wasn’t until late in Season 4 that the Duffers finally revealed their supervillain and set the stakes for the final...

“When something sonically is written into a script and it’s baked in… it just gives you sort of a launching point, or a jumping off point, to really do something special,” explains “Stranger Things” sound designer Craig Henighan. He is Emmy-nominated for both sound editing and sound mixing for Season 4 of the hit Netflix series, and picked up a third nomination for the animated show “Love, Death, & Robots.” Henighan praises the way “Stranger Things” creators The Duffer Brothers have incorporated sound into their scripts at early stages, providing the designer with a rich creative playground.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The most recognizable sound effect from Season 4 is the introduction of a haunting grandfather clock which is tied to the machinations of the villain Vecna. Knowing the effect was vital to the story, Henighan began with the ticking of a standard Westminster grandfather clock and asked himself...

“What was most exciting was knowing that we were going to get to visit the wider world,” explains “Stranger Things production designer Chris Trujillo on Season 4’s immense scope. “It was a really nice change.” The latest season goes beyond the familiar locales to explore the deep interiors of a secret lab, a brutalist Russian prison, and a haunted house that exists across worlds. The massive undertaking earned the designer an Emmy nomination for Best Production Design of a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The scope of Trujillo’s work is perhaps best embodied in the Creel House, home to the new series villain Vecna. “The Creel house existed in a past, pristine state. And then it existed in a dilapidated state in the Right Side Up. Then it also existed in the Upside Down. Then it also had an iteration where it was...

“Season 4 is not nine episodes to us,” explains “Stranger Things” editor Dean Zimmerman of the super-sized entry, “it’s just one big, gigantic, twelve and a half hour movie.” Zimmerman is Emmy nominated for Best Single-Camera Picture Editing alongside Casey Cichocki for the episode “Chapter Four: Dear Billy.” Cichocki concurs with the assessment that the pair focused on the season as a whole, noting “you might be cutting things for four episodes downstream.” But, “Dear Billy” serves as a prime example of the approach this duo used for the entire story, which aimed to balance the epic scope with intimate emotion. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Zimmerman is sure that his existing shorthand with “Dear Billy” director Shawn Levy contributed to a smooth process for the episode. “We’re basically just one hivemind,” suggests the editor, “We both wear our hearts on our sleeve.” A penchant for leaning into...

Prosthetic makeup artists Kazu Hiro and Barrie Gower and editor Tatiana S. Riegel were among the industry heavyweights who landed Creative Arts Emmy nominations on Tuesday morning.
Two-time Oscar winner Hiro landed an Outstanding Prosthetics Emmy nomination for his transformation of Sean Penn in Starz’s “Gaslit.” Hiro often spent up to two and a half hours a day transforming Penn into Attorney General John Mitchell.
Gower, a three-time Emmy winner for “Game of Thrones,” served as Special Makeup Effects Department Head on “Stranger Things” and also scored an Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup nomination.
Gower was the mastermind behind creating the prosthetics for the show’s villain, Vecna, played by Jamie Campbell Bower. The costume ended up being separated into about 24 or 25 different pieces, made from foam latex or silicone rubber material: A top of head piece, a chin appliance, a five kilogram shoulder piece, chest and back appliances, three separate...

This article contains spoilers for the Stranger Things season 4 finale.
Stranger Things season 4 concluded with many questions lingering. Where exactly is Max? How can Vecna be defeated? And when can we expect Will to share his secret with Mike? One question that’s already been definitively answered, however, is: will we get a Stranger Things season 5?
The good news is that we will absolutely see a fifth season of Stranger Things. The bad news is that it will be the show’s last. Back in February 2022 when Netflix announced the release dates of season 4’s two volumes, the streamer also announced that the show was receiving a fifth and final season. The show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, wrote a letter to fans to accompany the announcement. It read, in part:
“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted...

[Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for “Stranger Things 4: Vol. 2.”]
The horror for “Stranger Things 4” has truly been turned up to Eleven.
Just ask Millie Bobby Brown, who plays gifted teen Eleven. According to co-star Jamie Campbell Bower, Brown couldn’t even look at season villain Vecna, played by Bower.
“They brought her up into a position where she’s bound. I walked up to her [as Vecna] and she burst into tears,” Bower told Variety. “She wouldn’t look at me and she was visibly just disgusted by the whole thing.”
However, Brown calmed down after she knew it was Bower under the prosthetics.
“After she cried and I made it obvious that she knew it was me, one of the things she said was that, ‘I knew it was you when I could smell cigarettes,’ because I’m a smoker,” Bower added.
Vecna’s origins are uncovered during “Stranger Things 4: Vol. 2,” now streaming. “Stranger Things” prosthetics designer Barrie Gower...
