Long before Jigsaw and Annabelle, Ghostface and Samara—going back to even before Freddy and Jason—there were the Universal Monsters. These were the creatures and character designs who were so iconic that they defined what the horror genre was to most moviegoers during the earliest decades of talking pictures. Primarily released in two film cycles by Universal Pictures across the 1930s and ‘40s (plus a few outliers on both sides of this), the legacy of these films and the people who made them endures still. It echoes in Halloween costumes and TV specials, merchandise toys and candies, it’s even informing recent Blumhouse films and Netflix’s Wednesday. Right now, you can go to any Universal theme park and meet the Monsters as un-goodwill ambassadors at “Halloween Horror Nights.”

There is a Taylor Sheridan aesthetic. The "Sicario" writer and "Yellowstone" creator is a poet laureate of the American West, a writer who reframes its ancient archetypes for modern audiences by placing emotion first. "Hell and High Water" sweepingly considers the folk hero power of modern-day outlaws. "Those Who Wish Me Dead" is a classic white-hat-vs.-black-hat yarn set in the daredevil world of smoke jumpers. Then, there's "Yellowstone." The Paramount+ smash is an unabashedly melodramatic soap opera, a dime-store novel for the small screen. Sheridan's show disguises its seedier impulses through grit and self-seriousness. The "Yellowstone" discourse has revolved around it being immensely popular yet widely unknown. So are dime-store novels. So are the works of Taylor Sheridan. It's all part of the plan.
If you love "Yellowstone" or any of its many genre elements, here are 16 shows you can watch next that range from neo-westerns to classic soaps.

With the ceremony now behind us, let’s take a look back at a handful of the best and worst acceptance speeches from the 2018 Emmys. And check out the complete list of winners here.

What a win for Jeff Daniels! During tonight's 2018 Emmys inside the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, the star took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his performance in Godless. Kit Harington and Constance Wu presented the coveted honor to the Hollywood veteran for his role leading role as ruthless outlaw Frank Griffin, which marked his fifth Emmy nomination and second win. "Little tip for you young actors," Daniels quipped during his acceptance speech, "When they call and say can you ride a horse, don't lie. You will find on day one you're in the Kentucky Derby." In between thanking those who...

It’s a good year for Jeff Daniels at the Emmys. The veteran actor picked up two bids this year, one for Best Movie/Mini Actor for “The Looming Tower” and another for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor for “Godless.” In the latter, Daniels plays against type as a ruthless killer in the Old West. This is the first time he’s been in the Emmy race since his three consecutive Best Drama Actor nominations for “The Newsroom” (2013-2015), the first of which brought him a victory.
Daniels submitted for Emmy consideration the first episode of “Godless,” titled “An Incident at Creede.” In it, Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) flees a violent outlaw gang led by his surrogate father, Frank Griffin (Daniels), who lost an arm from a gunshot wound delivered by the runaway. Roy ends up in the town of La Belle, which is inhabited almost entirely by women...

Retro true-crime tales dominate this year’s Emmy nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie… but which actor truly deserves the award?
Three of the category’s seven nominees hail from FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story: Édgar Ramírez, as the titular fashion designer; Ricky Martin, as Versace’s longtime partner Antonio D’Amico; and Finn Wittrock (who scored a nod in this category back in 2015 for American Horror Story: Freak Show), as murder victim Jeffrey Trail. Godless marks Scott Frank’s first foray into the western genre. One could argue that his screenplay for Logan was western-adjacent, but Godless is a tried and true western complete with outlaws, gunfights, a town tragedy, a drifter and horses — an animal that executive producer Steven Soderbergh fears.
Created and written by Frank, the seven-part limited series — which was originally conceived as a feature film — reunites the Out of Sight writer with director Soderbergh and executive producer Casey Silver. Hitting the beats of a traditional western, Godless follows criminal Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels) and his gang of menacing outlaws as they set out on a mission of revenge against Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), a son-like protégé who betrayed them. While on the Run from Frank and his goons, Roy finds refuge with tough-as-nails Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery) in the isolated mining town of La Belle which is populated by mostly women.

A version of this story about Jeff Daniels first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Among the list of 2018 performers with nominations for two different shows, Jeff Daniels stands out for an elegant piece of Emmy symmetry: He was nominated for playing a good guy in one miniseries, “The Looming Tower,” and a bad guy in another, “Godless.”
At least, that’s the easy shorthand for his characters, FBI counterterrorism chief John O’Neill in the former show and brutal Wild West outlaw Frank Griffin in the latter.
Of course, Daniels doesn’t exactly see it as being so cut-and-dried. “The characters don’t see it that way, and that’s the key,” he said. “So you play the good and the bad, the strengths and the weaknesses. You figure out how they think, and make that their normal.”

Jeff Daniels could be taking it easy. The Emmy Award-winning, and Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Tony Award-nominated actor could be still coasting on the success of his turn as the lead of Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom, which came to an end in 2014, and which felt like the gilded cherry atop a career cake that has encompassed everything from The Purple Rose of Cairo to Dumb and Dumber, The Hours, Good Night, and Good Luck and The Squid and the Whale.

When Carlos Rafael Rivera was an aspiring film composer and Scott Frank’s guitar teacher in 2005, the writer-director shared the Western script he was working on as a feature, and they discussed the score. “He read me a very dark scene with this evil Frank Griffin reading by the fireside, and we discussed the moment being built around C major,” he said. “And that was it.”
Later, after Rivera scored Frank’s 2014 feature “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” Rivera prepared to score that feature in the form of a seven-part Netflix mini-series, “Godless” — and decided the best score for the scene was none at all. “When that scene came up, and I was actually writing to picture, I wrote this music that had a Bernard Herrmann influence,” he said. “We ended up using no music because the performance was so good by Jeff Daniels.”

Merritt Wever has been in many, many fan favorite shows and films—The Good Wife, New Girl, Birdman, The Walking Dead, and Nurse Jackie, for which she won an Emmy—but it perhaps wasn’t until Scott Frank’s Netflix Western Godless that we’ve seen a different side to her work; one that allowed her to really show a new side to her multi-faceted acting chops.
The Godless action centers around the town of La Belle, which is mostly governed by women, following a massacre that killed the majority of men. As Mary Agnes, Wever brings a ballsy, outspoken ‘cool’ to the cast of characters, as she refuses to conform to gender norms, nor carry around her dead husband’s last name “like a bucket of water”. The right roles can often be an embarrassment of riches for an actor and, no, “roles” wasn’t a misprint. In 2017 alone, there were eight actors who had multiple Emmy nominations for their work in front of the camera. And this season appears to be no different. “Godless” is the smart western that nobody wanted when it was a two-hour movie. However, once it became a limited series, Netflix jumped at the opportunity.

Frank has long been known as a hot screenwriter, in a career that stretches from Kenneth Branagh’s “Dead Again” in 1991 to Oscar-nominated turns for Steven Soderbergh’s 1998 “Out of Sight” and last year’s “Logan.” However, he never expected to become the showrunner of a sprawling TV series.
“I could watch eight movies all day for the price of a ticket and candy,” said Frank. As a kid growing up in northern California in the 1960s, his mom would drop him off at the theater for marathon movie sessions. That’s where he discovered Sergio Leone...

Minor Spoilers
At a pivotal juncture during the Fathers & Sons episode of Godless (2017), the camera tracks into a pink ribbon tied on the back of young woman’s hair; a woman who is suffering from the onset symptoms of smallpox and unlikely to find recovery. Later in the episode we pan across dozens of freshly dug but unnamed graves each with it’s own crucifix. We don’t see the woman again, but on one of the crucifixes is tied a pink ribbon. Such is the power of even the slightest costume and accessory details in Godless, the narrative is informed by their very presence.
Costume designer for Godless was Betsy Heimann. Perhaps best known for costuming Reservoir Dogs (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994) and Almost Famous (2000), she is extremely well respected in the industry. Godless is some of Heimann’s most complete work yet. The western era in question, 1884 in Colorado, is well documented historically.

If you're looking for a new show to binge-watch over the holiday break, we highly recommend Godless.
Set in the 1880s, the limited, seven-episode Netflix series puts an interesting twist on the Western genre, bringing the women to the forefront and detailing the hardships Americans faced at the time in an original way. Featuring breathtaking cinematography and truly fascinating characters like crazed outlaw Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels) and his protege turned enemy, Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), it's hard not to find yourself enamored in the show from beginning to end… even if you're not typically a fan of Westerns.
Godless highlights the town of La Belle, New Mexico, whose male population was almost completely wiped out by a mining disaster, leaving the ladies in charge to fend for themselves and their families. Newcomer Audrey Moore, who portrays Sarah Doyle, tells Et it was "a dream" to pay homage to the Western frontier women, and be a part...

Scott Frank first conceived of “Godless” because he loved the Western genre. In an interview with IndieWire, he said, “It’s the romance of living in that time, everything from the horses to the guns. There’s a very romantic notion, the kind of surviving through all of that and living out there in those days. A lot of people look back on that and wish we were sort of there again, in many ways.”
“It’s not just the negative aspects, like the violence and sort of the being caught out in the elements. All of that are certainly part of it, but it’s also just the quiet, giant, empty spaces that we don’t have anymore, or we certainly don’t experience every day anymore.”

Godless is a western that was released on November 22 on Netflix. In total, the limited series consists of seven episodes, which are centered around the bitter rivalry between the ex-outlaw Roy Goode and his one-time partner Frank Griffin. Said relationship is complicated by the fact that the former saw the latter as a paternal figure of sorts, having been raised by said individual when he was orphaned as a child. Such was the state of things until Roy became disgusted with what Griffin was doing, thus resulting in their current state of hostility. Besides the bitter rivalry between Roy

The Old West was a lawless place, where nothing was certain except for dust and hardship. On Netflix’s limited series “Godless,” outlaw Frank Griffin was certain about one thing though: how he wasn’t going to die.
“This ain’t my death,” he says over and over again like a mantra. Whether he has a noose around his neck or a shotgun pointed at his heart, he holds onto that unshakeable belief. “This ain’t my death. I’ve seen my death; this ain’t it.”
Jeff Daniels, who portrays Frank Griffin, spoke to IndieWire about that infamous line. “If it were a song, it’d be a good hook,” he said. “You preface that with, ‘Is this it? No, it’s not it. This ain’t my death. I just checked. Didn’t get the feeling that this was it.’ And that’s kind of all he goes on.

In the gun-slinging Old West of Netflix’s new six-part series Godless, the most piercing weapon a man could wield is the empty promise of religion. Settlers and profit-seekers might believe in manifest destiny, but in a land ruled by the ruthless, prayers will go unanswered. Absent a higher power, the townsfolk of Godless live in fear of a figure who uses blunt intimidation to his advantage. And there’s no one more up for the task than Jeff Daniels, who plays a gruff, one-armed madman named Frank Griffin.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the Netflix limited series, “Godless.” For a spoiler-free review, please click here.]
All in all, “Godless” is a relatively straightforward western — and proud of it. Scott Frank’s limited series wears its emotions on its dirty, tattered sleeve, and the nearly feature-length finale wraps things up in a way that’s satisfying in the specifics more so than any big surprises.
Genre staples are met almost as though they’re being checked off a list. There’s a betrayal. There’s a massacre outside of town. There’s a massive shootout in town. There’s a quickdraw duel between good and evil. There are deaths. There are goodbyes. There’s hope.
In comforting fashion, Frank’s western abides by the formulas and format of the classics and draws to mind the great miniseries of yesteryear (namely, “Lonesome Dove”). But what elevates “Godless” beyond imitation are its subtle yet strong modern touches.

Michelle Dockery is proving to be quite the chameleon on television.
After earning cred on the British stage in plays like Pygmalion and Burnt by the Sun, Dockery became a breakout star of the ensemble upstairs-downstairs drama, Downton Abbey, for her portrayal of Lady Mary Crawley. She embodied the snobbish yet endearing persona of an aristocratic daughter who eventually learns that her privileged life must change with the evolving times. By the end of the show's six-season run, Mary had become one of the show’s most likeable characters, having navigated unexpected hardships along the way.
In the years since the beloved series ended, the actress has been shedding the pomp and circumstance and corsets of Mary’s world for that of Good Behavior. Snakes, a bloody violin, and a whole lot of dust are just some of the telling images found in the “Godless” opening titles. The highly anticipated Netflix series, which stars an alarmingly rugged Jeff Daniels, is set to premiere on Wednesday, November 22, and the gorgeous title sequence forces its Western themes to shine, as “Godless” breaks down the deeply harmful consequences of war.
Composer Carlos Rafael Rivera layered a silky yet haunting string melody over the gritty images created by Method Studios, giving the Netflix drama a flair reminiscent of its premium channel competitors. An obscene amount of gun violence is expected and is called upon throughout the minute-long introduction, along with pictures of death, tough women, and political rivalry. The sequence was executive produced by Angela Lupo and produced by Emily Schaeberle, with Jonn Likens serving as creative director.

Is it us, or does Netflix seem to be making a concerted bid to straight-up own November? It's launching a pair of expensive-looking period-set miniseries, a long-anticipated Marvel spin-off, a sophomore run for one of the best TV cult comedies of the past 10 years and their big-league awards contender film of the year. (Consider this a warning shot for 2018, during which Netflix will spend a projected $8 billion on new original content.) Meanwhile, Hulu's getting in the Marvel business as well as sending Josh Hutcherson back in time, while Amazon unveils...

It's not often I use the words "Western" and "awesome" in a sentence together, but that's mostly because I feel as though the genre is played out. That appears to be changing though, as Netflix has a new limited series by the name of Godless that looks to be a twist on the traditional Western plotlines:
Godless follows the fates of Frank Griffin and his murderous gang... of Roy Goode, the member who turned against them… and of La Belle, the town full of women who must defend themselves when they get caught in the crossfire. Welcome to Godless country.
As we've reported previously, this is a Steven Soderbergh project that features some real top tier talent like Jeff Bridges, Jack O'Connell, and Michelle Dockery. Netflix has released a stunning first trailer for their upcoming seven-part western series Godless. The series comes from producer Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven, Logan Lucky) and director Scott Frank (A Walk Among the Tombstones). It also has a fantastic cast that includes Jack O’Connell, Michelle Dockery, and Jeff Daniels.
The trailer offers up a collection of intriguing visuals as a narrator says:
"Tis a fearful thing to love what death can touch. The love, the hope, the dream, to be, to lose. For your life is lived in me. To remember this brings painful joy. Tis a human thing to love what death has touched."
As far as the story goes, the only other thing we have to go off of is this synopsis:
Frank Griffin, an outlaw terrorizing the 1880s American West, hunts down Roy Goode, his partner turned enemy. Roy hides out at a ranch as Frank's...

Netflix’s new seven-part limited series, starring Jack O’Connell, Michelle Dockery and Jeff Daniels, follows outlaw Frank Griffin as he hunts down Roy Goode, his partner-turned-enemy in the 1880s American West. The teaser trailer features a lot of wide open spaces you’d expect from a Western, but those beautiful shots are juxtaposed with more disturbing images, like a baby playing with a rattlesnake and a train crash.
