The following article contains major spoilers for Cobweb.
When most of us think of fairy tales, we imagine singing princesses, magical monsters and enchanted castles. We’ve been conditioned by Disney to view these stories as life lessons or tales of empowerment, but the origin of the art form is much darker. A generalized type of folklore usually containing some sort of magical element, fairy tales have been passed down by oral tradition, changing over the years to reflect the time period. The term was first coined by Madame D’Aulnoy in her 1697 collection of French folklore, Les Contes des fées, but the tales most of us are familiar with come from the collections of the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.
First published in 1812, the stories collected for Children’s and Household Tales were much darker than the versions we see brought to life in Disney animated classics. For example, the...

Though he was making a sequel to a film that was already spun off from a franchise, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” director Joel Crawford wasn’t terribly concerned with following up on a larger legacy. He knew he wanted to maintain the “elevated comedy” — especially the adult “jokes that would go over kids’ heads” — from the “Shrek” movies and 2011’s “Puss in Boots.” Visually, however, Crawford felt that this tale was ready to move beyond computer animation “that looked photoreal.”
“It’s crazy, telling the next chapter after so long, but we wanted to free ourselves,” he says. “We had the opportunity to go into new territory: this idea of being dropped into a fairy tale. You can see the brushstrokes and it looks as if you’re in a moving painting.”
But the new art style of “The Last Wish” is about more than just intensifying the...

The series Phantoms Among Us: The Films of Christian Petzold starts on Mubi on May 13, 2021 in many countries.Sooner or later, most interviews with Christian Petzold recur to literature as a pool of inspiration, the visceral experience of books that he synthesizes into on screen narratives. Thickening his films with references, he carefully constructs audacious architectures of ideas and aesthetic impressions, so that a “great desire for cinema” fuses with the legacy of his teacher, Harun Farocki, well known for his documentaries and essay films. Petzold’s “Spielfilme” can thus have an intellectual bent that reflects on “concepts [...] in such a way that they support one another, that each becomes articulated through its configuration with the others,” as Adorno wrote about the Essay as Form. Disparate elements, he described enigmatically, “crystallize as a configuration of their motion,” but do not come across as rigidly discursive. However, the depth suggested by...

The amount of literary content German authors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were able to publish during the early to mid-19th century has given Hollywood a seemingly bottomless trove of imaginative narratives to pull from. Inspiration from these more than 200 fairy tales was used, for example, to produce six seasons of the NBC fantasy police procedural “Grimm.”
A prolific writer himself, late English novelist and satirist Terry Pratchett may not be as referenced in the mainstream film and TV industry as much as the Brothers Grimm, but with 41 books in his flat-planet “Discworld” series alone, there’s plenty for BBC America to borrow and re-envision, including its own fantasy cop show, “The Watch.” As a cyberpunk interpretation of Pratchett’s original text, however, the new series likely won’t create many more fans of mythical storytelling. In fact, the show’s generic worldbuilding, one-dimensional characterizations and lack of consistent wit...

Fairy tales are often far more sinister than their reputation gives them credit for, and this new trailer released for the upcoming Gretel & Hansel looks to be maintaining that tradition by diving directly into the darkness of the medieval Black Forest.
The story is one of the most famous of the assortment collected by academics Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, seeing a brother and sister get lost in the woods after their trail of breadcrumbs leading back home is eaten by birds. They stumble upon a building made of bread, cake and sugar – most often referred to as a gingerbread house – wherein lives a witch who plans to fatten them up and eat them.
This version comes courtesy of Osgood Perkins, director of the underrated and sinister I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and stars Sophia Lillis (It: Chapter One) as the eponymous lost girl and Alice Krige as the witch.

The long road between what inspired “Sacred Lies” and its less-than-inspiring final version is paved with tons of enticing connections. It all began with Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s “The Handless Maiden,” whose Brothers Grimm fairy tale became Stephanie Oakes’ teen lit novel, “The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly.” The story of a young woman who escapes a cult — and just so happens to be mysteriously missing her hands — proved enticing to producer and showrunner Raelle Tucker, whose family was part of the Rajneesh movement during the 1970s — the same cult depicted in Netflix’s Emmy-nominated docuseries “Wild Wild Country.”

An orchestra quickly tunes up, and then brief silence before the music begins. The film opens with the image of a closed red curtain, some nameless theater, a bit of symbolism that signifies that this particular theater is in fact all theaters, as this film is meant for any and all audiences familiar with the tale of Snow White. Director and writer Pablo Berger is, by way of mis-en-scene, giving you a proper invitation to his particular world, and it would be a shame to pass it up.
Blancanieves is a stunner, at times alarmingly beautiful. It retains enough of the Grimm tale to feel familiar, but finds an altogether original way to interpret the material. Heartfelt and heartbreaking, this film is a celebration of cinema, of Spain, and of the human spirit.

In 1812, the first edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales — a folklore collection meticulously assembled by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm — was published in Germany. Two centuries later, the Grimm brothers’ work has had an indelible effect on pop culture, inspiring everything from countless animated films to countless rags-to-riches romances. (“Cinderella” is the original romantic comedy, plus or minus a few foot mutilations and eyes being pecked out by pigeons.)

• James Franco continues to provide evidence that he lives in a world where there are more than 24 hours in a day. According to Deadline, the crazy busy thespian has added "The Grace That Keeps This World" to his insane schedule, a family drama co-starring Brit Marling and Glenn Close that follows a father and his sons as they prepare for the upcoming hunting season.
• Michelle Williams, whom we haven't seen on the big screen since "My Week With Marilyn," is in talks to star in "Suite Francaise" for English director Saul Dibb ("The Duchess"). Williams would be playing, according to Variety, "a spirited young woman in occupied France who falls for a German officer and must choose between love and her country." She'll probably find a way to choose both.

“Mirror Mirror” is like the big-budget Broadway show that you’re forced to see when your parents are in town. The costumes are exquisite, the staging quite grand, the performances typically arch, and while it flits by you it’s easy to be entertained and occasionally tickled (even if you wince more than once during its intermission-free running time because of its sweetness and attempts at relevant hipness). But once it’s over and the house lights have gone up and your parents have returned to Wahoo, Nebraska, you’ll never, ever think of it again. For a movie based in the primordial world of fairy tales, “Mirror Mirror” is remarkably forgettable.
Of the two movies based on German academics Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s immortal fairy tale (the other being this summer’s “Snow White and the Huntsman”), “Mirror Mirror” has taken the decidedly lighter approach much in the...

Armie Hammer as Prince Charming in the Snow White movie Armie Hammer may or may not get to play opposite Johnny Depp in Gore Verbinski's one-trillion-dollar version of The Lone Ranger. But Hammer, one of the stars in David Fincher's Academy Award-nominated The Social Network, can already add the role of Prince Charming to his resume. In this still nameless Snow White project, Hammer is joined by Lily Collins as Snow White and a bosomy Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Directed by Tarsem Singh, from a screenplay by Jason Keller and Melisa Wallack, itself adapted from one of Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm's tales (themselves adaptations of age-old European folk stories), the Roberts-Collins Snow White movie also features Nathan Lane, Sean Bean, Mare Winningham, and Michael Lerner. Singh's Snow White project comes out via Relativity Media on March 16, a few months ahead of Universal Pictures' Snow White and the Huntsman,...

Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Lily Collins Snow White Julia Roberts' Evil Queen clearly doesn't appreciate the fact that Lily Collins' Snow White is not only younger, but is also wearing a dress much too similar to the Queen's. Collins' Snow White has absolutely nothing to do with Kristen Stewart's Joan of Arc-looking heroine in Snow White and the Huntsman. Collins', in fact, is much closer to the Disney version — though they aren't exactly alike, either. Directed by Tarsem Singh, from a screenplay by Jason Keller and Melisa Wallack, itself adapted from Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm's story (itself an adaptation of age-old European folk tales), this as-yet untitled Snow White movie also features The Social Network's Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, Sean Bean, Mare Winningham, and 1991 Academy Award nominee Michael Lerner (Barton Fink). Kristen Stewart will play Snow White in Rupert Sanders‘ Snow White and the Huntsman (2012). Snow White and the Huntsman producer Palak Patel indicated through his twitter account that The Twilight Saga and Welcome to the Rileys actress ”is in the final stages of negotiation and will officially sign next week.” Palak Patel’s tweets were quickly deleted but were snared and copied in their entirety by an intrepid few. Cinematic fairytales now come with a postmodern wink as standard. But a return to Disney innocence might be hard, writes Emily Barr – fairytales were never innocent to start with
Here is a one-question quiz for you. An animation of a Grimm fairytale is due to hit our screens in a fortnight. Do you think that Tangled is a straightforward, retelling of the brothers Grimm's version of Rapunzel? Or might it be a wildly postmodern, turning-convention-on-its-head rollercoaster ride with a kickass heroine, a wisecracking dude of a hero, and a crone who is scared of ageing, in place of the "wicked enchantress"?
Yes, gather round, children, and sit comfortably, for it is postmodern fairytale time once again. The smashing of storytelling convention is so normal that it has become a convention all of its own. Take a familiar story. Mix it up a bit and wink knowingly at the audience over the characters' shoulders.

One day, long ago, a drop of the sun fell from the sky and hit the ground, leaving to blossom a single, large glowing flower.
This flower, being imbued with the power of the sun, had magical properties and could heal the sick and even restore youth to the elderly. The vain old crone Mother Gothel found this flower, and kept it all for her own so that she might be young and beautiful forever. The legend of the flower grew, however, and soon there was a dire need for its use. The queen, who was quite pregnant, became deathly ill. The desperate king sent out all of his men to see if they could locate the flower, bring it back, and use its healing powers to...

The Sisters Grimm tells the story of almost 12-year-old Sabrina and her 7-year-old sister Daphne. Ever since their parents went missing, the girls have been bounced around the foster care system. At the beginning of the book, they are being taken to stay with a woman claiming to be their grandmother. The only problem is that Grandma Grimm died before either girl was born. Or at least that was what their parents said ...
In actuality, Sabrina and Daphne's parents lied to protect them. The Grimms, related to the brothers Grimm of fairy-tale fame, are charged with keeping order in the town of Ferryport Landing. Fairy-tale creatures, or "Everafters" as they prefer to call themselves, came to America to escape opression. Soon, humans began to converge and the everafters lashed out, fearing the same oppression. Wilhelm Grimm had a witch cast a spell keeping all the everafters in Ferryport Landing as...

Variety is reporting that Catherine Hardwicke, director of last year's quite popular (if insufferable) Twilight, has signed up for a Gothic retelling of the infamous tale of Little Red Riding Hood. The new film, titled The Girl With the Red Riding Hood is said to be centered around a sort of love triangle. My guess? The werewolf, the woodsman, and of course the randy Little Red Riding Hood herself.
The story of Little Red Riding Hood is an easy target for a heated Gothic romance with werewolf overtones; easy enough that it has been done before. In the Company of Wolves, directed by Neil Jordan and based on a story by Angela Carter, was a beautiful Gothic surrealist film spun directly from the old story made popular by the Brothers Grimm.
Either way, you mix werewolves and women, and you've my attention! A release date may be far in the future,...

"Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke was not asked to return for the sequel, but has now signed on to helm "The Girl With the Red Riding Hood," a gothic re-telling of the "Little Red Riding Hood" story. Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company, the new project is being described as a werewolf movie with a teenage love triangle at its center. In the classic story, published in the 19th century by the Brothers Grimm, a wolf disguises himself to fool a girl delivering food to her sick grandmother in the forest. Earlier oral versions of the tale, which date back to the Middle Ages, are far darker and sometimes involve a werewolf rather than a wolf.

Earlier this month we learned that Leonard DiCaprio’s Apian Way was developing a gothic reimagining of the classic story Little Red Riding Hood. It has now been announced that Twilight helmer Catherine Hardwicke has signed on to direct. The film, titled The Girl With the Red Riding Hood, is being written by David Leslie Johnson and will feature a Werewolf and have a teenage love triangle at its center. The best-known version of the story — in which a wolf disguises himself to fool a girl delivering food to her sick grandmother in the forest — was published in the 19th century by the Brothers Grimm. Earlier oral versions of the tale, which date back to the Middle Ages, are far darker and sometimes involve a werewolf rather than a wolf; the first published version, by Charles Perrault, concludes with Red Riding Hood eaten by the wolf, with no happy ending.
