From features to TV projects, World War II is a big focus for creatives this season, and particularly as we head into Mipcom. To wit: FremantleMedia’s Euston Films and Ufa Fiction are set to co-produce the adaptation of Robert Harris’ latest novel, Munich. The spy thriller will be filmed in the UK and Germany. It’s a story about treason and conscience, loyalty and betrayal, and is filled with real-life characters – Hitler, Chamberlain, Mussolini, Daladier – and events…...

This week’s edition of Evil Stepmothers casts a spotlight on Colleen Harris, a California who was convicted of first-degree murder after gunning down her husband, a former U.S. Forest Service supervisor, in January 2013. The episode, named A Murder You Can’t Ignore, tells the story of Colleen Harris — whose stepson accused her in court of having “maliciously, hatefully, shot my dad while he was sleeping.” Colleen Harris was nicknamed “Grandma Cookie” by her family. “Successful and newly single, Colleen Harris is having a hard time starting over when she bumps into old flame Bob Harris,” says a press release for the show. “She plans to...read more...

World War, a solemn vow, and a promise betrayed lead to a ‘night of the living war dead’ – all cooked up by the director of Napoleon, Abel Gance. The early, famed pacifist fantasy is back in near-perfect condition and restored to its full length. It’s a reworking, not a remake, of Gance’s 1919 silent classic.

The Bates Motel is located in the quaint, idyllic seaside town of White Pine Bay. Behind the emerald- green curtain are some residents with disturbing secrets-we're looking at you Bob Harris-and a town with some deeply-rooted problems. Whether it be the morally ambiguous law enforcement, the high mortality rate, or that creepy teen and his hot but emotionally volatile mom who own the rundown motel with a sordid history, White Pine Bay is the perfect place to settle down if you enjoy taxidermy, drug wars and gun play. Otherwise, here's just a few reasons why this seemingly charming hamlet is anything but.

Sofia Coppola’s 2003 film Lost in Translation and Spike Jonze’s 2013 film Her both dealt with themes of loneliness and isolation in big cities, and how people cope with them. While the film then sees lead characters Bob Harris and Theodore, as well as Lost in Translation‘s Charlotte, deal with their individual cases in different ways, both films still retain a remarkable number of similarities in the way they explore and illustrate how the characters feel.
Vimeo user Jorge Luengo Ruiz has now edited together a video essay showing these similarities. Titled “Lost in Translation//Her: An Unloved Story”, the essay examines how the two films go about portraying the lead characters, eschewing dialogue from either film to focus on the cinematography and performances. Jorge Luengo Ruiz adds this to the video:
Three persons. Two cities. One feeling.

Last Week's Review: 'Archer' Season 6 Episode 10, 'Reignition Sequence,' Tests Sterling's Loyalty "I swear to God I had something for this." (Episode Summary) Archer tries to take Lana on a romantic getaway in order to explain what happened with Katia the week prior, but then he neglects to tell her they're also on a business trip to assist Welsh rebels attempting to escape an MI5 agent. As one can imagine, none of this goes over well with the hot-headed Agent Kane — especially her drugging by Archer himself — but it all turns out all right in the end, as our two lovebirds show a surprising degree of maturity for a couple who can't even agree on who gets the gun before being assaulted by a giant. "Bloody Mary, full of vodka, pray for me now..." (Best Drinking Reference)Who's a better spokesman: Bill Murray as Bob Harris hawking Suntory whiskey in...

A Florida man claims he killed his neighbor in self-defense, threw the victim's body in his truck and drove to his lawyer's office because he didn't know who else to trust. John Marshall, 52, told attorney Robert Harris that he fatally shot 65-year-old Theodore Hubbell Jr. in self-defense after the two got into an argument Wednesday, Wzvn-tv reports. Marshall then put his neighbor's body in the pickup bed of his truck and drove straight to Harris's office. "Once I learned of the facts, I called 911," Harris told the TV network. Marshall claims that Hubbell tried to kill him first, his lawyer also said.

Adapted from the book "The Ghost" by Robert Harris, this unnerving mystery is a return to form for Roman Polanski, thanks mainly to the cagey cat-and-mouse plot which plays into the director’s strongest suit. Ewan McGregor plays the titular scribe whose creeping paranoia turns out to be completely justified and Pierce Brosnan is the man who inspires much of that anxiety.

Roman Polanski will film his next feature in Poland—if the country guarantees his safety from extradition to America, where the 80-year-old director is still wanted on charges from 1977 of having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Polanski’s film, titled An Officer and a Spy and based off of Robert Harris’s book of the same name, will be a biopic about 19th-century French officer Alfred Dreyfus and his infamous trial in the French court. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Polanski has been scouting locations in Krakow and Warsaw with executives from the Polish Film Institute and top Polish studios for the film.

The Fast Show celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, with BBC Two airing its 2011 'Fosters Funny' series on TV for the first time tonight (May 23).
There are so many classic moments and characters from the 1990s comedy - from Bob Fleming to the 'Brilliant' kid to Ed Winchester - but we have chosen just five of our personal favourites.
1. Johnny Nice Painter and the chasm of clams
The Fast Show had the amazing ability of repeating gags without it ever getting obvious or boring. Every time Johnny Nice Painter appeared on screen, you knew at some point he would hear the word 'black' and go off the rails, but each time was more hilarious than the last.
This one was particularly excellent, complete with the chasm of clams, eyes made out pies and pier landings.
2. Ted & Ralph play an awkward word game

Hilary Mantel, Jonathan Franzen, Mohsin Hamid, Ruth Rendell, Tom Stoppard, Malcolm Gladwell, Eleanor Catton and many more recommend the books that impressed them this year
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Five Star Billionaire by Tash Aw (Fourth Estate) is a brilliant, sprawling, layered and unsentimental portrayal of contemporary China. It made me think and laugh. I also love Dave Eggers' The Circle (Hamish Hamilton), which is a sharp-eyed and funny satire about the obsession with "sharing" our lives through technology. It's convincing and a little creepy.
William Boyd
By strange coincidence two of the most intriguing art books I read this year had the word "Breakfast" in their titles. They were Breakfast with Lucian by Geordie Greig (Jonathan Cape) and Breakfast at Sotheby's by Philip Hook (Particular). Greig's fascinating, intimate biography of Lucian Freud was a revelation. Every question I had about Freud – from the aesthetic to the intrusively gossipy – was...

Lucky 7 is yet another translation of British television for American audiences, and it’s about par for the course. While some efforts (mostly long ago and far away, with the exception of The Office) have come together to create long-lived, and beloved series, this isn’t an avenue of series creation that has a solid, recent track record.
Based on the British show, The Syndicate, it’s the story of a group of coworkers at a gas station who have been playing the same numbers for years, and fear for the jobs as rumors abound that the station is closing. All with their own monetary woes, which are laid out for us in great detail, this rag tag assortment of characters is about to find out that there are a lot of problems that come with their sudden riches.
The main trouble this show is going to have is in the translation of format.

With the release of "Lost in Translation" ten years ago, everyone was finally forced to take Bill Murray seriously. Even the Academy finally noticed him and gave him a Best Actor nomination, the only one he's received so far.
By this time, he'd been paring down his craft for 30 years until, with the help of directors like "Translation"'s Sofia Coppola and "Rushmore"'s Wes Anderson, he'd achieved a kind of Zen purity. After that, he could choose to play the smartass clown (as in his early roles) or the serious thespian, or somewhere in between. With no agent and plenty of savings, he could pick and choose projects at whim and do only what he felt like doing. So even his lesser movies seemed like labors of love; after all, there must have been something personally appealing to him in those roles to coax him off the golf course.

Lost in Translation

Ahead of this month’s screening of Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring at Cannes, I finally broke down and watched her sophomore directing effort, Lost in Translation. I loved seeing Bill Murray’s comeback via every Wes Anderson film but had always overlooked Coppola’s depiction of Murray as the washed up actor in Tokyo. Couched between The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Lost in Translation presents Murray in a role much more akin to his own experiences as an actor.
Bill Murray plays Bob Harris, a jaded and ageing actor whose glory days are far behind him. He comes to Tokyo to shoot an ad for whiskey. It is clear that Harris attempts to avoid new experiences as a matter of habit, and he is only in Japan to earn $2 million. Given Harris sour demeanor and age,...

Eddie Izzard, Gillian Anderson, Lance Henriksen and Gina Torres will also appear in the 13-part first season, set to premiere on NBC on Thursday, April 4.
Torres recently told Digital Spy that Hannibal will be "chilling".

Roman Polanski will make his next film about “one of the most sensational political scandals and miscarriages of justice in history.” But no, it’s not autobiographical. By the end of the year, Polanski plans to be filming the political thriller “D,” based on the infamous Dreyfus affair, not his own legal troubles. The new project reunites him with his “Ghost Writer” screenwriter Robert Harris and producers Robert Benmussa and Alain Sarde. The 1894 scandal involved a Jewish officer of the French army who was convicted of passing secrets to the Germans and the head of French counterintelligence that ultimately tried to prove that Dreyfus was not actually the traitor. “I have long wanted to make a film about the Dreyfus Affair, treating it not as a costume drama but as a spy story,” said Polanski. “In this way one can show its absolute relevance to what is happening in today’s world — the age-old.

Throughout the first half of February, the Sound On Sight staff will take a look at the Academy Awards.
(Warning: plot spoiler alert!)
The 76th Academy Awards ceremony was a memorable year. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King swept the board with its 11 awards, Sofia Coppola was the first American woman to be nominated for Best Director, and there was also one debatable injustice for Best Actor.
43 million viewers saw Sean Penn won the prize for his role as ex-con Jimmy Markum in Mystic River. He won over apparent frontrunner Bill Murray’s aging actor Bob Harris in Lost in Translation.
Don’t get me wrong: Mystic River is a great film – gritty, gripping and heartwrenching in one tidy bundle – but Tim Robbins deserved more praise for his performance as the tormented Dave Boyle. Sean Penn is a wonderful actor; his portrayal in Milk (2008) is beyond brilliant and...

Try as he might, the next film for Paul Greengrass is proving elusive to get started. He was looking to direct his Martin Luther King Jr. flick "Selma" but unfortunately Universal put the brakes on that after the civil rights leader's estate expressed concern about some of the not so nice things in the script. He circled a couple of other projects that ultimately went to other directors, including "Frankenstein" over at Fox (now with Shawn Levy) and "Rush" (now with Ron Howard). At one point, the pirate rescue story "Maersk Alabama" with Tom Hanks looked like it would roll next, but talk has quieted. Lastly, over the summer, Greengrass was attached to an adaptation of Robert Harris' hedge-fund world drama "The Fear Index."...

This week on House, Chase and Taub return, there's baby mama drama, and a small-town hero sheds layers of lies and skin. Somehow all these threads come together for a thoroughly satisfying episode.
My Affair Lady
Everything starts with local upstanding community leader Bob Harris winning a community service award. He wins a commendation for coaching little league, running scholarship funds and probably spending his free time giving paraplegic orphans piggy-back rides to school everyday. Just to rub our noses in what a swell guy Bob is, his stereotypically radiant wife and kids get called onstage to smile and wave with him.
