On April 5th, 20th Century Studios gave a theatrical release to The First Omen, which serves as a prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen (watch it Here) – and the movie was surprisingly well-received, with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray giving it an 8/10 review and Tyler Nichols writing an article about why it works so well. The movie hasn’t been burning up the box office charts; made on a budget of $30 million, it has only pulled in $36 million so far. But if a sequel were to get the greenlight, director Arkasha Stevenson knows one subject she would want to cover in the follow-up: the mystery of the jackal.
In the original The Omen, we were told that the Antichrist was born of a jackal. The First Omen digs deeper into his parentage, letting us know that it wasn’t quite as simple (although very strange) as it appeared to be in the original movie,...

Back in 1958, director Irvin Yeaworth brought the world a really fun creature feature called The Blob, which was followed by Larry Hagman’s late-to-the-party sequel Beware! The Blob (a.k.a. Son of Blob) in 1972 and an awesome remake directed by Chuck Russell – which ranks as one of the best remakes ever made – in 1988. We’ve been hearing rumblings of another Blob remake for over a decade now. Rob Zombie was attached to write and direct a new version of The Blob for a brief period of time, and commissioned some concept art before leaving the project. The Conjuring writers Chad and Carey Hayes wrote a draft of the script that reimagined the titular being as the B.L.O.B., which stood for Biological Lethal Organic Bomb. Their script was scrapped. Later, Con Air director Simon West was going to be helming the film, with Samuel L. Jackson signed...

The film stars Nell Tiger Free of the Apple TV+ series Servant, and will be hitting the big screen with an R rating for violent content, grisly/disturbing images, and brief graphic nudity. That’s a rating the filmmakers really had to fight for, as director Arkasha Stevenson revealed to Fangoria that there’s a birthing scene that nearly earned the film an Nc-17 rating – mainly because it featured a thirteen second shot of a woman’s vagina. That shot had to be whittled down to secure the R.
Stevenson said, “The horror in that situation is how dehumanized that woman is. This has been my life for a year and a half, fighting for the shot. It’s the theme of our film.

What do you think about cinematic universes? While mega franchise worlds like the MCU certainly seem to overshadow smaller connected universes like the View Askewniverse, there certainly is a mix of positives and negatives within these shared continuities. Among the horror genre’s cinematic universes are movies like Freddy vs. Jason, where two large franchises crossed over into one… interesting movie? Or how about Spiral: From the Book of Saw, where the events of the Saw franchise exist, but a new serial killer is on the rise. And of course, there is the extensive and ongoing mixed bag of scares and screams that is The Conjuring Universe. The Warren family is practically a goldmine for source material that is sure to set you on edge.

Apple TV+ has announced that they will be releasing the four-part documentary The Enfield Poltergeist – which tells about the case that served as inspiration for The Conjuring 2 – on October 27th, just in time for Halloween viewings. Along with that announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer for the docu-series, and you can check it out in the embed above.
According to Deadline, The Enfield Poltergeist relies on more than 250 hours of audio archive to help recreate the infamous events in Enfield. Throughout four episodes, the events at Enfield are reconstructed using the recordings captured by Maurice Grosse, a paranormal investigator who archived all of his interviews from back in the day. The doc built a replica of the council house where the incidents took place so performers could reenact what is heard on the tapes.
The docu-series also features appearances by people who were actually involved in the haunting case.

It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.

Cinematic universes are all the rage now but it's easy to forget how recent a phenomenon this actually is. The notion of a cinematic universe didn't really exist until around 2010 when it became clear what Marvel Studios was doing with its various superhero franchises in the lead-up to the record-breaking "The Avengers" in the summer of 2012. Sure, we had Kevin Smith's films making up the View Askewniverse starting with "Clerks" in 1994 -- not to mention Universal's monster movie crossovers from decades earlier. Still, once Marvel perfected the model, Hollywood chased it down rabidly. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails spectacularly. But arguably nobody has done it better this side of Marvel than James Wan and "The Conjuring" universe.

Whether you love or hate James Wan's "The Conjuring," it's impossible to deny the impact the 2013 film had on horror. Wan fused atmospheric scares with Joseph Bishara's string-filled and spine-tingling score to craft a part-haunted house, part-possession film that jump-scared its way into earning more than 320 million at the worldwide box office. By 2021, "The Conjuring" franchise has earned 2 billion, as confirmed by Deadline.
While "The Conjuring" was marketed as a story based on true events, Wan and co-writers Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes took several creative liberties when bringing the Warrens' investigation of the Perrons' family house to life. (For example, the film's exorcism...

Where to Give the Devil His Due in The Conjuring's latest - "The Devil Made Me Do It:" A Film Review
*there are spoilers here* Director: Michael Chaves. Writers: David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, James Wan, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. As entertainment, The Conjuring franchise does a commendable job in playing upon the tropes which makes some horror films great. The latest installment, "The Devil Made Me Do It," is a reasonable continuation to which I'm waiting for all the parts to come together on. It's not the same as the prior works, as it depends on more action than exploration (i.e. the haunted house trope), but I was glad to see the Kolchak style change. The directors can liberally copy from other films with recognizable The Exorcist (1973)or Poltergeist (1982) moments as much as they want and include as many obligatory jump scares to the film, and I'm okay with it. As a statement on whether Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are paranormal investigators...

Third film in the main “Conjuring” series stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson and opens June 4
Lorraine and Ed Warren are back for the third film in the main “The Conjuring” series, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” and this time they’re testifying about the existence of Satan and working to investigate a grisly murder committed in broad daylight.
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are back in “The Devil Made Me Do It,” which is based on real case files and involves an actual murder case about a young man in 1981 named Arne Johnson who for the first time in a court of law claimed demonic possession as a defense.
“The court accepts the existence of God every time a witness swears to tell the truth,” Patrick Wilson says in the trailer. “I think it’s about time they accept the existence of the Devil.”

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It at long last is scheduled to open in theaters and HBO Max on June 4, 2021.
The film reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson return to star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, under the direction of Michael Chaves (“The Curse of La Llorona”). The film also stars Ruairi O’Connor (Starz’ “The Spanish Princess”), Sarah Catherine Hook (Hulu’s “Monsterland”) and Julian Hilliard (the series “Penny Dreadful: city of Angels” and “The Haunting of Hill House...

Director Floria Sigismondi and star Mackenzie Davis on why The Turning’s century-old source material is still relevant.
In 1898, British-American author Henry James published The Turn of the Screw, a novella about a governess who begins to believe that the two young children she has been hired to care for have come under the influence of malignant spirits. The book is considered one of the great ghost stories, as well as a literary landmark, thanks to its subtle yet escalating sense of inescapable dread and the ambiguous, unreliable nature of its narrative, which calls everything in the story into question.
Naturally, the book has been adapted many times and in several mediums, including stage plays, an opera, a ballet, TV productions and films. The most famous is arguably The Innocents, a 1961 movie starring Deborah Kerr as the governess that remains one of the most chilling horror films ever made.

Ever since #MeToo opened the world’s eyes to the horrors of toxic masculinity, horror filmmakers — particularly female ones — have been finding increasingly creative ways to imbue their work with fears unique to women. This past year alone, both Jennifer Kent’s “The Nightingale” and Sophia Takal’s “Black Christmas” used rape-revenge tropes as plot points, though to vastly different degrees of success.
In her stylish if not entirely bone-chilling new movie “The Turning,” director Floria Sigismondi shrewdly updates Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw” to haunt her young protagonist with unwanted male attention and obsession. Updating the story that inspired Jack Clayton’s 1961 classic “The Innocents,” which followed the text more closely,
The film’s opening hews closely enough to the original novella, as the fresh-faced Kate (Mackenzie Davis) accepts an unusual position as governess for absurdly wealthy orphan Flora (Brooklynn Prince), who lives in an extravagant manor home.

Director Floria Sigismondi’s “The Turning” is like the alt-rock cousin of author Henry James’ novella “The Turn of the Screw.” From its grunge-infused soundtrack and period setting to its fiery feminist overtones, this is an ambitious contemporary take on the iconic, claustrophobic thriller. Concerning two young orphans who psychologically torment their caretaker in a spooky, sprawling mansion, it comes across as a fuzzy, frayed adaptation courtesy of a gimmicky, ambiguous climax that undermines the journey. Lacking spine-tingling dread, taut tension, and the deservingly provocative ending needed to make its modern sentiments land, this re-imagining is less than a classic.
Bubbly teacher Kate (Mackenzie Davis) has taken a position at Bly Manor as governess for 7-year-old Flora (Brooklynn Prince), who’s suffering from trauma associated with the death of her parents outside the gates of the palatial estate. The family’s former live-in nanny, Miss Jessel (Denna Thomsen), abruptly left...

The writers of “The Conjuring” films Chad and Carey Hayes are developing a new horror franchise of films inspired by the stories of the haunted Lalaurie Mansion in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
The two brothers will tell the history of the house and its crazed owner, Madame Delphine Lalaurie across multiple film installments, and the intention is for principal photography to begin in 2020.
The Lalaurie Mansion is considered one of the most haunted houses in the world and has been closed to the public since 1932, but it remains a popular tourist attraction. The house’s owner Madame Lalaurie was a New Orleans socialite and serial killer who tortured and murdered enslaved persons hidden away in her house all while being the center of attention as the host of extravagant parties.

They helped create the foundation for The Conjuring cinematic universe with their screenplay for the 2013 horror film, and now Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes turn their attention to Henry James' The Turn of the Screw to bring a new adaptation of the classic novella to life in The Turning, which now has an official trailer ahead of its release next January.
Starring Mackenzie Davis and Finn Wolfhard, The Turning will be unleashed in theaters on January 24th, 2020 via Universal Pictures:
"For more than 100 years, a deeply haunting tale has been passed down to terrify audiences. Next January, DreamWorks Pictures’ The Turning takes us to a mysterious estate in the Maine countryside, where newly appointed nanny Kate is charged with the care of two disturbed orphans, Flora and Miles. Quickly though, she discovers that both the children and the house are harboring dark secrets and things may not be as they appear.

Reviews are in for the newest spinoff film inspired by “The Conjuring” universe, “The Curse of La Llorona,” and the horror film appears to be dead on arrival, at least as far as critics are concerned. “La Llorona” is the latest film to hit the formerly revered franchise begun in 2013 by director James Wan and writers Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. That includes both “The Conjuring” movies, two “Annabelle” movies with a third on the way, and last year’s box-office hit but critical failure “The Nun,” which also has a sequel coming. Wan handed over the reigns to director Michael Chaves for “La Llorona,” which is currently the franchise’s only standalone film. From reading the reviews below — it may stay that way.

Four movies deep, The Conjuring universe is now widely considered to be a cornerstone of Hollywood’s horror scene. Not bad for a film franchise that flickered into life only four years ago.
In that time, James Wan (Aquaman) has delivered The Conjuring and its sequel, The Enfield Poltergeist, while director John R. Leonetti broke course to focus on the nightmarish little doll known as Annabelle. A worldwide haul in excess of $256 million was enough to warrant a sequel (read: Annabelle: Creation), which is now available via Blu-ray and DVD.
Not only was it another feather in New Line’s cap – Creation topped its predecessor’s haul by almost $50 million at the global box office – but David Sandberg’s chilling follow-up helped expand The Conjuring universe into uncharted territory. Next up? The Nun, which recently got hit with a delay, pushing it from July 13th to September 7th.

Four movies in — with at least three more on deck — and the burgeoning The Conjuring Universe is continuing to scare up big box office bucks with no sign of slowing down. Even during the downturned, dog days of summer, the latest film in the franchise, prequel-to-a-sequel “Annabelle: Creation,” topped out as the weekend’s biggest winner, pulling in over $35 million in domestic returns and handily dispatching with its nearest competition (“Dunkirk,” now in its fourth week, made just $11.4 million to take second place). The 21st century has already played home to one of the genre’s biggest hit franchises ever and has steadily rolled out new offerings that seem destined to inspire their own series but, for now, “The Conjuring” is king. Piece by piece, the Conjuring Universe is beginning to establish itself as a cornerstone of Hollywood’s horror genre. Up until now, Warner Bros. and New Line’s nerve-shredding franchise has made room for three feature films – namely The Conjuring and its unnerving sequel, The Enfield Poltergeist, along with Annabelle – but already there are plans in place for Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, and The Crooked Man.
The latter two are based on characters introduced via The Conjuring 2, and while The Crooked Man is a project still in its infancy, The Nun has already set sights on a firm release date: July 13th, 2018. The Crow director Corin Hardy is at the helm of New Line’s spinoff, and over the past few weeks, Hardy has been busy posting status reports via Instagram.

Here’s the official logline, courtesy of WB:
The story centers on a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania taking her own life, with a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret and confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun from The Conjuring 2.
