Marvel has never left the public eye due to the success and fame of their cinematic universe, which generated countless more spinoff titles and installments that spanned for almost two decades and spawned millions of fans. Originally based on comic books, the heroes of Marvel have made their way into other media like gaming, and NetEase is planning something risky.
Competitive gaming has taken the world by storm, and almost every major company has dipped their toes and developed their own take on the battle royale genre. Recently, Marvel made one of the most surprising announcements of 2024, and no, this was not an announcement for a new move but a brand-new gameplay trailer for a video game. This title is called Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, and it is being helmed by none other than Amy Hennig, the same person behind the original Uncharted trilogy of games.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is a brand-new action-adventure title set in the World War II era. It would feature the likes of Captain America and Black Panther. It is being developed by Skydance New Media, and its visuals are just mind-blowing. This is no surprise, given the fact that this game is actually built on Unreal Engine 5. While the game has only been announced recently, fans have already started comparing it with some other forms of media.
Fans can’t help but compare Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra with a superhit MCU movie.

Skydance and Marvel Games announced the game back in 2021 (via Deadline) and officially teased in 2022 (via Game Informer). This year, State of Unreal 2024 has released a lot of new announcements, but one of the major ones is the upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. Currently, this is a new game that is being developed by Skydance New Media and will tell the story of Captain America and Black Panther as they attempt to thwart Hydra’s plans in Paris.
At the moment, we do not have a lot of information regarding this game, as the only trailer we have received is quite short and is mainly aimed at revealing some of the characters we will see in the game, but even that short trailer was enough to get a major reaction from the gaming community.

Marvel and Skydance New Media showcased the first trailer of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra at Epic’s State of Unreal 2024. The game was first announced in 2022.
The trailer depicts a complex relationship between Black Panther and Captain America, who initially appear to be clashing against one another. I presume the beloved heroes will join forces later in the game to take down Hydra.
Marvel 1943 is a narrative-driven cinematic action game set during World War II. The project is helmed by former Uncharted writer-director Amy Hennig and is made in Unreal Engine 5, which is evident from the highly detailed and visually stunning world seen in the trailer. The score is composed by Grammy winner Stephen Barton, who has previously created background score for games like Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

A new Marvel video game has been announced via a teaser trailer that was revealed during Disney's D23 Expo, which is happening as we speak. While the game may be largely a mystery, as it doesn't even have a title yet, this trailer is sure to raise some eyebrows and generate a whole lot of curiosity. For one, it takes place during World War II rather than a modern-day setting.
Naturally, that's a great place for Captain America to show up -- and he's certainly here! But he's not alone, as some other heroes are joining in on the action as well. Who will be taking on Hydra in the shadows with Cap? Black Panther, for one, but that's not T'Challa! We're actually looking at his grandfather, Azzuri, according to the official synopsis:

The streaming service Netflix pulled the plug on the sequel to Will Smith’s Bright following the controversy at The Oscars.
“It appears that Netflix will not be moving forward with a sequel to Bright. While Bright 2 was confirmed in 2018 with an orc audition, Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw revealed that Netflix has ‘abandoned plans to make a sequel to Bright,’ but disclosed that it was not related to the recent slap incident at the Oscars.”

Speaking of Netflix, The first-quarter reports are in, and it isn’t looking too hot a fourth of the way into 2022.
“In the first quarter of 2022 (January 1 to March 31), Netflix lost a net 200,000 subscribers, making it the first time in over a decade that the streaming service didn’t grow in subscriptions. If this weren’t bad enough, the loss was on the backdrop of Netflix projecting a 2,500,000 subscriber gain.

Updated with awards dates: The Peabody Awards said Tuesday that it will announce the winning projects in its newest category, Digital and Interactive Storytelling, on March 24. The inaugural awards will be given to legacy media projects, with the category being folded into the main Peabody ceremony beginning in 2023.
The news comes after the organization last year introduced the expansion of categories to recognize storytelling achievements across interactive and immersive categories. A newly created Interactive Board is screening projects across Gaming, Interactive Journalism, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Social Video, Interactive Documentary, Transmedia Storytelling and more.
Kinetic Energy Entertainment CEO and co-founder Diana Williams is chairwoman of the new board, which has added Gabriel J.X Dance, Yasmin Elayat, Navid Khonsari and Opeyemi Olukemi to a group that already includes Lars Bastholm, Jay Bushman, Aymar Jean Christian, Katerina Cizek, Amy Hennig, Al Shaw, Kamal Sinclair, Sara Thacher and Lance Weiler.

Sony’s Uncharted, based on the 15-year-old Amy Hennig and Naughty Dog-created Sony PlayStation video game, grossed $3.7M in Thursday night previews that began at 4Pm. That’s a solid number which bests the pre-pandemic previews of such mid-February hits like Sonic the Hedgehog, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and even with March PG-13 adventure movie Kong: Skull Island ($3.7M). Industry projections earlier this week had the PG-13 Tom Holland-Mark Wahlberg movie in the mid $30Ms over the 4-day Presidents weekend, possibly $40M, however, these preview figures provide great hope for better returns.
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes have thumbed down Uncharted at 39% Rotten, but it’s not a movie for them: It’s a pure, breezy, fun popcorn film. If all goes well for Sony, they might have a new franchise on their hands in this Ruben Fleischer directed film.

The Peabody Awards is expanding its domain to include honors for storytelling in interactive, immersive and new media categories. As part of the expansion — which comes a week after Peabody announced its 30 winners for 2021 — an additional board of ten newly appointed jurors has been named.
That group of industry experts will help Peabody — which honors “stories that matter in broadcasting and streaming media” — move into the digital and immersive format arenas.
“The foundation of the Peabody Awards is honoring stories that matter,” said Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody. “Significant and incredibly creative storytelling is happening beyond legacy media before our eyes. New storytelling techniques and advancements in technology are surpassing the confines of traditional media. Creators are pioneering new methods to tell powerful stories and reach new audiences, and the achievements are extraordinary.”

Nearly half a century after George Lucas introduced the world to Star Wars, the franchise remains a household name and one of the biggest media properties of all time. With nine mainline films and two spinoffs, multiple television shows, a bevy of video games and a variety of comics, there are few people who haven’t at least heard the names “Luke Skywalker” or “Darth Vader.” So, it’s no surprise that any company that can capitalize on the success of the series using their respective form of media, and that’s exactly what EA has done since 2013 when they purchased the exclusive rights to create Star Wars games for the indefinite future.
EA’s entries in the Star Wars universe so far include shooters Battlefront and Battlefront II and 2019’s action-adventure game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, all of which have been confirmed to be canon. Meanwhile, the fourth...

In an interview with the MinnMaxShow, producer Zach Mumbach reveals new details about Amy Henning’s “Ragtag” Star Wars project and laments the project’s controversial cancellation.
We had this leadership team come in from Vancouver… and not knocking them, they were in the same position I was in Army of Two. They were like ‘we need to ship this thing, let’s go, cut this, cut this, cut this’,” Mumbach says. “And I’m thinking, this is effing Amy Hennig, we have the chance to make the greatest Star Wars game ever made and a possible Game of the Year contender. This isn’t an Army of Two game.”
According to Mumbach, the Ragtag project’s development was strange from the start. Basically, Visceral Games was asked to convert to the Frostbite Engine and make Battlefield Hardline. While the team accepted and completed that task, Mumbach says the transition...

This canceled Star Wars game, codenamed Viking, would’ve launched on the new consoles.
EA has canceled another Star Wars game, we learned this week, with a proposed spinoff of the Star Wars: Battlefront franchise apparently being binned last year. We're finding out about it now thanks to a detailed report from Kotaku, who spoke to six different people in the know in order to bring this news to light.
You may already know some details of EA's somewhat tumultuous time with the Star Wars license: although the team at EA have managed to publish two Star Wars: Battlefront games and one single-player title, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, they've also canceled a game codenamed Project Ragtag, a heist-based title that Uncharted's Amy Hennig worked on until 2017, and a game codenamed Orca, an open-world experience that EA Vancouver worked on until 2018. And now, we've learned that...

Uncharted creator Amy Hennig reflects on Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and the cancelled Ragtag project.
While many Star Wars fans are excited about developer Respawn's upcoming single-player Star Wars adventure, Jedi: Fallen Order, few fans have as fascinating of a perspective on the reveal of this upcoming game as Amy Hennig; the creator of Uncharted who worked on an infamously canceled Star Wars project named Ragtag. Hennig admits to being a little confused as to why Fallen Order is being celebrated as single-player experience when Ragtag was partially canceled for being the same thing.
"[It's] odd," said Hennig to Eurogamer in regards to the Fallen Order tweet from EA that celebrated Fallen Order's lack of Dlc and its single-player experience. "I mean, it's coming from the EA Star Wars Twitter handle, so it's certainly part of the plan, but I don't know whether it's implicitly referencing...

Visceral’s third-person Star Wars game is no more.
The once-promising project flickered into life under the stewardship of Amy Hennig, former Game Director of Naughty Dog and its beloved Uncharted series. Few game developers garner as much praise and respect as Hennig, so when she waxes lyrical about a creative venture, people tend to stand up and listen.
Such was the case when Venture Beat spoke to the industry stalwart last month, at which point Hennig reflected on Visceral’s ill-fated Star Wars game – a project “too expensive” to see the warm light of day. Cost wasn’t the only hurdle that the project failed to overcome though, as Amy Hennig tells Vb:
But we knew going in that was the goal. We were going to put this functionality into Frostbite. A lot of the team was hired to do Battlefield, and so that was a bit of a cultural shift,...

Like many fans of the Dead Space series, Glen Schofield wants to return to the franchise.
In an interview with Game Informer, Dead Space creator Glen Schofield revealed that he'd love the chance to make the fourth installment in the series. When asked whether or not that game would be Dead Space 4 or some kind of reboot or altered universe, Schofield elaborated on his wishes.
"I would probably do something where I didn't have to follow the lore of the other two [games]," said Schofield. "I thought, in the end, when they introduced all the aliens and everything, 'Wow, you didn't need to do that.'"
While the idea of getting permission to re-write the Dead Space canon might be doable, Schofield addresses the bigger elephant in the room: getting EA to sign-off on a sequel. So far as that goes, he admits that realistically getting the game...

As Uncharted director Amy Hennig puts it, "things are clearly not working the way they used to" in the gaming business.
Amy Hennig, director of the first three Uncharted games, has spoken candidly about the current state of the gaming industry. She's noticed, as anyone following the industry has, that games companies currently have a tendency to lay off hundreds of employees in one go, most recently at Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts.
"I personally needed a break from it, but in that break, it's been an opportunity to say I'm not even sure it makes sense to do it that way," Hennig said to GamesIndustry.biz, discussing the trend for games companies to amass huge workforces, which they can't always afford to keep after a big title has launched.
"I think we keep doing it that way because we have these established companies and teams," Hennig continued,...

I fondly remember the golden years of Star Wars gaming. Everything from the ultra-detailed and incredibly satisfying X-Wing space shooter series to the moral thicket of Knights of the Old Republic to hurling stormtroopers to their doom in Jedi Outcast. It seemed that whatever kind of game experience you wanted, you could get it in a Star Wars title.
Disney’s purchase of the franchise should’ve heralded a new era of development, with hopes initially very high when EA won the sole rights to make Star Wars games. Six years later though and what have we got? Two average multiplayer shooters more known for their predatory microtransactions and loot boxes than their iffy gameplay.
It could have been so different, too. Dead Space developer Visceral Games teamed up with Uncharted creator Amy Hennig for what was promised to be a Aaa adventure in the mold of Sony’s hit series.

Amy Hennig, who left Uncharted 4 to work on a Star Wars game, has opened up about her version of Nathan Drake's fourth adventure
Uncharted writer-director Amy Hennig played a key part in the early development of Uncharted 4, but she didn't see the project through to fruition. Now, we've learned how Hennig's version of the game would have differed from the end result that fans eventually played.
Hennig, who played a core part in the Uncharted franchise until her exit from Naughty Dog in 2014, stepped away from the studio during the fourth game's development in order to work on a Star Wars title for Electronic Arts and Visceral. Sadly, although that Star Wars game got quite far in development, it was never released, leaving Hennig with two big projects in a row that she didn't get to complete on her own terms.

Over the last few months, the consensus has formed that EA has royally ballsed up their exclusivity deal with the Star Wars franchise. Despite being the only publisher allowed to release Aaa games on major consoles and PC, they’ve only managed two poorly received multiplayer shooters. In the meantime, they’ve cancelled a number of promising projects, with the biggest loss being Dead Space developer Visceral Games’ open world single-player adventure.
Fans were particularly dismayed because this had sounded like an extremely exciting title. Uncharted creator Amy Hennig was at the helm and it seemed that she’d bring some of the hi-octane razzle dazzle of that franchise to the Star Wars universe. For those who haven’t been keeping up, the story would have been set during the Original Trilogy soon after the destruction of Alderaan, and followed a rogue-ish character who’d eventually join the Rebel Alliance.

Project Ragtag, the cancelled Star Wars game from Uncharted's Amy Hennig, was pretty far along in its development.
Uncharted alum Amy Hennig and EA's Visceral Games were working on an ambitious single-player Star Wars game at Visceral, under the codename Project Ragtag, before the project was canceled by EA in 2017. Fans never got to see much of Ragtag, which reportedly focused on a group of scoundrels and thieves, but Hennig has now revealed that development and production on the title had gotten quite far along before the plug was pulled.
"I think Visceral was sort of beset with a lot of challenges," Hennig explained in an insightful new interview with Us Gamer. "Even so, we were making a game; people have said it was an Uncharted Star Wars. That's sort of reductive, but it's useful because people can kind of visualize something in their head.

When it comes to these binned Star Wars games, we find LucasArts and EA's lack of faith disturbing...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
The galaxy far, far away that George Lucas created and Disney now owns is a fertile ground for gaming greatness. Although it was the cinematic experience that originally earned this franchise its fan base, and no matter how excited we are for The Mandalorian on TV, there's something uniquely brilliant about crafting your own individual Star Wars saga by exploring that vast galaxy in gaming form.
Sadly, though, as is the case with many licensed video game franchises, the Star Wars gaming back-catalog has its fair share of projects that never made it through development. These seven titles became one with the Force before they got a chance to shine, but we're still itching to play them against all the odds.

Visceral’s original Star Wars title (codenamed: ‘Ragtag’) is officially toast.
The top-secret project began life as a third-person action game set in the period between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, while the addition of Amy Hennig, former game director of Uncharted, promised a swashbuckling adventure the likes of which we’ve haven’t seen before. At least within EA’s pool of licensed Star Wars titles.
Then came the big overhaul, during which time EA Vancouver took control of Visceral’s assets and planned to create a vast open world title in the vein of Destiny. Alas, according to Kotaku’s sources, that project has now stalled, and likely won’t see the light of day.
Here’s the official response from EA, courtesy of Kotaku:

Netflix is garnering plenty of attention for its ambitious effort to introduce interactivity to the world of narrative filmmaking with today’s debut of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.
The interactive film, which was 18 months in the making, follows a young video game designer who is trying to adapt a choose-your-own adventure novel given to him as a child. The premise creates the context for viewers to navigate their way through the story, making choices along the way that result in one of five main endings.
This experiment in branching narratives builds on Netflix’s earlier work creating follow-your-own-adventure type experiences for children’s shows like Puss in Boots. It’s attracting notice because of Netflix’s global reach and disruptive influence over the television industry.
“Because while Netflix already pioneered the art of nonlinear television, the company is bent on doing the same for interactive storytelling,” Wired breathlessly notes. “So grab your remote control.

It’s going on eight months since the closure of Visceral Games and still, EA’s decision to shutter the Redwood-based developer leaves a sour taste in the month.
Best known for Battlefield Hardline and the beloved Dead Space series, Visceral was reportedly working on a single-player Star Wars experience at the time, one built around a Solo-esque heist story involving the “scoundrels of space.” Co-writer Todd Stashwick, another Uncharted graduate, even went so far as to suggest that the final product would have been “beautiful, amazing and funny,” three superlatives one would typically associate with Lucasfilm’s galaxy far, far away.
Alas, Visceral Games has now been shuttered, leaving its promising Star Wars project wholly in the hands of EA. And while she’s now left the company to pursue her own indie studio, former game director Amy Hennig holds no ill feelings towards the mega-publisher, as host...

With the exception of Remedy’s third-person Star Wars game, EA’s output of licensed titles set within that famous, far-away galaxy is at risk of drying up. Or, at least, the single-player ones are.
Last week, for instance, it was with a heavy heart that we brought you the news that former Uncharted game director Amy Hennig had left EA to pursue her own indie studio. That leaves Visceral’s retooled Star Wars title “on the shelf” for the foreseeable future, though one thing’s for sure: the solo experience that was coming together under Hennig is no more.
Chances are a Destiny-like shooter will emerge from the ashes of Visceral’s licensed game, but we’re now learning that BioWare, the studio behind Knights of The Old Republic, has no immediate plans to return to that far-away galaxy as Mass Effect, Dragon Age and the soon-to-be-released Anthem take precedence.

I wonder what an Amy Hennig Studio would be like? Well, we might just see sooner that later!
After all the hype circulated around a Star Wars game from Visceral Games, EA hit the breaks on the hypetrain and shut the studio down in October. I think as gamers, we can all agree that this was really upsetting and completely unexpected. When this shut down happened, EA announced it was changing the games direction to make it "an exerience gamers would want to come back to". This is all fine and dandy, but what is going on with Amy Hennig?
Well, during the GameLab conference in Barcelona, EuroGamer caught up with Hennig, only to find that she hasn't been with EA since January. Hennig stated that, “I have not worked at EA since January, technically, legally. I’m working independently and staying independent. I’m not doing anything Star Wars and,...

In May 2013, following the sale of the franchise to Disney, EA acquired the license to make Star Wars video games. They announced this to a great deal of fanfare, too, which I think it’s safe to say they’ve not lived up to.
The multiplayer-only Battlefront felt like a barebones tech demo and its sequel has become a byword for predatorily gouging money from gamers. The days when we’d get regular single player action adventures in the universe seem like a distant memory (the campaign in Battlefront II felt like a hastily shoved together afterthought), and that memory looks like it’s going to fade even further now that Uncharted creator Amy Hennig’s Star Wars game is apparently on ice.
The title was in development at EA Vancouver and given the pedigree of its creative head, most were hoping for an exciting single player shooter in the...

Pop culture is full of wizened older figures (usually male) who guide the hero on their journey. Obi-Wan and Yoda. Dumbledore. Mr. Miyagi. We adore these characters in our media, yet in the real world it’s sometimes easy to overlook the contributions of older, experienced people.
Kate Edwards wants to change that. She’s the former executive director of the International Game Developers Association (Igda), as well as a consultant who uses her background as a geographer to assist studios with political and cultural content in their projects. She believes ageism is a rampant problem in the video game industry, one that’s being largely ignored.
“While sexism in the industry has garnered tremendous attention, and rightfully so, in the wake of Gamergate and other incidents, the response to ageism has typically been tepid by comparison,” she said.
Edwards thinks the problem is exacerbated whenever various media outlets enthusiastically...

Respawn Entertainment is working on a new Star Wars game called “Jedi: Fallen Order,” publisher Electronic Arts teased during its E3 press conference on Saturday.
Respawn CEO Vince Zampella briefly talked about the action-adventure title while sitting in the audience. It takes place during the “dark times” of “Star Wars” lore, when the Jedi are being hunted, he said. According to the official website, the game is set shortly after the events of “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” and focuses on a Padawan who survives Emperor Palpatine’s attempted Jedi purge.
Zampella and co-founder Jason West worked on the “Call of Duty” franchise at Infinity Ward before leaving to form Respawn in 2010. The studio is known for its multiplayer first-person shooters “Titanfall” and “Titanfall 2.”
EA had previously tapped “Dead Space” studio Visceral to create a new “Star Wars” game codenamed Ragtag. The unnamed project was a story-based,...

Voice actor Nolan North will be recognized for outstanding contribution to video game performance by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) next month at an event in Los Angeles.
North, best known for voicing Nathan Drake in the “Uncharted” series and Desmond Miles in the “Assassin’s Creed” series, has voiced characters in more than 180 titles over the course of his 20-year career. After the success of “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” in 2007, North became one of the most recognizable names (and voices) in the gaming industry.
“To be recognized for one’s work is always special, but to be recognized by BAFTA is truly an honor,” North said. “I am humbled beyond words.”
The chair of BAFTA’s Games Committee, Nick Button-Brown, credited North’s “singular talents” in voice and motion-capture performance in a press release.
“BAFTA is committed to celebrating and promoting the very best in games artistry,...

It looks like Disney isn’t quite ready to withdraw their Star Wars license from Electronic Arts after all. And that’s because according to a recent job listing, it appears that EA’s Vancouver studio is busy hiring for “an open-world project” set in that galaxy far far away.
Specifically, the job listing is for a lead online engineer to help implement “online features,” into their yet-to-be-announced Star Wars game. Interestingly, the description doesn’t mention anything about knowledge or experience with the Frostbite Engine, which likely means that this upcoming Star Wars title is unrelated to the Battlefront series and unconnected to the Star Wars project Visceral Games and Amy Hennig were working on (before Visceral were shuttered). Both those aforementioned titles were running on the Frostbite Engine, so it’s very possible that this new open-world Star Wars project is a completely different game.

EA's boss says "linear" games are less popular with gamers than they once were. Is the end nigh for cinematic games like Uncharted?
Huge games that last for dozens of hours. Mobile games that can fill a few idle minutes. Shooter epics that take in small armies of players, and intimate experiences that pit a single mind against a fiendish puzzle. Technology has given rise to a multitude of genres and all kinds of videogames - far more than anyone could have even dreamed of back when the medium was still in its infancy in the 1970s.
