A new film by Rudolph Herzog entitled “300 Trillion – The Debt Trap,” about the human stories behind world debt, has been acquired by documentary specialists First Hand Films.
Herzog, who is the son of Werner Herzog, says he was “stunned” to find that “the world’s debts have risen to a stunning 300 trillion U.S. dollars.”
“In the film, we go on a journey to discover the human stories behind those debts, not just to sound out the problem but to find solutions to the global debt crisis,” said Herzog. “I wanted to make a film that captures all aspects: tragedy, wonder at human folly, and stories of resilience and hope. Arte, Ard and Neue Celluloid Fabrik proved to be excellent partners in this venture.”
Jürgen Kleinig of production company Neue Celluloid Fabrik added: “We start to developed the project a couple of years ago. In the course of the pandemic,...

A cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme that pulled in an estimated 4 billion worldwide is getting the documentary treatment.
Sky Germany, the U.K.’s Channel 4 and super-indie Fremantle are backing a three-part doc series about the con, which was spearheaded by the mysterious Dr. Ruja Ignatova, who is still on the run from law enforcement officials.
“Crypto Queen” (working title) promises to shed exclusive new light on one of the biggest digital scams of the last decade. Produced by Tondowski Films and Derren Lawford’s Dare Pictures, the series explores the story of how self-styled lawyer and Bulgarian businesswoman Dr. Ruja Ignatova, dubbed ‘The Queen of Crypto,’ scammed investors out of billions of dollars in less than three years through her cryptocurrency brainchild, OneCoin.
At her peak, in 2016, Ignatova presented OneCoin on stage in Wembley stadium and hosted lavish parties in Dubai and New York, all at the expense of her investors.

A juicy new documentary about the life and public battles of late real estate mogul Leona Helmsley is currently in production, Variety has learned exclusively. The film will contain never-before-heard tapes of Helmsley and her archrival Donald Trump, as well as “smoking gun” evidence that will question the tax evasion case brought on her by Rudy Giuliani in 1988.
Helmsley was an icon of the “greed is good” era, an owner of luxury hotels and condominiums who left behind a 5 billion estate. Branded the “Queen of Mean” by the New York tabloids for her acid tongue and regal air, she was a bitter rival of Trump — who once called her “a disgrace to the industry and a disgrace to humanity in general.” Of Trump, Helmsley once reportedly said: “I wouldn’t trust him if his tongue was notarized.”

Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi label Dust is developing a modern take on the classic H.G. Wells novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. The series will be titled Moreau and will be written by Zack Stentz.
“The double helix wasn’t even a twinkle in Watson & Crick’s eye when H.G. Wells first wrote The Island of Dr. Moreau, but his 1896 novel proved astonishingly prescient about how unlocking the secrets of DNA would open the door to humanity playing God with the natural world in strange and frightening ways,” said Stentz. “And now, in the shadow of the Crispr revolution, it felt like the perfect time to revisit Moreau and bring it into our own 21st Century world of transgenic animals, designer babies and other scientific advances Wells never could have dreamed of.

Werner Herzog and his son, Rudolph Herzog, will partner with Gunpowder & Sky on “Last Exit: Space,” a new documentary examining mankind’s push to colonize space. Rudolph Herzog will direct, with Werner Herzog attached to executive produce the film, as well as narrate the picture in his inimitable German-accented growl.

"What do we know about war?" "Enough to fake one." Vertical Ent. has released the official trailer for an indie comedy titled How to Fake A War, from filmmaker Rudolph Herzog (son of Werner Herzog). This seems to be an updated take on Wag the Dog, centering the need to start a fake war around a global charity concert called "Piece of Peace". When an unexpected outbreak of peace leads to a ceasefire between Russian forces and Georgian rebels, a publicist tries to make a fake war so the concert doesn't end up cancelled. The film stars Jay Pharoah, Katherine Parkinson, Lily Newmark, Daryl McCormack, Ali Cook, and Samuel Vargu. This looks a bit too wacky, and somewhat careless, to actually connect with audiences this year. Not only is it a cheesier Wag the Dog, but there doesn't seem to be much nuance to this. Check it out. A man said to the universe:
"Sir, I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
"A sense of obligation."
--Stephen Crane

That man can be found at the center of Werner Herzog's films. He is Aguirre. He is Fitzcarraldo. He is the Nosferatu. He is Timothy Treadwell, who lived among the grizzlies. He is Little Dieter Dengler, who needed to fly. She is Fini Straubinger, who lived in a land of silence and darkness since she was 12. He is Kaspar Hauser. He is Klaus Kinski. He is the man who will not leave the slopes of the Guadeloupe volcano when it is about to explode. He is those who live in the Antarctic. She is Juliana Koepcke, whose plane crashed in the rain forest and she walked out alive. He is Graham Dorrington, who flew one of the smallest airships ever built...

A cartoon of Hitler on the cover of a Vanity Fair in November 1932. Rudolph Herzog, son of celebrated filmmaker Werner Herzog, was introduced to American readers this spring as the author of a newly translated book, Dead Funny: Humor in Hitler’s Germany, a revealing reexamination of the history of joke-telling during the Third Reich. Herzog, 38, is also known as co-creator of the 2004 BBC series The Heist, a reality crime show, and for his 2006 BBC film about popular jokes aimed at Nazis, which, two years later, was the subject of his book for a German publisher. Hitler considered anti-Nazi humor an act of treason, and from 1942 to 1944, the infamous People’s Court of Berlin issued 4,933 death sentences, many of which were linked to “defeatist” jokes. Herzog argues, however, that it wasn’t as dangerous to make fun of Nazis as some have claimed, and that most people executed for...

Rudolph Herzog, son of Werner, tells Geoffrey Macnab what the Nazis did for joke-telling
Hitler and Goering are on the radio tower in Berlin, looking at the crowds below. Hitler wants to do something to put a smile on Berliners' faces. So Goering says: "Why don't you jump?"
It is not the funniest joke, but a German woman, Marianne K, who told it at her workplace during the war was reported to the authorities, and executed as a result. Film-maker and author Rudolph Herzog, son of the German director Werner Herzog, includes the anecdote in his book Dead Funny: Humour in Hitler's Germany, as well as the court documents relating to her death. Published in the UK next month, the book originated with Herzog's documentary on the same subject, Ve Have Vays of Making You Laugh.
Herzog's thesis is that, during the Third Reich, Germans relished jokes about their leaders.
