The "John Wick" films feature some of the most gun-heavy action sequences in recent cinema history. In fact, the entire franchise is partly a resurrection of the popular "gun fu" style of martial arts action that came out of Hong Kong in the late nineties. However, director and stunt expert Chad Stahelski doesn't use the same type of blanks that can result in real-life deaths like the tragedies on the sets of "Rust" and "The Crow." According to Stahelski, filmmakers don't have to risk the deadly capabilities of blanks, either, since there exists technology that allows for much safer firearms practices during shoots. The director theorizes that it may be because of the backlog of guns in prop houses that productions continue to use more dangerous blanks to this day, despite not needing to.

The New Mexico’s Office of the Medical Investigator has determined that the deadly shooting on the set of western Rust was officially an accident.
Following the accidental shooting of 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchinson in October 2021, Alec Baldwin–who also serves as producer on the film–claimed he never pulled the trigger. However, a test by the FBI determined that, despite internal issues with the firearm, the gun could not have been fired without pulling the trigger.
According to the FBI report, “This was the only successful discharge during this testing and it was attributed to the fracture of internal components, not the failure of the firearm or safety mechanisms.” They also noted, “It may not be possible to recreate or duplicate” the scenario.
Baldwin’s lawyers have called it a “tragic accident.” No formal charges have been filed against Baldwin as of publication.

George Clooney is unhappy at the way things unfolded on the set of the indie film Rust.
On the Wtf With Marc Maron podcast, Clooney addressed the Rust set incident in which a gun discharged by Alec Baldwin shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. He doesn’t think Baldwin had any intent to harm, but stresses that following the deaths of Brandon Lee and Jon-Erik Hexum — both who died due to prop guns that were used during shooting that had live rounds/fragments in the chamber — gun safety should be of the highest priority on set.
“Every single time I’m handed a gun on the set — every time — they hand me a gun, I look at it, I open it, I show it to the person I’m pointing it too, I show it to the crew,” Clooney said. “Every single take.” Then, “You...

Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee’s daughter and Brandon Lee’s sister, has penned an essay published by Variety in which she calls for mandatory gun safety training on Hollywood film and television sets and urges the industry to reduce the amount of real firearms used on sets. Lee’s letter comes in the aftermath of the “Rust” tragedy, in which cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed after she was shot by a prop gun fired by star and producer Alec Baldwin. Shannon’s brother, Brandon, died on the set of “The Crow” in March 1993 after being fatally wounded by a prop gun.
“Twenty-eight years after losing my brother, Brandon Lee, to a very similar situation — one that allowed real bullets onto a film set and that made actors into agents of death — I’m finally in a sound enough mental and emotional space to raise my voice,” Lee writes. “So here goes.

In the original version of this story, I was one of the characters who suffered a terrible loss and who, alongside the main characters, had to learn to live again. It was a tale of darkness, the reverberations of which are still felt. It took 28 years to make the sequel, entitled “Rust,” and here I am reprising my role. Only this time, I play the seasoned veteran, the one who stands up at the town hall meeting and offers some sage advice, who sheds some light on the situation and attempts to set the stage for some measure of redemption.
To say that the main plotline of our drama revolves around an “accident” does not have enough reverence for the people involved or the level of negligence and its horrific consequences. One main narrative thread is that there is no need to change gun safety protocols because when they are followed,...

A collective of leading movie armorers and weapons masters is calling demands to ban real firearms on film sets after the fatal “Rust” shooting “misguided,” stating that the incident was a result of the disregard for safety measures and failure to hire “well-trained professionals.”
In a statement made on Tuesday, the group offered their condolences to the family and friends of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was killed during the rehearsal of a scene on Oct. 21 when a firearm held by Alec Baldwin discharged a projectile. As armorers and weapons masters, the group made clear that “the safety of the actors and all crew members is our highest priority” and offered statistics about firearm deaths on film sets.
“Industry records establish that there have been a total of three (3) firearm deaths on film sets since 1984. Of those three, two took place outside of California and with nonunion or inexperienced crews,” the statement said.

Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz introduced a resolution today to support legislation that would eliminate live guns and ammunition from television and movie productions following the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after a weapon discharged as star Alec Baldwin handled it on set.
“While movies can be convincing and very realistic — they are supposed to be make-believe,” said Koretz, who introduced the resolution. “A single gun accident, let alone a fatality, like the one that occurred on the Rust set and the ones that killed Brandon Lee and Jon-Erik Hexum destroy the lives of not only the victims and their families, but the lives of the other actors and crew who forever after are burdened with the emotional trauma of avoidable accidents.

Effective immediately, no “live” weapons will be used on the set of ABC’s The Rookie, showrunner Alexi Hawley announced in a staff memo on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“As of today, it is now policy on The Rookie that all gunfire on set will be Air Soft guns with CG muzzle flashes added in post,” the memo reads. “There will be no more ‘live’ weapons on the show. The safety our cast and crew is too important. Any risk is too much risk.”

When Jeb Bush revealed the slogan for his 2016 presidential campaign, most thinking people had pretty much the same reaction: Hey, that looks like the title of a sit-com! Clearly, the use of the exclamation mark was meant to distinguish George W.’s younger brother from the baker’s dozen of Republicans seeking the nomination, perhaps by making him seem a bit more more lively and vibrant. Maybe the former Florida Governor was trying to seem current by utilizing a punctuation that these days litters every one of our texts and emails. (If you say you’re excited to see me, but don't use at least one exclamation, how can I really believe you?) Generally, but not always, television shows that have dared to wield the exclamation point in their titles have done so with a precise purpose in mind, whether to demonstrate urgency, irony, or just plain enthusiasm. Occasionally, the...

The 1985 classic film Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was Tim Burton's feature directorial debut, and it was such a fun and entertaining ride. Fact: If you want to become a male model, you must associate with disco-dancing men in devil costumes, drug addicts, and stars of "Dynasty." Did you know? Everything is Terrible has clipped together a composite reel from the 1983 ABC TV movie "Making of a Male Model" starring Joan Collins as powerful (shocking, I know) modeling agent Kay Dillon and Jon-Erik Hexum, the gorgeous '80s actor who later accidentally killed himself while playing with a gun on the set of the action series "Cover Up." You can relive his studliness in this clip, but only if you can get past the incredibly bad/excellent dialogue. It is a real treat. My favorite moments: Ted McGinley of "Happy Days" fame as the dancing devil, Jeff Conaway as a scary Jeff Conaway type, and the line, "It's a strange apple, this Big Apple."...

The Legend of the Lone Ranger (Original Release Date: 22 May 1981)
The Legend of the Lone Ranger is one of my favorite movies, and much of this review will be a love letter to it. I re-watched it for the review, but I didn't need to. If I were stranded on an island and had to reconstruct movie narratives to keep my sanity, I'd manage with The Legend of the Lone Ranger as well as I'd manage with The Empire Strikes Back or E.T.
People generally like The Empire Strikes Back and E.T. The same can't be said for The Legend of the Lone Ranger. The only group that wound up hating it more than the critics was the viewing public. I had no sense of this as a very young kid, though I would grow to suspect it when I moved back to America in the late eighties.
Blank stares...

Towleroad my weekly column on this week's releases. I'm excited for Where the Wild Things Are but I want to see this Jonze doc on Sendak (it might be up for the Documentary Short Oscar) and I don't have HBO. Curses

November 5, 1957 - October 18, 1984
October 18, 1984. "A day that will live in infamy." At least in my mind — and a bunch of other gay boys of a certain age.
This Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of the death of mega-hunk, Jon-Erik Hexum.
The event can only be described as tragic — a hot, young, rising star accidentally shoots himself with a prop gun while on the set of his latest TV show. My best friend and I were devastated when we learned of the tragedy. At the time, neither of us knew the other was gay (remember, this was the '80s and we were kids). Yet for a brief moment, we let down our guard to lament the horrible tragedy: How could someone so young and talented (not to mention handsome) be gone forever?
Over two decades later I would include the incident in my debut novel, Band Fags!
