Director Karyn Kusama has talked about her aborted Dracula movie at Blumhouse, claiming the film’s critical take on men was too much for the studio.
Go back three years or so and we were awash with projects based on Dracula. There was Last Voyage Of The Demeter, Renfield, Chloe Zao’s sci-fi vampire Western and Karyn Kusama’s Blumhouse project, all of which were set to offer varying takes on the Prince of Darkness.
As is often the case in Hollywood when lots of similar(ish) projects bubble up at the same time, not all of them made it into production. We did get Last Voyage Of The Demeter and Renfield (although the former never got a theatrical release in the UK) but some other projects have yet to materialise: Chloe Zhao ended up working on Hamnet, her take on Shakespeare and his wife dealing with the loss of their young son.

“In the Streets” is the first edition of the Notebook Insert, a seasonal supplement on moving-image culture.Illustration by Lale Westvind. On the night of November 17, 2011, thousands marched across the Brooklyn Bridge holding electric tea candles, a kind of vigil for dashed hopes. Two nights earlier, their protest encampment had been evicted from Zuccotti Park, a sparsely planted public-private open space two blocks from the New York Stock Exchange, from which they had fomented a popular movement demanding broad changes to the status quo of global capitalism. The march had been planned in advance to mark two months since the inception of the occupation, but in the aftermath of the police raid, it took on a somber, even funereal aspect. As marchers proceeded across the bridge overpass, a huge circle of light appeared on the long windowless wall of a nearby skyscraper, beneath the menacing checkmark logo of a telecommunications company.

In the first “Omen” movie, the infant Antichrist, Damien — born at 6 a.m. on the sixth day of the sixth month — is given to an American diplomat and his wife to be raised as their own. The adoptive father is told that the boy’s mother died during childbirth, but upon closer investigation, he discovers not a human skeleton but that of a jackal. Individuals like Andy Kaufman, Richard Pryor, John Candy, Sam Kinison, Bill Hicks, Robin Williams, Gilda Radner, George Carlin, and Gene Wilder come to mind in a list of late comedic greats who changed the comedy landscape. Their influence remains a part of the art, with up-and-coming joke-slingers citing them as sources of inspiration. Sometimes, it’s good to reflect on the contributions of comedy’s titans. So Kino Lorder is proud to present Ron Frank’s Remembering Gene Wilder trailer, celebrating the life and career of the curly-haired clown alongside notable friends.
Remembering Gene Wilder is a heartfelt documentary and entertaining portrait of the life and career of the beloved actor, featuring an extensive array of highlights from Wilder’s most memorable films and interviews with his closest friends, family, and fellow comics.

Mojo Nixon was absolutely himself right to the end. The cult hero died Feb. 7 on board the Outlaw Country Cruise, where he’d performed and caroused in signature fashion the night before (“passing after a blazing show, a raging night, closing the bar, taking no prisoners,” according to a statement from his family).
Less than a year before that, he was in peak form as well, speaking with Rolling Stone about the making of his 2023 documentary, The Mojo Manifesto. It was a wide-ranging, side-splitting conversation, going over the wildest early...

T-Pain made headlines last year when he released a cover of the Black Sabbath classic “War Pigs” and knocked it out of the park. Now, the rapper/singer has gotten the attention of Ozzy Osbourne himself.
The Prince of Darkness took to X, formerly Twitter, to repost a live clip of T-Pain covering “War Pigs.” Like the aforementioned studio version of the cover, T-Pain kills it here as well, delivering a soulful vocal performance — no auto-tune required.
Wrote an impressed Ozzy: “This is the best cover of ‘War Pigs’ ever. Why didn’t you guys call me?”

As a Jew, you are taught early on that you are different and people will hate you for it and maybe kill you. They’ve done it since the beginning of Jews. We watched Holocaust documentaries at Hebrew school to make sure we understood. It didn’t seem like something I really had to worry about here as an American Jew.
I’ve been working professionally as a comic since 1988. When I was a kid, most of my favorite comics were Jews. Old Jews. Don Rickles, Buddy Hackett, Rodney Dangerfield, Woody Allen, Richard Lewis, Lenny Bruce. Comedy was basically Jewish in my mind for years. When I started doing comedy, I didn’t embrace my Jewishness. I didn’t want to honor the stereotype.
I just believed that being a Jewish comic had to be more than a schtick or neurosis or a way of talking and acting. I didn...

At some point in our culture, we began to see male comedians as philosophers. Invoking the legacies of George Carlin, Richard Pryor and Bill Hicks, comedy fans have labeled funny men as paternalistic truth tellers that we all must revere. Never mind the fact that these men are no longer alive and thus have no opportunity to challenge the way their work has been framed and which living comics they are compared to.
Louis C.K. is one such comedian who has often been spoken of in the same breath as these men, despite lacking the often political edge of their work. C.K. and comics like Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle are the confirmed gold standard of comedy, standing at the top of the mountain looking down at the rest of us. There’s no denying their talent and insight, but they are very much still human, despite the prevailing...

My favorite episode of "The Twilight Zone" is "The Howling Man." Self-adapted from a short story by Charles Beaumont, the episode's star is David Ellington (H.M. Wynant), an American hiker in post-war Europe. Caught in a storm, he stumbles upon a monastery and meets the secretive Order of Truth, led by Brother Jerome (John Carradine). The Order has the titular man (Robin Hughes) imprisoned in a cell, claiming him to be Satan in human form. After some persuasion from both parties, Ellington ultimately frees the prisoner and all of mankind pays for his mistake.
I discovered the episode when I was a Catholic schoolboy and a burgeoning horror fan, so the premise stirred primal fear within my soul. Even now, with my faith lapsed, "The Howling Man" is still an excellent half-hour of TV, with some of the best atmosphere and mystery in "The Twilight Zone."

Patrick Crusius, the white supremacist who pleaded guilty to federal charges after killing 23 people at an El Paso Walmart in 2019, was sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences in prison, the El Paso Times reports.
Crusius changed his plea to guilty in February after federal prosecutors told the court they would not seek the death penalty. In total, Crusius pleaded guilty to 90 federal charges, including 45 hate crimes. Prosecutors said Crusius carried out the attack because he believed Mexicans and other Hispanics “were to blame” and that “he was trying to defend his country.

Matty Healy‘s done it again. He kissed a man while performing with The 1975.
It all went down Friday night at the 2023 NorthSide Festival in Eskelunden, Denmark (their version of Coachella) and, while performing “Robbers”, the 34-year-old singer spotted a male security guard and planted a wet one.
The male security, wearing a reflective vest and standing in front of the stage, appeared to motion for a kiss on the cheek when Healy — holding a mic and bottle of champagne — got down on his knees did one better by pulling him in and giving him a kiss on the lips.
The crowd went wild at the gesture, though it’s usually what he does when performing “Robbers”. Healy’s been known to kiss fans — male or female — while performing the 2013 track off their self-titled album. He kissed a male fan onstage back in November 2022, and did so again the following...

The comedy world has been blessed with countless brilliant individuals whose laughter and wit have brightened our lives. Tragically, some of the most gifted stand-ups and comic actors have been taken from us too soon. Their stories are a mixture of laughter, pain, and heartache, leaving indelible marks on the comedy world. In this blog post, we pay tribute to the comedians who died young, exploring their lives, personal struggles, and the legacies they left behind.

Back in February, Ozzy Osbourne canceled his 2023 UK/European tour, and essentially retired from touring due to his various health issues. While his touring days may be over, the Prince of Darkness is determined to play more shows, even if it means getting “someone to wheel [him] out there.”
As of now, Ozzy has one gig scheduled, and it’s big one. He’s playing the massive three-day Power Trip concert event (tickets available here) in Indio, California, in October, along with fellow rock and metal icons AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Tool.
The metal legend was interviewed by Tenacious D’s Jack Black and Kyle Gass for the new issue of Metal Hammer, telling the duo he never wants to retire.
“I mean, doing a live show is what I live for,” said Osbourne. “I’ve had to cancel my European tour but I’m determined.

Nicolas Cage took on one of his most high-profile roles in quite some time, becoming Dracula in "Renfield." While the tale of Dracula has been told many, many times before, this particular film focuses more on the vampire's loyal assistant, played by Nicholas Hoult in this case. What we wind up with is a blend of action and comedy mixed in with some majorly bloody horror. For those who may have missed the movie in theaters, it is now available to watch from home with the click of a few buttons.
Universal Pictures has announced that director Chris McKay's "Renfield" is now available to either rent or purchase via Digital retailers. Initially, the rental price will be at the premium VOD level, meaning it will cost $19.99 for a 48-hour rental, as has been the case with most big studio movies right after they wrap up their runs in theaters.

The horror comedy Renfield gives the Dracula story gets a modern twist by re-imagining the vampire’s servant Renfield, played by Nicholas Hoult, as in a co-dependent relationship with his demanding boss/ master Dracula, played with scenery-chewing glee and comic menace by Nicolas Cage. A big part of the real fun of this very bloody horror comedy is in it fabulous recreations of Tod Browning’s classic 1931 Dracula with Bela Lugosi. Hoult does an impressive Dwight Frye as Renfield impression, including that crazy laugh, in these sequences (and occasionally throughout the movie). Nicolas Cage mimics the elegant Bela Lugosi in the recreations of Tod Browning’s classic but otherwise Cage’s Dracula is his own mix of monsters, drawing on more on Christopher Lee and others than Lugosi.

“Hurt but not defeated.” That’s the direction filmmaker Martha Coolidge gave to her star Nicolas Cage as they shot the pivotal breakup scene in the ’80s classic “Valley Girl.” In a filmed conversation from 2003 between the two for the film’s twentieth anniversary, Cage told Coolidge that he has “used that direction ever since” in all of his work.
As the iconic ’80s spin on “Romeo and Juliet” celebrates its 40th anniversary on April 29, and Cage returns to the big screen with his latest film “Renfield” — in which he plays the centuries old Prince of Darkness himself, Count Dracula, recovering from the latest attempt on his life with his familiar Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) in New Orleans — it’s clear that the impact of her words still resonate in the performances of the idiosyncratic actor.
He was just 17 years old when he auditioned for the role that would change his life.

Isn’t it amazing to have Nicolas Cage back in cinemas?! There is truly is no one like the mercurial, surreal performer but of course we don’t mean he has been completely gone from our screens: it’s just a lot of his output in the last decade or so has seen him predominantly confined to the smaller ones. Still, in recent years, he has graced us with his presence in ways only The Cage can with some of his most outlandish work in Mandy, Willy’s Wonderland, Prisoners of the Ghostland, and Color Out of Space, each showcasing the actor’s penchant for the extreme, the expressionistic and the fascinating.
He went full meta last year with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a brilliant satire film that poked fun at his long filmography and his unique persona, one that showed an often-forgotten funny side that helped him in his early career.

There have been so many variations and film versions of Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula, from 1926’s Nosferatu to Tod Browning’s 1931 Dracula to Francis Coppola’s well-regarded take with Gary Oldman to even comedic satires like Love at First Bite with George Hamilton taking on the role. Now in Universal’s latest effort to rescue its horror classics and make them new again, we have the perfectly cast Nicolas Cage as the Prince of Darkness. Even he has done an offshoot before, in 1988’s Vampire’s Kiss. However this time around the film is not centered on Dracula himself, but rather his beleaguered servant, henchman, whatever you choose to call him, Renfield, and it is another Nicholas, as in Hoult, who has the title role this time in Renfield. Cage’s part, though meaty, is actually supporting as the emphasis turns to the long-suffering assistant who was tasked with bringing...

Nicolas Cage sinks his teeth into the most iconic bloodsucker of all time in Universal’s Renfield, playing Dracula alongside Nicholas Hoult’s fly-eating henchman, Renfield.
The film arrives in theaters on April 14 – tickets are on sale now – and in the wake of the final trailer yesterday, Universal has now shared a “Look Inside” featurette.
Renfield is billed as a “modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone.”
“In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Oscar® winner Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.

Universal Pictures’ final trailer for the horror comedy Renfield shows the titular character meeting his new boss, and then offers a look at what life’s like nearly 100 years after being in Dracula’s service. Needless to say, it sucks.
Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) stars as Renfield and Oscar winner Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas) is Dracula. The cast also includes Awkwafina (Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings), Ben Schwartz (The Afterparty), Adrian Martinez (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Brandon Scott Jones (Ghosts), and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog).
Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) directs from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick & Morty), based on an original idea by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. McKay, Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst serve as producers, with Samantha Nisenboim executive producing.

Chris McKay is a director that’s well-loved here at JoBlo. While we loved his work on Robot Chicken at the Lego Batman Movie, many of us here at the site we major fans of The Tomorrow War, Prime Video’s big-budget Chris Pratt sci-fi epic that surprised a lot of us when it came out in the summer of 2021. Now, McKay is back with another ambitious live-action flick, Universal’s Renfield, which re-imagines the Dracula mythos through the eyes of his hapless manservant, played by Nicholas Hoult. And, with Nicolas Cage himself playing the Prince of Darkness, you can bet this will be a blast of fun.
Recently, we were invited to the set of Renfield. You can read our report here, as well as our interviews with Hoult and Cage, and now, here’s our 1:1 sit-down with director Chris McKay!

"I am enough. I deserve happiness. And I take full charge of my life today." Bring on the fangs. Universal has debuted a second & final trailer for Renfield, the Dracula comedy coming to theaters this spring. The first trailer was great, this is even better. Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history's most narcissistic boss. Renfield is forced to procure his master's prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. After centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there's a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency. Ha! Nicolas Cage plays the Count, joined by Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Adrian Martinez. From the director of The Lego Batman Movie comes this comedy about what happens when Drac loses his "assistant." This looks like it's going to be a blast,...

Two iconic Nic(h)olases are uniting on screen in less than a month. Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage are starring in “Renfield,” a comedic take on the Dracula mythos, and Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for the upcoming horror comedy.
Set to Radiohead’s early ’90s grunge hit “Creep,” a classic anthem for social rejects, the trailer begins in the time of Bran Stoker’s original “Dracula” novel, recounting Renfield’s (Hoult) first encounter with the devious Count (Cage). It then flash-forwards a hundred years later, with the familiar now the hapless lackey of the vampire, forced to find new humans to feed him and quench his thirst for blood.
But all that changes when Renfield saves a New Orleans bar from a shooting, and meets traffic cop Rebecca, who he quickly falls head-over-heels for. When he confesses his unusual occupation to his new love interest, she...

Recently, JoBlo was invited to visit the set of Chris McKay’s Renfield, a action-comedy-horror reimagining of the classic master-servant relationship the title character has with the Prince of Darkness himself, Count Dracula (played by Nicolas Cage). While on set, a bunch of us got the chance to talk to Nicholas Hoult about playing the iconic character, working with Cage, and his own take on the classic Dracula mythos. Here’s a transcript of the group interview we got to participate in with Hoult!
So, it sounds like your character goes through quite a journey.
Yeah. Yeah, I guess. In this film, we pick up with Renfield. He’s kind of been working for Dracula for probably around 100 years, just under 100 years or so. So, the Renfield that we’ve seen in–you know, from Bram Stoker’s novels and from previous films, he’s kind of been living in...

Ozzy Osbourne, the Godfather of Metal, may be most famous for his legendary contributions to the music genre, but the Prince of Darkness has also acted in a handful of movies. He's far from the first rock star to do so, but his choice of roles prove his sense of humor and knack for camp. Folks may recognize him from his cameos in comedies like "Austin Powers in Goldmember" and "Little Nicky," or voice cameos in "Gnomeo & Juliet" and "Trolls 2: World Tour," but earlier on he appeared in the lesser-known 1986 heavy metal horror film "Trick or Treat."
Not to be confused with the 2007 Halloween-themed anthology "Trick 'r Treat," "Trick or Treat" is a tongue-in-cheek relic of a time when conservative commentators were denouncing metal music as a serious threat to the public order. Initially, music icon Ozzy Osbourne didn’t think his idols, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton, would want to play on his new, Grammy-nominated album, Patient Number 9. The new album features some of the best rock musicians, including members of Metallica, Pearl Jam, Guns N’ Roses, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but Osbourne wanted Beck and Clapton.
Thankfully, the guitarists agreed.

Osbourne recruited producer Andrew Watt for Patient Number 9. Watt suggested that Osbourne ask his heroes Beck, who unexpectedly died on Jan. 10 of bacterial meningitis, and Clapton to appear on the album. Both guitarists played in one of Osbourne’s favorite bands, The Yardbirds. According to Rolling Stone, the Prince of Darkness “scoffed” at Watt’s suggestion.

No More Tours II, Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell tour that first began in 2018 as a send-off to his days as a world-touring musician, never got a proper close. In 2019, the European leg of the tour was postponed after he injured himself in a fall at home that aggravated a spinal injury he initially suffered during a nearly fatal quad-bike accident in 2003, resulting in 15 screws being placed in his back. But then those postponed dates were pushed back by more health complications and the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, the remaining tour dates,...

There’s something a little unnerving about hearing Iain Stirling’s voice in the winter. For the past seven years, the stand-up comedian has soundtracked the nation’s summers on Love Island. Catch just a few words of his Scottish accent and you expect unrealistically attractive people in bikinis to be lurking nearby, lamenting the struggles of being “mugged off”. Stirling is aware of the association. too. “It’s a bit like I’m the Michael Bublé of summer,” he says, stirring a coffee. “I just disappear off the face of the earth to most people. I’m obviously touring, but no one really hears from me and then once a year I just arrive like [Bublé at Christmas], ‘Hi, do you remember me?’”
But it’s January, and Stirling’s not in hibernation. Instead, he’s heading into his busiest new year in a while. He’s currently spending every day recording...

It's been six years since Netflix shelled out 40 million to Chris Rock for the rights to stream two stand-up specials, but we've only seen one, 2018's scathingly self-reflective "Tamborine," thus far. Just when you were worried he might be receding from view (particularly in the aftermath of getting slapped across the face by Will Smith at the 2022 Academy Awards), Netflix has announced that the trailblazing comic is roaring back to become the first artist to perform live on the streaming platform.
According to a press release issued by the company today, Rock will wield his microphone on a special that will stream live in early 2023. According to Robbie Praw, Netflix's Vice President of Stand-Up and Comedy Formats, "Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation. We're thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history.

Joe Biden took a step towards marijuana decriminalization last week when he granted a mass pardon to anyone convicted of a federal crime for simple possession of the drug. He also asked governors to take similar steps, and directed his administration to review marijuana’s status as a Schedule I substance alongside hard drugs like heroin.

As Soon As a pair of silver vans arrive at the VIP entrance of Birmingham, England’s Alexander Stadium, the whispers start. “Is that Sharon Osbourne?” a squinting security guard asks her friend.
“I think so,” the other guard says. “Does that mean … ?”
The drivers keep security in the dark — literally — by turning off their dome lights as they wait for Prince Edward to finish a speech for the closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games, a multisport event similar to the Olympics that took place in early August. The vans creep toward the stage.

“I will get back on stage if it f***ing kills me,” bat sommelier of legend Ozzy Osbourne told The Independent recently. Aged 73, and recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Osbourne has rediscovered the determination of the devil. Patient No 9 is his second album in as many years and, like his 2020 comeback album Ordinary Man (released seven years after the Black Sabbath reunion album 13 and a decade on from his previous solo record), it’s a rejuvenated and starry proposition.
While Ordinary Man featured collaborations with Elton John, Post Malone, Tom Morello, Charlie Puth, Travis Scott and most of Guns N’ Roses, Patient No 9 is a roll-call of more hardcore heroes: alongside the returning Roses are Josh Homme, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and various members of Jane’s Addiction, Metallica, Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers. It’s quite a shame that Richard Linklater’s stellar memory piece Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood seemed to come and go last month with little fanfare, but a friendly reminder that it’s available to watch as long as Netflix is still around. Along with a new Criterion Channel retrospective, the Austin-based director is back in the spotlight as his next project has been unveiled.
Variety reports Linklater will direct the action comedy Hitman, reuniting with Everybody Wants Some!! and Apollo 10½ star Glen Powell, who will also co-write the script with the director. In the refreshing news, this is not another reboot of the videogame series, but rather telling the stranger-than-fiction, real-life tale of Houston’s Gary Johnson, a staff investigator at the Harris Country district attorney’s office who goes undercover as a hitman to catch people ordering said hit.
