- Began his career in the music business in the mid-1960s as half of folk duo Rupert & David, followed by stints with the bands Quantum Jump and Spin 1ne 2wo. As a solo artist he recorded six albums under his own name and three under the alias Thinkman.
- Wrote the forward to Billboard's The Encyclopedia Of Record Producers.
- Produced records for Jon Pertwee (the 3rd Dr Who), Camel, Murray Head, Kevin Ayers, Howard Jones, The Fixx, Thompson Twins, Bob Geldof, Saga, The Members, The Waterboys, Stevie Nicks, Chris de Burgh. Underworld, Tina Turner, Rush, Duncan Sheik, Katey Sagal, Milla Jovovich, Stroke 9, Amanda Ghost, Boy George, Suzanne Vega and others.
- Launched Auditorius, a joint venture with BMG Rights Management, in 2011.
- Received an APRS Fellowship Award in 2011.
- Founding member of Music Producers Guild, the International MIDI Association and was a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the US.
- Sat on the boards of committees for BASCA and the Ivors Academy.
