- Although Ian was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne he was brought in Darlington and educated at Hurworth House School in Darlington, Durham School and Durham University, after which he studied for the stage at the Central School of Speach and Drama from where he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1964 remaining with them for 5 years before making his film debut in King Lear in 1969.
