Months before she won the 2023 Best Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy for the first season of FX’s “The Bear,” it was reported that Ayo Edebiri would move up to lead for season two. According to our odds chart, she looks set to become the 12th woman to reap both supporting and lead Emmy bids (in that order) for a single role on a single series. If she takes the gold again, she will become the first to win both comedy actress awards in that order for one show.
Edebiri’s win in the supporting race at the strike-delayed 75th Emmys was preceded by victories in lead for season two at the 2024 Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards. Having just blocked Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”) from achieving back-to-back supporting Emmy honors, she now faces the challenge of fending off two former lead champions: Jean Smart and Quinta Brunson.

Rochelle Oliver, who starred on Broadway in Lillian Hellman’s Toys in the Attic and Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and taught acting at New York’s respected Hb Studio since the 1970s, has died. She was 86.
Oliver died April 13, the Hb Studio announced. “Those who knew Rochelle will know what a luminous artist, sensitive and passionate teacher she was,” it said in an Instagram post. She died two days shy of her birthday.
For the big screen, Oliver starred in the Horton Foote-written 1918 (1985) and Courtship (1987) and appeared in such other films as The Happy Hooker (1975), Paul Mazursky‘s Next Stop, Greenwich Village (1976), John Sayles’ Lianna (1983), An Unremarkable Life (1989), Martin Brest’s Scent of a Woman (1992) and Woody Allen’s Hollywood Ending (2002).
She also recurred as Judge Grace Larkin on Law & Order from 1993-03.

Since 1991 (and primarily within the last 10 years), a total of six TV performers have earned recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for reprising roles that had brought them Golden Globe nominations at least a decade earlier. With this and his own stellar HFPA track record in mind, Kelsey Grammer – the two-time Best TV Comedy Actor-winning star of “Frasier” – can more than reasonably be expected to join said prestigious club by scoring his ninth bid in the category (and first in 22 years) for the Paramount Plus revival of his beloved NBC sitcom. What’s more, he might actually make history as the first actor involved in such a situation to pull off a comeback victory.
Grammer collected his first eight Golden Globe nominations for “Frasier” between 1994 and 2002 and emerged triumphant in both 1996 and 2001. After saying goodbye to Dr. Frasier Crane 19 years ago, he is now set to lead a long-awaited...

After both making good on their recent efforts to become first-time lead acting Emmy contenders, formerly supporting “Succession” cast mates Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook are naturally expected to be similarly bumped up on the next Golden Globes ballot. If they do achieve their first Best TV Drama Actor and Best TV Drama Actress notices this winter, the on-screen siblings will join a group of 10 other Golden Globe nominees who succeeded in rebranding their initially supporting characters as lead ones. As it stands, said club has not welcomed a new member – regardless of genre or gender – in two full decades.
Culkin’s Golden Globes resume currently includes three fruitless featured bids for “Succession,” on which he was bested by Ben Whishaw, Stellan Skarsgård and O Yeong-su. Although Snook only has a 2022 supporting nomination for the HBO series to her name, she actually prevailed, even against awards magnet Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus...

Since the fourth season of HBO’s “Succession” focuses on finally providing an answer as to whether Logan Roy’s media empire can survive in the hands of his three youngest children, it’s only fitting for the actors who play said offspring to now be on the same tier when it comes to awards consideration. Soon after former supporting Emmy nominee Kieran Culkin joined his TV brother (Jeremy Strong) and dad (Brian Cox) in submitting as a lead this year, Sarah Snook, who portrays youngest Roy sibling Shiv, followed suit. This move means she will very likely be counted among nine other women who each procured supporting and lead Emmy bids (in that order) for a single role on a single series.
As a featured “Succession” performer, Snook earned her first two TV academy notices in 2020 and 2022. She lost on both outings to “Ozark” actress Julia Garner, who she...

It may not feel like it, but the ratings system used for movies that is administered by the Motion Picture Association of America is still an ongoing work in progress. Granted, the system has seemingly been fully established for the last 30-odd years or so, with the last major hiccup being the creation and controversial usage of the Nc-17 rating during the 1990s.
Still, it only takes a cursory glance at the recent cinematic landscape to see that there's a remarkable imbalance in the way the ratings system has been used over the past couple decades. Upon the introduction of a "middle ground" rating between PG and R, the PG-13, the system began to slowly be skewed to the point where now G and PG-rated films are almost exclusively the purview of children's movies (with the G rating itself nearly fully retired by circumstance). PG-13 has far and away become the most common rating,...

Gizmo is back and he’s as cute as ever in the upcoming animated prequel Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.
The series (which debuts on Max Tuesday, May 23 with its first two episodes) takes viewers back to 1920s Shanghai where the Wing family first meets the young Mogwai called Gizmo (voiced by Aj LoCascio). “Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the original Gremlins film; voiced by Izaac Wang) accepts the dangerous task of taking Gizmo home, embarking on a journey through the Chinese countryside,” reads the official description. “Sam and Gizmo are joined by a teenage street thief...

Alice left an indelible mark on American TV. Based on a relatively minor Martin Scorsese film, the weekly 30-minute sitcom followed the day-to-day of a widowed mom (played by Linda Lavin) who experienced car trouble in Arizona and never left. Nearly five decades after its 1976 debut, all but two of the original Alice cast members have died. Who’s still alive?

FX/Hulu’s Chicago-set restaurant dramedy The Bear has sizzled its way into the awards conversation as a frontrunner in a variety of fields, including for its lead performances from Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri. But The Bear isn’t the first series to center its narrative around food service: In 1976, Alice premiered on CBS, following its eponymous waitress as she begins a new job at a diner in Phoenix.
The series was based on the 1974 film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Robert Getchell, which won a lead actress Oscar for Ellen Burstyn. The old showbiz maxim goes, "Never work with children or animals," but what about mogwai? That was Zach Galligan's challenge on the set of Joe Dante's 1984 creature feature "Gremlins." Part black comedy and part family adventure, the Chris Columbus-penned story follows a young man who receives a mythic furry creature as a pet and, once that pet multiplies, the havoc that ensues. Against an 11 million production budget, "Gremlins" earned more than 150 million at the box office and became a game-changer of sorts; its violent sequences (including a mother's gremlin killing spree) prompted the MPAA to amend its rating system to include the PG-13 rating.
The film's human star, Zach Galligan, spent a fair amount of the 106-minute runtime acting opposite an assortment of Chris Walas-designed mechanical puppets. As young Billy Peltzer, Galligan interacts largely with the cutest of all gremlins, the googly-eyed furball Gizmo, teaching the...

Some young people look at various tweets, articles, and posts from cinephiles and film historians like myself advocating for proper film preservation and scoff, thinking that, in this brave new world of instant access streaming services and online downloads, the entire history of cinema is at our fingertips and so we shouldn't be complaining.
Of course, this attitude is not only grossly misinformed given modern cinema's unsustainable status quo, but potentially dangerous, at least when it comes to keeping the history of what is still the most preeminent artistic medium of our lifetime alive. If historians are particularly passionate about the issue, it's in part because we're aware of similar threats that menaced film preservation in the past.
One of those threats emerged in the mid-'80s, when media mogul Ted Turner made the rather glib decision to "colorize" classic black-and-white films for television broadcast. The pushback from filmmakers, critics,...

An actress receiving two Primetime Emmy nominations in a single year may seem like a rare occurrence, but it is actually fairly common. In fact, there have been 65 instances since 1967, including two last year involving Aidy Bryant and Jean Smart. What is uncommon is a woman earning double recognition within the same genre, with Bryant being one of only a dozen to ever be so honored (discounting guest categories). Now, Toni Collette has a shot at becoming the lucky 13th.
For her work on the two limited series “The Staircase” and “Pieces of Her,” Collette could be nominated this year as both a featured player and a lead. On the former show, she plays Kathleen Peterson, the subject of a real early 2000s murder case that ended in the conviction of her husband, Michael. In the early 1970s, Valerie Harper set a precedent among TV supporting actresses by winning three consecutive Emmys as Rhoda Morgenstern on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Her character’s popularity led to the spinoff series “Rhoda” in 1974, and she ended up taking home a lead acting prize for the show’s inaugural season. This made her the first performer to earn nominations as one character across multiple categories for multiple programs. In the nearly five decades since, 11 more actors have joined the group, including three more double winners.
Harper was first followed by two of her “Mary Tyler Moore Show” castmates: Cloris Leachman (1976) and Ed Asner (1978). Their respective characters, Phyllis Lindstrom and Lou Grant, were promoted to lead placement on spinoffs of their own, which were appropriately titled “Phyllis” and “Lou Grant.” Leachman won as a supporting actress (1974) and a guest performer (1975) for the original series but never for her own show.

The Best TV Supporting Actress Golden Globe has felt like it’s Meryl Streep‘s to lose even before anyone saw a second of her on “Big Little Lies.” If she does extend her win record to nine, “Big Little Lies” would also become the fourth show to win have more than one victory in the category.
Best TV Supporting Actress was added at the 28th Golden Globes in February 1971, and since then only “Alice,” “One Day at a Time” and “Downton Abbey” have managed to pull off multiple wins. The low number makes sense since the category combines all genres of TV, and a high number of stars from one-off programs like TV movies and miniseries have won over the years. Never mind the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association likes to move on to new things, putting regular series at a greater disadvantage.

The exclusive 4K Ultra-hd club welcomes a worthy new member, Joe Dante’s evergreen horror comedy (and Christmas delight) about a cute furry critter and its 2nd-generation horde of scaly, impish demons. These aren’t Gremlins from the Kremlin, but homegrown domestic terrorist monsters, and Dante contrasts their killer antics with a sentimental parody of small town America. No CGI … You will believe that the animatronic rascals can multiply like rabbits, break dance, and run amuck!

It’s getting more and more important to remember the actors that came before those we know and appreciate today since quite honestly without those actors it’s likely that the inspiration for the people we know about today wouldn’t have been the same. Polly Holliday is one such individual that helped to blaze the trail in her time since she’s been a rather prominent actress on the scene up until her retirement from show business just short of a decade ago. If you remember Florence Jean “Flo” Castleberry then you recall when she was truly great and had a lot to

It's been 30 years, but we all still remember the three rules: Don't expose them to bright light, don't get them wet, and never feed them after midnight.
"Gremlins," which opened on June 8, 1984, has been a pop culture mainstay ever since, playing often on TV, launching a number of careers, influencing countless other tongue-in-cheek horror movies, and even changing the way movies are rated.
Still, as familiar as you are with adorable Gizmo and demonic Stripe, there may be many things you don't know about "Gremlins" -- like the famous voices behind the gremlins, the in-jokes, and the film's role in the creation of the PG-13 rating. Read on for more secrets of the mogwai.
1. "Gremlins" marked the screenwriting debut of Chris Columbus, who would later go on to direct "Home Alone," "Mrs. Doubtfire," and the first two Harry Potter movies. He wrote the script as a calling card just to get noticed in Hollywood,...

Last month, as the fate of ABC's Gcb hung in the balance, we were worried it would become a member of the "Gone Too Soon" club, TV shows that were snuffed out before they had a chance to flourish, or at least before we had a chance to grow tired of them.
Sadly, Gcb has gone to that big Upn in the sky, where it can run happily in the meadow with the likes of Firefly, Pushing Daisies, and Manimal.
While we mourn Gcb's loss, let's take a look at more shows that were ended too quickly. They were unappreciated at the the time, but they were either too good or too ... interesting ... not to have been offered the opportunity to flourish. Or flame out. Which is just as good.

If there was one great gift the 80s gave us, it was the gift of the B-flick, horror movie. Malicious villains like Freddy Krueger and Jason were born in Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. Both of these films kept children awake at night with nightmares of gruesome deaths. Parents regretted not heeding the “R” rating that drove those children into their beds. I still remember my dad waking up with bruises left from me kicking him in the back. Shame on him for allowing this five-year old kid to watch Freddy eviscerate everyone on Elm Street. The Gremlins was one movie that received acclaim during this era of low-budget horror. The story revolved around a young boy who received a pet Mogwai, named Gizmo, as a gift. However, much like the Amazing Spider-Man, with great Mogwai comes great responsibility. When two rules are broken, all hell breaks...

Welcome back to the second entry of Dread Central's Six Slays of Christmas feature! We're now just five little days away from the year's biggest holiday season, and to celebrate the coming of Saint Nick (or whomever you believe in), we'll be taking a look at a different yuletide horror flick each day until the 25th! Think of it as a cinema crazed Advent calendar!
I know Christmas is right around the corner and many of you are out there doing some last-minute shopping. Let me give you one piece of advice. Whatever you do, do not buy some weird looking animal you've never seen before from a guy in Chinatown with the worst cataract you've ever seen. If you need a gift, just buy a copy of Arkham City or something skimpy from Victoria's Secret (unless it's for your mother, then neither of those gifts seems very appropriate unless...
