After his father’s unexpected death, acclaimed New York-based pianist Adam Tendler used his inheritance – a wad of cash received in a parking lot – to begin a commissioning project, inviting some of today’s most influential composers and sound artists to create new piano works exploring the idea of inheritance itself. Woven into an intimate program, these pieces tell a universal story of lineage, loss, and place, and result in a meditation on confronting our past while moving toward the future.

In the wake of the terrible attacks in Paris, I found myself listening to a lot of French music and thinking about the Leonard Bernstein quote going around on Facebook: "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." This list came to seem like my natural response. A very small response, I know. This list is chronological and leaves off people I should probably include. The forty [note: now forty-one] composers listed below are merely a start.
Léonin Aka Leoninus (c.1135-c.1201)
The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris in the 1100s was a major musical center, and Léonin (the first named composer from whom we have notated polyphonic music) was a crucial figure for defining the liturgical use of organum, the first polyphony. Earlier organum was fairly simple, involving parallel intervals and later contrary motion, but the mid-12th century brought...

The subtitle is a bit off in one instance, in two senses: as Lin freely admits in the fine interview that makes up the friendly yet informative booklet notes, David...

ABC Family has decided to order a sitcom called Melissa & Joey starring Melissa Joan Hart of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Joey Lawrence of Blossom. The concept is Melissa as a politician and Joey as her manny. No word on whether there will be a slutty red headed grandmother.
The Directors Guild of America gave out their awards over the weekend, and Lee Daniels did not become the first African-American to win. But Kathryn Bigelow did become the first woman to win the big award for The Hurt Locker. Jason Winer also picked up the award for Comedy Series for directing the pilot of Modern Family. *Note: We’ll cover the Grammys in a separate post.
If Jersey Shore happens at a shore other than Jersey’s, is it still Jersey Shore? MTV decided to take the spare change under the tanning bed and pay the cast’s demands.
