“We can confirm that Sergio passed away this morning,” his rep shared. “He was in the hospital previously with a bout of pneumonia, not sure that was the cause. He was surrounded by family at the time.”

Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is a movie directed by Kasi Lemmons starring Naomi Ackie.
Today we saw this biopic about the always great Whitney Houston… according to some, the singer deserved something better than this; and for others… a good chance to remember her always.
A tribute to the singer born in Newark.
About the Movie Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody
Another biopic? Unfortunately, yes. This genre calls for more respect for the biography than a more developed introspection of the characters and frequently settles for composing works that revolve around more or less famous fragments and lose out (almost always) in the general balance, forcing respecto ver creation.
Many are born as failures.
With all our respects (totally) for the singer, we are of the opinion that this is a movie that although it is faithful to the biography, does not manage to transmit...

No one will accuse Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody of glossing over the turbulent life of Whitney Houston. In its two-plus hours, the movie, which was authorized by Houston’s family and was co-produced by her music mentor Clive Davis, features a multi-layered performance by British actress Naomi Ackie, whose lip-synching to Houston’s vocals is incredibly convincing. The movie doesn’t skimp on scenes of Houston in the possession of drugs, kissing and frolicking with her close companion (and future creative director) Robyn Crawford, going into rehab,...

The holidays started early in Tinseltown (and elsewhere), beginning with James Cameron missing his own “Avatar: The Way of Water” Hollywood premiere, knocked down with a bout of Covid and moving on to New York’s first look at “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Santa turned up at Christina Moore and John Ducey’s “I Believe in Santa” Netflix premiere and there was even a Christmas Con! Meanwhile, Damien Chazelle brought a much less family-friendly flick, “Babylon,” to the City of Angels in another splashy premiere.

Kasi Lemmons had quite a few reservations prior to boarding the biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody. For starters, she’d run in similar circles to the iconic musician in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, back when Lemmons was acting in films like School Daze and The Silence of the Lambs. After transitioning to filmmaking with her remarkable debut Eve’s Bayou, she met with Whitney to pitch a screenplay she’d written for her about the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, a trailblazing all-women swing and jazz group in the ‘30s and ‘40s,...

Directed by Kasi Lemmons, written by Anthony McCarten, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody is the new biopic on the singer’s life. Her history is full of dense material and naturally some things have to be left out for the sake of time, but 2.5 hours isn’t enough to do the story justice. The movie stars Naomi Ackie, Stanley Tucci, Nafessa Williams, and Ashton Sanders.
The film starts with Whitney (Naomi Ackie) singing in the church choir run by her mother Cissy (Tamara Tunie), who also has a small band she performs with where Whitney sings back up. While chilling in the park listening to music the young singer meets Robyn (Nafessa Williams), a young girl from her neighborhood who she befriends. A friend of the family brings Arista Records CEO Clive Davis (Stanley Tucci) to a show where Cissy is supposed to lead, but she pushes...

Engineered to satisfy the nostalgia of adoring fans, the Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” unfurls as an inventory of touchstone moments in the gifted singer’s tumultuous career — a greatest hits album if you will.
With Naomi Ackie (“Small Axe”) in the central role and veteran director Kasi Lemmons (“Eve’s Bayou”) at the helm, the generally by-the-numbers execution and structure still yields some goosebumps-inducing highlights that evoke Houston’s stage presence.
The screenplay by Anthony McCarten, a sought-after biopic writer whose recent credits include the utterly conventional but awards-friendly “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Darkest Hour,” drops us into the timeline in 1983 when Houston shared her privileged pipes with her congregation and at a local New Jersey club with her mother, Cissy (Tamara Tunie).
Unexpectedly — considering how McCarten’s film on the Queen vocalist sanitized his sexuality — Houston’s romantic attraction for women is established from the early scenes,...

As shocking as it sounds to modern audiences, Marilyn Monroe's star qualities weren't immediately recognized by Hollywood. After gaining some attention in the modeling world, Monroe attempted to break into the world of acting, but struggled in those early years. Although Twentieth Century Fox signed the aspiring actress in 1946, the studio dropped her shortly afterwards when her star failed to rise. Monroe fell back on modeling, and reluctantly posed nude to avoid financial ruin, despite believing that "nice girls [don't] not pose in the nude." Ironically, the photos earned her a second chance at Hollywood stardom.
Prior to 1950, Monroe was only capable of landing bit roles until she caught the eye of famed director John Houston. Some claim Monroe's audition blew Houston away and that he gave her the part immediately, while others believe the director made a backroom deal to avoid financial trouble. Regardless, Monroe got the part and wowed audiences as Angela Phinlay.

It's still hard to imagine how musical biopics can exist in a post "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" world, but the last few years have been bursting with big-budget biopics centered on some of the most iconic performers in music history. Jennifer Hudson belted her face off as Aretha Franklin in "Respect," Taron Egerton was downright dazzling as Elton John in "Rocketman," Austin Butler may be looking at an Oscar nomination for his turn in "Elvis," following a trend set by Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody." Now, the queen of R&b is getting a high-profile film of her own, with Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston.
The upcoming film "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" comes from "Bohemian Rhapsody" screenwriter Anthony McCarten and groundbreaking director Kasi Lemmons, with Ackie lip-syncing to Houston's unbelievable voice while embodying the remarkably talented woman the world lost too soon. The...

September 11 marked a very different occasion in Chile. It was 40 years ago that a CIA backed military operation ousted a democratically elected president and launched 17 years of fear and violence on the nation. Chilean artists only survived if they went in to exile and film schools were closed. Expression wasn't encouraged so it's incredible that today these Chilenos and Chilenas have a voice and have made such an impact on the international film landscape.
They came through the dictatorship and have an admiration and camaraderie with one another that inspires each other with an unbreakable bond. Today is Chilean Independence day and we wanted to ask these filmmakers who has inspired them. As a Chileno, I dedicate this to my mother.

Toronto-based Fatal Pictures is a independent production company founded by producer Zach Green and writer/director Richard Powell. Whitney Houston paid off a woman who blackmailed her about her love life. . The late 'I Will Always Love You' singer - who died aged 48 as a result of accidental drowning and the 'effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use' in February 2012 - was the subject of an alleged extortion plot at the height of her fame when the unnamed blackmailer threatened to reveal 'intimate details' about her personal life unless she was paid $100,000, according to files released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The 128 page record, made public after a freedom of information request, reveals that Whitney and her father John Houston received a letter from a Chicago-based lawyer in November 1992...

Whitney Houston believed she was being extorted for hundreds of thousands of dollars in the early '90s, according to FBI documents released in accordance with a Freedom of Information Act request. The records -- all redacted -- indicate that Houston and her father, John Houston, were contacted in November of 1992 by a Chicago-based lawyer representing the unidentified person with "knowledge of intimate details regarding" the now-deceased singer's "romantic relationship." Unless "an extortion demand" of $250,000 was paid, the individual threatened to go public with the information. Also read: Whitney Houston's 'Sparkle' Clip...

The FBI is saving all its files for Whitney Houston fans. Responding to numerous Freedom of Information Act requests, the agency has released the 128-page record it had on the late music legend. And most interestingly, the documents reveal that the FBI had investigated a purported extortion attempt against Houston that ultimately led to no charges after the diva's camp apparently coughed up some dough. In a Dec. 3, 1992, memorandum marked "extortion" that was sent to Houston's New Jersey-based management company, Nippy Incorporated, a federal agent indicated that an attorney for an unidentified woman sent a letter the previous month to Houston and her father, John Houston, claiming his...

Whitney Houston's FBI files have been released as a result of the Freedom of Information Act. The information revealed shows that Houston was the target of extortion a number of times.
Of the threatening letters Houston received during her career, one in 1992 was marked "extortion" by the FBI because it demanded that the singer pay $100,000 to prevent "details" of her "private life" from being released. A later letter from the same person demanded $250,000 instead.
Houston reportedly considered the woman who sent the letters a "friend" and had discussed "personal things" with her. Houston's father, John Houston, sent the woman a confidentiality agreement with an undisclosed amount of money that seemingly was meant to quiet her. The FBI closed that extortion case not long after.
In another instance, an unnamed fan sent Houston more than 79 letters and even threatened to "hurt someone" if he could not meet her. He claimed...

What I found in a Ray Bradbury books was a sense of wonder, where science fiction and dark fantasy intersected with the realm of literature. He was one of the few authors of the Golden Age of Science Fiction –the 1940s and 50s- who transcended the genre and was able to make it accessible to all readers, not those who just loved science fiction. As the Los Angeles Times noted, Bradbury had the ability to “to write lyrically and evocatively of lands an imagination away, worlds he anchored in the here and now with a sense of visual clarity and small-town familiarity.”
Bradbury passed away here in Los Angles yesterday at the age of 91. Born in Waukegan , a the northern suburb of Chicago that hugged Lake Michigan, his family eventually settled in Los Angeles in 1934, but the mystery of small town life never left him, as a lot of his...

Newark, N.J. (AP) -- After all the testimonials from relatives and friends, the songs from legends and pop stars, the preaching and even laughter, the raw emotion of Whitney Houston's funeral came down to just one moment: The sound of her own voice. As the strains of her biggest record, "I Will Always Love You," filled the New Hope Baptist Church at the end of the nearly four-hour service Saturday and her silver-and-gold casket was lifted in the air, the weight of the moment was too much for her mother to bear.Gospel singer Cissy Houston wailed, "My baby! My baby!" as she was held up by two women and led out of the church behind her daughter's body.A few steps behind her was the pop icon's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, also crying uncontrollably as she was comforted by Houston's close friend, singer Ray J.It was the...

With the new Blu-ray release of the entire Star Wars saga, we've come to learn that once again George Lucas has altered his work on Star Wars. He's been altering Star Wars for as long as I can remember, but believe it or not there was a time when Lucas actually spoke out against films being altered.
Back in the 1980's people were trying to colorize classic black and white films. The issue actually made its way to congress where Lucas got up in front of congress and gave a passionate speech about how the people altering these films were... barbarians. Yes, there was a time when Lucas actually gave a shit like the rest of us, but now he's turned into the barbarian he spoke against all those many years ago.

In the 1980s, a controversy swirled in Hollywood when there was a notion to colorize black and white films. The issue made it all the way in front of Congress due in large part to the passionate backing of several important filmmakers. Eventually, their efforts helped to establish the National Film Registry which, to this day, takes historically significant films and preserves them in their natural state forever. On March 3, 1988, George Lucas was one of those filmmakers who spoke in front of Congress. The same George Lucas who, in the two decades since, has continually tinkered with his signature Star Wars films from the Special Editions through the prequels and right up to the Blu-rays, which caused massive mainstream controversy this week due to new changes including a digital Yoda [1] and Darth Vader's new dialogue [2]. But on that day, 23 years ago, Lucas delivered a rousing speech that condemned exactly what he'd end up doing himself.

Make no mistake about Fubar: Balls to the Wall, it is hilarious. It is downright funny in a way that Jackass 3 was funny with the exception that the talent of David Lawrence and Paul Spence, who play Terry and Dean, respectively, are comedic actors who are so in tune to these characters that they feel like second skin that’s easily gotten into. The rules for a heist film are rather simple. You need a crew. A successful heist film cannot be a one-man job, although you should be prepared for the possibility that one of them is going to turn on the others, because traitors are everywhere. You need an objective, be it money, jewels, a technological gizmo, the secret plans, or gold. It helps if you have a dramatic escape plan. You don't necessarily need to use violence, though having a tough guy never hurt. Oh, and frequently it's going to be someone's last big job. Yeah, that usually works out well.
(Side note: if anyone ever comes up to me with a foolproof plan to rob a bank... I'd consider it. If they ever tell me this is gonna be their last big score, I'm getting the fuck away from them. Don't call me, don't visit, nothing. Lose my number.

Christmas dinner is gonna be so awkward! Whitney Houston is being sued by her own stepmother. According to the lawsuit, Barbara Houston claims the singer pocketed a $1-million life insurance payout from her late father's estate, E! Online reports.
