“We lost a legend last night. It’s hard to put into words how brilliant my uncle Michael was, and how influential he was to me,” Sam posted. “His stories always inspired me and made me fall in love with acting. He was the coolest, most confident, talented guy, and the fact that he was my blood will always make me feel special.”

There’s a scene in Clueless that finds Alicia Silverstone’s Cher fielding a surprise phone call from her father, Mel Horowitz, played by the late and great Dan Hedaya, who wants her home immediately. “I expect you to walk in this door in 20 minutes,” he demands, a tall order considering Cher is a party in the Valley and far from home in the 90210. “Everywhere in L.A. takes 20 minutes.”
That line manages to sneak its way into many L.A. conversations, and it was perhaps never more true than during the crush of the early pandemic when streets were fairly empty and freeways more so. Those days are done and the city is more congested than ever, especially on an Oscar weekend like the one we just had with a dizzying number of parties. Things are so back to normal that people everywhere were saying it felt like “the before times,...

Every breakout independent hit seems like a miracle. This delightful ‘little’ picture was fated to be ghetto-ized into ethnic theaters before its producers opted to distribute it themselves. Capturing a vibrant part of the immigrant experience, Joan Micklin Silver’s micro-production often has a big-picture look; it charmed audiences and became a sleeper success. Star Carol Kane was nominated for an acting Oscar as ‘Gitl,’ a woman with Old-Country values plus the grit and determination to win a better life. Also with fine performances from Steven Keats, Mel Howard, Dorrie Kavanaugh and Doris Roberts.

Iggy Azalea paid tribute to cult teen classic Clueless in her recent music video for 'Fancy'.
The Australian rapper appears as Alicia Silverstone's iconic character Cher in the video, which was released online last week.
As stars continue to be inspired by the movie almost 20 years on, we take a fond look back at the cast and what they went on to do after Clueless:
Alicia Silverstone (Cher Horowitz)
Alicia Silverstone played seemingly shallow socialite Cher - famously branded "a virgin who can't drive" and "hymenally challenged" - in the high-school adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma.
Prior to Clueless, Silverstone's credits included ABC comedy-drama The Wonder Years and a number of Aerosmith videos. The film propelled her to further fame, and she went on to star in Joel Schumacher's 1997 movie Batman & Robin, crime-comedy Excess Baggage (1997) with Benicio Del Toro and Christopher Walken, and romantic drama Blast from the Past (1999) opposite Brendan Fraser.

A simple, unforgettable film about the terminal illness and passing away of producer-actor Mel Howard (best-known as a performer for his supporting role in "Hester Street") made by his wife, Michelle Le Brun, "Death: A Love Story" premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and was named best documentary at the Santa Barbara (Calif.) Film Festival.
Running slightly longer than an hour and compiled from video recordings Howard and Le Brun shot with no particular plans to make a film, "Death" is unique in its matter-of-fact, civilized approach to a couple facing the unthinkable. It's also an eye-opening, sobering encounter with modern medicine and remarkable evidence of filmmaking playing a part in the healing process in the aftermath of tragedy.
Screening tonight at the Egyptian Theatre as part of the American Cinematheque's Alternative Screen series and opening Friday for its Academy Award-qualifying run at Laemmle's Grande 4-Plex in Los Angeles, "Death" also explores spiritual areas and is not nearly as depressing as it sounds.
Howard, whose accomplishments included serving as co-founding associate director of the American Film Institute and head of European production for Sam Spiegel during the 1960s, was diagnosed with primary liver cancer in November 1995.
The film follows his and much-younger Le Brun's pursuit of alternative treatments, and then finally chemotherapy and a transplant. When the end becomes inevitable, Le Brun bravely keeps the camera rolling for the incredibly sad event that Howard meets with dignity, acceptance and curiosity.
